Witnesses said the students were acting intoxicated. Catawba County Sheriff Coy Reid said when deputies asked if the boys had been drinking, one player did admit outright to using alcohol. He added three other players were given and failed Breathalyzer tests. Reid said deputies found alcohol in the two other players' cars, which were parked on school grounds.
None of the students were arrested, however, the two boys accused of having alcohol in their cars were issued citations.
Parents of other players on the team told NewsChannel 36 all six players were suspended from school and kicked off the team.
The Catawba County School District would not comment on the punishments since it is not allowed to discuss student disciplinary matters.
Catawba County School Superintendent Dan Brigman said in an email to NewsChannel 36, ?Our school administration has followed up this morning with a thorough investigation into the matter. As a result of their investigation, the appropriate disciplinary actions have been taken in accordance with local Board of Education Policies and Procedures.?
Sources told NewsChannel 36 those players were not on the team bus that left Friday afternoon for the game at Fred T. Foard High School.
