Repopulation of countryside is essential tool to avoid major fires, Spanish experts say

ScienceDaily (Oct. 28, 2012) ? The Universitat de Val?ncia presented a preliminary report on the major fires Valencia suffered this summer. The report, lead by the professor of physical geography Alejandro P?rez Cueva, suggests that repopulation of the countryside is an essential tool to avoid major forest fires, and points out alternative solutions such as biological firewalls that involve developing pastures.

The document was presented during the celebration of the 1st Forum of Forest Fires Universitat de Val?ncia-Ayuntamientos, which is an encounter between the academic institution and the town councils to discuss the forest fires that took place last summer. It was held at the Botanic Gardens and its goal was to detect 'the needs of the towns affected by the fires and promote the relations between the local authorities and the University experts', as the Vice-Principal stated.

The experts analyzed this summer's major fires -Benag?ber, La Safor, Cortes, Andilla and Chulilla-, which destroyed a total of 63.520 hectares. 'We are studying the basic elements of the disasters like the use of the land and the weather conditions, but also the impact of the fires on biodiversity', said P?rez Cueva. For example, the Andilla and Cortes fires affected valuable areas including the Sierra Calderona nature reserve, Mart?s, El Ave, and Malacara ranges, La Mola de Cortes and El Caroig, or the central stretch of the river Palancia; four micro flora reserves; three fauna reserves in Alcublas and two caves used by bats.

This report also analyzes socio-economic and demographic issues. 'We can see once again that population decline in rural areas has favoured major fires', adds the professor. The municipal areas that have suffered the most are Dos Aguas (94,9%), Macastre (77,3%), Saca?et (67,45%), Alcublas (66,6%), Bugarra (66,2%), Teresa (59,38%), Catadau (49,2%), Llocnou de Sant Jeroni (42,11%), and Chulilla (38,36%).

'Our work proves that conventional firewalls and natural barriers have not worked, so it is urgent to implement biological firewalls, something which is already included in the regional forest planning regulation. This involves recovering traditional activities such as pastures or farming activities', P?rez Cueva said. He also pointed out the importance of avoiding the use of heavy machinery on burned land to avoid erosion.

Regarding the influence of the weather, scientists analyzed the disasters and found that the wind caused the fire to behave in three different ways. In the first of the fires, Benag?ber (440 hectares), flames were caused by a cold breeze that stopped at nightime. In the second one however, La Safor area (1.329 hectares), there was a central focus and variable East and West winds whereas the three last major fires in Cortes (32.443 hectares), Andilla (21.249 hectares) and Chulilla (8.057 hectares), were characterized by the classic and very persistent South-East wind.

The towns' mayors claimed for a political will to implement effective measures of recovery. Manuel Civera from Alcublas stressed the economic value of the natural and environmental resources as well as the food products that are provided by these inland towns. He also added that despite all the regional, national and European regulations depopulation has not been avoided, so there must be a real political effort to change the situation.

The representative of the town council of Enguera, Santiago Ar?valo, stated that 'there will be no society without a cohesion between the coastal zones and inland areas.' He also stressed the need to start new economic activities such as the use of forest biomass to produce energy.

Cooking Christmas Dinner

Christmas dinner is the highlight of the Yuletide season. It is a chance for you to get together with loved ones; it is also a good excuse to deviate from your usual healthy diet.

But if you are like most people, you worry about how to survive Christmas dinner preparation every season. It doesn?t have to be rocket science, though. Simplify your life by following these tips:

Before Christmas dinner

You should start thinking about your Christmas dinner plans at least a couple of weeks prior to the date. Sit down with your family and make a tentative dinner menu. This way, you?ll know what kind of food your family prefers for that special night.

Make a list of all the ingredients and supplies you will need for the dinner. Include not only food and drinks but also items for the table setting and the decorations for the dining area.

If you are planning to order any items, such as ham or cake, better reserve it a few days early to avoid the last-minute rush.

A potluck is always a great idea because it saves you cooking time and effort (and cash). Just make sure you discuss the menu thoroughly with family members and guests so as not to have double-ups.

While turkey and goose have traditionally graced the Christmas dinner table, you may also consider other alternatives, especially if you?ve been serving the same fare year after year.

How about glazed ham with pineapple and cherries? Roast beef and lamb are also good alternatives for smaller groups. For a healthier meal, try putting up a salad bar or a cook-your-own-barbecue hibachi grill.

During dinner

Place food items in strategic positions on the table, preferably grouping them according to food type ? appetizers, main courses, sidings, and desserts. Use a buffet style to save on space.

If the table is long, consider placing two of the same dishes at opposite ends for the convenience of the guests. Keep ice, wine, and other beverages in a large chiller bin, which should be positioned within easy reach.

Designate a small table to contain all the utensils ? napkins, forks, knives, cups, straws, and condiments. You can inform your guests about the setup so that they don?t have to keep asking you.

Disposable plates and utensils are ideal, to minimize after-dinner cleanups, leaving you with more quality time to spend with your guests.

Make sure you have a large trash bag or bin where guests can throw out used paper cups and plates.

After dinner

Washing the dishes can be fast and fun if you get your family to help, by packaging the chore as another chance to spend quality time together as a family during the holidays. If you don?t have a dishwasher, assign different people to clear up and pre-rinse the flatware, soap, rinse, dry, and store.

Got stains on your tablecloth? Just rub the area with a mixture of dishwashing detergent and water, or lemon juice and warm water, to remove the stain.

Any food droppings on the carpet can be removed by hand. As soon as possible (probably the next day), rub the area with a solution of dishwashing detergent and warm water, rinse out, and blot dry.

For stubborn stains, use a mixture of ammonia and warm water (for regular carpets only). Scrub till the stain is removed, then rinse and blot dry. With the right help and know-how, post-Christmas house cleaning can be easy ? maybe even easier than the holiday itself.

Suicide bomber kills 8, wounds 100 in Nigerian church

KADUNA, Nigeria (Reuters) - A suicide bomber drove a jeep full of explosives into a Catholic church during morning mass in northern Nigeria on Sunday, killing at least eight people, wounding more than 100 and triggering reprisal attacks that killed at least two more.

There was no claim of responsibility but Islamist sect Boko Haram has bombed several churches in the past in its fight to create an Islamic state in Nigeria where the 160 million population is evenly split between Christians and Muslims.

The bomber drove the car into the wall of the packed St Rita's church in the Malali area of Kaduna, a volatile ethnically and religiously mixed city, witnesses said.

A wall of the church was blasted open and scorched black, with debris lying around.

"The heavy explosion also damaged so many buildings around the area," said survivor Linus Lighthouse.

A spokesman for the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) Yushua Shuaib said eight people had been confirmed killed and more than 100 wounded.

Church attacks often target Nigeria's middle belt, where its largely Christian south and mostly Muslim north meet and where sectarian tensions run high. Kaduna's mixed population lies along that faultline.

REPRISALS

Shortly after the blast, angry Christian youths took to the streets armed with sticks and knives. A Reuters reporter saw two bodies at the roadside lying in pools of blood.

"We killed them and we'll do more," shouted a youth, with blood on his shirt, before police chased him and others away. Police set up roadblocks and patrols across the town in an effort to prevent the violence spreading.

Police spokesman Aminu Lawal said later the situation was calm. "All the areas prone to reprisal attacks are under control and getting back to normal," he said by telephone.

At least 2,800 people have died in fighting since Boko Haram's insurrection began in 2009, according to Human Rights Watch. Most were Muslims in the northeast of the country, where the sect usually attacks politicians and security forces.

Another witness to the bombing, Daniel Kazah, a member of the Catholic cadets at the church, said he had seen three bodies on the bloodied church floor in the aftermath.

In previous such attacks, bombers have usually failed to enter church buildings and detonated their explosives at entrances or in car parks.

A spokesman for St Gerard's Catholic hospital, Sunday John, said the hospital was treating 14 wounded. Another hospital, Garkura, had at least 84 victims, a NEMA official said.

Many residents of Kaduna rushed indoors, fearing a resurgence of the sectarian killing that has periodically blighted the city.

A bomb attack in a church in Kaduna state in June triggered a week of tit-for-tat violence that killed at least 90 people.

Early Behavioral Intervention Helps Lessen Autism Symptoms ...

By Traci Pedersen Associate News Editor
Reviewed by John M. Grohol, Psy.D. on October 27, 2012

Early Behavioral Intervention Helps Lessen Autism SymptomsIn children with very mild cases of autism, certain learning techniques may result in brain changes that make them ?indistinguishable? from unaffected children of the same age ? essentially normalizing them, according to Geraldine Dawson, Ph.D., in the department of psychiatry at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

The new study, published in the Journal of the American Academy of Child & Adolescent Psychiatry, used the Early Start Denver Model (ESDM). ESDM is a behavioral intervention program that involves intensive engagement with children diagnosed with autism spectrum disorders (ASD).

In this program, specially trained counselors work with children twice a day in two-hour sessions, five days a week.

In 2009, Dawson?s group conducted similar work that showed that children with autism who enrolled in this course at 18 months and participated for about two years had an average IQ score improvement of 17.6 points.?

The children also made significant gains in adapting typical developmental behaviors, such as brushing their teeth and engaging with family members during meals.

Dawson and her team wanted to know what was driving the change. Could alterations in the brains of the Denver Model toddlers be responsible?

It is already well-known that the brain is remarkably plastic during the first six years of life ? meaning it can be molded and shaped based on the growing child?s experiences.

For the study, the researchers enrolled a group of 48 toddlers aged 18 months to nearly 3 years old who had been diagnosed with ASD. Half were randomly assigned to receive the Denver intervention, while the other half were assigned to traditional community intervention programs including some special-education programs at schools.

After about two years, the researchers took electroencephalography (EEG) readings of the electrical activity of all the children?s brains while they were looking at pictures of human faces or toys, and compared the results to those of similarly aged children without autism.

Previous studies have shown that a child?s brain with autism is more highly activated when the child looks at an inanimate object like a toy, and less activated when looking at a human face.

In the current study, however, the Denver program children showed the opposite effect; their brains lit up more when looking at a woman?s face than when viewing a toy.

?We essentially reversed the pattern so kids with autism are now showing greater normal brain activity when they saw a woman?s face and less activity when looking at objects,? said Dawson.

?In fact, the brain activity patterns of kids with autism who received ESDM were no different than a typical four-year-old?s [pattern] when viewing a woman?s face. They were indistinguishable.?

Dawson notes that the intervention does not cure autism, but that these results suggest that some early drivers of ASD may be manipulated and even redirected toward more normal development.

?By providing intervention early on, we can mitigate the severity of autism symptoms and perhaps really alter the trajectory of the disease at both the level of behavior and the brain,? she said.

About 1,000 people have been trained in the technique so far, with 15 specifically trained to teach the Early Start Denver Model to others.

Dawson said the results are encouraging for not just newly diagnosed toddlers with autism but also those who have been living with the disorder for years.

?Although it?s optimal to start as early as possible,? she said, ?I don?t believe there is any point where the door is shut and the intervention is not helpful.?

Ancestral Discoveries: Genealogy Served on a Silver Platter

Ever wonder what it would feel like to just be handed all the information on your family?? You know, kind of like what happened on episodes of Who Do You Think You Are? and Finding Your Roots:? family trees, death certificates, photographs, military discharge papers, what have you.? But that never really happens, right?
Meet my friend Carol.

Over the years it has become a running joke between us.? Every so often, a family member contacts her and says, "Oh, I'd like to send you a copy of all the research I've done."? Then she receives another well put together and well documented part of her family tree, often with supporting materials.? She already has several copies of different trees and boxes of original letters and documents from both sides of her family.

She was just given another bonanza.

She received two large envelopes full of documents and a USPS Medium Flat Rate box of photo albums and loose photos.? Most of the photos are even labeled!

Among the documents are:
? eight family trees for various lines
? a typed transcript of her great-uncle interviewing her great-grandmother, including the story of how her family was instrumental in the founding of a town in Iowa
? two copies of a treatise on one of her family names
? two copies of a book about the church her ancestor established in the 1600's
? a photo of her grandfather's high school graduating class from 1917
? her grandfather's entire probate file, including correspondence

? original documents from when a relative legally changed his name
? her grandmother's college diploma and teaching certificate
? an original copy of her grandmother's death certificate from Spain (which probably would have been difficult to replace)
? original U.S. Army discharge papers
? a "whole pile" of family letters
? newspaper clippings
? church bulletins
? visitor books from funeral services

Carol's aunt (her mother's sister) collected all of this information.? She has moved to assisted living, and the aunt's daughter had to clean out the home.? This cousin talked with her brothers and her own children, but no one wanted all of the genealogical stuff.? Rather than just throw everything out, she asked around the family to find someone who did want it (hooray!).? Carol got all of this because, unlike her friend, when these items needed a home, she recognized their value.

Of course, now everything needs to be taken care of -- sorted out, put in archival boxes, separated with nonreactive paper.? And some of this is duplicates of what she already has.? But I know that Carol is up to the task.? Now if she were only more interested in genealogy ....

What was that?? No, of course I'm not jealous.? Whatever made you think so?
