4 Tips For Finding the Right Internet Business For You

Article by Naz Daud

Have you considered the idea of having your own internet business, able to choose the hours you work, with your own business model, and be your own boss? Have you also decided not to take that step, because of worries and anxieties about the risks involved, the uncertainty, or even because of concerns which you may have regarding how to identify legitimate opportunities from the scams?

If so, then you are certainly not alone, and there is an increasing number of people who are now turning to internet technology to help create a better work life balance and distancing themselves from the increasing uncertainty of the workplace and job security. It seems that people now want to take charge of their own lives, their own careers and their own independent financial security.

Whilst it would certainly be misleading to suggest that there were no scams or untrustworthy internet business models and ideas available online, there are enough genuine, and proven ways of earning either a part time or full time income online to make it well worth a proper investigation if the idea appeals to you. If this sounds like you, then here are some basic pointers to ensure that whatever steps you take, and whatever decisions you make, you are more likely to emerge from the experience in a positive frame of mind.

1. Legitimacy. We?ve all seen those online business offers and adverts suggesting that the author made tens of thousands of dollars in the first week, is now a millionaire a few months on and generously giving all his money making secrets away for about fifty dollars a time.

The point to bear in mind is that if it sounds too good to be true, it almost certainly always is. Yes, the internet has spawned many millionaires, and yes, some people have made a fortune in a very short space of time. But when you consider the millions of people using the internet, this isn?t surprising. In all honesty, you have as much chance of making a few million dollars overnight through an online business as you do winning a state lottery.

If you start to read an internet business proposal or scheme, and you realise that most of the description centres on the single individual case of the person who started it, offering no guarantees or assurances of your success, then it may well be best to move on. The best, and most promising online business schemes and ideas tend to focus more on what is involved, what you will need to do, how the financial model works, and present realistic, rather than fantastic targets and expectations.

2. Support. If you find a few business ideas which sound interesting, drop a direct line to the owner. Unless you?re thinking of starting up your own completely independent, unique business yourself, without taking on board a basic model idea of franchise project already in place, then the chances are high that you?ll need to communicate with this person quite frequently in the first few days, weeks or perhaps even months. So email the person, and see what happens.

Do they reply? How quick is the response? Is it written personally, or just an automatic reply? Is the message written in a way which sounds pleasant, helpful, and supportive and actually seeks to answer your question? This can reveal a lot about the validity of the business model and the likelihood of your success with it.

3. Suitability. Another thing that you need to bear in mind is the nature of the business itself, and any opportunity to adapt or extend it in ways which suit you and your personality. It?s too easy to pick a web based or home based business opportunity based purely on its reliability, legitimacy or likely financial expectations. Since you could well be looking at the idea as being a long term career opportunity, you need to be honest with yourself about how you see this idea developing.

Are you an extrovert? You might prefer to look at online businesses which involve a great amount of service related work, communicating directly with consumers in various ways. Perhaps you are more of an introvert, and would prefer a business which sees you working in a much more private, solo fashion, focussing more on the product or service than on the communication with customers. Think about how you see yourself and the business in twelve months time. Is it possible to see yourself happy, progressing well and with a business which is both succeeding at the same time as providing you with fresh challenges and opportunities?

4. Research. One advantage of considering an online or internet business opportunity is that you will be in good company. There are thousands of people who have already taken the plunge, learnt from mistakes, discovered successes, and who are more than willing to share those with you. Sign up to forums and discussion boards where people can share these ideas and experiences, and don?t be afraid to ask people for advice, and listen to their responses.

Higgs boson real? We may know in a year

The long-sought Higgs boson, believed to have given shape to the universe after the Big Bang, will be found in the next 12 months or shown to be a chimera, heads of the three top physics research centers said on Thursday.

And the three scientists ? from Europe's CERN, the U.S. Fermilab and Japan's KEK ? also pronounced themselves skeptics on whether neutrino particles had broken accepted natural laws and traveled faster than the speed of light.

"I think by this time next year I will be able to bring you either the Higgs boson or the message that it doesn't exist," declared Rolf Heuer, director general of CERN whose Large Hadron Collider (LHC) is at the focus of the search.

He was echoed by KEK's Atsuto Suzuki and Pier Oddone of Fermilab, which last weekend shut off after 26 years its Tevatron accelerator, which has also been seeking the Higgs in the debris of billions of particle collisions.

The three were speaking at a joint news conference after a three-day gathering of leading physicists at CERN to discuss what accelerators might eventually be added to the research arsenal, either to complement or replace the LHC.

Oddone said analysis of the data gathered in the Tevatron, which for nearly a decade led the search, would be under analysis for several more months but at best could only now reveal where the Higgs was not hiding.

Existence of the particle as the agent which gave mass to the chaos of flying matter after the explosion 13.7 billion years ago and made possible formation of galaxies, stars and planets, was postulated some four decades ago.

Standard model
Peter Higgs, the British physicist whose name it bears, and other scientists who came up with the theory in parallel, placed it firmly within the Standard Model of how the cosmos works at its fundamental particle level.

But if it, and nothing else that could have fulfilled its role, is not found, said Heuer, then the evolving model ? which has underpinned research since 1905 when Albert Einstein published his special theory of relativity ? would collapse.

However, all three said they were confident that the Higgs would be found in the LHC, which was started up in March 2010 and is creating multibillions of mini-Big Bangs observed and analyzed by scientists around the globe.

"Whatever happens, the Standard Model does not just fall off the table," said Oddone. If there were no Higgs, then another mechanism producing the same effect ? without which life would have been unthinkable ? had to be operating.

But Heuer, Oddone and Suzuki agreed that finding that mechanism would take much longer and would have to wait until the vast LHC which runs under the Swiss-French border near Geneva, has its power doubled in 2014.

Whatever it may be, it may not fit into Einstein's concept of the workings of the universe, said Oddone. "But then in some sense we have moved already beyond Einstein," he added.

However, the three did not see an immediate challenge to the scientist and his assertion that nothing could travel faster than light from an experiment which two weeks ago reported tracking super-luminal neutrino particles.

The finding, which the physicists involved said had so amazed them that they were asking for other researchers to check it, has caused a major stir among scientists around the world.

"On that, I am a skeptic," said Heuer, although the neutrinos involved in the experiment were pumped from CERN 730 kms to a laboratory in Grand Sasso in Italy. Oddone and Suzuki also voiced doubts.

Both KEK and Fermilab will be involved in duplicating the experiment. Oddone said that although he hoped to have a result in the next six months, it may take much longer.

Freese, Cardinals force Game 5, beat Phillies 5-3 (AP)

ST. LOUIS ? Big swings by a slumping hitter, clutch innings by a journeyman pitcher. Suddenly, the St. Louis Cardinals are looking very dangerous.

As for the Philadelphia Phillies? Things have turned downright squirrelly.

David Freese, shut down by Phillies aces the first three games, became a hometown star Wednesday night. He homered, doubled and drove in four runs as the Cardinals defeated nemesis Roy Oswalt and forced a deciding fifth game in their NL playoff series by beating the favored Phillies 5-3.

"This is what you worked for," said Freese, a local prep star who came to the Cardinals in a trade for Jim Edmonds after the 2007 season. "Just to do this in front of the fans of St. Louis and a bunch of friends and family, it's amazing."

Center fielder Jon Jay made a sliding catch on Placido Polanco's soft fly for the final out, and was already pointing his index finger before he got to his feet.

"We're not looking at this like we're just happy to be here and it's David and Goliath," Cardinals slugger Lance Berkman said.

Now it's back to Philadelphia for Game 5 on Friday night. Roy Halladay, who won the opener for the Phillies, will face St. Louis ace Chris Carpenter ? they played together in Toronto for five years.

"They're good friends and old teammates, and Carp was really chomping at the bit for this opportunity to pitch against Roy on full rest in a huge Game 5," Cardinals outfielder Matt Holliday said. "It should be quite a battle and then it'll be fun to watch two great competitors go head to head and two great teams get after it."

Phillies manager Charlie Manuel agreed.

"Might be fitting that it goes down to the fifth game," he said. "It's up to us to go get it. It's sitting right there for us. We've got our ace going, and we're at home, and so everything is sitting right there."

The 102-win Phillies were picked by many to win it all. But first they must dispose of the wild-card Cardinals, who clinched a playoff spot on the last day of the season and have gotten the best of two members of the Phils' star-studded rotation.

An omen, maybe: Right after Oswalt threw a pitch in the fifth, a squirrel darted across the plate.

Oswalt argued, unsuccessfully, that the creature's dash had distracted him on a pitch called a ball.

"I didn't want to stop in the middle of my motion, so I threw it," Oswalt said. "I was wondering what size of animal it needed to be for it not to be a pitch."

Manuel argued, to no avail.

"Of course, being from the South and being a squirrel hunter, if I had a gun there, might have did something," Manuel said. "I'm a pretty good shot."

Albert Pujols was hitless in four at-bats in what could have been his final home game with the Cardinals. He received thunderous cheers every trip to the plate from a standing room crowd of 47,071, second-largest at 6-year-old Busch Stadium.

Pujols made his presence known on defense, catching Chase Utley going for an extra base in the sixth. Utley drew a leadoff walk and kept running on Hunter Pence's grounder to short, but Pujols alertly jumped off first base to catch the throw and made a sharp relay to third for the out.

"This is obviously the playoffs, but that's a play I can make in the regular season, too," Pujols said. "If I would have stayed on the bag, it was going to be tough to get the runner at third. Obviously, that killed the rally right there."

Edwin Jackson recovered from a rocky beginning to win his first playoff start. After giving up two runs on his first five pitches, he wound up throwing six solid innings. Jason Motte worked a perfect ninth for his second save of the series.

Phillies cleanup hitter Ryan Howard, like Freese a St. Louis product, was 0 for 4 with three strikeouts. He is 0 for 8 the last two games with five strikeouts and has hit only one ball out of the infield.

"I think I've been a little bit anxious trying to go up and trying to make things happen instead of letting things happen," Howard said. "Right now I'm just kind of jumping, so just try to recognize pitches better."

Oswalt had been 5-0 with a 3.25 ERA in 10 previous postseason starts, the biggest closing out old Busch Stadium and the Cardinals in 2005 to get Houston to its first World Series. The right-hander also worked seven shutout innings against St. Louis in the Phillies' NL East division clincher in mid-September.

"It's good to get some early runs, for sure," Oswalt said. "I felt pretty comfortable after that. Just two bad pitches."

The biggest jolts for the Cardinals came from their seventh-place hitter. Freese was 2 for 12 the first three games with one RBI before punishing the fourth of the Phillies' aces.

Freese's two-run double down the third-base line in the fourth put St. Louis up 3-2. His two-run homer to straightaway center in the sixth whipped the crowd into a towel-waving frenzy.

Oswalt walked Berkman and hit Holliday, making his first start of the series, to start the fourth. Pence made a fine running catch on the right field warning track to rob Yadier Molina of extra bases, but Freese jumped on a hanging curveball with a drive down the left-field line.

Holliday singled with one out in the sixth and Freese hit a 1-0 pitch to the pasture in straightaway center, not far from where a squirrel made an early appearance, for a three-run cushion. A squirrel also interrupted play in the fifth, racing across the plate an instant after Oswalt's pitch to Skip Schumaker passed for a ball.

Oswalt argued with plate umpire Angel Hernandez, asking for no pitch. On the next, Schumaker flied out.

In Game 3 Tuesday, a squirrel was seen scampering in foul territory along the third base line.

Five pitches into the game, the Phillies had a 2-0 lead with an assist from the late-afternoon playing conditions.

Jay, standing in bright sunshine while shadows, took one step in on leadoff man Jimmy Rollins' drive on the first pitch of the game and retreated too late for a ball just over his glove that bounced over the wall for a ground-rule double.

Utley tripled just inside the first-base line three pitches later and Pence lined an RBI single on the next pitch.

NOTES: 2B Schumaker was taken out with a left hamstring cramp after a flyout in the fifth ? the same at-bat the squirrel made its appearance. After disrupting play, the squirrel scampered through the stands. Schumaker is 5 for 8 in the series. ... Rollins doubled and had an infield hit his first two trips and has nine hits in the series. He has 14 multihit games in the playoffs, passing Howard for most in franchise history. ... The Cardinals became the second team to reach 100 postseason victories, trailing only the Yankees' 220.

Advertising Your Auto Repair Shop With Custom Business Cards ...

One way to introduce your auto repair shop to your prospective clients is handing them a copy of your business cards. These prints contain the basic information of your business such as its name, location and contact information. These cards don?t act as reference for your business but also as means to market it. By creating your prints with unique and compelling design as well as including the benefits that your business offers, you?ve got persuasive advertising tools at hand. Here are some design ideas that you can use for successful marketing:

Business Card Design Ideas to Market Your Auto Repair Services

o Die-Cut ? Take your prints out of the norms and use die-cut cards instead of the traditional rectangular prints. For your auto repair business, you can use cards that are shaped like automobile with a mechanic working on it. For repair shops that have specializations, you can highlight this in your card prints. For example, you can have an auto-shaped prints designed with the engine bay being attended by a mechanic if you focus mainly on engine repairs.

o Folded ? These are also known as the tent cards or sometimes referred to as mini-brochures. The main advantage of these prints is that you have extra spaces to include vital information other than your company?s basic information, tagline and the benefits offered. You can list your major auto repair services at one panel and include a map on the other. You can also feature a customization project (if any) that you have done with a client?s car.

o Two-Sided ? Take advantage of the space on the other side of your cards. Instead of leaving it blank, you can add information about your auto repair shop. You can list the services that you offer or include a map that your clients can use to find your shop. If you offer body repairs, showcase this using a before and after photo of the vehicle. You can divide the space into two and show the before photo at the left side while the after photo at the right. Include a short caption about these photos.

o Plastic ? Should you want card prints that will not only stay in your client?s mind but also stay with them longer, you may opt for plastic cards. Compared to paper stocks, plastics are more durable. Also, these offer vibrant colors and designs when printed. You can even have die-cut prints for your auto repair shop.

o Magnetic ? Staying on top of your client?s minds is important if you want your small business to stay alive. So, why not remind them that you offer great auto repair services by handing them magnetic business cards. These can be stuck on refrigerator surfaces where your clients can see them many times a day and be reminded of the services you offer.

Don?t overlook the importance of using your cards as another means of marketing. Since they are your first contact to your prospective clients, it would be better to hit them with persuasive but subtle advertising. Include your auto repair shop?s theme and benefits in your cards and use the ideas above to maximize on your business card marketing. Make your prints stand out ? get people to notice your business.

Energy loans official leaves in wake of Solyndra (Reuters)

WASHINGTON (Reuters) ? The Obama administration said on Thursday its top energy loans official was stepping down, following a widening probe into the embarrassing collapse of a solar panel company that got $535 million in federal support.

Jonathan Silver, a venture capitalist who had also worked for the Clinton administration, was leaving because the loan program had allocated all its funding, Energy Secretary Steven Chu said.

Silver's resignation comes, however, as Republicans in Congress probe the White House's role in backing government loans given to Solyndra, a California solar panel maker, in 2009.

Solyndra filed for bankruptcy in August, and is under investigation by the FBI.

President Barack Obama, who spoke at a news conference before Silver's resignation was announced, defended the Energy Department's handling of the loans program and said the government should not back down from its support for clean energy.

Silver joined the Energy Department after the Solyndra guarantee was awarded, but he was in charge in February when the government agreed to restructure the debt as the company ran out of cash.

In that restructuring, some $75 million in private investment was ranked ahead of the government in the event of bankruptcy. That private fund was backed by a prominent Obama fundraiser.

Silver, under grilling by House of Representatives Republicans last month in a hearing, told them the decision was carefully weighed by lawyers and analysts.

"So you're saying no one should be fired?" asked Cliff Stearns, the lawmaker leading the probe.

"I'm saying that we are doing the best job we know how to do," Silver said.

Silver's resignation "does not solve the problem," Stearns and Energy and Commerce Committee Chairman Fred Upton said in a statement, vowing to continue their investigation.

Silver did not return a phone call to his home on Thursday evening.

POLITICAL, FINANCIAL OPERATIVE

Silver served as an adviser to commerce, interior and treasury secretaries in previous administrations.

Before his stint with the Energy Department, he founded Core Capital Partners, a venture capital fund that invested in alternative energy technology. He had also worked for the hedge fund Tiger Management.

When he joined the Energy Department, the loans office had only 35 employees, and he was charged with speeding up the process for evaluating applications and delivering loan guarantees to spur clean energy jobs -- a key part of the Obama administration's energy policy.

After Solyndra, the department approved 27 other loan guarantees for a total value of $16 billion. Nearly a dozen of those were approved in the last two weeks of September, right before funding for the program expired.

"Because of my absolute confidence in Jonathan and the outstanding work he has done, I would welcome his continued service at the department, but I completely understand the decision he has made," Chu said in a statement.

The moderate Third Way think tank said Silver would join the organization to work on energy policy issues.

"It's a shame that DOE is losing a tremendous asset," said Neil Auerbach, managing partner with Hudson Clean Energy Partners, who called Silver "a very competent executive who did a tremendous amount to organize the loan guarantee program."

Hudson Clean Energy Partners is a private equity firm that invests in clean energy companies, including solar panel maker SoloPower, the recipient of a DOE loan guarantee.

OBAMA DEFENDS LOAN PROGRAM

Obama said on Thursday the program, created by Congress during the George W. Bush administration, was necessary to help the United States remain competitive in the clean energy sector that has become dominated by China and Europe.

"If we are going to be able to compete in the 21st century, then we've got to dominate cutting-edge technologies, we've got to dominate cutting-edge manufacturing," Obama said.

The fall of one company should not discredit the entire program, Obama said, noting decisions on the loan were made "on merit."

"We knew from the start, it was going to entail some risks," he said. "There were going to be some companies that did not work out. Solyndra was one of them."

Obama said the United States could not afford to back down from supporting clean energy, when China and other countries are strongly backing alternative energy.

"I'm not going to cave to the competition when they are heavily subsidizing all these industries," Obama said.

Las Vegas Wayne Newton attraction to get bigger

Wayne Newton's proposed tourist wonderland in Las Vegas is devoting more space to his collection of celebrity keepsakes, including Nat King Cole's watch, a Frank Sinatra champagne glass and a Johnny Cash guitar.

  1. Don't miss these Travel stories

    1. America's most beautiful neighborhoods

Eye-catching design and green spaces matter, but the most appealing neighborhoods are also enriched by a welcoming community spirit.

Revised building plans submitted last month show a Las Vegas company turning Newton's home into a sprawling tourist playground is expanding a museum space devoted to the singer's favorite memorabilia. A theater where he is expected to perform is also getting beefed up.

When Newton isn't on stage, the 71,187-square-foot movie house will run a documentary about his life.

A Newton-themed car wash will also be larger than originally planned to accommodate tour buses. The expansions mean the proposed zoo and car museum will be slightly smaller, according to building plans obtained by The Associated Press.

Newton received permission last year to turn his lavish home into a tourist venue after a bruising battle in which his neighbors said they didn't want tour buses invading the largely residential neighborhood where Newton built his 10,000-square-foot home decades ago.

The plans call for opening to the public Newton's Casa de Shenandoah estate, with its South African penguins, sweeping crystal staircases and an antique-filled living room gilded in gold.

The museum, theater, visitors' center and other attractions were being added to the property. The project appeared well under way Sunday, as bits of newly-constructed buildings jutted up behind the 10-foot-tall walls that shield his property from a nearby bustling road.

The 40-acre estate also features Arabian horses, Impressionist paintings by Pierre-Auguste Renoir and 17th-century antiques collected from European castles. An office to the right of his living room houses mementoes collected during his 50-plus years in show business.

Some of the keepsakes were gifts from the mentors and friends who helped make Newton famous, including Sinatra, Elvis Presley, Bobby Darin and Jack Benny.

Newton, his wife and their daughter are expected to move into a smaller house located on the property, ceding the main house to the public.

Newton has said the tourist attraction will be both a showcase for his collections and a tribute to some of the performers that made Las Vegas a celebrity haven. The revamped estate is expected to employ more than 400 people at a time when unemployment in Nevada is above 13 percent, the highest rate in the nation.

Newton's high-pitched voice made him a Las Vegas headliner decades ago. He became internationally known for his hits "Daddy Don't You Walk So Fast," "Red Roses for a Blue Lady," and his signature song "Danke Schoen."

A spokesman for CSD LLC, the company building the attraction, did not immediately respond to a request for comment Monday. The project was originally expected to open late this year, but it appeared the grand opening was pushed back.

Determining A Lasting Relationship Through ... - Street Photography

Is sun sign astrological compatibility enough?

Nowadays everyone who knows about their Sun signs as well as its matches, we all know how can a Scorpio be appropriate to a Cancer, whereas how an Aries is appropriate to a Gemini etc. People make judgments about relationships based on the sun sign. What people forget is that this sign exhibits only the fundamental personality of an individual, which can be highly generalized.? All the nuances of the person?s personality can?t be known using this sign of the individual. The moon sign depicts the feelings of the individual; while the mercury describes the connection as well as the Venus define certain facets of relationships. Pluto describes the sexuality of an individual, such as a person with Scorpio in Pluto has amorous sexuality and many more.

Instances:

For example, we all know that people who have Gemini sign are usually chirpy and talkative, however I bet you?ll find Gemini?s who are a bit refined and quiet. Have you any idea why this takes place? Is astrology incorrect? Definitely not, it may be that the person may have other planets in water or earth signs. For instance, the mercury planet could be in a water sign like cancer, scorpio or pisces. Mercury planet defines the aspect of communication for the individual. Which means your generalized perspective of sun sign breaks on these circumstances.

Generally, we might say that a Scorpio and Gemini pair does not work. However, if the Gemini person has substantial water and earth signs in various other planets or perhaps the Scorpio has many other planets of birth chart in air as well as fire signs, then this combination could be effective! If they have wonderful positive conjunctions of the primary sign, Venus and mercury, it would be easy to say that unconditional love could grow between the two.? So if you were studying only the sun sign, you could have skipped probably the most soul mate partnership you might have ever had within this lifespan.

Remedy:

Thus anyone must not judge a certain relationship based simply on this sun sign. A complete birth chart analysis considering each planet and house along with their conjunction, trajectory and very similar other factors is needed. Moreover less significant aspects just like the Jojo and Lilith and many such things are also deeply taken into consideration.? Such analysis can be done only by the skilled astrologer.

If you truly intend to get serious about the relationship then you definitely should consider getting an astrological compatibility report, it helps you understand relationship conflicts, its forecasting, the positive and negative aspects of the partnership, even sexuality and many others.

Employers View of Your Resume | Business Learning Center

Employers View of Your Resume ImageBefore an employer agrees to an interview, they need to be convinced that you are a great candidate for the position. This is where your resume is an essential marketing tool. It demonstrates to an employer your skills, experience and writing ability. Make sure your spelling and grammar are impeccable.

You should be creative, bold and humorous in your Cover Letter, but always be yourself. Nothing impresses an employer more than your knowledge of them or the company. Try and key in on something that will make your cover letter stand out; find some pertinent information about the company. Of course you only want to focus on the positive.

Employers use the resume process to narrow their selection. They will choose the best of the best as perceived by what is in your resume. Your resume is your only initial sales tool to impress the employer enough to give you an interview. As the bad clich? goes ? You can only make a first impression once.

It?s important that your resume be as strong and positive as possible. A poorly organized and haphazardly written resume demonstrates to the employer that you are not serious about yourself, and if you are not serious about yourself, you are probably not going to be an asset to the company.
The questions that are going through the minds of employer are:

? Can you solve problems?
? What are your strengths / weaknesses?
? What are the benefits of hiring you over someone else?
? How will you fit into the company?
? Will you have a strong commitment to your job?
? How independent are you / can you be a team player?
? Are you a fast learner?

Don?t forget to do your homework about the company, its history, its goals, products, etc. You can apply this information and dramatically stand out with a creative cover letter! Find information about the company by reading the company?s website, brochures, do a Google search, and look at competitors. There?s tons of good information out there if you look.

If you submit a boilerplate cover letter and boring resume, you find yourself at the bottom of the resume pile.

Paintings by Iva Gueorguieva | Art Review | Gambit New Orleans ...

Sometimes you don't know where you've been until you see it receding in a rearview mirror. When the 21st century began, the usual postmodern tropes of the previous century still applied. A decade later, "postmodern" is a word that is seldom heard in reference to art or architecture. There even seems to be an unheralded revival of classical modernism, with new building designs that look positively 1965 (like the new University Medical Center), and in visual art there has been a quiet reprise of abstraction that evokes 1950s action painting, even as the best examples look relatively fresh today. Iva Gueorguieva's new paintings are darkly passionate in ways that recall the existentialist intensity of America's mid-20th century painters, poets and musicians ? at first glance you can almost hear Charlie Parker, John Coltrane or even Allen Ginsberg reciting riffs from Howl: "I saw the best minds of my generation destroyed by madness, starving hysterical naked ..." in a miasma of espresso, pot and cigarette smoke.

??But that was then, so who is this woman? Bulgarian-born and Philadelphia-educated, Gueorguieva lived in New Orleans for three years and, seemingly on a whim, moved to Los Angeles a month before Katrina struck. The works in this show are based on her New Orleans memories, and the best of them display similarly perfect timing expressed as prismatic cul-de-sacs and gestural slashes. Clinamen (pictured) is a masterpiece of swirling vortexes and painterly mini-tornadoes with controlled explosions like fireworks in a labyrinth. The name refers to the tendency of atoms to swerve, as predicted by the classical Greek philosopher Epicurus in an eerie anticipation of Einstein and Heisenberg. Auto Extraction is a lyrical example of visionary abstraction that harks to the portentous point in the 1940s when the surrealism of Arshile Gorky and Roberto Matta morphed seemingly full-blown into abstract expressionism. Matta called it "morphologies," landscapes of the inner world, things felt more than seen. The look may be related, but Gueorguieva makes it lyrically her own. ? D. Eric Bookhardt
