Movie review: 'Chicken With Plums' an inventive dish | The Salt Lake ...

Violinist Nasser Ali Khan (Mathieu Amalric) confines himself to his bedroom to die, in the drama "Chicken With Plums." Patricia Khan | Sony Pictures Classics

Review ? ?Persepolis? duo brings visual flair to live-action tale.

The lyrical fantasy "Chicken With Plums" is, like the recipe for which it?s named, a meaty dish with sweet-and-sour overtones.

This is the first live-action film by Marjane Satrapi and Vincent Paronnaud, the team who made the riveting 2007 animated film "Persepolis." Like that film, this one is adapted from Satrapi?s graphic novel and is set in her former home, Iran.

?Chicken With Plums?

A melancholy musician waits for the end in this visually stunning drama from the makers of ?Persepolis.?

Where ? Broadway Centre Cinemas.

When ? Opens Friday, Oct. 12.

Rating ? PG-13 for some drug content, violent images, sensuality and smoking.

Running time ? 93 minutes; in French, with subtitles.

But where "Persepolis" was a gritty memoir of a girl?s growing up modern in a land rejecting Western modernism, "Chicken With Plums" is squarely set both in the past and the fantasy world of a dying man?s dreams.

It begins with a renowned violinist, Nasser Ali Khan (played by the French star Mathieu Amalric), who has given up the will to make music. So he decides to go to bed and die there. Eight days later, he does. (This information is given very early in the film.) What Satrapi and Paronnaud show next is how those eight days proceed.

Each day in bed, Nasser Ali contemplates what led him to want his life to end. We see his loveless marriage to the sensible Faringuisse ("Pulp Fiction?s" Maria de Medeiros), who supports the family when Nasser Ali?s music cannot. We meet his imperious mother (Isabella Rossellini) and his aged music teacher (Didier Flamand), a master who praises his student?s technique but hears no soul ? no "sigh" ? in his music.

We also see the woman, Iran (Golshifteh Farahani), who gave him that sigh.

Satrapi and Paronnaud, in flights of cinematic fancy, also take the story forward past Nasser Ali?s death. We witness what becomes of his daughter, Lili (played as a jaded adult by Chiara Mastroianni), and his son, Cyrus (played by Christian Friedel, in a hilarious parody of American sitcoms). And, in Nasser Ali?s nightmares, we see his encounter with the angel of death (Edouard Baer).

Amalric, best known to Americans from "The Diving Bell and the Butterfly" and as the last Bond villain (in "Quantum of Solace"), gives a performance that leaps from the melancholy to rapturous. At the same time, he anchors Satrapi and Paronnaud?s magical visual range and an emotional journey that zips from ecstasy to tragedy and back again.

Soft-shelled turtles excrete urea through mouth

Chinese soft-shelled turtles are exquisitely adapted to their aquatic lifestyle, sitting contentedly on the bottom of brackish muddy swamps or snorkelling at the surface to breath. According to Y. K. Ip from the National University of Singapore, they even immerse their heads in puddles when their swampy homes dry up: which intrigued Ip and his colleagues. Why do these air-breathing turtles submerge their heads when they mainly depend on their lungs to breathe and are unlikely to breathe in water? Given that some fish excrete waste nitrogen as urea in addition to ammonia and expel the urea through their gills, the team wondered whether the turtles were plunging their heads into water to excrete waste urea through their mouths, where they have strange gill-like projections. Ip and his colleagues publish their discovery that turtles effectively urinate through the mouth in The Journal of Experimental Biology at http://jeb.biologists.org.

Purchasing turtles from the local China Town wet market and immersing them in water for 6 days, the team measured the amount of urea that passed into the turtles' urine and found that only 6% of the total urea that the animals produced was excreted through the kidneys. Removing the turtles from the water and providing them with a puddle to dip their heads into, the team noticed that the turtles submerged their heads occasionally and could remain underwater for periods lasting up to 100 minutes. They also calculated the excretion rate of urea through the mouth by measuring the amount of urea that accumulated in the water and found that it was as much as 50 times higher than the excretion rate through the cloaca. And when the team injected urea into the turtles and measured their blood- and saliva-urea levels, they realised that the saliva-urea levels were 250 times greater than in the blood. The turtles were dipping their heads into water to excrete urea through their mouths.

Knowing this, the team reasoned that the animals must produce a specialised class of protein transporters in their mouths to expel the waste and, as these transporters can be deactivated by phloretin, the team decided to test the effect of phloretin on the turtle's ability to excrete urea. When the turtles were supplied with phloretin in their puddle of water, they were unable to excrete urea from their mouths when they submerged their head. And when the team analysed the turtles' cDNA, they found that the animals carried a gene that was very similar to urea transporters found in other animals. Finally, they checked to see if the turtles express this gene in their mouths and found evidence of the mRNA that is necessary to produce the essential urea transporter, allowing the reptiles to excrete urea waste through the mouth.

So, why do Chinese soft-shelled turtles go to such great lengths to excrete urea through their mouths when most other creatures do it through their kidneys? Ip and his colleagues suspect that it has something to do with their salty environment. Explaining that animals that excrete urea have to drink a lot, they point out that this is a problem when the only water available is salty especially for reptiles that cannot excrete the salts. The team says, 'Since the buccopharyngeal [mouth and throat] urea excretion route involves only rinsing the mouth with ambient water, the problems associated with drinking brackish water can be avoided'.

A doctor's perspective on how BPA in beverage containers impacts ...

Q: I read not so long ago that BPA may cause childhood obesity. Can you tell me if that is true and what should I do to limit my child's exposure to BPA?

A: BPA is the abbreviation for Bisphenol A, a breakdown product of coatings that prevent metal corrosion in food and beverage containers. It is used to manufacture polycarbonate resins. For a number of years, experts have become increasingly concerned that it may be unhealthy - especially to the very young. BPA was banned from baby bottles and sippy cups a few years ago.

However this chemical is still found in canned foods, some food packaging and polycarbonated-bottled liquids.

In a study published in the Journal of the American Medical Association on Sept. 9 researchers from the New York University School of Medicine found a significant association between BPA concentrations and obesity. The study was the first of its kind in children, making it a provocative and perhaps a landmark study.

It involved 2,838 participants between the ages of six and 19 years and subjects were randomly chosen, nationwide. The study was conducted between 2003 and 2008. The authors specifically looked at the urinary concentrations of BPA and obesity prevalence. (BPA in the urine does not rapidly decline with fasting time).

After controlling for the many other variables which contribute to obesity, such as race, ethnicity, age, caregiver education, poverty-to-income ratios, gender, caloric intake and television watching, the authors concluded that urinary BPA was significantly associated with obesity in children and adolescents.

The study specifically looked at obesity by using statistical methods and the body mass index (BMI z score) and did not research the association with being overweight. Typically obesity refers to a child whose BMI exceeds the 95th percentile while overweight refers to a child whose BMI is between the 85th and 95th percentile.

The study also looked at other chemicals and found that obesity was not associated with other environmental chemicals commonly used in consumer products such as soaps and sunscreens.

I have been the pediatrician at the Calgary Pediatric Weight Clinic for the past eight years and it has been my honour to help children reach their healthy weights for more than a few decades. When I see studies like this, and hear other experts debate it, I cannot help but wonder if the smoke indeed indicates there may be a fire. There may be an association, but it is too early to say it is a cause. We must remind ourselves that this was the first study in children.

In adults the association between BPA exposure and adult diabetes, cardiovascular diagnoses and abnormal liver functioning has been published previously. Most of the BPA children are exposed to come from dietary sources. After exposure, BPA gets stored in fat tissue and researchers call the relationship between BPA exposure and urinary BPA concentrations "complex."

Data in the U.S. suggest associations between urinary BPA and consumptions of sodas in cans, school lunches and meals prepared outside the home, but not bottled water or canned tuna.

We are not sure if the timing of the exposure matters. It may be that earlier exposure sets the stage. It may be that there are also different responses to BPA based on genetic or epigenomic characteristics. In the New York study published a few weeks ago, among white children the association between urinary BPA and obesity was particularly strong and significant. Estrogen levels in males are associated with obesity and BPA has a mild estrogenic effect, increasing the estrogen levels in males.

The fact that BPA was banned from baby bottles and sippy cups is significant. Turtles don't end up on posts on their own and banning BPA exposure to babies and toddlers did not just happen overnight.

Much research and debating preceded that decision - which in fact took place in Canada before it took place in the U.S. Last year the FDA declined to ban BPA in aluminum cans and other food packaging, but they noted that "we will take reasonable steps to reduce human exposure to BPA in the human food supply and continue to consider evidence on the safety of the chemical."

My advice for now to the patients I see in the Pediat-ric Weight Clinic and in my community-based office is to be aware of this study. It is a start. As the authors themselves admit, there are limitations and we are not yet 100 per cent sure how exactly BPA may play a role, if at all.

The Princeton Review | Best 296 Business Schools | 2013 Edition

The School of Management is in the new 2013 edition of its annual guidebook, ?The Best 296 Business Schools.? This latest recognition comes less than a month after SOM was named one of the Best Undergraduate Business Programs in the Midwest by U.S. News? ?Best Colleges 2013.?

?We consider UM-Flint?s School of Management one of the best institutions a student could attend to earn an MBA,? according to Robert Franek, Princeton Review Senior VP-Publisher. ?We selected the schools we profile in this book?280 of which are in the U.S.A. and 16 are international?based on our high regard for their academic programs and our reviews of institutional data we collect from the schools. We also solicit and greatly respect the opinions of students attending these schools who rate and report on their experiences at them on our 80-question survey for the book.?

The Princeton Review?s survey asked 19,000 students at the 296 schools their opinions of their school?s academics, student body and campus life as well as about themselves and their career plans. The student surveys analyzed for this edition were conducted during the 2009-2012 academic years.

It could not have been achieved without the dedication and hard work of our faculty and staff,? noted Vahid Lotfi, senior vice provost and acting dean of SOM. The recognition is also partly based upon feedback from our students, many of whom face complex lives. We are truly proud of them.?

How to Get More Done While Working Less - Legal Productivity

No, this isn?t about a 4-Hour Work Week. There is no such thing. It?s about having a productive work day. Not a productive work morning-evening-night. It?s those 8-10 hours that we put in every day at work. And no, it?s also not about about loving or not loving what you do. Sure, it?s a nice concept and it would be great if we could all be so engaged, but in the real world, not everyone has that privilege or that opportunity right now.

I?m talking about doing only two things ? ridding yourself of less-than-productive activities and responsibilities and clocking out at a regular time every day.

Reducing your peripheral vision

Too many things on your plate doesn?t slow you down, it stops you cold. When we?re overburdened, we tend to freeze up. We shut down, completely overwhelmed. If you think that certain tasks, after a period of experimentation don?t fit your strengths, have a conversation with your team about re-evaluating responsibilities.

Even more importantly, examine other responsibilities that are lingering that are not important but may be taking up time and dominating your thought process, affecting your ability to focus on the tasks at hand.

When I started at Rocket Matter, I still held on to fragments of my old CLE entrepreneurial venture. Even though I ramped down the day to day work of the venture, I still offered advice to those who inquired and referred gigs to others. Was it occupying actual time during my work hours? No, but just the knowledge that I needed to respond to a growing list of inquiries gnawed at me throughout the day. After awhile, I determined that it was not related to what I was doing now, and didn?t help, but hindered my productivity and progress.

It was tough to let go of something I had nurtured for years but when I did, it was like flipping a switch. A weight was lifted and my focus and productivity returned. So take a look at activities that may be keeping you back and close them out.

Clocking out

Think your boss is impressed with emails at 10pm? She isn?t. Instead she?s probably wondering why you weren?t focused enough during the work day to get the work done. And, she?s concerned that you?ll burn yourself out and become a less productive member of the team.

Instead, wrap up your work at a regular time each day. This is especially important for those who work from home. Shut down at six. Turn off Skype and email and leave the office, or if you?re home, get out of the house, or continue reading that page-turner of a book. If you give yourself all day and night to complete your work, it?ll take all day and night. But if you allot a scheduled 8-10 hours of work, you?ll become more focused and efficient about how you manage your time and tasks throughout the day.

After adopting these practices and settling into a productive routine, then you can consider other productivity measures like having a dumpster day, using the Pomodoro Technique, or getting to zero email inbox. But start with focus and routine.

Have you gone through a similar process? I?d love to have a discussion in the comments below about how you did it and discover other effective tips and methods, so please don?t hesitate to share.

Airlines eye subway-style self-boarding

19 hrs.

Self-service is king when it comes to flying these days, with travelers checking in online, downloading their own boarding passes and tagging their bags.

But passengers outside the U.S. often perform one more task on their own at the airport: self-boarding.

Scan your boarding pass at a gate equipped with a subway-like turnstile, and voil?, you?re on your way to the plane?no gate agent required.

It?s an option travelers seem to love: Almost 90 percent said self-boarding is their favorite self-service technology in a survey of more than 2,500 passengers from 70-plus countries released on Tuesday. The poll was conducted by SITA, a company that specializes in air transport communications.

You?ll likely encounter automated gates at airports in Europe or Asia, but in the United States, they are still a rare sight. One of the few places you?ll see them is at the shiny, new Terminal 3 at McCarran International Airport in Las Vegas, where JetBlue has been testing self-boarding since July.

?We are receiving positive feedback -- customers do like it and it does speed up the boarding process,? said JetBlue spokeswoman Tamara Young. ?There?s not the bunching that was previously experienced with the agents taking the tickets.?

Gate agents are still there, watching over the process to make sure travelers don?t encounter any snags, Young said.

Those snags are one of the reasons airlines have been proceeding carefully, industry observers said.

?If you've seen people using self-check-out at supermarkets, they aren't generally as adept at scanning bar codes as the actual check out personnel,? said Robert W. Mann Jr., an airline industry analyst.

?When you narrow it down to the pointy end of the funnel, when everybody is trying to get on the airplane through one door, the person who struggles with the scanning is holding up 150 people and they?re all (upset).?

Still, self-boarding seems to be an attractive option for both airlines and travelers.

Some 17 international carriers now use the technology and there are 113 automated gates at airports around the world, according to recent figures collected by the International Air Transport Association (IATA). The group, which represents some of the world?s biggest airlines, supports self-boarding as part of its "Fast Travel"?initiative.

Airlines that pioneered the process include SAS and Lufthansa in Europe, and All Nippon Airways in Asia, said IATA spokesman Perry Flint.

Passengers may like the service because it?s somewhat empowering, Mann said. Travel requires people to give up a lot of control over their environment, so this is a small instance where they can take charge.

But the cost of installing the gates may be an obstacle for carriers in the U.S., where airlines usually own or rent the check-in space in airports where they operate and can?t spread the expense among several different users, Flint said.

?It may not make economic sense for the airline to make that investment if they?re the only ones who are going to be using it and if they are already operating at a very high level of efficiency,? Flint said.

Bottom?line: Don?t look for automated self-boarding gates dominating U.S. airports any time soon, but be ready for subway-like boarding in other parts of the world.

And don?t forget your smartphone when you travel.

The SITA survey also found that the number of passengers with the gadgets has ?risen dramatically? over the past year, from 54 percent to 70 percent.

?We?re now at the tipping point of explosive growth in mobile services offered to passengers, which will give them more control over their journey and reduce stress,? said Francesco Violante, the CEO of SITA.

On Saturday, September 22, 2012 the Yuba-Sutter Regional Arts Council?s (YSRAC) first annual ?Harvest the Arts? event at Gallery34 brought together over 100 local artists, farmers, vintners, volunteers, performers and art and food lovers.? Nearly 30 agriculturalists from both Yuba and Sutter Counties donated locally grown foods and beverages, which they prepared for tastings or allowed the student chefs of Yuba College?s Culinary program? and their leader, Yuba County Supervisor, John Nicoletti, to work their cooking and presentation magic.

Some of the food and drink highlights included delectable grass fed tri-tip from High Sierra Beef, seasoned and charbroiled mushrooms from Mushroom Adventures, fruits and peach cobbler from Tony?s Fruit Stand made by The Brick, and basil/walnut pesto from Township Valley Farm.? A beautiful and tasty display of melon, cucumber and strawberries from Johnson U Pick, was created by the Yuba College? Culinary students.? Jim?s Produce, which farms organically grown foods and sells weekly produce boxes, provided much of the event?s produce and served delicious bruschetta featuring fresh tomatoes.? The Candy Box onD Street provided chocolate covered peaches and other dessert treats that melted on the palate. Sunsweet provided healthy fruit snack packs. Olive Oil samples from Calolea, Apollo, Sierra D? Oro and Yuba College?s own 49er Olive Oil labels were savory complements to the main dishes.

There was no shortage of liquid refreshment thanks to Lucerno Vineyards & Winery, Renaissance Wines, Grant Eddie Winery, Sutter Buttes Brewery and others who provided adult tastings.? Bishop?s Farm?s apple cider, River Brooke Farm?s lavender lemonade and The Brick?s cucumber water and iced peach tea were also not to be missed!

While guests enjoyed the beautifully presented and tasty food and beverages, they viewed original works by the 30+ resident artists at Gallery34 and delighted in the ongoing live pop-up entertainment ranging from singing, ballet, salsa dancing and instrumentals, to an especially lively song and dance routine performed by the Marysville Charter Academy.? The all-girls theater group brought the theme song from Cole Porter?s Tony Award Winning ?Anything Goes? to toe-tapping life on historic D Street. An amusing addition to the crowd was an Edgar Allen Poe character, portrayed by Bret Corey, who greeted all guests in appropriately Poe-like dress and morose demeanor.

The fundraising event included a fun and competitive cake auction, mediated by auctioneer and Sutter County Supervisor, Jim Whiteaker, with the comedic assistance of Carmen Smith, ?Harvest the Arts? Committee Chair, who also MC?d the evening?s events.? Raffle tickets were also available for purchase for a chance to win an original fused-glass ?painting? created by Paul Boehmke.

These events do not happen without the selfless dedication of active volunteers.? YSRAC warmly thanks the all-volunteer committee, made up of local artists and professionals, students of Yuba College?s Culinary program, food and beverage providers, performers, artists and countless others.? YSRAC also sends heartfelt thanks to corporate sponsors Butte Sand and Gravel, Calpine, Hilbers, Inc., Rabobank, Recology, Brown?s Gas Co. and US Bank.
