Why Tecmo Koei has the best community of fans - Digitally ...

Of all the gaming communities I?ve seen, both online and off, Tecmo Koei?s fanbase would have to be the most loyal and dedicated to the cause.

These guys and ladies buy every Warriors game (and there are a lot of those); and any anime or gaming convention will have groups of people dressed in cosplay taken from Tecmo Koei?s various franchises (and that of course includes Dead or Alive). It doesn?t matter that the big websites like IGN regularly trash ?their? games because Tecmo Koei fans shrug and get back to having fun.

In fact, it?s difficult to think of another company that has such a vocal, loyal fanbase despite the critical ambivalence to the games. There is a genuine and positive energy amongst the Tecmo Koei fans, and in a world where you?ve got communities of children (who shouldn?t even be playing the games) yelling homophobic slurs on various shooters, and extreme sexism in other communities, this is a refreshing change of pace. The reason that there is such a positive community around the games is very simple ? perhaps more than any other company, Tecmo Koei genuinely cares about its fans.

In fact, Tecmo Koei?s UK-based community manager, Chin Soon Sun, is a fan before an employee. Tecmo Koei took note of his efforts with a popular community website, and recruited him into its corporate ranks. Now he inspires his followers on Twitter and Facebook, and is, in short, a genuine personality (follow up yourself on Twitter: @inspchin).

We were able to sit down and chat with Chin about his great work with the Tecmo Koei community, and indeed why it?s one of the most positive, high-energy communities in the games industry.

Digitally Downloaded (DD): How did you come to be Tecmo Koei's Community Manager, and what does the role involve?
Chin Soon Sun (CS): I was discovered by the Koei team back in 2007 on the fan site I created in 2005 called Koei Warriors. I started to work with Tecmo Koei as a freelancer to develop the official sites for it, and a year after that I had been hired to be a Sales and Marketing assistant to get educated.
Now I'm the Community Manager ? so it all started from a fanboy in a small town in Malaysia, this story is pretty much about a boy's dream has come true. As for my role as a Community Manager, I'm involved fully in the community to grow its fanbase and keep the engagement level as strong as possible; other than that, I also do various design works when the team needs me to.

DD: What do you like about the job?
CS: It's interesting and challenging as I don't know what to expect to happen each day; so exploring solutions and discovering various opportunities around what happens every day has become my biggest focus. Plus, I love traveling and attend to various events, I think this is another reason I love this job.

DD: Tecmo Koei would have to have one of the most engaged, highly loyal fan bases amongst all the publishers. What do you think has led to such a committed group of fans?
CS: It is to say "learn to inspire, not just to admire" to humanise the social network engagement. The social network has been spreading over the years and has become the essential platform for communications.
You see many companies have been involved in this but to build a healthy community, bot languages aren't working too well. For my #TKfamily, the word "family" is there for a reason; it's an accepting community and my main guideline to them has always been "no prejudice, no discrimination, everyone has equal opportunities to be a part of it."

DD: You're obviously very active on both Facebook and Twitter. How have these social networking tools helped to reach out to your community?
CS: Facebook and Twitter have helped me to deliver the information about our games. It?s not just that, though, I also take advantage of the platform to deliver positive message to give the community love, support and encourage them to go through their daily lives; that's what the word "social" is to me.

DD: What are some of the funniest/ most inspirational stories you've heard from your community? CS: The funniest thing is when they turn my tweets into something really creatively dirty; those become an instant retweet and favorite material as it put a great smile on my face. As for the most inspirational story, I believe that in my network, everyone is a ?Fighter for their dreams?. I receive many tweets from my community telling me that they have worked hard and achieved their dreams; this has inspired me to keep going to work on my life to a better level.

DD: While Tecmo Koei is big in Japan, it's a niche publisher in the West. What kind of challenges have you faced with growing the community as a result?
CS: The main challenge to develop a strong community for a niche publisher is that I can't just talk about our games, but I need to get myself involved in many events to meet more people, to get educated and learn from them. But then, it has always been the quality (not quantity) that matters to me the most.

DD: Almost any game/ anime convention has people in Tecmo Koei character cosplay. Do you think it's TK's characters that have helped build such a dedicated fan base? What do you think is so appealing about the characters?
CS: London MCM Expo is where it all started; I used to be one of the cosplayers too. Although our games 'may' not look very appealing in the Western market, our character design has always been at the top of people?s list of favourites as they're carefully designed. I believe this is one of the reasons why cosplayers love our game characters a lot.

DD: Which games are you yourself playing at the moment?
CS: Dead or Alive 5 on console, Kumo Lumo on my iPhone.

DD: Finally, anything to shout out to your Australian fans?
CS: I hope to visit Australia one day to meet my Aussies - you guys have always been so cool and relaxed. I believe this is one of the destinations I would like myself to be heading next. Thank you for the connection and keep in touch, MATE (;))

Tony Scott Death Officially Ruled a Suicide | Gather

A lot of fans of the famed director, Tony Scott, were holding out hope there was something behind his leap to death off a Los Angeles bridge. Unfortunately, it appears his death was just what it originally seemed -- a suicide.

According to the coroner's report, the director died of multiple blunt force traumas consistent with those he would have received by jumping into the harbour. There was no evidence of other medical problems, despite rumors circulating that Scott was dying from terminal brain cancer.

Scott did have drugs in his system. They included Remeron, an anti-depressant, and Lunesta, a sleep agent. It seems doubtful, however, that they had anything to do with Scott taking his life.

Early reports by eye witnesses claimed that Scott purposefully jumped from the bridge, leading everyone to believe the suicide theory. That seemed further validated by notes that Tony left in his car as well as at his home. What isn't known, however, is what directly triggered the action. That was not addressed in the so-called "suicide notes".

Some claim the highly creative genius probably straddled a line between sanity and insanity for many years. However, there is little evidence to back up such radical thoughts. By all accounts, although sometimes suffering from depression, he showed little signs of being suicidal.

Ultimately, it matters not how Tony Scott died. It only matters that he'll be missed by those who loved him; his family and friends and, of course, brother Ridley Scott. Tony's fans will miss him too!

Looking for a Publisher? Consider the Small Press Option ...

The road to publication?is well-traveled,?rife with potholes and detours, and yet the journey is different for every author.?

Today, I?m happy to introduce?debut author, Susan Boyer. Susan?talks about?her publishing journey and reveals?why she chose a small press.?Susan is also giving away a copy of her book,?LOWCOUNTRY BOIL, to one lucky commenter!

Welcome to the RU, Susan!

The first thing I need to tell you is that my knowledge of publishing is limited to my own experience, and I don?t have much. But I will happily share that experience in hopes that it?s of help to someone.?

In February of this year, I was a very frustrated writer. I?d played by all the rules. I polished my manuscript until my characters begged me to leave them alone. I?d queried agents?forty-nine of them to be exact?until I found one who loved my manuscript enough to offer me representation. My agent was on a second round of submissions. ?The rejections were virtually all a mix of ?not right for our list,? ?love a, b, and c about this project, but we don?t have a place for it in our list at this time,? and ?I?m just not passionate enough about this project to make it a must-have for our list.? It was all about their lists. This was not something I could fix.?

I spent a lot of time mulling over my situation. I remembered the day I first saw Darci Chan?s self-published novel, The Mill River Recluse, on the USA Today bestseller list. According to a Wall Street Journal article, the book, priced at 99 cents, had earned $130,000 as of December, 2011. The Mill River Recluse had not fit a publisher?s list, either.

I weighed the pros and cons of self/independent publishing. My self-published friends spoke of the freedom they enjoyed and this aspect appealed to me.?I confess, I?m a bit rebellious, and the notion of writing with the goal of fitting neatly into someone?s list chafed. And the alternative, continuing to write what I wanted in the hopes that somewhere down the line it would fit someone?s list seemed foolish. It was like trying to hit the bulls-eye on one of several moving targets.

My agent still had a few submissions outstanding when I left for Sleuthfest in early March. While there, I spoke to two editors who wanted to see the full manuscript, and followed up with another who was considering it. These were reputable, mid-sized, independent publishers.

One only accepted exclusive submissions, so I?d have to have my agent pull the outstanding submissions before he could submit to them. Another had a list so full they were looking at eighteen months after signing a contract to publication. The third also had an eighteen-month time frame, but had the additional not-right-for-me policy of not considering a second book until six months into the royalty period on the first book. This meant there would likely be two years between books.?

I came home from Sleuthfest with a clear vision of the three things most important to me.?

  1. I wanted to get my first novel into the hands of readers sooner rather than later.
  2. I wanted the second and subsequent novels out in roughly six-month intervals so that I could build an audience for my work.
  3. I wanted to be in print, but I wanted simultaneous e-book publication at a price-point that would be attractive to readers who preferred that format.?

I also knew at this point that, while some aspects of independent publishing were very attractive to me, I could not manage all the technical aspects myself without taking my eye off the ball relative to the two things I had to focus on: writing strong stories and publicity.?

Knowing what I wanted gave me clarity. The best fit for me was a small press. Generally speaking, small presses are more nimble than their larger counterparts. Larissa Reinhart wrote a post on small presses in August that outlines all the things one should consider in looking at small presses, as they are not all created equal.

Because the founder of Henery Press was a fellow member of Sisters in Crime, I knew a bit about her?that she was a successful entrepreneur in another business. She?d also been doing freelance covers and editing for a while. She had savvy business sense and a skill set that made this new press seem viable. And their niche was mysteries and romance, which are the genres I write.?

I think Stephanie Laurens?s keynote address at the RWA National Convention holds a lot of truth. If you weren?t there and haven?t read it, here?s a link: http://www.stephanielaurens.com/rwa12keynote.html. To briefly restate what I took away from her speech, authors have more choices than ever before. While not very long ago there was only one route from author to reader, now there are several viable routes. An author need only decide which one is the best fit for her.

For me, that was the key?figuring out which path best fit my goals. I could not be happier with the results. I signed my contract in late March. My debut novel, Lowcountry Boil, was published September 18th. At every step of the process, Henery Press has exceeded my expectations.

The next book in the series will be out in early May, and could have been out earlier but for my own failure to accurately estimate how much time would be invested in certain aspects of publicity.

We learn as we go.

Thanks so much for your time!?

***

What three things relative to publication are most important to you? Is the prestige of publishing with a Big Six (or Seven) house worth whatever it takes? How have the recent (and ongoing) industry changes impacted your goals?

Private Investigator Liz Talbot is a modern Southern belle: she blesses hearts and takes names. She carries her Sig 9 in her Kate Spade handbag, and her golden retriever, Rhett, rides shotgun in her hybrid Escape.

When her grandmother is murdered, Liz high-tails it back to her South Carolina island home to find the killer. She?s fit to be tied when her police-chief brother shuts her out of the investigation, so she opens her own. Then her long-dead best friend pops in and things really get complicated.

When more folks start turning up dead in this small seaside town, Liz must use more than just her wits and charm to keep her family safe, chase down clues from the hereafter, and catch a psychopath before he catches her.

For a chance to?win a copy of Susan?s book (print or e-book format),?leave a comment!??? ?

On Friday, October 26th, Trish Milburn presents: Setting as Character.

KINGSTON, Jamaica (AP) ? Jamaicans hunkered down at home as the front edge of Tropical Storm Sandy buffeted the Caribbean island with pelting rain and howling winds early Wednesday before possibly crossing the country as a hurricane.

The island's international airports prepared to close, cruise ships changed their itineraries and police ordered 48-hour curfews in major towns to keep people off the streets and deter looting as the late-season storm was expected to rake Jamaica from south to north at midday.

The 18th named storm of the Atlantic hurricane season was forecast to pass over or near Jamaica and then spin on into eastern Cuba by Wednesday evening. It was expected to pass west of the U.S. naval base at Guantanamo Bay, where pretrial hearings are being held for a suspect in the deadly 2000 attack on the destroyer USS Cole off Yemen.

Across Jamaica, poor people in ramshackle shantytowns and moneyed residents in gated communities were jittery about Sandy's approach. Many sections of the debt-shackled country have crumbling infrastructure, and a lack of building codes has resulted in some middle-class homes and tin-roofed shacks being built close to steep embankments and gullies.

Dangerous flash floods and mudslides set off by Sandy were a threat for the island of roughly 2.7 million inhabitants, Jamaica's meteorological service said.

In the hilly community of Kintyre, near the capital of Kingston, Sharon Gayle and a few of her drenched neighbors expected to lose the town's bridge over the Hope River, which washed away a section of the span just three weeks ago during a heavy downpour.

"We've gotten cut off here a whole heap of times. But with a big nasty hurricane on the way, I'm really nervous. We're trying not to show it in front of the children though," the mother of three said, huddling under a sopping white towel as she stared at the rising river.

The storm was predicted to drop as much as 10 inches (25 centimeters) of rain, especially over central and eastern parts of Jamaica, the country's meteorological service said. Some isolated spots could see as much as 20 inches (50 centimeters), according to U.S. forecasters. Battering waves and a strong storm surge were also forecast.

Kingston's airport was set to close at 7 a.m. EDT (1100 GMT) Wednesday, and Montego Bay's airport planned to shutter at 9 a.m. EDT (1300 GMT). Royal Caribbean Cruises Ltd. announced that its Allure of the Seas megaship would not stop at Jamaica's northern Falmouth terminal on Wednesday and instead remain at sea.

Across the country, curfews were imposed in rough slums and business centers, including the New Kingston financial district and the resort town of Montego Bay.

To deter looters and other criminals, Deputy Police Commissioner Glenmore Hinds warned that police "will react swiftly to protect life and property." Outside its placid tourist resorts, the island has long struggled with high crime and gang violence.

In Cuba, authorities issued a hurricane watch for several provinces and there were intermittent rains over Haiti, where a tropical storm warning was in effect. A tropical storm watch was also posted for parts of the Bahamas, where the storm was predicted to pass on Thursday.

Although Florida was not expected to receive any direct impact from Sandy, Brian Koon, director of the U.S. state's emergency management division, said residents should remain aware of the storm and take precautions to keep themselves safe from indirect impacts including rip currents.

Early Wednesday, Sandy had maximum sustained winds of 65 mph (105 kph) and was centered 160 miles (260 kilometers) south of Kingston. It was moving north-northeast at 10 mph (17 kph).

Meanwhile, U.S. forecasters said Tropical Storm Tony had formed over the open Atlantic, but posed no threat to land. The storm had maximum sustained winds of about 40 mph (65 kph) and it was moving northeast at 12 mph (19 kph). Its center was 1,505 miles (2,425 kilometers) west-southwest of the Azores.

PFT: Cowboys may lose Lee for season

Pittsburgh Steelers v Cincinnati BengalsGetty Images

Steelers receiver Emmanuel Sanders gave the rest of the NFL a clear lesson in how to save a timeout by employing poor sportsmanship on Sunday night, faking an injury to give his team time to get the right personnel on the field.

With the Steelers facing third-and-11 with six minutes left in the game, Pittsburgh wanted to substitute but didn?t have time to do it without picking up a delay of game penalty. So Sanders ? one of the players who was supposed to come off ? simply fell to the ground pretending to be hurt, which caused a clock stoppage that allowed the Steelers to get the correct personnel on the field.

It was incredibly obvious that Sanders was faking, but it became ridiculously obvious when Sanders went right back on the field just one play later. NBC?s Cris Collinsworth and Al Michaels both noticed that Sanders was faking immediately, and Michaels noted that the league office might have something to say about it.

Based on what the league office has said in the past, Sanders should have to explain himself. Last season, when two Giants players obviously faked an injury in a game against the Rams, the NFL distributed a memo saying, in part, ?all those suspected of being involved in faking injuries will be summoned promptly to this office.?

Well, now Sanders is suspected of being involved in faking injuries. But NFL spokesman Greg Aiello told PFT that Sanders wasn?t summoned to the league office, or disciplined in any other way. However, the situation is still being reviewed by the league office.

As I wrote at the time of the Giants? fake injury controversy, faking injuries is a time-honored practice in football. It dates at least to 1953, when a Notre Dame team was dubbed the ?Fainting Irish? after faking an injury to get a free timeout that set up a tying touchdown on the last play of a game against Iowa. But the fact that fake injuries have been around for more than half a century doesn?t make them acceptable. And since the NFL has warned teams not to do it, there?s no reason for the NFL not to act now that Sanders has obviously done it.

It would stink to see the NFL become like soccer, where players are constantly flopping to the turf with phony injuries. But if the NFL doesn?t crack down, things could head in that direction. The example that Sanders set on Sunday night is clear: If you want a free timeout, just fake an injury. The referee and the league office won?t do anything about it.
