Rory McIlroy is officially a free agent when it comes to golf equipment.

McIlroy and Acushnet Co., which has supplied the 23-year-old star from Northern Ireland with Titleist and FootJoy gear since he turned pro five years ago, said Tuesday they will not extend their relationship after this year.

The announcement allows McIlroy to pursue a lucrative endorsement contract, with strong indications that he will sign with Nike in a deal that one industry observer estimated at $20 million a year. That would give Nike golf's two biggest stars in McIlroy and Tiger Woods, who has been with the swoosh since he turned pro in 1996.

McIlroy has established himself as the No. 1 player in the world this year, when he won four times and captured the PGA Championship at Kiawah, giving him eight-shot wins in two major championships. He won the PGA Tour money title, and is closing in on winning the European Tour money title.

This is the second time in the last 10 years that Acushnet, which has a history of fiscal prudence, has not stood in the way of a No. 1 player going after big money. Woods, who had an equipment deal with Titleist when he turned pro, left for the Nike golf ball in 2000 and then the Nike golf clubs in 2002.

Phil Mickelson won his first Masters with Titleist in 2004, and the Fairhaven, Mass., company let him out of his contract later that summer to sign a lucrative deal with Callaway.

"Our goal has been to provide Rory with the best equipment and service that would help him be the best player he could possibly be," Acushnet chief executive Wally Uihlein said in a statement. "He has been a great ambassador for the Titleist and FootJoy brands, and in turn, we are proud of how our equipment has contributed to his success. We wish Rory all the best, both personally and professionally, going forward."

McIlroy, who defeated Woods in an 18-hole exhibition in China on Monday, thanked the Acushnet staff for "five very exciting and successful years."

"I will always appreciate the contribution Titleist has made in helping me become the player I am today," McIlroy said.

Not since Woods has a player had this much potential at such a young age. McIlroy was 19 when he won the Dubai Desert Classic for his first win as a pro, and he followed that with a 62 in the final round to win at Quail Hollow for his first PGA Tour win.

McIlroy shattered U.S. Open scoring records last summer at Congressional to win by eight shots, and when he won his second major at Kiawah Island in August, he became the youngest player since Seve Ballesteros in 1980 with two majors. Only five players have won majors by at least eight shots since 1976 ? three by Woods, two by McIlroy.

They have become friends in recent months. They were in the same group five times during the FedEx Cup playoffs, and the conversation came easily. That led to the 18-hole exhibition on Monday, the first time Woods has agreed to a head-to-head match since the old "Battle at Bighorn" days against Sergio Garcia.

McIlroy won by one. Walking off the fourth hole, McIlroy even took one of Woods' Nike clubs and took a few practice swings.

Now, it appears likely both will be using the same equipment next year.

"We are declining comment on rumors and speculation," Nike spokeswoman Beth Gast said.

McIlroy is not playing the HSBC Champions this week in China. He will close out his European Tour season starting the following week with the Singapore Open, the Hong Kong Open and the DP World Tour Championship in Dubai. He would have two months until his next tournament in Abu Dhabi, giving him time to test new equipment.

McIlroy has gone through a series of changes since winning his first major last summer at Congressional. He left agent Chubby Chandler a year ago and signed with Conor Ridge of Irish-based Horizon Sports Management. He took up membership on the PGA Tour, where he is a lock to be voted player of the year. Changing the very tools he uses will be the biggest change of all.

Still to be determined is how any deal with Nike would affect the rest of McIlroy's deals. He has endorsements with Jumeirah Estates, Oakley, Audemares Piguet and Santander bank. Nike typically prefers a clean look for its athletes, with rare exception. Woods and Anthony Kim had separate endorsements for their golf bags.

Even as McIlroy was getting courted by other companies, Titleist did not put up a big fight. The company has a history of putting the brand before the player, as it did with Woods, Mickelson, David Duval after he reached No. 1 in the world and Sergio Garcia.

It prides itself on having the most tour players use its golf ball, though it also has some 80 players around the world under contract to use its golf balls and golf clubs. This year might have been particularly costly, however, especially with incentive clauses in the contracts. It had six players from the top 16 in the world as full staff players ? McIlroy, Adam Scott, U.S. Open champion Webb Simpson, Jason Dufner, Steve Stricker and Nick Watney.

Novel genes that may drive rare, aggressive form of uterine cancer identified

ScienceDaily (Oct. 28, 2012) ? Researchers have identified several genes that are linked to one of the most lethal forms of uterine cancer, serous endometrial cancer. The researchers describe how three of the genes found in the study are frequently altered in the disease, suggesting that the genes drive the development of tumors. The findings appear in the Oct. 28, 2012, advance online issue of Nature Genetics. The team was led by researchers from the National Human Genome Research Institute (NHGRI), part of the National Institutes of Health.

Cancer of the uterine lining, or endometrium, is the most commonly diagnosed gynecological malignancy in the United States. Also called endometrial cancer, it is diagnosed in about 47,000 American women and leads to about 8,000 deaths each year.

Each of its three major subtypes -- endometrioid, serous and clear-cell -- is caused by a different constellation of genetic alterations and has a different prognosis. Endometrioid tumors make up about 80 percent of diagnosed tumors. Surgery often is a complete cure for women with the endometrioid subtype, since doctors usually diagnose these cases at an early stage.

Compared to other subtypes, the 2 to 10 percent of uterine cancers that comprise the serous subtype do not respond well to therapies. The five-year survival rate for serous endometrial cancer is 45 percent, compared to 65 percent for clear-cell and 91 percent for endometrioid subtypes. Serous and clear-cell endometrial tumor subtypes are clinically aggressive and quickly advance beyond the uterus.

"Serous endometrial tumors can account for as much as 39 percent of deaths from endometrial cancer," said Daphne W. Bell, Ph.D., an NHGRI investigator and the paper's senior author. Dr. Bell heads the Reproductive Cancer Genetics Section of NHGRI's Cancer Genetics Branch.

To determine which genes are altered in serous endometrial cancer, Dr. Bell and her team undertook a comprehensive genomic study of tumors by sequencing their exomes, the critical 1 to 2 percent of the genome that codes for proteins.

"Exome sequencing is a powerful tool for revealing important insights about this form of cancer that exacts such a high toll for thousands of women," said NHGRI Scientific Director Dan Kastner, M.D., Ph.D. "This study pinpoints genetic alterations that may be essential for onset and progression of uterine cancers and may eventually lead to new therapeutic targets."

Dr. Bell's team focused on the rarer, more aggressive forms of endometrial cancer. They began their study by examining serous tumor tissue and matched normal tissue from 13 patients. National Cancer Institute and Massachusetts General Hospital pathologists processed the 26 tissue samples, which subsequently underwent whole-exome sequencing at the NIH Intramural Sequencing Center.

With the exome data in hand, the researchers filtered through millions of data points to locate alterations, or mutations. They disqualified from the analysis any mutation found in a tumor and its matched healthy tissue, looking expressly for mutations that occurred exclusively in the tumor cells. They also eliminated one of the 13 tumors from analysis because its exome had hundreds more unique mutations than any other tumor.

The researchers detected more than 500 somatic mutations within the remaining 12 tumors. They next looked for genes that were mutated in more than one of the tumors. An alteration that occurs in more than one tumor is more likely to be relevant to the development of the cancer than a unique alteration.

"When you identify a set of mutations, they could either be drivers that have caused the cancer or incidental passengers that are of no consequence; our goal is to identify the drivers," Dr. Bell explained. "One way to do this is to home in on genes that are mutated in more than one tumor, because we know from experience that frequently mutated genes are often driver genes."

The team felt confident that alterations in nine genes could be driver genes in serous endometrial cancer. Three of the nine genes had previously been recognized by researchers in the cancer genetics field as a cause of serous endometrial cancer. To get a clearer picture of driver gene status among the other six genes, the researchers sequenced each gene in 40 additional serous endometrial tumors. They discovered that three of the six genes -- CHD4, FBXW7 and SPOP -- are altered at a statistically high frequency in serous endometrial cancer.

The team also found that this set of three genes is mutated in 40 percent of the serous endometrial cancer tumors and in 15 to 26 percent of the other endometrial cancer subtypes.

Probing still further, the researchers looked for the same genes highlighted by their exome sequencing study within databases that organize genes according to their biological function. They found an enrichment of genes involved in chromatin remodeling, the dynamic process by which the contents of the cell nucleus, including DNA, are packaged and modified. Chromatin remodeling enables tightly packaged DNA to be accessed for the expression of genes. Intriguingly, CHD4 was one of the genes that formed the chromatin-remodeling cluster.

"We sequenced the other genes that make up this cluster and, as a set, these genes are frequently mutated in both serous and clear-cell endometrial tumors," said Dr. Bell.

They also noted frequent mutations in genes that regulate a process known as ubiquitin-mediated protein degradation. The process targets unneeded proteins for destruction, and thus prevents them from accumulating within the cell. Left to accumulate, some of the target proteins are known to drive cancer formation. FBXW7 and SPOP are both known to play a role in binding to the unneeded proteins and targeting them for destruction.

Many of the FBXW7 gene mutations that Dr. Bell's team identified are known in other cancers to be driver mutations that prevent the FBXW7 protein from binding to its target protein. Dr. Bell believes that altered SPOP may behave the same way. "All the mutations we found in SPOP are in the region that binds the target proteins" she said. "We suspect the mutations in SPOP might lead to the accumulation of the unneeded proteins within the cell. But that has to be tested."

The current findings build on the team's 2011 study that showed for the first time that alterations in the PIK3R1 gene occur in all subtypes of endometrial cancer and are most frequent in the more common endometrioid subtype.

"This discovery really changes our understanding of some of the genetic alterations that may contribute to this disease," Dr. Bell said, acknowledging that the findings are limited by the small number of tumors subjected to exome sequencing.

She noted that it is too early to make a direct connection between their findings and prospects for treatments for this aggressive form of uterine cancer.

Texting while driving? The ticket costs more than you think.

It's illegal to text and drive in most states, and law enforcement agencies are developing more sophisticated ways to spot offenders. What's more, that ticket may end up costing you hundreds.?

By Richard Read,?Guest blogger / October 28, 2012

In this 2011 file photo, a phone is held in a car in Brunswick, Maine. The Department of Transportation recently announced pilot programs in Connecticut and Massachusetts "to develop and train police officers on better methods for spotting drivers who are texting.

The problem for police?officers?is that such laws can be difficult to enforce. Even though texting constitutes a primary offense in most instances (meaning that drivers can be pulled over solely for breaking that law), officers have to witness a motorist in the act of texting. That means that in the 29 states where it's okay for drivers to use a handheld cell phone, officers have to observe a driver interacting with a device long enough to ensure that they're not fiddling with music or doing something else that might be considered legal.

The Department of Transportation recently announced pilot programs in Connecticut and Massachusetts "to develop and train police officers on better methods for spotting drivers who are texting, and to develop media techniques that alert the public to the perils of texting and driving". Although Secretary of Transportation Ray LaHood admits that "there is still much work to be done" in the area of enforcement, programs like this should soon give officers new tools to catch offenders.

Which is to be expected. Distracted driving is a huge problem in the U.S. and elsewhere, and as smartphones and in-dash?navigation?screens become ubiquitous, the problem's only going to get worse. In fact, perfectly sensible people text and drive -- including?nearly one-third of your commuting colleagues.?

So, given that texting is a growing problem and enforcement is ramping up, it's likely that you or one of your friends will soon get busted for LOLing and OMWing in traffic. How does that affect your wallet?

First, there's the cost of the ticket, which varies from state to state, depending on the base charge, court fees and other expenses. As an example:?Online Auto Insurance?(OAI) reports that the base fee in California is $20, but after adding on all the ancillary costs, texters leave the courthouse a staggering $336 poorer.

Then, there's the question of insurance. OAI secured three quotes for a hypothetical driver: a 25-year-old single male, living in New York, driving roughly 10,000 miles each year in his?2008 Honda Civic?DX, with one texting ticket on his record.

In one scenario, the violation didn't cause the quote to?change?at all: the hypothetical driver paid the same with or without the ticket. At the other two insurers, however, rates jumped 9.1% and 10.5%.?And although OAI didn't explore the issue, chances are that a second texting ticket would likely have even more dire consequences for the insured.

Of course, we'd be remiss if we didn't point out that OAI makes its money by brokering?auto?insurance policies for drivers. In other words, it's in OAI's best interests to make drivers aware of discrepancies in insurance rates, since that encourages new business.

That said, we're not surprised by the findings. In fact, we're a bit surprised that the difference in quotes wasn't a bit more dramatic for those with texting tickets on their record.?

Quick release bandage tape: No more tears from tears

ScienceDaily (Oct. 29, 2012) ? Commercial medical tapes on the market today are great at keeping medical devices attached to the skin, but often can do damage -- such as skin tissue tearing -- once it's time to remove them.

A research team from Brigham and Women's Hospital (BWH) has invented a quick-release tape that has the strong adhesion properties of commercial medical tape, but without the ouch factor upon removal.

The team was led by Jeffrey Karp, PhD, BWH Division of Biomedical Engineering, Department of Medicine, senior study author in collaboration with The Institute for Pediatric Innovation which defined the need and requirements for a new neonatal adhesive based on national surveys of neonatal clinicians.

The study detailing the tape design will be electronically published on October 29, 2012 in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences. The research was conducted in collaboration with Robert Langer, PhD at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

The tape which achieves strong adhesion when securing medical devices to skin, but could also easily peel off safely, utilizes a three-layer design approach that sets a new paradigm for quick-release medical tapes.

"Current adhesive tapes that contain backing and adhesive layers are tailored to fracture at the adhesive-skin interface. With adults the adhesive fails leaving small remnants of adhesive on the skin while with fragile neonate skin, the fracture is more likely to occur in the skin causing significant damage," said Karp. "Our approach transitions the fracture zone away from the skin to the adhesive-backing interface thus completely preventing any harm during removal."

The approach incorporates an anisotropic adhesive interface between the backing and adhesive layers. The anisotropic properties of this middle layer means that it has different physical properties dependent on direction. For instance, take wood, which is stronger along the grain than across it.

The researchers employed laser etching and a release liner to create the anisotropic interface resulting in a medical tape with high shear strength (for strong adhesion) and low peel force (for safe, quick removal). Once the backing is peeled off, any remaining adhesive left on the skin can safely be rolled off with a finger using a "push and roll" technique.

"This is one of the biggest problems faced in the neonate units, where the patients are helpless and repeatedly wrapped in medical tapes designed for adult skin," said Bryan Laulicht, PhD, BWH Division of Biomedical Engineering, Department of Medicine, lead study author.

There are more than 1.5 million injuries each year in the United States caused by medical tape removal. Such injuries in babies and the elderly -- populations with fragile skin -- can range from skin irritation to permanent scarring.

Tackling The Obesity EpidemicYour Health Journal | Your Health ...

From The Valley Record?..

It?s no secret that obesity is one of the country?s most serious health problems. In the last 20 years, adult obesity rates have doubled while childhood obesity rates have more than tripled, according to an annual report released by Trust for America?s Health and the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation.

?Obesity is a major health crisis in our country. We take better care of our cars than our bodies,? Karen LaJambe, nurse practitioner at the Primary Care Clinic in Snoqualmie Valley Hospital said. ?We get busy in our lives and put exercise at the bottom of our list.?

According to recent data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, over 35 percent of American adults are obese. Washington currently ranks 28th in the country, with self-reported obesity rates at 26.5 percent for adults. The latest percentile estimates for children between the ages of 2 and 19 years who are considered overweight or obese range from 26.7 to 33.6 percent.

?Concerns about the trends in children?s weight have been brewing for several years now in the healthcare community,? Ron Spiegel, M.D., and pediatrician for Snoqualmie Ridge Medical Clinic said. ?With more and more children being diagnosed with elevated BMIs (Body Mass Index), the conversations about this issue need to be out in the open and dealt with directly.?

BMI uses height and weight measurements to estimate how much body fat a person has. Adults who have a BMI of 30 or higher are considered obese. Children are considered obese when their BMI is greater than the 95th percentile.

Alicia Keys Blog on Being Strong Inside and Out

After I had my son, I could not believe how hard it was to get myself back to the gym, but I knew that in order to be the mother I wanted to be, it was important I take care of myself too. Sometimes going to the gym at the end of the day can feel like the last thing you want to do on top of all your other commitments. Or at the beginning of the day when all you wish you could do is sleep an extra hour (I know that's how I feel most mornings).

Guideline of Linen Cabinets for Bathrooms | Shower Remodel

Linen cabinets for bathrooms are one type of bathroom storage furniture that fits in nicely with smaller bathroom settings. They are usually tall, thin cabinets that can be placed against a wall for storing towels, sheets and bath accessories. A corner linen tower can fit snugly against the corner wall of your bathroom to save even more space. These pieces are available in different colors or wood finishes including cherry, walnut, oak and pine.

White Wooden Bathroom Space Saver Storage Linen Cabinet Shelves Bath OrganizerWhite Wooden Bathroom Space Saver Storage Linen Cabinet Shelves Bath Organizer

Some styles of linen cabinets for bathrooms contain open shelves for easy access to the items being stored while others come with covered or glass cabinet doors to hide the products within. Cabinets with adjustable shelves offer more flexibility in storage as linens and towels could be stored at the bottom and more delicate items placed on the top shelf. Linen cabinets, or usually called as linen towers, come in a variety of beautiful styles to include both traditional and contemporary designs. They are but one way you can organize your bathroom accessories while sprucing up the environment.

It can be a struggle for anyone looking for bathroom linen cabinets to find a piece that goes well with their existing bathroom furniture and fixtures. Browsing through the huge array of available cabinets can leave shoppers overwhelmed, especially if they don?t know the terminology used to describe furniture styles. Below is an explanation of the three most common styles that you will come across in your search.

The first style is traditional linen cabinets. Traditional bathroom linen cabinets take their inspiration from antique European design. In some cases you will also find Asian-inspired designs, which were popular in the United State and Europe during the Victorian era. The traditional style encompasses a variety of more specific styles, such as Neoclassical, French Country, or British Colonial.

The traditional style is very orderly, with furniture pieces often being purchased in matching sets of several pieces to give an entire room a cohesive look. If you are redoing your bathroom in the traditional style you may want to make your linen cabinet and any other furniture in the room, such as your vanity and sink cabinet, match for a very traditional look.
