S.C. woman, oldest living U.S. citizen, dies at 114

A 114-year-old South Carolina woman who was the oldest living U.S. citizen has died, two of her daughters said Saturday.

Mamie Rearden of Edgefield, who held the title as the country's oldest person for about two weeks, died Wednesday at a hospital in Augusta, Ga., said Sara Rearden of Burtonsville, Md., and Janie Ruth Osborne of Edgefield. They said their mother broke her hip after a fall about three weeks ago.

Gerontology Research Group, which verifies age information for Guinness World Records, listed Mamie Rearden as the oldest living American after last month's passing of 115-year-old Dina Manfredini of Iowa. Rearden's Sept. 7, 1898, birth was recorded in the 1900 U.S. Census, the group's Robert Young said.

Rearden was more than a year younger than the world's oldest person, 115-year-old Jiroemon Kimura of Japan.

"My mom was not president of the bank or anything, but she was very instrumental in raising a family and being a community person," said Sara Rearden, her youngest child. "Everybody can't go be president of a bank or president of a college, but we feel just as proud of her in her role as housewife and particularly as mother and homemaker."

Mamie Rearden, who was married to her husband Oacy for 59 years until his death in 1979, raised 11 children, 10 of whom survive, Sara Rearden said. She lived in the family homestead with a son and a daughter on land that had been in the family since her father's accumulation of acreage made him one of the area's largest black landowners.

Her father sent her off to earn a teaching certificate at Bettis Academy on the far side of the county, spending an entire day on a loaded wagon to reach the school along dirt roads, her daughter said. She taught for several years until becoming pregnant with her third child.

In the mid-1960s at age 65, when some settled into retirement, she learned to drive a car for the first time and started volunteering for an Edgefield County program that had her driving to the end of remote rural roads to find children whose parents were keeping them home from school, Sara Rearden said.

Mamie Rearden always counseled that her children should treat others as they wanted to be treated and that included never gossiping or speaking ill of others. When asked about a preacher's uninspiring sermon, her daughter recalled her mother saying: "'Well, it came from the Bible.' She never would bad-mouth them."

(AP) ? "Grey's Anatomy" star Patrick Dempsey may be the real "McSteamy."

The actor, who was dubbed "McDreamy" as a star of the hospital drama while his co-star was called "McSteamy," may soon be serving hot, steaming cups of Joe.

Dempsey won a bankruptcy auction to buy Tully's Coffee, a small coffee chain based in Seattle. Among those he beat out is Tully's much bigger Seattle neighbor, Starbucks Corp., which is known for its ubiquitous white cups with a circular green mermaid logo.

Dempsey, whose company Global Baristas LLC plans to keep the Tully's name, declared victory on the social media site Twitter: "We met the green monster, looked her in the eye, and...SHE BLINKED! We got it! Thank you Seattle!

The win for Dempsey deals a rare setback for Starbucks on its home turf. Starbucks has long been both praised for bringing "coffeehouse culture" to the U.S. and criticized for crushing smaller chains. The coffee giant, which had planned to convert the Tully's cafes to its own brand, last month announced plans to expand its global footprint to 20,000 cafes over the next two years, up from the current 18,000.

Dempsey said in an interview on Friday that as the underdog in Seattle, Tully's will need to find its identity.

"It's a much smaller chain that has a lot of potential that hasn't been given the proper care," he said.

But in a statement shortly after the auction on Thursday, Starbucks insinuated that Dempsey shouldn't celebrate just yet.

Starbucks, which wanted to convert the Tully's cafes to its own brand, said that a final determination on the winning bid won't be made until a court hearing on Jan. 11. Starbucks said it's in a "back-up" position" to buy 25 of the 47 Tully's cafes, with another undisclosed bidder making an offer for the remainder.

The combined bids of Starbucks and the undisclosed bidder come to $10.6 million, above the $9.2 million Dempsey's company is offering to pay through his company, which was formed in order to purchase Tully's. The other investors in Global Baristas aren't being disclosed.

Tully's Coffee, which is known for serving Joe with a milder taste than Starbucks brand, filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in October, citing lease obligations and underperforming stores. Tully's wholesale business, which includes Tully's Coffee in bags and single serve K-cup packs that are sold in supermarkets and other stores, is owned separately by Green Mountain Coffee Roasters Inc.

TC Global Inc., the parent company of Tully's, said in a release Friday that it was "encouraged and excited" about Dempsey's commitment to the chain.

Tully's President and CEO Scott Pearson called the deal a "great match" and that the goal is to make sure creditors get paid and to keep as many people employed as possible.

Dempsey said he planned to be very involved in the running of the company, adding that the immediate challenges were to address bookkeeping issues, staff morale and sprucing up the coffee shops. Once the business is stabilized, Dempsey said the long-term goal would be to take the chain national.

"We can pull this off. We just have to take steps that are slow and smart," he said. "I'm going to get behind the counter. I'm going to serve coffee...I'm going to give the company a boost of energy."

Although Dempsey lives in Los Angeles, he plans to spend more time in Seattle, the city where "Grey's Anatomy" is set in. Dempsey said he believed there is room in the city for Tully's and the much larger Starbucks; he noted there might be people who are rooting for the underdog.

"In a society where there are so many big corporations that swallow the little guy, we thought, let's not let this happen to this company," he said.

Dempsey made an appearance Friday morning at a Tully's near Pike Place Market, shaking hands with workers and greeting customers before visiting other stores. Several dozen people, mostly women, came into the store.

Patrease Estelle, 45, works nearby, and came in with a small group from her office.

"I will take whatever I can get. A photo, a hug, a 'hey, how you doing,' a wink," said Estelle, who got a picture and handshake with the actor.

NEW DELHI (AP) ? The suffering of a university student and her male friend who were brutally attacked aboard a bus in India's capital did not end after the woman was gang-raped and both were savagely beaten for 2 1/2 hours. Dumped naked on a roadside, the pair encountered shocking apathy as passersby offered only cursory looks and police debated jurisdiction for 30 minutes before taking them to a hospital, where the man received no treatment as he sat without clothes on the floor for hours, the friend recounted in a television interview.

The interview Friday marked the first time the man, who has not been named, has spoken publicly about the Dec. 16 attack in New Delhi.

The attack has outraged Indians and led to calls for tougher rape laws and reforms of a police culture that often blames rape victims and refuses to file charges against accused attackers. The nation's top law enforcement official said the country needs to crack down on crimes against women with "an iron hand."

The 23-year-old woman died last weekend from massive internal injuries suffered during the attack. Authorities charged five men with her murder and rape and were holding a sixth suspect believed to be a juvenile. A hearing in the case was scheduled for Saturday.

On the night of the attack, the woman and her companion had just finished watching the movie "Life of Pi" at an upscale mall and were looking for a ride home. An autorickshaw driver declined to take them, so they boarded the private bus with the six assailants inside, the companion told the Indian network Zee TV.

Authorities have not named the man because of the sensitivity of the case. Zee TV also declined to give his name, although it did show his face during the interview. The man has a broken leg and was sitting in a wheelchair during the interview.

After a while, the men on the bus starting harassing and attacking the pair, he said.

"I gave a tough fight to three of them. I punched them hard. But then two others hit me with an iron rod," he said. The woman tried to call the police using her mobile phone, but the men took it away from her, he said. They then took her to the rear seats of the bus and raped her.

"The attack was so brutal I can't even tell you ... even animals don't behave like that," the man said.

Afterward, he overheard some of the attackers saying the woman was dead, he said.

The men then dumped their bleeding and naked bodies under an overpass. The woman's companion waved to passersby on bikes, in autorickshaws and in cars for help, but no one stopped. "They slowed down, looked at our naked bodies and left," he said.

"My friend was grievously injured and bleeding profusely," he said. "Cars, autos and bikes slowed down and sped away. I kept waving for help. The ones who stopped stared at us, discussing what could have happened. Nobody did anything."

After about 20 minutes, three police vans arrived, but the officers argued over who had jurisdiction over the crime as the man pleaded for clothes and an ambulance, he said.

Finally, he said, they were taken to a hospital.

"When we reached the hospital, I sat without clothes on the floor for a long time even as my friend was taken inside for treatment," he said.

The man said he was given no medical care. He then spent four days at the police station helping police investigate the crime. He said he visited his friend in the hospital, told her the attackers were arrested and promised to fight for her.

He said his friend was determined to see that the attackers were punished. "She gave all details of the crime to the magistrate ? things we can't even talk about," he said. "She told me that the culprits should be burnt alive."

The man said he gave the TV interview because he hopes it will encourage rape victims to come forward and speak about their ordeals without shame.

"She has awakened us all by her courage," he said of his friend, who died at a Singapore hospital after being flown there for treatment. "People should move ahead in the struggle to prevent a similar crime happening again as a tribute to her."

Most people in India are reluctant to get involved in police business because once they become witnesses, they can be dragged into legal cases that can go on for years. Also, Indian police are often seen less as protectors and more as harassers.

On Friday, Home Minister Sushilkumar Shinde said crimes against women and marginalized sections of society are increasing, and it is the government's responsibility to stop them.

"This needs to be curbed by an iron hand," he told a conference of state officials from across India that was called to discuss how to protect women.

He called for changes in the law and the way police investigate cases so justice can be swiftly delivered. Many rape cases are bogged down in India's overburdened and sluggish court system for years.

"We need a reappraisal of the entire system," he said.

In the wake of the rape, several petitioners appealed to the Supreme Court to take an active role in the issue of women's safety.

On Friday, the court dismissed a petition asking it to suspend Indian lawmakers accused of crimes against women, saying it doesn't have jurisdiction, according to the Press Trust of India. The Association for Democratic Reforms, an organization that tracks officials' criminal records, said six state lawmakers are facing rape prosecutions and two national parliamentarians are facing charges of crimes against women that fall short of rape.

However, the court did agree to look into the widespread creation of more fast-track courts for accused rapists across the country.

Citigroup to seek permission to buy back shares: WSJ

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Citigroup Inc is planning to ask regulators for permission to buy back a "minimal" number of shares, the Wall Street Journal reported on Friday.

The bank is not planning to ask to increase its quarterly dividend, which is currently a penny a share, the newspaper reported, citing people familiar with the company's plans.

Citigroup Chairman Michael O'Neill and newly installed CEO Michael Corbat have told company executives that the capital plan the company submits to the Federal Reserve must be so conservative that it will not be rejected, the Journal said.

Big banks are due to submit their capital plans to the Fed on Monday.

Another bank, JPMorgan Chase & Co , has reason to be "cautiously optimistic" about its chances of winning approval to raise its dividend and buy back more stock, an official who asked not to be named told Reuters.

In November, JPMorgan won approval from the Fed to resume previously approved buybacks it had suspended in May after a multi-billion dollar loss surfaced on derivatives transactions in its London office. JPMorgan's operations have generated more than enough capital to cover those losses.

The Journal reported that Morgan Stanley will focus its plan for the Fed on using its capital to complete its purchase of Citigroup's minority stake of a joint venture the two companies have in a wealth-management business. A spokesman for the investment bank declined to comment.

Citigroup's last annual plan was rejected by the Fed in March after former CEO Vikram Pandit led analysts and investors to believe the company would be allowed to spend a few billion dollars on share buybacks and additional dividends. The rejection became a major embarrassment for the bank and contributed to the board's decision to replace Pandit.

Vegetarian Recipe: Fennel alla Parmigiana | Good Food

Home ? Cooking, Farmers Market, Featured, Italian, Recipes, Tomatoes, Veg

Finocchio alla ParmigianaWithout a doubt my favorite way to prepare many vegetables is to oil braise them, in extra virgin olive oil, of course. ?The method is used all over the mediterranean, ?especially in Turkey where the oil itself (as well as the whole category of things braised in it) are called?zeytinagli. ?Vegetables braised in oil with tomatoes or herbs and aromatics like onion have a luscious, satisfying mouth feel and are deeply flavored of themselves. ?They?re incredibly easy to make and are often even more delicious cold from the refrigerator the next day. ?Just be sure to have some great bread on the table because you won?t want to waste any of the syrupy reduced juices.

Finocchio alla Parmigiana is an Italian classic that is often made by par boiling the fennel then topping it with tomato and parmesan for a quick pop in the oven until bubbly. ?But I prefer to start off by braising the fennel. ?Then the dusting of grated parmesan and oven gratinee is merely a final send off to a dish already imbued with richness and flavor.

Side Note:
These dishes are rich and satisfying because of the amount of olive oil in them. ?Don?t be tempted to reduce the amount of oil. ?Serve it instead of meat as the main part of the meal accompanied by a fresh crunchy salad, good bread and maybe a bit of fresh cheese like chevre or feta. ?Also delicious with grilled fish.

Braised Fennel

?

????Print This!????

Fennel alla Parmigiana

Look for round bulby fennel. ?They are sweeter than the flat ones.

4 large round bulbs fennel
1 cup extra virgin olive oil
1 cup water
1 cup tomato sauce or peeled chopped tomatoes
Salt to taste

Trim fennel and remove the very fibrous outer layer of the bulb. ?You might feel like you?re wasting a lot of vegetation but your worms or compost pile will be happy. ?Cut the bulbs in half vertically. ?If they are quite large you may cut them in quarters. ?Find a saucepan or casserole dish that just fits all the fennel in one layer with no gaps. ?This is a key part of the process. ?Large empty spaces in the pan can result in burning and uneven cooking.Fennel + Tomato Sauce

Pour the olive oil and water over the fennel. ?Salt to taste and dot the tomato sauce over the cut bulbs. ?Now take a piece of parchment paper and cover the fennel. ?The paper should be touching the fennel and tucked into the sides of the pan. ?This allows faster cooking and keeps flavor in.

Bring liquid in pan to a simmer and cook for about 15-20 minutes or until the fennel is tender when pierced with a paring knife. ?You can lift the parchment to check but tuck it back over for further cooking. ?When the fennel is yielding to the knife remove the parchment. ?If there is still a lot of liquid then turn the fire up and let it bubble away to reduce. ?You want some nice syrupy juices.

Parchment LidNow you?re done cooking the fennel. ?You can serve it this way. ?But if you wish, carefully lift out the soft bulbs and place in oven proof dish or casserole. ?Sprinkle with imported Italian grated parmesan and place in 375 degree oven until dotted golden brown. ?Serve immediately or let cool and serve at room temperature.

Spotify halts track purchases in the UK, says it's 'simplifying' the service

We're not sure how many Brits use Spotify to actually buy individual tracks, considering that the service is mainly known for streaming and "offline" playback, but the question has suddenly become academic. Anyone in the UK who tries to use the desktop app to buy new music will now be confronted with the message above. It offers little explanation of what's going on but does at least link to a help page that reassures those who already possess unused download credits or gift cards. Spotify sent us the following statement, which is pretty abstract but makes it clear this is more than temporary:

We recently updated Spotify to further simplify the service and pave the way for new features announced at the end of last year. In-app purchases aren't part of this update but we're not ruling out their return. Credits/gift cards already purchased are still redeemable.

Update: We hear from a reader in Sweden that the same thing has happened in that country -- so it probably applies internationally, wherever the download option was originally available. Spotify in the US was already streaming-only, so American users will likely notice no change.

Why we need pirates in cyberspace

Whenever governments have tried to regulate new common areas ? from oceans to airwaves ? pirates have moved in. They remind us that some areas should be free.?

In this February 2012 photo, protestors wearing Guy Fawks masks hold the logos of the international hacker group Anonymous during a demonstration against the Anti-Counterfeiting Trade Agreement, ACTA, in Budapest, Hungary. The shadowy world of Internet hackers and pranksters is emerging as an important counter to government attempts to regulate cyberspace.

In a nutshell, the two countries suggested bringing the Internet under the control of the United Nations? International Telecommunications Union. By proposing multinational control over the Internet, including over its numbering and naming system, China and Russia upset a few governments, especially the Obama administration. Why?

First, because the numbering and naming system is currently supervised by ICANN, a non-profit organization closely tied to the US government. And second, because the United States is the home of the most powerful private players that shape the norms of cyberspace ? while conducting a very profitable business (think of Google, Twitter, Apple, Cisco, Facebook, and Amazon). Quite understandably, the US would rather let these friendly corporations run their businesses without the interference of foreign powers.

If we consider cyberspace a common good for humankind, providing equal power and voting rights to all sovereign states represented at the United Nations seems appealing at first sight. But think about the implications: the US, one vote; Saudi Arabia, one vote; Iran, one vote; Zimbabwe, one vote. As it turns out, a large proportion of UN member states are undemocratic or outright dictatorial. So it may not be not such a good idea to let the UN regulate cyberspace.

Greece's Samaras to visit Germany next week

BERLIN (AP) ? The German government says Chancellor Angela Merkel will meet Greek Prime Minister Antonis Samaras in Berlin next week.

Merkel spokesman Steffen Seibert said Merkel will welcome Samaras to the chancellery on Tuesday.

He said Friday that the informal meeting offers an opportunity for the two leaders to review progress that Greece has made in implementing reform plans. Samaras will be in Berlin to attend a closed-doors economic conference organized by a German newspaper.

Greece has been kept afloat since May 2010 by rescue loans from the other 16 eurozone countries and the International Monetary Fund. In return for the loans, the lenders ? Merkel's Germany in particular ? insisted on a series of economic reforms, tax raises and spending cuts.
