How to encourage innovation | ***** - SelfImprovement.ch

I once sat in a committee whose job was to come up with great and innovative ideas for the organization. Very few ideas came to the table. Some good ones were proposed but they were shot down with criticism or died due to lack on enthusiasm. The ideas which were put forward by the committee were compromises and safe bets. Nothing revolutionary and nothing out of the ordinary.

Thanks to my experience with this committee, I began searching the Internet with a mission to find 10 great ideas which resulted from a committee of individuals. I failed to find a single one. Can you think of one which resulted from a committee or a brainstorming session? Great ideas come to individual minds. By definition, most great ideas are radically different from the norm and most people fail to appreciate their value. If great ideas weren't so radically different, many of us would already have had those ideas and it probably would be common sense for many of us. Another human characteristic that blocks innovation is that most of us tend to resist change. Thus a committee will most likely kill or discourage a great idea instead of nurturing and encouraging it.

The consensus is usually the lowest common denominator. It is more likely to be something most people can agree on but it is not likely to be something radically new, revolutionary or great. No wonder, great ideas have to be marketed to us. Someone had to work very hard and invest a lot of money to market the first telephones, automobiles, passenger flights, and smart phones.

Ideas come to individual minds and they are developed by an individual or a small group of dedicated individuals. They are not born in brainstorming sessions or committee of experts who have very different backgrounds and who hold divergent opinions and visions on what is important, great, and useful.

To encourage innovation, corporations should encourage employees to come forward with their ideas and perhaps even plans to implement them. The organization should then evaluate the potential benefits of realizing the idea against the estimated cost of developing the idea. If the idea is not too expensive to develop, can be realized mostly with existing corporate resources, promises benefits above the cost of development, and is in line with corporate goals and strategy, it should get a green light. It is not possible to properly evaluate whether an idea would succeed or fail until it is implemented and put to test in the market. Years ago, who would have thought that bottled water would sell more than coca cola. Common sense tells us that no one will pay for something they can get for free.

Orionid meteor shower: Watch for fireballs during weekend peak

One of the more spectacular meteor showers of the year peaks overnight Saturday, with perhaps 60 visible meteors an hour. Fireballs ? any meteor brighter than Venus ? are likely as Orionids plunge into the atmosphere at 148,000 miles per hour.

By Pete Spotts,?Staff writer / October 19, 2012

Streaking fireballs light up California skies Oct. 17, the first night of the annual Orionid meteor shower, which runs through Oct. 25.

Skywatchers in the northern and southern hemispheres are in for a treat overnight Saturday, when the annual Orionid meteor shower ? an intimate encounter with remnants of comet Halley?s tail ? is expected to peak.

Weather willing, at least 25 meteors an hour should be visible in the predawn hours Sunday morning. By then, a crescent moon will have set, allowing a larger number of fainter meteors to stand out against the night sky.

But NASA?s all-sky cameras already are detecting meteor rates that suggest the show could be better, perhaps approaching 60 meteors an hour, says Bill Cooke, a meteor specialist at the NASA?s Marshall Space Flight Center in Huntsville, Ala., and head of the agency?s Meteoroid Environment Office.

?I?m cautiously optimistic,? he says of the shower, which began Oct. 17 and runs through Oct. 25 at a sky above you.

As if on cue, a fireball visible throughout much of central and southern California streaked across the sky Oct. 17, shortly before 8 p.m. Pacific Daylight Time. Observers reported three sonic booms tied to the fireball after it disappeared.

However, the event may have had little to do with the meteor shower. Long-time meteor observers, including Mike Hankey with the American Meteor Society, point out that meteors from comets tend to be tiny grains of ice and dust. This reflects the composition of the comets that shed the detritus as they make their closest approach to the sun and heat up. This material vaporizes at very high altitudes.

The object that plunged to Earth Wednesday evening ? which some witnesses said broke into fragments as it plunged ? was more likely a chunk of asteroid. The sonic booms people heard indicate that it reached the lower atmosphere.

Even so, Orionid meteoroids generate fireballs as well, Mr. Cooke says, owing to the high speeds at which they enter the atmosphere. At 148,000 miles an hour, these meteoroids are outpaced only by meteoroids associated with the Leonid shower, which appears each November.

?If I?m blazing into the atmosphere fast, I don?t have to be very big to leave a brilliant mark in the sky,? he says.

The fireballs the Orionids generate occur at altitudes of about 60 miles. A fireball is defined as any meteor brighter than Venus. NASA has logged at least two Orionid fireballs so far during this month?s shower.

The shower takes its name from the constellation Orion. The shower?s radiant ? the region of the sky from which the meteors appear to emerge ? appears just to the left of Orion?s right shoulder, marked by Betelgeuse, a red supergiant star and one of the largest, brightest stars in the night sky.

Part of the shower?s appeal lies in its radiant?s classy location. It sits surrounded by some of the most recognizable constellations in the night sky: Gemini; Orion, with his belt and sword; and Canis Major, Orion?s hunting companion. Canis Major hosts the double star Sirius. At 8.6 light-years from Earth, Sirius A, the brightest of the two, outshines all the other stars visible to the naked eye.

So while you wait for a meteor, you still have other cosmic eye candy to enjoy.

Beyond the beauty, Cooke adds, is the fact that the meteors are from Halley?s comet, providing an annual show that outclasses the last appearance of Halley itself in 1986, which he witnessed, and is likely to outclass Halley?s next appearance in 2061.

?This is my consolation,? Cook says with a chuckle. ?If I can?t see a good Halley?s comet, at least I can see pieces of it burning up in the atmosphere.?

Finding Ideas For Article Writing When You Are Out And About ...

Finding Ideas for Article Writing When You Are Out And About - Advice for Newbies

If you?re trying to generate ideas for article writing, it can be easy to think that this all has to be done by sitting and researching online. Although the internet is an enormous and wonderful resource for finding out information and stimulating new ideas, if you?re creating content on a regular basis it can also be useful to step away from your computer and in the course of your day take note of things around you that can stimulate ideas. Try and be flexible and allow your mind just to have fun and finding ideas for article writing will come from the most surprising places.

Other peoples conversations

I?m sure you?re thinking that you don?t make a habit of listening to other people?s conversations, but often it?s very difficult not to. People talking on their phones, in the street, on public transport. People holding conversations in doctor?s waiting rooms, dentists, hospital waiting rooms, hairdressers, in cafes and bars. You don?t need to listen to hear whole conversations, even small snippets can generate ideas. What are their fears, their worries, the problems they have and need solving?

Shop window displays

Look at what they are promoting and how they?re promoting it. What story are they telling? What need are they trying to fulfill? Your online business may be completely different, but that doesn?t mean there isn?t something that you can?t make a connection to and write about.

Flyers and posters

Sometimes it seems you can?t walk down a street without someone trying to press a flyer in your hand. As tempting as it may be to just put it in the nearest bin, take a quick look. Similarly instead of just walking on past advertising hoardings, see if there?s anything that stimulates your interest.

Public announcements

Yes even public announcements in train, bus, or coach stations or ones inside shops can be interesting. Quite often one hears poor examples of communication skills, customer service, time management, organisational skills or even funny announcements that can spark ideas and help you find ideas for article writing.

Hustle and bustle of life

Just in the course of a normal day you will be interacting with lots of different people. Some of these interactions whether they be positive or negative can be used to generate further ideas. Sometimes it may be conversations, it may be the manner of someone, it may be the way their dressed, it may be something that they?re doing. And of course ? although I?ve said about the hustle and bustle of life they are just as many times to gain ideas at quieter times such as a walk in the country, a jog along the beach...

Summary

When you?re out and about on an everyday basis you will come across many things which can help you in finding and generating ideas for article writing. The connections may not seem obvious, but be flexible. Oh and I never said earlier, but always have a way of jotting down any idea that comes into your head. There?s nothing worse than having a great idea and then not being able to remember it later.

Escaping Election Chaos

Escaping Election Chaos ?a PTR for 31 October ? 3 November at WDW and 3 ? 10 November aboard the Fantasy.

It?s been a few years (we won?t discuss how many) since I attempted a trip report of any kind. I don?t know why I decided to start again, but this little three-day at WDW seems to be tailor made for getting my feet wet. Since we are just a few days from leaving?I better get busy! If I do well, perhaps I can do one on our long trip in May! Anyway, hands and feet must remain in the PTR at all times, stow all loose items and dispense with any liquid beverages?it could get bumpy out here.

Our cast:
NanaTink?.54, Wife, Mom, Mema, family Disney planner. Busy planning trips since 2001. I work as an analyst for the Federal government in downtown DC at the Department of Justice.

Sulley?also 54, Husband, Dad, Papa, Disney enabler. Secret Disney lover, but if asked, it?s all for moi. He works at the Pentagon as a Public Affairs officer. Retired from the Navy in 1998 after 22 years, it took a lot of convincing on my part to get him to cruise.

Our first trip to Disney together was our very first vacation that wasn?t to visit family or connected to a move to a new duty station. Our youngest child had graduated from high school the year before, our oldest in the Navy himself.

I don?t remember who came up with the idea of going to Disney the first time, but I want to say the original idea belonged to Sulley, that he saw an advertisement for Shades of Green and thought it was perfect. As it turned out, SoG was undergoing renovation at the time, so they booked us into POR, Alligator, Bayou, and as they say, the rest was history! Or as I have been known to say, you have nobody to blame but yourself!

Since that first trip, we?ve made an additional 15 trips to the World, traveled to Disneyland 3 times and taken 9 cruises. In addition, we joined the Disney Vacation Club. And remember, this is ALL.MY.FAULT!

That?s us in my signature picture, it?s one of my favorites, taken on the Dream in June last year, which, coincidently this plan had its germination. As always, DCL had its onboard booking offers and we decided that since we both work in DC, and having been through the ?drama? of elections, both having political appointees as bosses, we did not want to be around during the election, either way it goes. Plus, we were excited to sail on the Fantasy as well, so the 3 November cruise jumped out as the perfect one. I booked it.

?Now wait,? you are thinking??this isn?t the cruise trip report area!? Fear not, there is a Disney stay attached?I just wanted to give you the beginning point.

Fast forward to Ocotber and you will find Sulley and I working on planning our January trip to WDW with our youngest son and his family. We were talking about leave plans for the upcoming year, and Sulley said, ?you know, I love taking the kids and the grandkids, but sometimes I just miss wandering around with just you and not having to plan around other people. When can we go just for us?? (Remember how Disney trips are ALL.FOR.ME? )

This Time is Our Time

When we travel for a cruise, we usually take Friday off, and travel down at our leisure and stay at the Hyatt MCO. It?s easy and we are right there for the bus to the port first thing in the morning! No concerns about flight delays. I looked at our point situation and realized we had plenty to add a few days at Disney before the cruise. We could fly down, take the DME to WDW and spend a few days wandering around! Sold, but still have to wait a few days for our 11 month window. I could still plan though!

Now, I know that October 31 is Halloween, and the Magic Kingdom will definitely have MNSSHP that night, and knowing they usually have a party a couple days afterwards, I asked Sulley if he was interested in going to the party again. He declined, saying, I just want to stroll around, do a few rides, take photos, nothing fast-paced as our last few trips have been. I agree, so low key is the plan. I?m reading everything coming out about the Fantasyland expansion and trying to figure out what will, won?t or might be open when we go?hmmmm.

Finally, our 11-month DVC window arrives and I hop online and book a Saratoga Springs one bedroom, arriving on October 31st, checking out November 3. Now many people will wonder why do we waste our points on a one-bedroom for only 3 nights.

There are a few reasons. I often have problems sleeping and get up and wander around. I don?t want to disturb Sulley with my nocturnal wanderings, so a one bedroom allows me to get up and go into another room to read if I want and not worry about keeping him awake. It also has the advantage of having a washer and dryer in the room, allowing me to do our laundry just before the cruise so I do not have to pack EXTRA clothes for the trip. Plus, I have the points, so why not?

I task Sulley with finding our airfare as he is a United Premier Exec frequent flyer which is helpful as our baggage is free and he is complimentary upgraded to Economy Plus, a god-send with his long legs! (Due to the budget crisis, his government travel was curtailed this year, so we will lose this perk next year )

We discussed our park plans, knowing our time is limited. I voice my desire to go to MK our arrival day of 31 October and see what the new Fantasyland has to offer, knowing that the park will close at 7 for non-party attendees, this will allow for a nice dinner following and maybe a trip to DTD. Sulley agrees, and states he of course wants to ride ToT and RnRC, so day 2 looks like DHS, possibly some wandering of Epcot FWF. I point out our time in MK will be limited our first day and I would like to go back and ride some rides and just wander the park. Sulley agrees. So we have a basic plan, now it?s time to think about food. Where should we eat?

Up next; Dining plans?.You want WHAT?

Bill Brownstein: Big Decision helps Montreal's Pak Tek

?

Lenny and Lorne Shereck, the father-son team behind Montreal packaging company Pak Tek, get valuable advice about business and communication on the CBC series The Big Decision. ?We dealt with more between us in three weeks than we had over our entire career together,? Lorne says.

MONTREAL ? The Big Decision is a business TV series unlike any other. Most shows in the genre simply profile companies or entrepreneurs, but this CBC program, airing Tuesdays at 9 p.m., reaches out to businesses struggling to survive.

Hosts Arlene Dickinson and Jim Treliving can relate to the woes of the subjects they interview. They are business execs themselves ? she is CEO of Venture Communications; he is chairman and owner of Boston Pizza. More to the point, they apparently have very deep pockets and can infuse much-needed cash to keep floundering companies afloat ? should the companies meet their investment criteria.

Each episode features two businesses in need of a lifeline. The hosts ? who also appear on the CBC show Dragons? Den ? can decide to invest in one, both or none.

On Tuesday?s episode, the show focuses for the first time on a Montreal company, Pak Tek, a maker of corrugated boxes. Dickinson soon surmises that Pak Tek has issues more pressing than just money. There is major personality conflict at the top, with the owners pitted against one another. Making matters even dicier is that it?s a father/son squabble related to the transfer of management power. Fortunately, father Lenny Shereck and son Lorne can at least agree that their relationship needs as much mending as their books.

(The other company featured in Tuesday?s episode is Esprit, an adventure-travel group in Davidson, Que., that takes groups on hair-raising rides through white-water rapids but is experiencing equal turbulence with its bottom line.)

Dickinson recognizes that Pak Tek?s corrugated boxes aren?t ?sexy,? but having done her homework, she deduces that the boxes are a $50-billion business in North America. Regardless, Pak Tek?s sales have shrunk from $19 million to $9.5 million in recent years, which makes Dickinson wonder what?s really at the root of the company?s problems.

OK, the recession didn?t help. Certainly not after Pak Tek invested more than $3 million in high-tech machinery. Nor does it help that Pak Tek doesn?t have a large sales staff to generate sufficient business. It is also sitting on too much inventory. Plus, for whatever reason, the company?s big marketing tool is its sponsorship of a UFC kick-boxer.

Then there?s the thorny issue of son wanting to take over but dad not thinking he?s ready. Lorne points out that he can?t even cut a $50 cheque without his dad?s approval.

The Sherecks believe many of their problems could be solved with a $350,000 investment from Dickinson. She?s not so sure. She thinks their problem is not money ? it?s them.

Dickinson brings in a management expert to analyze the business. His assessment is not pretty: ?An out-of-control factory in a scene right out of Raiders of the Lost Ark.? He feels that Pak Tek has to dispose of $140,000 of inventory immediately.

But Dickinson thinks an even more radical approach is necessary and sends the Sherecks off to a psychologist specializing in relationship counselling ? albeit mostly marriages.

They come clean with the psychologist. Lorne says he just wants his dad?s trust, and Lenny says he still has concerns about his son?s ability to take over. It?s not a miracle cure, but at least the bonding process is in place.

Actually, Dickinson has the best therapeutic advice for the Sherecks: They both need a good boot to the butt to kick-start their potential corrugated-box gold mine.

Without revealing what transpires, Dickinson does point out to the pair that money isn?t necessarily their salvation and expresses some concern that an outside partner ? like her ? might make things even more messy.

The beauty of the episode ? indeed, of the series ? is that while there is plenty of criticism delivered by the hosts, it is always of a constructive nature. And a lot cheaper than paying for weekly visits to the shrink, or consultations with management experts.

All the same, it takes a certain amount of bravery for a father and son to expose not only their business difficulties but also their relationship issues in public.

?Lorne was really the mastermind in contacting The Big Decision, and initially I wasn?t interested in participating,? Lenny says at the company plant in Saint-Laurent. ?But it has always been my philosophy that people share things and get them off their chests. And if Lorne decided that he wanted to be involved with this business, we had to come to terms.?

Lenny, 62, started his career on the order desk of Pak Tek in 1971 and eventually took over the company. ?There have been some good years here,? he says. ?But the reality is that 73 per cent ? according to the statistics ? of second- and third-generation businesses are failing. So I thought this would be a golden opportunity for Lorne and I to bond and to deal with the reality of operating a business.?

For his part, Lorne, 36, believes the TV experience has been a success. ?Both our minds have been opened by hearing each other out. We dealt with more between us in three weeks than we had over our entire career together. We learned to explore different avenues, different ways of thinking.?

Lenny explains that when Lorne expressed an interest in running Pak Tek three years ago, he wanted to give his son a ?running start? by automating the company. He believes that after The Big Decision they are now on the same page.

?It?s been a process that Lorne and I are working our way through,? Lenny says. ?I can separate church from state, business from family. I look at this as a business that has to be run as a business. And we are now in an excellent position to grow, and Lorne has done an excellent job in getting the company business-ready. Now we just need to enlarge our sales force to move ahead. Honestly, I?m prepared to let go. I have to let go.?

?We?ve never really had a problem agreeing or disagreeing, but a problem agreeing to disagree,? Lorne says. ?We?re working on that the most, seeing things from different angles. But I?ve never wanted my father out of the business. It?s just the opposite. All I want is a lot more involvement in communication between us.?

OK, but what?s with the company sponsoring UFC combatant John (the Bull) Makdessi ? Georges St-Pierre?s kick-boxing partner?

?It is a small investment in the hundreds of dollars, but it seemed to serve as more of a metaphor on the show for my father and I fighting in business,? Lenny suggests.

Better a metaphor than the two battling it out in a kick-boxing octagon. ?Yeah, my dad would kill me,? Lorne ?fesses up. ?I wouldn?t want to mess with old-man power.?

Smart kid. Just may be ready for succession.

The Pak Tek episode of The Big Decision airs Tuesday at 9 p.m. on CBC.

Nursing Courses - Out With The Outdated, And In With The New

We are very grateful to the doctors who diagnose, and prescribe the necessary treatment to their patients. On the other hand, the nurses who stay by the patient's side and provide the required attention tend to be overlooked by a lot of people. They are the ones who are always around, and more often than not, they sacrifice their own needs for their patient's. Other than providing assistance to those who require it, they also make sure to monitor their patient's vital signs frequently and make certain they drink their medicine. These professionals are able to do everything because they have taken the necessary nursing courses.

Making a difference in someone else's life is achievable with this occupation. With the various improvements in modern technology and science, this profession has evolved in more ways than one. This is no longer limited to hospital care. There are a variety of courses available if you are interested. You can select the one that can help you attain your chosen career easily. Find the one that matches your objectives, abilities, and passion.

So that you can begin this career, it is necessary to have a good educational foundation. Due to the fact that the lives of other people will be in your hands, nursing should be considered as serious business. There are licenses required to be eligible for this field. A diploma or certificate from the healthcare facility or school that states that you have undertaken and completed the training provided are needed. Another alternative is to take an associate program which usually lasts for two years. This is preferred by men and women who need to earn money but do not have the time to complete a four-year bachelor's program.

The first two years in a bachelor's program concentrates on the completion of general education subjects, and the last two years of the program are purely dedicated to nursing practice and its theories. A licensure exam is then offered to those who have intentions of becoming a registered nurse in their state. A master's and doctorate degree can be pursued by those who want to specialize in a chosen field. Keep in mind that these options last between four to six years and a lot of dedication is required when pursuing this career.

This career can provide men and women with a lot of chances for professional development and growth. Nurses are no longer viewed as assistants to the doctors. Nowadays these professionals have a lot to offer other than traditional bedside care. These specialists have the care courses to thank for because they are now able to choose their specialty.
