Netflix now available on Amazon Kindle Fire in the UK

Android Central

Despite the Amazon Kindle Fire in the UK coming with Amazon's own LOVEFiLM service baked in, that hasn't stopped rivals Netflix trying to muscle in. Netflix is now available to download from the Amazon Appstore for British Kindle Fire owners.

The experience and content catalog is exactly the same as on regular Android devices, giving new Kindle Fire owners in Britain their choice of streaming providers. Both LOVEFiLM and Netflix come with free trials too, so be sure to check them both out first before committing your cash.

Wall Street edges higher after historic closure

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Stocks edged higher on Wednesday in the first trading session since a massive storm in the Northeast forced a two-day market closure.

Trading was expected to be volatile as exchanges dealt with pent-up demand from two untraded days. This was the first time the stock market had closed for two straight days because of weather since a major blizzard in 1888.

Among the biggest gainers of the day were Ford Motor Co, which reported strong results during the market closure, and Home Depot, which rallied as people bought supplies to repair storm damage.

Ford gained 5 percent to $10.83 as the most-traded stock on the New York Stock Exchange while Home Depot, a Dow component, added 3 percent to $61.85.

The New York Stock Exchange and the Nasdaq shuttered operations on Monday, hours before Hurricane Sandy made landfall on the U.S. eastern seaboard with devastating consequences. Transport into and around New York City remained limited on Wednesday, while wide-scale power outages meant many would be unable to work from home.

"Liquidity remains very light in equities as there are a lot of empty seats on the Street," said Dave Lutz, a Baltimore-based trader with Stifel, Nicolaus & Co. "We're also seeing some outsized moves."

The Dow Jones industrial average was up 59.10 points, or 0.45 percent, at 13,166.31. The Standard & Poor's 500 Index was up 4.62 points, or 0.33 percent, at 1,416.56. The Nasdaq Composite Index rose 1.45 points, or less than 0.1 percent, at 2,989.4.

Industrial stocks were the strongest on the day, rising 1 percent as investors bet the group would see additional demand from rebuilding efforts after the storm. The KBW Insurance sector fell 0.1 percent.

Ford posted a third-quarter profit that trounced analysts' forecasts on Tuesday, driven by higher vehicle prices and record profit margins of 12 percent in North America. Wednesday will be the first day investors will be able to trading on the earnings.

General Motors reported earnings Wednesday that beat expectations, sending shares up 5.4 percent to $24.54.

Among the most active Nasdaq stocks, Apple Inc slumped 2 percent to $591.69. The company announced management changes during the market closure.

Walt Disney Co agreed to buy filmmaker George Lucas's Lucas film Ltd and its "Star Wars" franchise for $4.05 billion in cash and stock, a blockbuster deal that includes the surprise promise of a new film in the series in 2015. Disney, a Dow component, edged 0.2 percent lower.

Investors will be looking ahead to Friday's U.S. nonfarm payrolls report, the last before the November 6 presidential election, which is expected to show 125,000 jobs added in October, up 11,000 from the previous month. (Additional reporting by Ed Krudy; Editing by James Dalgleish)

Study of First 3 Years of Life of Children With and Without ASD

Health and Disability Neurological Disorders Autism Information

Information provided by Society for Research in Child Development - Published: 2012-10-30

The development of children with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is much like that of children without ASD at 6 months of age, but differs afterwards. That's the main finding of the largest prospective, longitudinal study to date comparing children with early and later diagnosis of ASD with children without ASD. The study appears in the journal Child Development and has implications for clinical work, public health, and policy.

The study was conducted by researchers at the Kennedy Krieger Institute, the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health, and the Aging Brain Center at the Institute for Aging Research and Hebrew SeniorLife at Harvard Medical School.

The study sought to learn more about the patterns of development during the first three years of life in children with and without ASD to better understand how ASD can be detected as early as possible. It is the first prospective study to examine early-onset ASD (by 14 months) and later-onset ASD (after 14 months) over the first three years, pinpointing where development looks the same and where it diverges.

ASD comprises a group of disorders of brain development that affects about 1 in 88 American children.

Researchers looked at 235 primarily White children with and without an older sibling with autism, testing them at regular intervals from ages 6 to 36 months. Using standardized and play-based assessments, they tested children's fine motor skills, understanding of spoken language, and spoken language production skills. They also measured how often the children shared their emotions and initiated communication with others.

The study looked at early development across three groups:

  • Children without ASD
  • Children with ASD who were identified by 14 months
  • Children with ASD identified after 14 months.

* At 6 months, development within the early, and later, identified ASD groups was comparable to each other and to the non-ASD group.

* At 14 and 18 months, the early-identified ASD group performed below the later-identified ASD group in many aspects of development.

* By 24 to 36 months, the two groups showed similar levels of development.

"Results show that ASD has a preclinical phase when detecting it may be difficult," explains Rebecca Landa, director of the Kennedy Krieger Institute's Center for Autism and Related Disorders and the study's lead author. "In some children with ASD, early signs of developmental disruption may not be ASD-specific.

"Routinely administering general developmental screeners, such as the Ages and Stages Questionnaire, should begin in infancy, complemented by ASD-specific screeners by 14 months," suggests Landa. "Screening should be repeated through early childhood. If concerning signs of delay associated with ASD are observed in a child who scores normally on standardized tests, further assessment is warranted."

PointerThis web page is from the Disabled World Autism Information section which provides: Autism is a brain development disorder that is characterized by impaired social interaction communication and restricted repetitive behavior.

Expert: Major Tax Increase Needed To Fund Texas Schools

Jon Boyes, Getty ImagesThey?re laying the groundwork in Austin for you to pay far more in taxes to support the state?s schools.

A school finance expert told the ongoing trial over funding public education that the state?s schools need ?at least? $8 billion more a year to ?ensure its students meet tough new academic standards.?

Lynn Moak of Moak, Casey and Associates, which bills itself as ?school finance and accountability experts? testified that the Texas school system entered the 2012-2013 school year with 25,000 fewer teachers and staffers, while Texas schools added 46,000 new students.

The trial is a combination of six lawsuits challenging all facets of the way the state?s education is funded. It includes not only property poor school districts which are demanding a bigger chunk of the property tax pie, but wealthy districts which are opposing the current ?Robin Hood? school funding system, and advocates of charter schools which want the entire system scrapped and ?vouchers? available for parents to send their kids to private schools.

Moak testified that ?nearly half? of Texas 9th graders are now not on track to graduate, because they failed at least one of the state?s new, more rigorous, standardized tests.

Opponents say if there is any correlation between throwing money at public schools and increased student performance, they?d like to see evidence of it.

Also being questioned at the trial are wide differences in spending between schools within school districts, and the amount of money spent for non instructional activities, like sports and administrators, at public school campuses.

Don?t expect a ruling right away. The trial is expected to last until January.

Some S.Africa Amplats strikers defy return deadline

RUSTENBURG, South Africa (Reuters) - Some striking workers at Anglo American Platinum's (Amplats) Rustenburg mines in South Africa refused to return to work on Tuesday despite an offer by the company to reinstate 12,000 men sacked for taking part in a six-week wildcat walkout.

Months of labour unrest in the mines have hit platinum and gold output, threatened growth in Africa's biggest economy and drawn criticism of President Jacob Zuma for his handling of the most damaging strikes since the end of apartheid in 1994.

However, the number of strikes has dropped in the last two weeks amid management threats of mass dismissals and some payment sweetners.

At Amplats' Thembelani mine near Rustenburg, 120 km (70 miles) northwest of Johannesburg, hundreds of miners barricaded a road to one of the shafts with burning tyres.

"No one is at work today unless they snuck in," Mayford Mjuza, a worker representative, told Reuters as a police helicopter hovered nearby.

Amplats, the world's biggest producer of the precious metal, said it was still gathering details on attendance at its four strike-hit Rustenburg mines.

The company said last week it had reached a deal with several unions and would be offering sweeteners such as a one-off hardship payment of 2,000 rand to end a strike that has crippled production.

A return to work on Tuesday was one of the conditions attached to the deal.

However, workers at Thembelani said they were determined to stay away until Amplats matched a salary increase of up to 22 percent offered by rival Lonmin after a violent wildcat walkout at its nearby Marikana platinum mine in August.

The Lonmin offer came in the wake of the police killing of 34 miners on August 16, the bloodiest security incident since apartheid.

MacDonald Motsaathebe, who has been with Amplats for 12 years, said workers did not agree to the deal struck at the weekend between Amplats and unions including the National Union of Mineworkers.

"We didn't agree to the offer. We want 16,000 rand. Lonmin miners got it, and we want it," said the 35-year-old, whose salary supports nine people. "We earn peanuts."

Workers are expected to meet later on Tuesday.

While the situation at Amplats has yet to be resolved, tensions at other mining companies have eased.

Striking workers at gold firms including AngloGold Ashanti and Gold Fields returned to work last week after threats of mass dismissals and an offer of a small pay increase.

What Social Media Does And Doesn't Do For Business - Business ...

?

Retailers of every size are pressured to invest in making money off social network sites like Facebook and Twitter.

As businesses navigate the social landscape, it's important to know what social media does and doesn't do for sales.?

Contrary to popular belief, it doesn't look like social networks do a whole lot to drive sales, according to a recent report by?Sucharita Mulpuru at Forrester Research.

Less than 1 percent of the online transactions she tracked could be traced to a social media post, Mulpuru told us. With those kind of numbers, it seems like a waste to invest in selling products via social media.

E-mail marketing and paid search traffic were much more meaningful sales drivers, she said. That means that it might be worth business' time to invest in a loyalty program or simply ask for customers' e-mail addresses and send them promotions.?

E-mail marketing is especially effective because it is low-cost in comparison to paying a search engine like Google to place a business' product first when a consumer searches for it.?

Mulpuru's study also shows the difference between new and repeat customers. New customers tend to be drawn in by search traffic, while e-mailing is more effective with repeat customers who are familiar with the business' name.?

A big theme of Mulpuru's study is that social networks are overhyped as sales drivers.?

"While the hype around social networks as a driver of influence in e-commerce continues to capture the attention of online executives, the truth is that social continues to struggle and registers as a barely negligible source of sales for?either new or repeat buyers," Mulpuru says.?

That means that less than 1 percent of customers see a Facebook or Twitter ad or post, click on it, and end up buying something. The vast majority of traffic comes from searches or typing in a URL directly.?

But that doesn't mean that businesses shouldn't invest in social media at all.?

Businesses should have a presence on major social networks and engage with customers there, Mulpuru says. But while a business cultivates a social media strategy, it's important to remember that this will not be a big sales-driver.?

The most effective method for increasing sales is getting the word out about your business' direct URL, Mulpuru says. If customers know a website, they're likely to visit and buy something.?

According to Mulpuru, businesses who don't have a simple URL should change it to something consumer-friendly. This will increase traffic to the site?and eventually sales.?

It's important to interact customers and make sure they know how where to find a business on social networks like Facebook and Twitter, she says.?

While other forms of online marketing are more effective than social media, that doesn't mean businesses shouldn't have a presence there.?

But businesses shouldn't expect sales numbers to change right away just because they're heavily investing in Facebook or Twitter. Mulpuru says:?"Researchers still haven't figured out how to put a dollar value on social media, but it's still an incredibly important way to engage with customers."

Here's a chart showing revenue drivers outside of a business' website:?

Ludwig von Mises and the Nazis - Chicago Gold and Silver Investing ...

Ludwig-von-mises-mises-institute20von20mises20in2019711
Ludwig von Mises was one of the inspirations of Austrian economics in the United States.

It can be argued that the last century has been a battle of two economic ideologies. On one side is the centrally planned government focused Keynesians. On the other is the free market, individual, hands off focus from the Austrian economics. One of the greatest influencers of Austrian economics was Ludwig von Mises. Mises was born and grew up in Austria. He left his homeland Austria to escape the Nazis who took over his beloved Austria. He settled in the United States where he continued his economic work.

A lot of his work in America was a repudiation of the Nazi economic ideology. National Socialism or the Nazi's was a form of socialism. It was similar to pure socialism in that the state controlled most of the means of production. Mises was the complete opposite. He believed in free markets with the state for the most part not involved in the contorl or ownership of the means of production.

Mises
If Americs is not careful, a form of socialism can take control.

Isn't it ironic, that as we approach the 40th anniversary of Mises death, that socialism and it's ugly effects are being felt in America. The economic fight is no longer against the Nazis. The fight here in America is internal. If the socialist win, you may see future Mises fleeing America for more freeer pastures.

You need to find a new dentist. Your old one wasn?t working out or you just moved to town. Whatever your reasons, you?ve decided that this time you really want to invest the time and find the right dentist for you and your family.

Below you will find a step by step guide on how to find the best dentist in the area, especially if you are looking for a dentist in Hawkinsville, Ga..

#1: ?Check to see if your dentist insurance recommends anyone

If you have dental insurance, you can save a lot of money by selecting a dentist that works with your insurance carrier. The easiest way to check this is to contact your dental insurance company and ask them what dentist in Hawkinsville, Ga.?area are covered under your insurance. They should be able to provide you with a list of dentists that you can choose from in your area. Some dental insurance companies allow you to use any dentist. However, this may require you to pay for the services upfront, and then be reimbursed directly from the insurance company.

#2: ?Ask your friends and family for dentist references

One of the best ways to find the right dentist in for you is to ask your family, friends, coworkers and neighbors to recommend a dentist for you. If you trust the opinion of the person you ask, then this could be a great reference for you. ?You can also check online for different references for dentists. Many people use the internet to tell other about their good or bad experiences with different dentist in Hawkinsville, Ga.?area. This may give you a good overall picture of what the dentist?s patients think about his services.

#3: ?Check the Dentist?s (and his staff?s) credentials

When deciding which dentist is right for you, it is important to make sure that the dentist you are considering has the right education and experience. You definitely want to choose a dentist who has either a DMD (Doctor of Dental Medicine) or a DDS (Doctor of Dental Surgery) degree. It is also a good idea to choose a dentist who is a member of the American Dental Association. This association makes sure that each of its members has the right dental credentials, and also required continuing education classes. You also want to choose a dentist who has several years of experience in providing dental care to patients in your specific area.

There are two specific areas that you really want to check up on your dentist?credentials:

Dentist?Education

First off, you?ll need to make sure that the dentist is educated and certified. Check into the school where the dentist in Hawkinsville, Ga.?obtained his degree. Was the school reputable or accredited? Did he belong to a particular honor society? You don?t want your dentist to have gone to a fly by night school or a dentist who just barely passed school.

Dentist?Professional Organizations

The next step in choosing a dentist is to look at his current affiliations. Is the dentist involved in any dentistry associations? Has he or she held a position in that organization? The dentist?s involvement in professional associations like the American Dental Association can tell you if they know the best practices and current innovations.

#4: ?Look into your dentists??track record

Find out what kind of experience your dentist in Hawkinsville, Ga.?has had. How long have they been practicing? Are they part of a long, standing, well-known practice if they are new? Do they have specialties? Check to see if they or any previous practices that they worked at have had complaints filed against them. Ask around town. If no one has heard of them, that may be a red flag. Or even worse, someone you know may have received bad service. Of course, sometimes one person may have had a bad experience, while everyone else has had a good one.

#5: ?Find out what services your dentist offers

Not all dentists have the exact same goods and services. When you choose a dentist in the area, call the dentist or go to their website to see the services offered. Make sure that the services offered will fit your current and projected future needs. It can be expensive if you have to go to a specialty office later on. Make sure that they offer comprehensive exams. A good quality dentist will do more than just have an oral hygienist clean your teeth, especially on the first visit. Do they take x-rays? Do they check your whole mouth or just the teeth? Do they offer counseling or financial programs? It?s significant to consider whether or not the dentist in Hawkinsville, Ga.?provides information on all aspects of oral hygiene.

#6: ?Make an appointment with your dentist

After you have gone through all of the previous steps, you should call and make an appointment. There are several reason why you should make an appointment even before you have decided upon your final dentist. First, you can tell a lot about the dentist?s office by how their staff treats you on the phone. Are they polite? Do they get you in quickly? Secondly, you really can?t make a judgment call about the dentist until you have seen them in person. Visiting the office can send some red flags that you hadn?t previously seen.

Your visit shouldn?t be for anything serious. They should just give you a consultation first. Be wary of any dentist in Hawkinsville, Ga.?that suggests immediate, extreme dental work and discourages a second opinion.

#7: ?Give the dentist a post visit evaluation

Was the office clean? Was the staff polite? Did the dentist offer you advice that you were uncomfortable with? Were they up to date on all the latest practices? Were all of their instruments in good repair? DO they work with your insurance?

When you go for your visit, take your check list of important items with you. As you talk with the dentist in Hawkinsville, Ga., mark down things that they have or don?t. This will make your post visit evaluation easier.
