The ASU vs. Arizona football game, for many years played on the Friday after Thanksgiving, returns to that spot on the 2012 Pac-12 calendar. | ASU's 2012 schedule

The Sun Devils and Wildcats will renew their football rivalry on Nov. 23 and it will be the final game of the regular season for both programs.

On the 2011 schedule, ASU hosted Arizona on the Saturday before Thanksgiving and then closed out the regular season with a home game vs. Cal. In 2010, ASU and Arizona played in Tucson on Thursday, Dec. 2.

The Pac-12 released its entire 2012 football schedule Wednesday afternoon and for the first time in conference history, every football game will be on live national television. On the Pac-12's website, the conference declares that the new TV deals with ESPN and Fox eliminate "regional distribution which was prevalent in the prior broadcast arrangements."

A total of 44 games will be carried on one of the ESPN channels, Fox and FX, another 34 will be shown on one of the new Pac-12 Networks. Eight Thursday and Friday games are also on deck. Dates during the first two weeks of the non-conference schedule are still being adjusted to accommodate television commitments, but the remainder of the schedule is set.

"The one thing we heard loud and clear from fans across the conference is they want to see their teams play every week," Pac-12 Commissioner Larry Scott said on the website. "Starting in 2012 fans can see all games throughout the country."

ASU opens the season Saturday, Sept. 1 at home vs. NAU. The next week, ASU hosts Illinois, then travels to Missouri the week after that. ASU's conference opener is at Sun Devil Stadium on Sept. 22 against Utah.

ASU has two Thursday night games: Oct. 11 at Colorado and Oct. 18 at home versus Oregon.

Strong winds torment much of Britain, 2 killed (AP)

LONDON ? Winds surpassing 100 miles per hour (160 kph) tormented parts of Britain on Tuesday, wreaking havoc with travel and killing two people.

The U.K. meteorological office reported extremely high winds in several parts of the country, leading to power outages, seaport closures and hazardous driving conditions. Winds were particularly high in Scotland and Northern Ireland, with Edinburgh reporting gusts of 102 mph (164 kph.)

A man in his 50s was killed by a falling tree as he sat in the driver's seat of a parked van in southern England, and a crew member on board a tanker was killed after his vessel was hit by a large wave off the English coast.

Edinburgh airport closed to incoming aircraft, and many departing flights also were canceled or delayed. Glasgow airport also said many of its flights were delayed or canceled.

Further south, flights to and from London's Heathrow and Gatwick airports also were disrupted, with many flights arriving hours late.

Most train services between London and Scotland were canceled and many companies suspended ferry traffic across the English Channel until high winds subside. Other ferry links also were temporarily closed.

Falling trees have caused widespread power outages along with numerous road closures. Many sections of Britain also were being pelted by heavy rain.

Bammer: Under a banyan tree, with Edison and Ford

Before I flew to southwest Florida for a brief Christmas vacation, I asked my brother-in-law, Jonathan Darby, to set aside some time to visit the Edison & Ford Winter Estates, essentially museums that are a short walk from the core downtown area of Fort Myers.

I was interested in learning more about the man who invented the phonograph, the lightbulb, the movie camera, the person who singlehandedly, or with a team of workers, laid the foundation for the technological revolution of the modern electric world. The holder of a world-record 1,093 patents, nearly 400 of them for electric light and power, he was more than the Steve Jobs or Bill Gates of his time.

As for Ford, as much as I admire the brightness of his inventive mind -- the A and T model cars -- and his development of new, mass production methods, I cannot say I was eager to know more. While generous to his workers, Ford was, after all, a noted union hater whose writings about race and anti-Semitism, "The International Jew," became a basis for Hitler's autobiography, "Mein Kampf" (My Struggle), which, unfortunately, still wields great influence among racists around the world.

So, no, I was not eager to learn more about Ford, and, as it turned out, there was little Ford history on display at the museum and his winter home.

True, Edison and Ford were friends, maintained homes just yards apart, and they and their families enjoyed exploring southwest Florida during trips to Fort Myers.

But, from

what I gathered during a two-hour visit to the estates on Christmas Eve, the two men -- driven by a fierce determination to invent or solve manufacturing problems -- may actually have been philosophically far apart in their personal lives and beliefs.

Consider the entrance to the Estates Museum's newest exhibit, "Movies, Music and Dance," which welcomed visitors with photos of and single quotations by the two men.

Ascribed to Edison: "Music, next to religion, is the mind's greatest solace and also its greatest inspiration. The history of the world shows that lofty aspirations find vent in music, and that music, in turn, helps to inspire such aspiration in others."

Ascribed to Ford, who, by the way, loved to dance and play the fiddle: "I am not thinking so much of teaching children to dance, but of teaching children courtesy and conduct that goes with dancing."

I think I understood Ford's point and I have no real fault with it, but, still, I couldn't help but notice the men's different approaches to the fine and lively arts, and Ford struck me as a little stiff.

Entering the museum, the front of which is graced with the largest banyan tree in North America, shoots from its branches hanging down and rooted, I learned that Edison was nearly stone deaf. In early moving images, it was plain to see that the aging, white-haired super inventor leaned forward to hear what others were saying. There was an early phonograph, framed by small pieces of wood, a corner of which indented with bite marks, a way for Edison to feel the vibrations and, thus, "hear" the music through his jawbone.

His chrome kitchen sandwich grill, marketed in 1927 but discontinued in 1934, during the height of the Great Depression, looked like a forerunner to the George Foreman Grill. Edison considered the Embossing Translating Telegraph to be "the father of the phonograph," the latter, understandably, his favorite invention. I saw a photo of him with an early electric car, a 1913 model. His first patent? The vote recorder, about 1870.

He is considered "the father of organized research," a leader of groups working together doing different tasks to produce a product. He envisioned the value of solar energy, saying, in 1931, the year he died, "I'd put my money on the sun and solar energy."

Edison: a tireless tinkerer and thinker, for sure.

The Buccaneers and Rams fired their coaches on Monday, increasing to five the number of top vacancies. The Rams' vice president and chief operating officer, Kevin Demoff, happens to be the son of Fisher's agent, Marvin Demoff.

Fisher coached the Titans franchise for 17 years and led Tennessee to the 2000 Super Bowl.

Tortured Afghan girl to be treated in India

Updated January 03, 2012 08:23:48

An Afghan child bride who says she was tortured by her mother-in-law and locked in a toilet for six months will be sent to India for medical treatment, the government in Kabul said on Monday.

Sahar Gul, 15, was beaten, had her fingernails pulled out and was burned with cigarettes after she defied her in-laws who tried to force her into prostitution. She was left barely able to speak after her ordeal.

The girl, who was found in the basement of her husband's house in the north-east Baghlan province late last month, had been sold by her brother to her husband about seven months ago for $5,000.

Her family, from the neighbouring province of Badakhshan, had reported her disappearance to the police after being denied access to the home.

"The government is sending her to India for further treatment. She will be treated for her wounds," Afghan interior ministry spokesman Sediq Sediqui said.

"Her mother-in-law and sister-in-law have been arrested, the police are after her husband and father-in-law who are at large, they will be arrested soon."

Women continue to suffer in Afghanistan despite billions of dollars of international aid which has poured into the country during the decade-long war.

President Hamid Karzai's office said in a statement that the interior ministry had launched an investigation into the "tortures and violence against Sahar Gul".

"The president, in raising this issue to the national security council meeting, assigned the deputy interior minister to arrest the culprits as soon as possible and bring them to justice", the statement said.

The teenager had previously told Afghan health minister Dr Suraya Dalil from a hospital bed in Kabul, "for several months I was locked up in toilet by my in-laws and particularly my mother-in-law".

"I was denied food and water. I was tortured and beaten," she said.

The Afghan Independent Human Rights Commission logged 1,026 cases of violence against women in the second quarter of 2011 compared with 2,700 cases for the whole of 2010.

And according to figures in an Oxfam report in October, 87 per cent of Afghan women report having experienced physical, sexual or psychological violence or forced marriage.

A year of oops: five big political gaffes of 2011

There?s nothing like a presidential campaign cycle to bring out big political gaffes ? at times injecting doubt about candidates, but also offering some much-needed comic relief and glimpses of humanity. 2011 had some doozies, and some of the most memorable actually weren?t on the campaign trail.

GOP presidential candidate Michele Bachmann, who said the ?shot heard round the world? was fired in New Hampshire (correct answer: Massachusetts), nailed the politicians? dilemma perfectly: "People can make mistakes, and I wish I could be perfect every time I say something, but I can't."

Here are five of the biggest political ?uh-ohs? of 2011:

- Patrik Jonsson,?Staff writer

In the digital age, sexual missteps no longer even have to be in person, as former Rep. Anthony Weiner (D) of New York proved with ?Weinergate? ? the tale of a suggestive Twitter photo that led to revelations of other indiscretions.

Mr. Weiner, a tough-talking Democrat who rarely met a camera he didn?t like, at first denied that he had tweeted the photo to a college student. Then, he indicated he could not say ?with certitude? whether or not the photo was of him. Finally the lawmaker, who is married, admitted to sending the picture and, almost anticlimactically, resigned.

Perhaps not coincidentally, @RepWeiner hasn?t tweeted since June 1, about two weeks before he announced his resignation. His last public message: ?On with Rachel tonight. Gonna talk about Trump eating pizza with a fork! #DudeYoureANewYorker!?
