Thanks to Arbitron, I was honored to do a joint presentation at their Client Conference yesterday devoted to ?the digital dash.?? Valerie Shuman was a ?great get? for this session?(credit due to Dr.?Ed Cohen who envisioned this session).? She?s the VP of Industry Programs for the Connected Vehicle Trade Association and had some great insights about this rapidly growing and changing space.

Why was this even a topic?

As Valerie pointed out, the average age of a car in the U.S. is now 11 years old ? and that means that in the next year or so, many Americans will be in the market for a new vehicle.? And many of these consumers will purchase one that is equipped with a system like Ford?s SYNC and Toyota?s Entune.

This is significant because as we learned in Techsurvey8, a majority of our 57,300 respondents say the lion?s share of the broadcast radio listening takes place behind the wheel.? We also learned that half our sample is already able to connect a smartphone to their cars (yup, that AUX IN jack).

This means new options, connectivity, and a different experience than those pushbuttons that we?ve all grown to know and love.

I played a series of videos shot at CES and also SAE?s Convergence show this fall in Detroit.? I?ve been waiting nearly a year to show them to broadcasters, and I was thrilled about the reception they received at the conference.

Radio needs to understand what the automakers ? and aftermarket companies ? are thinking, and how it will impact the?listening experience ? or should I say ? the audio consumption experience.

So what can the average radio programmer, manager, or owner do about the oncoming connected car revolution?

  1. You need a mobile strategy.? This is a shopworn topic in this blog, but the smartphone is the center of the universe for these systems.? Making your station?s brand available on the key platforms is table stakes.
  2. Keep your content fresh and local.? What do the car guys know?? More than you think.? To a person, each one looks at AM/FM radio as local radio ? the programming that?broadcasters?create that no other audio entertainment outlet can.
  3. Rethink HD Radio. When you talk to the engineers, designers, and marketers at the big auto brands, they often talk about HD Radio integration as essential to providing a seamless experience for consumers ? amidst the offering of Sirius/XM, Pandora, and iPods.? I know this may sound counter-intuitive to many of you who hate on HD Radio, but if you listen to these automotive designers and engineers, you will hear a different story.
  4. Get close to your local car dealers. They are radio?s bread and butter.? As Valerie told the crowd at the Arbitron Client Conference, consumers are walking into dealerships and asking about the digital dash infotainment systems ? not air bags, braking systems, or convertible tops.? It is essential your local car dealership owners hear about the value of radio, and experience how it works to fill their showrooms.
  5. Take a test drive. If you don?t own a vehicle with one of these systems, you need to get behind the wheel and experience it for yourself.? Drive one, rent one, and experience a dashboard unlike any you?ve ever seen before. This is where your audience is headed, and understanding the new customer experience is as essential as understanding PPM ? if not more so.

Netflix 1080p streams no longer called XHigh, company credits improved encodes

While Netflix Watch Instantly movie streams are mostly useful for casual viewing, if you're interested in the actual quality of the video provided you may have noticed a few changes recently. Chronicled in a thread on AVS Forum and reported to us by several tipsters, more than a few users have noticed their streams on 1080p-capable hardware (PlayStation 3, WDTV Live) no longer rock the "X-High" notification (on PS3, hit select to view more information bout your streaming details) that had previously let them know they were getting the highest quality possible. We checked with Netflix, and according to the company, it's rolling out better encoding that improves picture quality despite using a lower bitrate. That means 1080p works even for people with slower connections, and increases detail on "textures, shadows, skies, and particularly faces." As a result, what was previously called "X-High HD" is now being labeled a tier lower.

While it wasn't mentioned specifically, some are theorizing the move is tied into Netflix's use of eyeIO's video encoding tech, which it announced earlier this year, to shrink the size of streams. eyeIO claims it can chop bandwidth by more than half for a 720p stream, something we're sure a company that's pushing as much data as Netflix would appreciate. Still, some viewers in the thread are claiming a noticeably softer picture as a result. Check after the break for the statement from Netflix, then take some time for "research" and let us know if you're noticing any changes in picture quality lately.

Umbrella

Umbrella from OpenDNS is a security service that protects all devices within the organization, regardless of whether the employee is connected to the work wireless network or working remotely from a coffee shop. Location doesn't matter; once the administrator defines and applies a security policy on the device, that device is protected as long as it is connected to the Internet.

There are many tools for managing what sites employees can or cannot visit when connected to the corporate network, but it is a little bit more challenging to manage users who are roaming. Umbrella isn't exactly a VPN service, although it creates a VPN connection to the OpenDNS Global Network so that all user traffic is encrypted. Since users are all connecting to the OpenDNS Global Network, administrators can also push out cloud-based anti-malware, anti-phishing, and anti-botnet protections to each device.

The service is tremendously straightforward to administer, and nearly transparent for users, making it a must-have for any IT administrator concerned about what is happening on the wireless network.

Umbrella is offered in three packages. Umbrella Mobility covers "mobile and roaming devices" and is priced at $25 a user a year. It offers cloud-based anti-malware protection and content policies for iOS, Windows, and Macs. Umbrella Enterprise costs $20 per user per year and applies anti-malware protection and policies to distributed networks. Umbrella Insights is priced at $25 per user per year and protects distributed networks and has Active Directory support. The listed price is for 100 users, but the actual price may vary with the actual number of users.

This review focuses on Umbrella Mobility.

The Web Dashboard
OpenDNS sent me the login details to the Web dashboard, but IT administrators would typically receive initial startup instructions over email after signing up for Umbrella Mobility. When I logged into the Web dashboard with my credentials, I saw three tabs on top of the screen, Overview, Configuration, and Reports. The Overview screen has four areas, a "Message Center," "Top Domains," "Top Identities," and "DNS Requests."

The core features are in the Configuration tab as this is where an administrator would apply policies, manage what devices are connected, and define rules. The Report tab has some pre-built reports, such as top domains and activity volume, as well as a way to filter the collected data by connected device, domain, date, and whether or not the action was blocked or not. The reporting felt a little limited as there was no way to customize the search or filters. That isn't necessarily a bad thing, since for most customers, what is available is just enough without becoming too overwhelming.

Getting Started
As the administrator, I sent an invitation to the user to connect my test iPad, much in the same way I sent out email invitations when provisioning iPads with iSimplyConnect. The invitation was an email with detailed download instructions on getting the VPN profile from the iTunes App Store. I did have a problem with the email instructing the user to "tap on the attachment to this email from your mobile device, and the security system will be automatically applied."

On one hand, IT is telling users don't click on links, don't open attachments or install apps you receive via email. And then comes this message from IT. I expected better from a security-savvy company like OpenDNS. The IT team should clearly warn users ahead of time that this email would be arriving and prepare the user that this is an exception to the "don't execute attachments" rule.

The dashboard also has the agent for Windows and Mac laptops. Administrators can distribute the zip file to users or push it out on to computers themselves. Android is not yet supported, although OpenDNS said that is in the works.

When the agent was installed on the laptop, it shows up as a little gray icon in systray indicating I was connected to the OpenDNS Global Network. It took about 90 seconds for the VPN icon to appear on the iPad's status bar.

From a user perspective, even with the way iOS is set up, installation was a breeze and automatic. It's lightweight, almost transparent, and doesn't really interfere with normal use.

Configurations
The fun part is playing with the policies. All the devices are grouped accordingly to type, so the test iPad appeared under Configuration -> Identities -> Mobile Devices and the test laptop under Configuration -> Identities -> Roaming Computers. I could see the laptop's name, the policy assigned to the laptop ("Default Policy"), a green indicator to indicate the policy was active, the last time it was connected, a lock icon to indicate the connection was encrypted, and the version number for the client agent. I could modify the hardware name to whatever I wanted.

Clicking on Default Policy shifted me to Configuration -> Policies where I could view the rules and decide which devices to apply it to. I could say "All Mobile Devices" or specify individual devices. I decided I wanted to apply a different policy to my laptop, so I switched to Configuration -> Policy Settings to define whitelists, blacklists and other settings, and to Configuration -> Block Page Settings to create the error message that users would see. I modified the Global Block List under Configuration -> Policy Settings -> Domain Lists to block the Internet Movie Database (IMDB.com) and Twitter. It took me a few tries to realize I had to enter in the URL without http://. I wish there had been some messaging on the screen to explain the proper format. ?Next: Applying Configuration Settings in Umbrella

NEW YORK (AP) ? Netflix Inc. is facing scrutiny from government regulators for a Facebook post by its CEO in July that may have boosted the online video company's stock price.

Neflix said Thursday that the Securities and Exchange Commission informed it that its staff is recommending civil action be brought against the company and CEO Reed Hastings. The reason: Hastings' July 3 post in which he said Netflix's online video viewing "exceeded 1 billion hours for the first time ever in June."

The SEC says posting on Facebook doesn't amount to fair public disclosure of information that is material to investors.

Shares in Netflix, which is based in Los Gatos, Calif., rose more than 6 percent on the day of Hastings' Facebook post. On the first day of trading following the July 4 holiday, its shares rose another 13 percent.

Hastings used Facebook again Thursday to comment on the investigation, which he called a "fascinating social media story." He argued that the information was not material to the stock price, had been disclosed and reported on earlier and that because he had 200,000 followers at the time, it was widely disseminated.

Hastings has been on the board of directors of Facebook Inc. since June 2011 and as of Nov. 14 owned 72,639 Facebook shares.

"We think posting to over 200,000 people is very public, especially because many of my subscribers are reporters and bloggers," he said in his post Thursday.

The SEC says Hastings' July post contained material investor information that must be disclosed in a regulatory filing or news release.

But Hastings said similar information was disclosed on the company blog in June.

On June 4, the blog states that Netflix's online customers were "enjoying nearly a billion hours per month" of streaming video. That announcement also was not put in a press release or an SEC filing.

It's not the first time a CEO from an Internet company has run into trouble with securities authorities for promoting their company through digital means.

In August 2011, Groupon Inc. CEO Andrew Mason got in hot water for sending a long email to thousands of employees explaining "why I'm so excited" about the company's then-upcoming initial public offering of stock, including a discussion of the company's use of controversial financial metrics.

Mason's email went out after the company had already filed IPO papers with the SEC, after which executives are not allowed to further promote the stock to investors. That episode was resolved and Groupon stock began trading publicly on Nov. 4, 2011.

Netflix shares rose $2.80, or 3.4 percent, to $86.17 on Thursday, a day after the company announced a multi-year licensing deal with Disney. The stock fell $1.06, or 1.2 percent, to $85.11 in after-hours trading.
