Childhood Obesity In Decline In Some Cities | Your Health Journal

From Your Health Journal?..?Love this NY Times article that states childhood obesity rates are declining in some major cities. It may be debated by some experts, but even so, nice to read. Nationally, about 17 percent of children under 20 are obese, or about 12.5 million people, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, which defines childhood obesity as a body mass index at or above the 95th percentile for children of the same age and sex. So, there is still work to be done. Educating families on healthy lifestyle along with government support can create some major positive ?health? changes in the lives of children.?

From the article?..

After decades of rising childhood obesity rates, several American cities are reporting their first declines.

The trend has emerged in big cities like New York and Los Angeles, as well as smaller places like Anchorage, Alaska, and Kearney, Neb. The state of Mississippi has also registered a drop, but only among white students.

?It?s been nothing but bad news for 30 years, so the fact that we have any good news is a big story,? said Dr. Thomas Farley, the health commissioner in New York City, which reported a 5.5 percent decline in the number of obese schoolchildren from 2007 to 2011.

The drops are small, just 5 percent here in Philadelphia and 3 percent in Los Angeles. But experts say they are significant because they offer the first indication that the obesity epidemic, one of the nation?s most intractable health problems, may actually be reversing course.

The first dips ? noted in a September report by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation ? were so surprising that some researchers did not believe them.

Deanna M. Hoelscher, a researcher at the University of Texas, who in 2010 recorded one of the earliest declines ? among mostly poor Hispanic fourth graders in the El Paso area ? did a double-take. ?We reran the numbers a couple of times,? she said. ?I kept saying, ?Will you please check that again for me?? ?

Researchers say they are not sure what is behind the declines. They may be an early sign of a national shift that is visible only in cities that routinely measure the height and weight of schoolchildren. The decline in Los Angeles, for instance, was for fifth, seventh and ninth graders ? the grades that are measured each year ? between 2005 and 2010. Nor is it clear whether the drops have more to do with fewer obese children entering school or currently enrolled children losing weight. But researchers note that declines occurred in cities that have had obesity reduction policies in place for a number of years.

Though obesity is now part of the national conversation, with aggressive advertising campaigns in major cities and a push by Michelle Obama, many scientists doubt that anti-obesity programs actually work. Individual efforts like one-time exercise programs have rarely produced results. Researchers say that it will take a broad set of policies applied systematically to effectively reverse the trend, a conclusion underscored by an Institute of Medicine report released in May.

Hello from AlaskanFyrDragon - ADK= Gaming Community

Some of you know me, some don't. For those that don't (and also for those that DO...) I can come off as a real douche in-game some times.??Mostly this is because, as an un-clanned player, I have no responsibilities. what I do or say reflects upon no one other than myself; and I mostly don't give a flying f-all what people think of me.??In truth, I like to think I am a fairly sane and level headed person.??I'm 37, married for nearly 13 years, and have 2 boys; 21 and 14 (I know the math doesn't add up very nicely, but things are complicated).

Being in a clan makes a huge difference in how I behave, as I am no longer representing myself, but am an ambassador and spokesperson for a large group of other players who do not necessarily need me throwing crap their way.??some may, but most don't ; )

I know this may make me seen two-faced, or hypocritical, but its really the way all members of communities or societies behave.??Any person will behave differently when his actions can effect others, and not just himself.

So, I ask those that may already think I'm a douche to consider this the next time you see me in-game.

Thank you all, and I hope to be sending a BA Bolt your way very soon ; )

Season ends with NCAA Tournament loss to Oregon

Season ends with NCAA Tournament loss to Oregon

By BYU Sports Information

December 8th, 2012 @ 2:24pm

OMAHA, Neb. - A magical season for BYU women's volleyball came to an end on Friday as the No. 12 seed Cougars fell 3-1 (23-25, 21-25, 25-22, 12-25) to No. 5 seed Oregon in the Round of 16 at the 2012 NCAA Tournament.

BYU finishes the season at 28-4 overall, the most victories for a Cougar team since 1999. This season also marked BYU's first conference title since 2005 and first trip to the NCAA Tournament since 2007. The 2012 squad includes the West Coast Conference Coach of the Year (Shawn Olmstead), Player of the Year (Jennifer Hamson), Freshman of the Year (Alexa Gray) and Defensive Player of the Year (Nicole Warner).

"When I got this job, I told the girls, 'Buckle up. Hold on. We're going to turn this thing around.' Like I've said a thousand times, I felt we were one loss away from being in the tournament last year," Olmstead said. "This year we made it, and being able to win some matches is a positive that these girls have to cling to moving forward. There are a lot of positives."

Hamson led the way for the Cougars Friday night with 18 kills on .364 hitting while Gray added eight, and Warner and Kathryn LeCheminant tallied seven apiece. Ciara Parker led BYU with 15 digs while Heather Hannemann (12), Jessica Jardine (10) and Tia Withers (10) were also in double figures. Hannemann dished out 42 assists and the Cougars hit .259 as a team. Warner had a hand in seven of BYU's nine blocks as she registered one solo block and six block assists.

"Hats off to Oregon, definitely," Olmstead said. "They did an outstanding job this season. I felt they did a great job tonight. They got us definitely out of system, out of our style of play. That's a credit to them, their coaching staff and their athletes for executing the game plan really nicely. I felt those moments where they got us out of whack really got us in the end."

Despite hitting .500 and getting six kills from Hamson, BYU fell 25-23 to Oregon in the first set. The Cougars led for much of the set and by as many as three at 18-15 following a block by Warner and Hannemann. With BYU leading 21-19, Oregon tallied back-to-back kills to tie the score at 21-all. After Hamson gave the Cougars the lead at 22-21, Alaina Bergsma sandwiched a Katherine Fischer ace with two kills to set up Oregon's first set point at 24-22. Kimberly Dahl extended the set one more point with a kill but Liz Brenner tallied a kill to claim the set for the Ducks at 25-23.

Set two was all Oregon early as the Ducks built a 6-3 lead with two blocks, two kills and two aces. After two more Bergsma kills gave Oregon a 10-7 lead, BYU responded with a 9-2 run to take a four-point lead at 16-12. Warner started the rally with a kill and then teamed up with Hamson for a block to close the gap to one at 10-9. Hamson had two more kills and Warner and LeCheminant added kills of their own to polish off the run. Following an Oregon timeout the Ducks went on an 8-1 run to take the lead and seize control. Gray added two more kills but it was not enough as Oregon ended the set on a Bergsma kill for the 25-21 victory.

Hamson and the Cougars stayed alive with a hard-fought win in set three, 25-22. BYU gained some separation at 12-9 with a 3-0 run that included a Gray-Warner block and a Hamson kill. The Cougars looked to win the set going away as they opened a 19-12 lead on a 7-1 run that included kills from four different players and an ace by Withers. Oregon would not go quietly, however, answering BYU with an 8-2 run to get within one at 21-20. Gray settled the Cougars down with a kill and then Hamson had kills on BYU's last three points to give them the win in set three.

Oregon controlled the fourth set from the start, jumping out to a 9-2 lead. Back-to-back kills by LeCheminant pulled BYU within five at 11-6 but the Ducks proved too strong, closing the set with an 8-1 run to win 25-12 and take the match.

Affordable Elder Care You Can Trust

Care for aging family members doesn?t have to be expensive to be reliable. There are several affordable options available to families. From in-home care to long term care facilities, there is an option that meets your loved ones needs perfectly.

What to Consider

Trustworthy and reliable care is definitely more important to consider than cost. Luckily, you can have both. For most families, insurance will cover part or all of the costs associated with the care of elderly family members. You should contact your insurance company to determine what type of care is covered and whether you will have a co-pay.

You should also consider the personal needs of your loved one. For example, seniors with limited mobility may simply need assistance with cooking and light housekeeping, while elderly patients with dementia may bed twenty-four hour care. If you are unsure of the type of care needed, consulting your family doctor or a geriatric counselor can be helpful.

Set a Budget

When cost is important to consider, working with an expert in elder care options can help you make the right choices concerning the care of your loved ones. You should always be aware of the comprehensive costs of care, however. Look over an itemized cost sheet before agreeing to any care plan. It may be less expensive to cut corners or opt out of optional services, the things included in a slightly more costly plan may make a big difference in the comfort of your loved one.

You may also need a comprehensive cost sheet to determine the total cost of care in long term care facilities. For example, are meals included in the cost of living in the facility, or are they added in separately? In general, the cost of clothing and other personal items will be paid out of pocket.

Look for Alternatives

It is wise to compare the costs of different types of care before committing to a plan. It is less costly to hire an aide while you are unavailable, for instance, than it is to hire a live-in nurse. Additionally, you have the advantage of being able to interact with caregivers on a regular basis, ensuring your aging family member is getting the best care possible.

Reaching out to experts in your local community is a simple, affordable way to find resources that you can use to provide care. Senior centers are one way to ensure the elderly are provided with care during the work week. Senior centers provide meals, snacks, activities, and often transportation to and from the center each day. The facilities are usually free or low cost and employ professionals with experience in caring for the elderly.

Finding Reliable Care

When choosing a long term care facility or hiring an in-home caregiver it is important to spend some time researching your options. Interview candidates, take tours of various facilities, and ask for references. Reliable caregivers will have plenty of references and should have experience caring for seniors. In- home caregivers should also have some similarties, such as shared hobbies, with your family member.

AP Source: Arizona fines Dockett '6 figures'

(AP) ? Arizona defensive tackle Darnell Dockett has received a "six-figure" fine from the Cardinals for his behavior in the waning seconds in a 7-6 loss to the New York Jets on Sunday, a person with knowledge of the situation confirmed Friday.

The person spoke on condition of anonymity because the punishment had not been made public. The exact size of the fine was not known and it was uncertain whether the punishment would impact Dockett's participation Sunday in Seattle.

Dockett refused to go along with a coach's directive to allow the Jets to score late in the game so the Cardinals could get the ball back and go for the tying touchdown.

He indicated in a tweet Friday night that he was appealing through the players' union.

"Thank God for the (at)nflpa," Dockett wrote, "that's all I got to say... I ain't got no worries."

The fine first was reported by XTRA-AM 910 sports talk show host and Cardinals reporter Mike Jurecki.

The punishment stems from a directive from the coaching staff to allow the Jets to score when they had the ball deep in Arizona territory in the final minutes. Dockett refused and got into a heated on-field argument with safety Kerry Rhodes about it.

The issue became moot when the Jets' Shonn Greene purposely downed the ball at the Arizona 1 and ran out the clock.

Defensive coordinator Ray Horton told reporters Friday that he was the one who suggested to coach Ken Whisenhunt that the Jets be allowed to score. Whisenhunt has declined to discuss the situation, calling it an internal matter.

The emotional confrontation between Dockett and Rhodes came as the team headed toward its eighth consecutive loss. The prospects that the team would score in the final seconds with no timeouts were obviously dim, because it was one of the Cardinals' worst offensive performances in franchise history. With Ryan Lindley making his second start, the Cardinals tied a franchise low with five first downs and were 0 for 15 on third-down conversions.

Whisenhunt refused to replace Lindley with John Skelton, who was benched three games earlier. But Skelton will return as starter against the Seahawks.

Dockett said earlier this week he had apologized to Rhodes and the two had agreed to move on. But Dockett emphatically said he had never quit in a game and never would.

"It's something that I don't believe in, something that I didn't understand," Dockett said then. "It was frustrating at the time. At the end of the day, I am never, never going to lay down and quit. I've been playing football for over 20 years. I've given this organization, I've given Florida State, I've given my high school everything I've got. I love the game. I play with passion and I'll never quit."

The emotional, 6-foot-4, 290-pound, 31-year-old lineman is in his ninth NFL season, all with Arizona. He made the Pro Bowl in 2007 and 2009.

He earns $3.4 million this year on a contract that runs through 2015.
