Exercise in the Community and Pay As You Go | Counselling ...

Certain times of the year often trigger the desire to exercise, get fit and maybe lose a few pounds. Typically Christmas and New Year motivate people to exercise and enrol in classes and there can be a certain camaraderie in joining others in the shared goal of toning one?s body and improving one?s fitness levels.

Often though, throughout the year more personal motivators to exercise can arise. An anticipated holiday, change of personal circumstances, special birthday can propel a person to decide to get fit or undertake a makeover.

Not everyone wants to pay or commit time to joining a gym. For some people a gym can appear intimidating; just the thought of walking into a room full of toned bodies and matching kit can be enough to make a potential member turn and run back to their sofa. Also not everyone knows or can guarantee their regular availability. Gym membership can be expensive in those circumstances.

Exercise in the community is a good way to get fit in comfortable, familiar surroundings. Classes are often held in the local Church or School Hall, which means that customers exercise alongside their neighbours, other parents from their children?s schools, people they shop alongside. People on their own can feel comfortable attending, knowing that they are likely to see familiar faces and be accepted without feeling awkward.

Many communities offer classes that appeal to different age groups and fitness levels as well as being available at different times throughout the day or evening. So there may be yoga and Pilates through to dance classes, Zumba, aerobics, martial arts and body conditioning. Sometimes outdoor classes are available, like circuit training and team sports. It?s worth looking into to find something that sounds interesting.

As a consequence, friendships and relationships are enhanced. People get to know each other, develop a better community spirit, learn more about each other and, over time, become more invested in attending their classes. It?s also a good way to support local self-employed fitness trainers, often people who are highly competent and looking to build their businesses, their profiles and bring exercise to the people in a palatable and friendly way.

By adopting a pay as you go policy there is no up front financial commitment, which allows people to attend as and when suits them. Customers can exercise when they are available, discover if they like what?s on offer and pace the expense. Everyone benefits.
