Messenger For iPad, One More Thing Facebook Could Be Unveiling On Tuesday

Take a look at that ?reach friends wherever they are now? image to the left. What?s missing between the iPhone and the laptop? Ding ding ding! You?re right! A tablet.

Okay, I?m sure it was obvious. In fact, many of you may have already assumed that Facebook has a version of its Messenger for iPad. Well it doesn?t, and seeing as though it took the company quite awhile to launch Facebook for iPad, the lag comes as no surprise.

This graphic might have to change next Tuesday, when Facebook is holding an event for press to ?come and see what [they're] building.? While my colleagues are hearing that this ?what [they're] building? is a ?big deal? as in a ?phone? or a slew of ads and other improvements, I?m hearing that one of the products that could be announced is Messenger for iPad.

Specifically I?m hearing that Messenger for iPad, replete with all the Messenger features we?ve come to love like emoticons, photosharing, read receipts, location tagging, group messaging and the new voice recorded messaging feature, is ready for the public eye. And basically, it?s what exists on the iPhone, but in a bigger format.

According to one source, the app is ?totally? ready to launch on Tuesday, and if the event is indeed?a series of mobile product announcements, it could ?totally? fit in conceptually. Other points that back this up: We?ve head that Messenger head Peter Deng was ?cranking? a couple of days ago and Facebook partner Microsoft is killing its Messenger service exactly a month after whatever it is is being announced.

A fully fleshed-out Messenger for iPad, eventually including video chat, VoIP and voice messages, could be another Facebook attempt at killing your home phone.?The combination of cheap VoIP with Facebook?s social graph and distribution network could be enough to get people to cut back on their home phone plans and save their mobile minutes/data.

And??reaching friends wherever they are now? includes on the couch, watching HBO?s ?Girls? on their iPads. With voice and video,?Messenger for iPad could become the way you have Sunday afternoon conversations with family or distant friends.

Other Facebook apps that need to be extended to the iPad include Instagram and Poke. It could be that Facebook is rebuilding its apps in preparation for a revamp of its core product on mobile, and starting with Messenger. In any case, Messenger for iPad is coming soon, so whether it?s Tuesday or not, get ready to be Messaging in a bigger format. Go iPad or go home.

NASDAQ:FB

Facebook is the world?s largest social network, with over 1 billion monthly active users. Facebook was founded by Mark Zuckerberg in February 2004, initially as an exclusive network for Harvard students. It was a huge hit: in 2 weeks, half of the schools in the Boston area began demanding a Facebook network. Zuckerberg immediately recruited his friends Dustin Moskovitz, Chris Hughes, and Eduardo Saverin to help build Facebook, and within four months, Facebook added 30 more college networks. Cocoa Beach, New Smyrna Beach rank among top 10 beaches in Florida

Courtesy Visit North Carolina

Cocoa Beach in Brevard County and New Smyrna Beach in Volusia County both ranked among the top 10 beaches on USA Today?s list.

The unusally warm winter in Florida could send the snowbirds flocking south to the Sunshine State a little earlier this year.

That?s why USA Today put together a list of the top 10 beaches/beach towns in Florida, with the help of Florida International University professor Stephen P. Leatherman.

Luckily for Central Florida's hospitality and tourism industry, two nearby beaches made the cut.

Cocoa Beach in Brevard County and New Smyrna Beach in Volusia County both ranked among the top 10 beaches on USA Today?s list. The list says both beaches are known for surfing, and New Smyrna Beach still allows visitors to drive on the beach.

Animal Cloning Controversy

The FDA announced yesterday the products you get from cloned animals are just as safe as products from regular livestock.
But many who work with animals say it will still be a while before the products move to your local grocery stores.

It's the big question sweeping the country. Would you eat the meat or drink the milk from cloned animals?

"Not if I knew it, I don't think I would! If I knew it was from cloned animals," says Pauline King.

"I think that it would probably be more expensive than what we already have and I just don't think it's something I would care for," says Lois Vancleave.

Experts say the milk and meat from cloned animals could be on the market within 3 to 5 years, but some people say they disagree.

"As I see it its not going to get into the food chain anyways because of the cost of it," says Bowling Green resident, Jim Chaney.

Jim Chaney knows all about farming and says to clone a cow it can cost up to $20,000 dollars.

"You're not gonna sell a $20,000 animal for so much a pound to get into the food chain," says Chaney.

Tripp Covington is the manager at the Cattlemen's Livestock Market in Bowling Green. He says he has a close friend in the cloning business.

"I know its real popular in horses and also in bucking bulls and stuff of that nature," says Tripp Covington.

Like Chaney, he says the high cost of cloning animals makes it hard to turn around and sell it in the grocery store at such a low price.

"I think in concept it sounds good, but in actuality its gonna be too expensive to be on the grocery shelf anytime soon," says Covington.

And if and when it is, some shoppers say they'll eventually make the move.

"Things are changing I guess. Maybe well have to get used to these new changes, but it's gonna be hard to do," says Pauline King.

The FDA reviewed dozens of studies from around the world to determine that the milk and meat from cloned animals is just as safe as products from any other animal.

However, a survey conducted last year found that only 22 percent of U.S. consumers were in favor of animal cloning.

India, China military officials hold Annual Defence Dialogue

Top defence officials of India and China on Monday began two-day fifth Annual Defence Dialogue here to discuss a host of issues concerning the bilateral military ties including resumption of joint exercises this year.

The talks were being held between the tri-service Indian delegation headed by Defence SecretaryShashikant Sharma and Deputy Chief of Staff of People?s Liberation Army (PLA) Lt Gen Qi Jianghuo, according to Indian officials here.

The two sides are expected to work out a road map to resume joint military exercises this year.

The joint exercises aimed improving the ties between the two militaries were held at Kunming (China) in 2007 and Belgaum in 2008 and later stopped after China began issuing stapled visas to residents of Jammu and Kashmir since 2009.

Under this policy, China declined visa to Lt Gen B S Jaswal on the ground that he was commanding forces in the ?disputed and sensitive? region of Jammu and Kashmir, which lead to India halting its military ties with China.

Beijing subsequently rolled back the policy paving the way for resumption of military ties.

Also, the two countries established consultation and coordination mechanism to deal with border incidents arising out of the patrolling of the disputed areas and began consultations on maritime security issues as their navies are currently involved in countering pirate attacks in Gulf of Aden.

No 'Death Star' for US Military, White House Says

The planet-killing Death Star may have been the ultimate weapon for the Empire in the "Star Wars" films, but it has no place in the United States military today, a White House official said Friday (Jan. 11).

The statement, an official response a petition to begin building a real-life Death Star by 2016 on the White House's We the People website, said President Barack Obama's Administration cannot support building the science fiction weapon for several down-to-Earth reasons.

"The Administration shares your desire for job creation and a strong national defense, but a Death Star isn't on the horizon," wrote Paul Shawcross, chief of the Science and Space Branch at the White House's Office of Management and Budget.

The Death Star petition, posted in the November, was signed by 34,435 people and the White House has pledged to respond to any petitions that garner 25,000 signatures in 30 days.

Not the least of the hurdles for a real-life Death Star is the space construction costs, which Shawcross said has been estimated at $850 quadrillion (that's $850,000,000,000,000,000). The White House is trying to reduce the deficit, not expand it, he wrote.

Then there's the Death Star's planet-destroying warship nature.

"The Administration does not support blowing up planets," Shawcross wrote.

And of course, there's the fact that Luke Skywalker destroyed the first Death Star with a single X-wing fighter.

"Why would we spend countless taxpayer dollars on a Death Star with a fundamental flaw that could be exploited by a one-man starship?" Shawcross explained.

While there will be no moon-size Death Star in the U.S. military's arsenal by 2016, Saturn's real-life moon Mimas does look eerily similar to the fictional warship. [Saturn's'Death Star' Moon Mimas (Photos)]

Last year, astronomers with the agency's planet-hunting Kepler space telescope also announced that they found a real-life version of Tatooine, Luke's home planet with two suns. NASA also plans to send astronauts where no one has gone before ? an asteroid ? by 2025, and then take aim a manned trip to Mars in the 2030s.

And Shawcross also urged the public to go outside at night and look up.

"However, look carefully (here's how) and you'll notice something already floating in the sky ? that's no moon, it's a space station!" Shawcross wrote. "Yes, we already have a giant, football field-sized International Space Station in orbit around the Earth that's helping us learn how humans can live and thrive in space for long durations."

The?International Space Station ?is a $100 billion orbiting lab ??a deal compared to the Death Star ??and is currently home to a six-man crew representing the United States, Russia and Canada. Construction of the space station began in 1998 and today it is the largest manmade structure in space. It has the same living space as a five-bedroom house.

The space station can appear so bright to observers on Earth that at times it rivals Venus, the brightest planet in the night sky. Two American astronauts (of NASA), three Russian cosmonauts and a Canadian astronaut currently live on the station.

And Shawcross said there are other Star Wars technologies besides the Death Star that do have a place in today's society.

"We don't have a Death Star, but we do have floating robot assistants on the space station, a President who knows his way around a light saber and advanced (marshmallow) cannon, and the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency, which is supporting research on building Luke's [robotic] arm, floating droids, and quadruped walkers," Shawcross wrote.

"We are living in the future!" Shawcross wrote. "Enjoy it. Or better yet, help build it by pursuing a career in a science, technology, engineering or math-related field."

The Administration and NASA have both been working to spur interest in science, math, engineering and technology among students.

"If you do pursue a career in a science, technology, engineering or math-related field, the Force will be with us!" Shawcross concluded. "Remember, the Death Star's power to destroy a planet, or even a whole star system, is insignificant next to the power of the Force."

With the Death Star officially the table, there is another science fiction spaceship petition that could draw a White House response.

Last month, an engineer writing as BTE Dan launched a petition to build a real-life Starship Enterprise from the "Star Trek" TV series. So far, 19,234 have signed the petition, so it still has a ways to go to prompt a White House response.
