Vizio M3D651SV

What a difference a year makes. When we tested Vizio's XVT3D650SV last year, we thought its $3,699.99 list price was reasonable for a full-featured 65-inch LED backlit HDTV with 3D capabilities. The company's latest 65-inch set, the M3D651SV ($1,749.99 list), rings up at less than half the price of last year's model, and it too offers LED backlighting and a boatload of features, including integrated Wi-Fi, passive 3D along with glasses, and plenty of Web apps. More importantly, it delivers a bright picture with solid blacks in both 2D and 3D mode. Its green levels are a tad high and its cabinet design is nothing to write home about, but neither gripe prevents it from becoming our latest Editors' Choice for midrange LCD HDTVs.

Design and Features
Like the aforementioned XVT3D650SV and the more recent Vizio M3D550KD, this set's plain-jane design won't win any style awards, but at 2.3 inches thick the cabinet is relatively slim. Wide (2-inch) rounded glossy black bezels frame the screen on all sides, and there's a black grilled speaker bar mounted below the bottom bezel. A bezel-free design such as the one featured on Toshiba's 55L7200U would look more elegant, but would likely also command a steeper price.

The huge, shiny, black oval stand does a fine job of supporting the 92.8-pound cabinet but does not provide swivel. There's a silver multifunction dial on the lower left side of the cabinet that controls power, volume, channel changes, and input source; you won't find any other function buttons on the set.

The unique double-sided remote is 6.3 inches long, 2 inches wide, and 0.6 inches thick. One side holds a typical set of buttons including a direction pad, number pad, four color keys, player controls, and dedicated 3D, Amazon, Netflix, and M-Go buttons. The buttons are smaller than what you'll find on most remotes, which can be problematic if you have big hands. The flip side is matte gray and contains a QWERTY keypad and four directional arrow keys. These keys are also small but come in handy when using the many Web apps that come with this set.

At the rear of the cabinet, two USB ports, four HDMI ports, and two audio outputs (optical and analog) face left, and LAN, VGA (PC video-in), PC audio-in, component audio and video jacks, and a cable/antenna coaxial connector face down. In addition to wired Ethernet, the M3D651SV offers built-in Wi-Fi networking via the single-band 802.11n radio.

The set comes with a full roster of Vizio Internet Apps (VIA) including Netflix, Hulu Plus, Amazon Instant Video, Rhapsody, Vudu, and the soon-to-be-released M-Go entertainment app. You also get Yahoo Weather, News, Sports, and Finance, as well as the Yahoo Connected TV Store which offers scores of free and paid apps.

Picture settings are plentiful. You get nine presets including Standard, Movie, Game, Vivid, Custom, and four Sports modes. With the exception of the Standard and Movie modes, I found the presets to be too bright and plagued by oversaturated colors.

Basic settings include Brightness, Contrast, Backlight, Color, Tint, and Sharpness. The Advanced Settings menu offers Smooth Motion and Real Cinema settings that can be used to smooth out jaggies and reduce judder, three Noise Reduction modes, Color Temperature with user adjustable RGB gain and offset levels, Backlight Control, and Adaptive Luma (dynamic brightness control). There's also an Ambient Light Sensor control that works with a built-in sensor to adjust backlighting according to room lighting conditions.

The M3D651SV uses passive technology to bring 3D to the big screen. Vizio bundles four pairs of lightweight, Roy Orbison-style glasses with this model, but if you need more you can always purchase an additional four-pack for $24.99.

Performance
Using images from the DisplayMate HDTV diagnostic tests and a Konica-Minolta chromameter, the M3D651SV produced a peak brightness measurement of 224.57 cd/m2 (candelas per square meter) and a nice deep black level of 0.02 cd/m2, resulting in an impressive contrast ratio of 11,228:1.

Color accuracy was generally good out of the box. Reds and blues were pretty much in line with the CIE 1931 chromaticity standards (see the chart below). Green levels were slightly warm but not to the point where they caused tinting or color tracking errors.

?

In my tests, the benefits of a generous contrast ratio became apparent while watching scenes from The Bourne Legacy on Blu-ray. Aerial flyover scenes of the snow-covered mountains really showed off the M3D651SV's ability to deliver very good shadow and highlight detail, and flesh tones were natural looking throughout the movie. Colors remained bold and the picture stayed bright when viewed from an extreme side angle.

The M3D651SV's passive 3D technology delivered good depth and a very bright picture while playing Sharks 3D. Watching 3D on a screen of this size really puts you on the center of the action. The picture was crisp and artifact-free for the most part, but there was a trace of crosstalk (image ghosting) when viewed from an extreme side angle, which is a common characteristic of passive 3D technology.

As with the Vizio E601I-A3, Vizio's non-3D 60-inch LED HDTV, the M3D651SV lacks the dedicated power-saving features that are standard issue on most HDTVs. The set averaged 145 watts of power during testing. That's a bit more than what we saw with the E601I-A3 (118 watts), but still not what you would call a power hog for its size.

Conclusions
With the Vizio M3D651SV you get your money's worth and then some. Its huge 65-inch LED illuminated screen, sharp imagery, and generous interactive Web app catalog are enough to recommend it to anyone looking for a big-screen HDTV for under $2,000. Throw in passive 3D with four sets of glasses, Wi-Fi, and a neat little remote with a QWERTY keypad, and you've got our latest Editors' Choice for midrange LCD HDTVs.

Obama remains committed to assault weapons ban, White House ...

WASHINGTON (CNN) ? The White House said President Barack Obama supports reinstatement of a federal ban on assault weapons ? a position he took in the 2008 campaign but failed to press during his first term.

?It does remain a commitment of his,? presidential spokesman Jay Carney told reporters as the nation reeled from a mass shooting in Connecticut that mainly killed school children.

An emotional Obama did not address that issue directly in a televised statement from the White House on the shootings at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown that killed 26 people but said something had to be done.

?We?re going to have to come together and take meaningful action to prevent more tragedies like this, regardless of the politics,? said Obama, the father of two girls.

He wiped away tears when he spoke of the ?beautiful little kids? killed in the massacre.

Police recovered three weapons from the scene: a semi-automatic .223 Bushmaster rifle, a Glock and a Sig Sauer, both handguns, according to a source with knowledge of the investigation.

Others also spoke out for a strong federal response.

?We cannot simply accept this as a routine product of modern American life. If now is not the time to have a serious discussion about gun control and the epidemic of gun violence plaguing our society, I don?t know when is,? Rep. Jerrold Nadler, D-New York, said in a statement.

Congress approved a ban on assault weapons in 1994. The prohibition, which expired in 2004, did not eliminate them, but restricted their features, limiting magazine capacity to 10 rounds and regulating pistol grips, bayonet attachments and flash suppressors.

Gun rights generally divide Americans.

A Pew poll conducted after the 2011 assassination attempt on Rep. Gabrielle Giffords, D-Arizona, that killed six other people, found that 49% of Americans said it was ?more important to protect the rights of Americans to own guns,? while 46% said it was ?more important to control gun ownership.?

But a survey conducted by CNN/ORC International in August shortly after the deadly theater mass shooting earlier this year in Aurora, Colorado, found that 76% of those surveyed believe ?there should be some restrictions on owning guns.?

Obama supported a platform while running for president in 2008 that included reinstating the assault weapons ban, but has largely avoided the issue of gun control during his first term.

He wrote an opinion piece two months after the Giffords shooting acknowledging the importance of the Second Amendment right to bear arms and called for a ?focus? on ?effective steps that will actually keep those irresponsible, law-breaking few from getting their hands on a gun in the first place.?

Obama said at a presidential debate in October that he wanted a ?broader conversation? in general about reducing gun violence.

?Part of it is seeing if we can get an assault weapons ban reintroduced,? he said.

The National Rifle Association, which advocates for gun rights, said in a statement it would not have anny comment on the Connecticut shooting ?until the facts are thoroughly known.?

Kristin Goss, an associate professor of public policy and political science at Duke University and author of ?Disarmed: The Missing Movement for Gun Control in America? earlier this year that the pro gun control side of the issue ?has struggled to come up with a compelling narrative? to convince more people to support stricter gun laws.

?For a long time, these gun violence rates and massacres speak for themselves. They relied on that to make the case but were up against a very powerful but very well disciplined and skillful army that was good at taking those arguments apart,? Goss said.

AirAsia orders 100 more A320s from Airbus

PARIS (AP) ? Airbus says AirAsia, southeast Asia's top budget carrier, is ordering 100 additional A320 single-aisle jets in a deal that greatly increases the Malaysian-based carrier's orders for the European aircraft.

In a statement Thursday Airbus says the deal brings the total number of A320 aircraft ordered or already delivered to AirAsia to 475.

AirAsia currently flies a fleet of 100 A320s out of bases in Bangkok, Kuala Lumpur, Jakarta, Manila and Tokyo.

The new jets will allow AirAsia to open new routes and increase frequencies on flights to the Philippines and Japan, AirAsia CEO Tony Fernandes said in a statement.

The deal includes orders for 64 of the A320neo, a revamped model which Airbus advertises as more fuel efficient version of the A320.

Russia says Syrian opposition could defeat government: agencies

MOSCOW (Reuters) - Rebel forces are gaining ground against the Syrian government and could win the war against President Bashar al-Assad, the Kremlin's envoy for Middle East affairs said on Thursday.

Deputy Foreign Minister Mikhail Bogdanov also said Russia was working on plans to evacuate its citizens from Syria if necessary,.

"One must look the facts in the face. The regime and government in Syria is losing control of more and more territory," Russian state-run RIA quoted Bogdanov as saying.

"Unfortunately, the victory of the Syrian opposition cannot be ruled out."

His remarks were the clearest sign yet that Russia is preparing for the possible defeat of Assad's government at the hands of opponents in a conflict that has killed more than 40,000 people since March 2011.

"We are dealing with issues of preparations for an evacuation. We have mobilization plans and are clarifying where our citizens are located," Bogdanov said.

Russia, which has shielded Assad's government from censure by the U.N. Security Council and resisted Western pressure to join efforts to push him from power, will continue to insist upon a peaceful resolution, he said.

Beyond picky eaters: When your kid is too thin

At barely 25 pounds, 3-year-old Weston Carmann is about the size of an average 20-month-old. Like 3.5 percent of U.S. kids, he?s underweight, a barely recognized condition in a nation where two-thirds of children and teens are overweight or obese. But kids who are too thin are just as much of a worry, their parents say.

'Lincoln,' 'Argo' among Golden Globe nominees

By Gael Fashingbauer Cooper, NBC News

Steven Spielberg's "Lincoln," which tells the story of the famed president's final days in office, earned seven Golden Globe nominations Thursday, including best movie in the drama category, best director for Spielberg, best actor for Daniel Day-Lewis and best supporting actress for Sally Field as Mary Todd Lincoln.

The movies nominated for best drama were pretty much as critics predicted. In addition to "Lincoln," "Argo," "Django Unchained," "Life of Pi" and "Zero Dark Thirty" earned nominations.

Lesser-seen films dominated the film comedy and musical category. "The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel," "Les Miserables," "Moonrise Kingdom," "Salmon Fishing in the Yemen" and "Silver Linings Playbook." Of those, "Les Miserables" is the only one to be opening in thousands of mainstream theaters, and that not until Christmas Day.

Major names filled the best director category. Ben Affleck was nominated for "Argo," Kathryn Bigelow for "Zero Dark Thirty," Ang Lee for "Life of Pi," Steven Spielberg for "Lincoln" and Quentin Tarantino for "Django Unchained."

On the television side, "Breaking Bad," "Boardwalk Empire," "Downton Abbey," "Homeland" and "The Newsroom" were drama nominees. ?"The Big Bang Theory," "Episodes," "Girls," "Modern Family" and "Smash" were nominated for best TV musical or comedy.

After the nominations were announced, Christoph Waltz, nominated for best supporting actor for his role as a dentist-turned-bounty hunter in Tarantino's "Django Unchained," talked to TODAY's Savannah Guthrie about his reaction.

Waltz noted that his name was the last of the five to be read, saying that by that point, he'd thought to himself, "I kinda know what I need to do in January anyway," only to be surprised by his inclusion.?

"Django Unchained" opens Dec. 25, which Waltz noted is very late in the awards season. "I see it picking up steam," he told Guthrie.

Waltz also said he felt lucky to be able to help develop his character along with Tarantino.

"I was allowed to kind of follow the genesis," he told Guthrie. "I saw this character come to existence ... become a personage."

Naomi Watts was nominated in the best actress category for her movie "The Impossible," which focuses on a family's experience during the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami. She told the TODAY anchors she was celebrating her son's birthday with pancakes when she received word she was nominated.

"I did a little yelp and my son got worried," she said.

There was little dialogue in "The Impossible," much of which was shot in water, not exactly a favorite substance for Watts.

"I had a bad experience with riptides, like, when I was a teenager," she said, telling of a time in Bali when her family was trapped in waters rougher than expected. Her mother, she said, "miraculously" found solid footing and pulled her daughter to safety.

"I've had a fear of water ever since," she said.

Bradley Cooper, a nominee for best actor for "Silver Linings Playbook," also spoke with the TODAY anchors about the awards. "Silver Linings Playbook" is also nominated in the best movie, comedy or musical category, and Cooper's co-star Jennifer Lawrence also received an acting nomination.

"It's a small film, and it's a word-of-mouth movie," Cooper said. "And hopefully the fact that it's getting this kind of attention, more people will go see it."

Cooper heard his nomination announced by his friend and "Hangover" co-star Ed Helms. "On a personal level, it's just surreal," he said of being nominated. "I grew up the nerd who would like, wait to hear the announcements."

He also said his date for the awards would almost certainly be his mother.

Tina Fey and Amy Poehler, both nominees in the TV best actress category, will host the Golden Globes, which air on NBC Jan. 13.
