We are leaving emissions cuts too late

EMISSIONS are still way too high to stop dangerous climate change, warns a new report from the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP).

To stop the Earth warming more than 2 ?C above preindustrial levels, global emissions must peak at 44 gigatonnes in 2020 and then fall. However, the report says that 2020 emissions are likely to be between 8 to 13 gigatonnes higher. This range is calculated on how well or not countries deliver on their pledges to cut emissions. So in the best-case scenario, where everyone meets their targets, emissions are still 8 Gt too high.

This "emissions gap" has grown: first estimates by UNEP in 2010 put it at between 5 and 9 Gt.

Unless drastic action is taken soon, we are likely to see a 4 ?C rise this century, warns Simon Anderson at the International Institute for Environment and Development in Edinburgh, UK.

A report from the World Bank, also published this week, paints a stark picture of a 4 ?C warmer world riven by severe heatwaves, floods and droughts. "It will be absolutely catastrophic for certain parts of the world," Anderson says.

By delaying emissions cuts, the world is simply deciding to pay more for them later, he says.

The Unbearable Whiteness of White Meat

On Thanksgiving, a family member will carve up the turkey and ask us all, "White meat or dark?"? Ron Rosenbaum scoffs at the preference for white meat over dark and discusses several possible reasons for the bias. Does the darker tone recall the soil we tread? Or are we betraying a more insidious prejudice? His original piece from 2010 is reprinted below.????

Why white meat?

Why white meat?

Let me say at the outset, I don't mean to be a buzz-kill. I'm happy for you if you like white-meat turkey. I don't think less of you. In fact I think rather more of you for being able to be satisfied with so little in the way of flavor. Perhaps in a past life you were a self-flagellating friar. (I'm reading Wolf Hall and can't help the allusion. Best novel I've read in years, by the way.)

But, seriously, I mean no disrespect, especially in this holiday celebration of fellowship and thanksgiving. And, yes, I'm familiar with the phrase "de gustibus non est disputandum"?there's no arguing about taste. But in the case of white meat from a Thanksgiving turkey, well, I'd argue about that.

White meat turkey has no taste. Its slabs of dry, fibrous material are more like cardboard conveyances, useful only for transporting flavorsome food like stuffing and gravy from plate to mouth. It's less a foodstuff than a turkey app, simulated meat, a hyperlink to real food.

But I am fascinated by how tastes get made and unmade, the intersection of culture, class and sensory responses. Not being a postmodernist I wouldn't call the overwhelming American preference for white-meat turkey a form of cultural hegemony. More like a mass hallucination. Why, for instance, hasn't white meat shared the same fate, the same cultural disenfranchisement, as packaged white bread?

Some of you may remember white bread. Not the white bread of crusty baguettes and the like, but the white bread of sliced, standardized loaves of cotton wool, the stuff people ate before everyone switched to baguettes and focaccia and brioche, which are, yes, often "white" but not "white bread" in the old-fashioned, mass-produced sense. I'm talking about Wonder Bread bread.

White bread of this sort is still around, can still be found, but no longer enjoys any elite status. Refined white-flour bread once was regarded as the peak of social refinement by the new middle class, perhaps because it left behind the time-consuming home-baked whole-grain variety. No gritty grains, no uncracked wheat, just highly processed, snow-white identical slices. It was aspirationally upper-crusty even at tea time when the crusts were cut off.

Then "refined" became a dirty word, nutritionally at least. White bread suffered two successive falls from grace. First from upper-middle class households, in the years when "middle class" became not an achievement to be proud of but a signifier of negative attributes: White bread came to be associated with boring blandness, suburban sanitized white-picket-fence-ified phony gentility. A veritable curse upon a person or a work of art: "That's so white-bread."

And then the final fall, evident in the successive waves of ever-more-prevalent stone-ground, hippie, New Age, whole-grain, zucchini-infused, heavily seeded, soy-enhanced brown bread. Its cause was aided by the nutritionists who scolded that eating white bread was a virtual death sentence since processing removed all nutritional value, which caused manufacturers to pump artificial vitamins into the white paste they turned out. White bread, we were instructed, was almost as toxic as the dread poison white sugar.

Even mass marketers shunned it in favor of (often artificially flavored and colored) brown bread, which came in whole-grain and "cracked-wheat" and fake bakery configurations. By this time, eating white bread, buying white bread became worse than being white-bread. It became redneck. It became a signifier of trailer-park, gas-station-convenience-store culture. Imagine a New York hostess?a hostess anywhere!?serving some of those pale squares of paper pulp at a dinner party. Might as well serve TV dinners for the main course, or a Dorito burrito bag.

I digress on the fate of white bread because what's mystifying to me is the profound enigma: Why hasn't this same dynamic affected white-meat turkey? Yes, there are the foodies who claim their "heritage" turkeys offer white meat that tastes much better than what you find on those obscenely bloated Butterballs. But at $14 a pound, a single heritage turkey can free-range up to $200 for a single family-size bird.

And then when you present your heritage bird, according to some comments I've read on foodie chat-room boards, you're liable to get comments like, "How come the white meat isn't more white?"

This is what I can't understand: Why does most of America want its turkey meat white? Why do people flock to the obscenely named Butterballs, which boast of overinflated breasts as unnatural as the silicone boobs of truck-stop strip joints or of the Kardashian sisters?

Why have we broken the chains of the whiteness that bound us to fatally tasteless white bread while still remaining imprisoned in the white-meat turkey ghetto?

A friend was trying to convince me that in fact America has lost its taste for this tasteless meat, but the Sunday before Thanksgiving I was listening to the CBS all-news radio station in New York City, and they were doing a fluff piece on the turkey buying that was peaking that weekend. And the reporter was interviewing some guy from Stew Leonard's, a food mega-store that serves New York City's sophisticated suburbs and exurbs in Westchester County and Fairfield County, Conn.

And the guy was boasting that his turkeys were "bred to have 18 to 22 percent more white meat." After which the CBS announcer made a stupid wisecrack about breasts that alone would make you want to forgo the silicone-textured mega-butterballs.

And these are ciabatta-bread people, not Wonder Bread people! Do they still associate white meat with refinement? It was enough to make me wonder whether there could be a racial, if not racist, subtext here. Perhaps there is a clue in the shifting fate of the "other white meat"?pork. I'll never forget the moment when I learned the antebellum racial origin of the phrase "living high on the hog." I had driven down the I-5 "grapevine," that fog-shrouded mountainous interior route from San Francisco to L.A. with a couple of Communist Party women who were mothers of death row prisoners (long story). When dawn broke and we arrived in Watts, they guided me to a place called Ray's Redwood City, an all-night, almost all-black joint where the ladies of Saturday night dined with the ministers of Sunday morning (not at the same tables), and my fellow travelers ordered me a dish called "high on the hog," a mountain of scrambled eggs topped by a fried pork chop.

It was then I learned the etymology of the phrase in America. It hails from the plantation days, when the white slave owners dined on choice pork chops cut from "high on the hog" while the slaves made do with the lower parts of the pig?the ham hocks, the pigs feet, the pork bellies, and the innards. White meat was high on the hog, but not higher on flavor than other (often darker) cuts. Indeed the "other white meat" now available most frequently in lean and tasteless pork chops and cutlets has little more taste than white meat turkey.

Marketing Business Program | Business World Blog: Street Smart ...

Marketing Business Program Marketing Business Program There are several ways to market apprenticeship programs, all of which can be easily planned with a little brainstorming.

E-zine and E-mail Advertising

Seek out list owners or e-zines whose subscribers would be perfect prospects to purchase your apprenticeship program. Six months in advance of the start date, give the list owners and e-zine publishers prewritten articles and e-mails to send.*

Direct those who respond to these e-mails to your Web site for more information, and be sure to put together a shopping cart page so that people can register online.

Direct Mail

Direct mail is still the most effective tool for marketing high-priced apprenticeship programs. And whether you use direct mail to generate leads to whom you later send an elaborate package, or whether you use the direct-mail piece itself to close the sale, you can put lots more information about your program?s content and benefit in a written direct-mail letter than you can in an e-mail or even on a Web page.

Display Advertisements in Magazines

Running ads in magazines is an ideal lead-generating strategy because just one registration will often more than cover the cost of the ad. However, be aware that most magazines also reach thousands of people who will never be good prospects for you. It?s best to run only in magazines that you?re certain are read by qualified prospects. Trade magazines are ideal for this. General consumer publications are not.

Preview Teleseminars

Teleseminars are a favored strategy simply because they are so effective. Today, teleseminars are used to sell all kinds of programs, but they are especially effective in selling business how-to and apprenticeship programs because they can be targeted to prospects in specific industries.?

To get people on the call, use an e-mail or a postcard with enticing copy about what they can expect to learn from you.

Spybot - Search & Destroy 2.0

Twelve years ago "spyware" wasn't in most people's vocabulary, so early antispyware products like Ad-Aware and Spybot had to work on education. It's not entirely clear which of them had the first full-scale antispyware?even Spybot's creator isn't sure. But Spybot was definitely one of the first. Spybot - Search & Destroy 2.0 is the first update in a long, long time. It's now billed as a full antivirus that promises to destroy "spyware, malware, adware and other malicious software." It does no such thing.

Spybot is free for non-commercial use, though the company solicits donations. The $13.99 Home edition adds scheduled scan and a couple other features, and eliminates the nag screens. For $24.99 you get the Professional edition which, among other things, gets you access to the protected repair environment and the ability to create rescue CDs. The core antivirus protection is the same.

Some earlier editions of the product included the oddly-named TeaTimer module for realtime protection against new malware attacks. The current edition is strictly a cleanup tool.

Spybot's main window includes icons for common tasks like checking for updates, launching a scan, and checking files in quarantine. It even has an icon to donate money to the designers. Checking a box for Advanced User Mode reveals almost a dozen more icons, though not all of them are functional in the free edition.

Easy Installation
I had no trouble installing Spybot on my twelve malware-infested test systems. Avira Antivirus Free 2013, AhnLab V3 Click, and several others had difficulty with installation on a system that will only boot in Safe Mode. V3 Click actually wouldn't install at all. Spybot sailed through that installation just as it did the other eleven.

I frequently encounter problems after a scan due to over-zealous deletion of system files. F-Secure and VIPRE Antivirus 2013 needed tons of tech support work to restore damaged test systems. Spybot didn't do any damage, but that's because it didn't do much of anything.

Dismal Malware Removal
I ran an initial update on each test system. Wow, the Spybot updater is loaded with unnecessary detail, including the precise version of every component file. Once the update completed, I launched a full system scan. Spybot offers to clean up temporary files before starting a scan; I accepted its offer.

My impression of a typical virus scan is that the antivirus looks at each file and checks whether it matches a signature, or a behavior pattern, or a heuristic signature. Judging from its progress display, Spybot instead goes through its list of known malware and checks whether each is present. I noticed some venerable names like Aureate and Virtumonde in the display.

On completion, Spybot displays everything it found. This includes various types of malware, but also includes insecure system settings, tracking cookies, recently-used file lists, and other distractions. It looks like a lot, but in fact on two of my test systems Spybot missed all three of the installed malware samples.

At the end of each scan, a window pops up explaining what to do "if you suspect that Spybot might not have detected some issues that other scanners have detected." It offers to disable third party cookies (for whatever good that would do) or submit files for analysis.

Spybot detected just 32 percent of my current malware samples, knocking Anvi Smart Defender (which got 60 percent) out of last place. It did a terrible job removing the few samples it did find. Fully half of those were still running after Spybot's supposed cleanup. Spybot's overall score of 1.5 points is also a new low.

Jesse Jackson Jr. resigns from Congress

Jesse Jackson Jr. (Mike Segar/Reuters)Jesse Jackson Jr. resigned his seat in Congress on Wednesday, acknowledging an ongoing federal investigation into his campaign funds and expressing a desire to be remembered for what he "did right."

Text from Jackson's resignation letter, submitted on Wednesday to House Speaker John Boehner:

During this journey I have made my share of mistakes. I am aware of the ongoing federal?investigation into my activities and I am doing my best to address the situation responsibly,?cooperate with the investigators, and accept responsibility for my mistakes, for they are my mistakes and mine alone.?None of us is immune from our share of shortcomings or human?frailties and I pray that I will be remembered for what I did right.

Jackson, son of the Rev. Jesse Jackson,?cited his health issues as the reason for his departure on Wednesday, saying his condition and "treatment regimen" were "incompatible" with his congressional responsibilities.

This summer, Jackson abruptly dropped out of the public eye. His staff first reported the congressman?had taken a leave of absence for exhaustion and then indicated his condition was more serious.?After pressure from colleagues and others, it was revealed Jackson was being treated at the Mayo Clinic for bipolar disorder and gastrointestinal issues.

Jackson left the clinic in September but returned the following month. He was reportedly at the clinic on Nov. 6, when he easily won re-election in his Democratic Chicago-area district.

Recent reports indicate that a federal probe into an alleged misuse of Jackson's campaign funds has widened. Some sources have suggested Jackson's resignation would be part of a plea deal.

News outlets?reported on Wednesday morning that the Illinois Democrat had canceled a morning conference call with staff for fear of media eavesdropping. Then Jonathan Jackson, Jackson's brother,?told the Chicago Tribune a resignation was imminent.

House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi expressed support for Jackson in the wake of the news. "It is with great sadness that we learned of Congressman Jackson's decision to submit his resignation," Pelosi said in a statement. "His service in Congress was marked by his eloquent advocacy for his constituents' views and interests."

The timing of Jackson's resignation means he will not be sworn in for the new term beginning in January. A special election will be held for his seat.

(AP) ? Internal emails among U.S. military officers indicate that no sailors watched Osama bin Laden's burial at sea from the USS Carl Vinson and traditional Islamic procedures were followed during the ceremony.

The emails, obtained by The Associated Press through the Freedom of Information Act, are heavily blacked out, but are the first public disclosure of government information about the al-Qaida leader's death. The emails were released Wednesday by the Defense Department.

Bin Laden was killed on May 1, 2011, by a Navy SEAL team that assaulted his compound in Abbottabad, Pakistan.

One email stamped secret and sent on May 2 by a senior Navy officer briefly describes how bin Laden's body was washed, wrapped in a white sheet, and then placed in a weighted bag.

According to another message from the Vinson's public affairs officer, only a small group of the ship's leadership was informed of the burial.

"Traditional procedures for Islamic burial was followed," the May 2 email from Rear Adm. Charles Gaouette reads. "The deceased's body was washed (ablution) then placed in a white sheet. The body was placed in a weighted bag. A military officer read prepared religious remarks, which were translated into Arabic by a native speaker. After the words were complete, the body was placed on a prepared flat board, tipped up, whereupon the deceased's body slid into the sea."

The email also included a cryptic reference to the intense secrecy surrounding the mission. "The paucity of documentary evidence in our possession is a reflection of the emphasis placed on operational security during the execution of this phase of the operation," Gaouette's message reads. Recipients of the email included Adm. Mike Mullen, then the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, and Gen. James Mattis, the top officer at U.S. Central Command. Mullen retired from the military in September 2011.

Earlier, Gaouette, then the deputy commander of the Navy's Fifth Fleet, and another officer used code words to discuss whether the helicopters carrying the SEALs and bin Laden's body had arrived on the Vinson.

"Any news on the package for us?" he asked Rear Adm. Samuel Perez, commander of the carrier strike group that included the Vinson.

"FEDEX delivered the package," Perez responded. "Both trucks are safely enroute home base."

Although the Obama administration has pledged to be the most transparent in American history, it is keeping a tight hold on materials related to the bin Laden raid. In a response to separate requests from the AP for information about the mission, the Defense Department said in March that it could not locate any photographs or video taken during the raid or showing bin Laden's body. It also said it could not find any images of bin Laden's body on the Vinson.

The Pentagon also said it could not find any death certificate, autopsy report or results of DNA identification tests for bin Laden, or any pre-raid materials discussing how the government planned to dispose of bin Laden's body if he were killed.

The Defense Department also refused to confirm or deny the existence of helicopter maintenance logs and reports about the performance of military gear used in the raid. One of the stealth helicopters that carried the SEALs to Abbottabad crashed during the mission and its wreckage was left behind. People who lived near bin Laden's compound took photos of the disabled chopper.

The AP is appealing the Defense Department's decision. The CIA, which ran the bin Laden raid and has special legal authority to keep information from ever being made public, has not responded to AP's request for records about the mission.

'Reducing Cancer Among Women of Color' App Challenge | The ...

Photograph Dr. J. Nadine Gracia is the Deputy Assistant Secretary for Minority Health (Acting) Calling all software developers, entrepreneurs, and innovators ? the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) seeks your help in empowering women in minority and underserved communities to fight and prevent cancer.

Each year, more than 300,000 new cases of breast, cervical, uterine, and ovarian cancer are diagnosed in the United States. While these diseases touch every community, disparities in education, prevention, early treatment, quality of care, and access to support mean that minority and underserved women bear a disproportionate burden.

In the face of these disparities, HHS has launched a new challenge to help turn the tide: the ?Reducing Cancer among Women of Color? App Challenge. The challenge invites developers to create an application (app) for mobile devices that can help improve the prevention and treatment of breast, cervical, uterine, and ovarian cancer. Up to $100,000 will be awarded for apps that provide high-quality health information to women and community health workers, interface securely with patient health records, and strengthen communication across provider care teams.

This month, as we reaffirm our commitment to promoting prevention and fighting cancer in recognition of National Breast Cancer Awareness Month, we are turning to new platforms and new approaches in our effort to address cancer disparities. We are reaching consumers where they are ? recognizing that minorities rely heavily on mobile devices for accessing information. We are turning to new technology, and sourcing solutions directly from those who understand it best. And we are raising awareness about health equity among new audiences ? including those who are already dedicated to thinking innovatively about solutions for tough challenges.

The ?Reducing Cancer among Women of Color? App Challenge is a partnership between the HHS Office of the National Coordinator for Health Information Technology and HHS?s Office of Minority Health. To learn more, visit Challenge.gov.

Court approves FTC's $22.5 million penalty for Google over Safari cookies

McKayla is unimpressed by your desserts.

The FTC might not have been impressed with Google bypassing Safari cookie settings in the name of +1 functionality, but it'll at least be satisfied with the outcome. A Northern District of California federal court has approved the FTC's proposed settlement, which sees Google pay a $22.5 million penalty in addition to altering its cookie behavior to respect privacy in Apple's browser. The fiscal punishment is a drop in the bucket for a company that might well make up that loss by the time you're done reading this; all the same, we'll take it if other web companies are more mindful of their behavior in the future.

Celebrity kitchens that make you want to cook

2 hrs.

They sing, they act and some of them even cook. While many celebrities are usually spotted dining out or confess to having private chefs, a small number of them say they love to play chef.

But who would blame them when their cooking space features high-end appliances, a deep farmhouse sink and extended counter space? We?re taking a tour through some gorgeous kitchens owned by celebs who actually use them.

Justin Timberlake and Jessica Biel
Who?s the cook in Justin Timberlake and Jessica Biel?s relationship?

The newlyweds actually share the kitchen duties, Timberlake told Jay Leno recently.

?She likes to cook. I like to bake ? so dinner and dessert,? Timberlake said.

Perhaps the two share duties in his modern Manhattan penthouse. The sleek and minimal space has deep counter space and stainless steel appliances.

Emma Stone
For Emma Stone, cooking is both therapy and passion. She confessed recently that baking was one way she could manage her anxiety growing up. Stone?s boyfriend, actor Andrew Garfield,?told Vanity Fair that the actress is also serious about some day opening a bakery of her own.

Might as well get some practice in! Her galley-style kitchen in her new Beverly Hills home has white tiled countertops, stainless steel appliances and a large sink with built-in drainboard.

Emma Stone bought her home in May 2012.

Gwyneth Paltrow
In between acting and raising a family with Coldplay rocker Chris Martin, Gwyneth Paltrow runs the website goop.com, which is devoted to healthy living. The actress also recently published a cookbook entitled ?My Father?s Daughter.?

The amateur chef likely needs a large space for preparing her meals, which is why her new?home in Los Angeles is perfect. The spacious and modern kitchen has high-end appliances and?a large island perfect for meal prep.

Paltrow?s kitchen would be a great setting for her next cookbook.

Matthew McConaughey
Texas-born actor?Matthew McConaughey?has long professed his love for Texas-style barbecue, stopping by Guy Fieri?s food show as well as sharing recipes with?Rachael Ray.

Even now as he prepares for a role requiring a strict diet, McConaughey told US Weekly he?s been preparing a lot of rib-eye steak for his wife, Camila Alves.

The couple share a home in Austin with their two children. Not only does McConaughey?s home include a large kitchen, but it also has a back patio with great barbecuing space.

McConaughey?s Austin home has great indoor and outdoor cooking spaces.

Taylor Swift
Taylor Swift has confessed that she loves to bake with her friends Selena Gomez and Emma Stone. She has plenty of kitchens spread across her homes in Nashville, and most recently Cape Cod, but we can imagine her spending time playing chef in her Beverly Hills home.

Her new California kitchen is a charming light-filled space with butcher block countertops and plenty of cabinet space.

Swift?s cheery cooking space is perfect for the singer.
