Police kill armed eighth-grader in Texas school

Nancy Blanco and her husband Arturo Carreon comforted their two children, Ashley Carreon,12, and Josey Lynn Carreon,13, after being reunited with them at Dean Porter Park in Brownsville,Texas Wednesday, Jan. 4, 2012. The park is across the street from Cummings Middle School. A 15 year-old student was shot and killed by Brownsville police at the school after he was seen brandishing a weapon inside the school. BROWNSVILLE, Texas?Officers summoned to a locked-down Texas middle school on Wednesday after a student was seen brandishing a handgun in the hallways shot and killed the eighth-grader after he ignored their order to drop the weapon and instead pointed it at them, police said.

The Cummings Middle School student, who police did not immediately identify but whose godmother identified him as 15-year-old Jaime Gonzalez, was spotted holding the weapon in the school at about 8 a.m., shortly first period classes began, district officials said. School administrators quickly called police and ordered the lockdown.

As teachers locked their classroom doors and turned off the lights, some frightened students climbed under their desks for comfort. They could hear police charge down the hallway and shout "put down the gun." Then several shots, three of them, most students said.

The officers shot the boy after he pointed the gun at them, Brownsville police detective J.J. Trevino told The Associated Press. He was pronounced dead at a local hospital.

"It's still under investigation, as far as how he came about to bringing the weapon or if he encountered anybody or anything else," Trevino said. The district issued a statement backing the police version of events, and police scheduled a news conference for later Wednesday to discuss the case.

Norma Leticia Navarro, the boy's godmother, told The Associated Press she couldn't imagine why he would have brought a gun to school.

"Jaime was not a bad kid, and I wish I could ask him why he did that, why did you put yourself in that position?"

Still, she said she understood that police were doing their job, but she expressed frustration that a child was killed and wondered if something else could have been done.

"I'm not saying he was perfect or an angel, but he was a very giving person."

She said both of his parents work, and that his stepmother raised him from infancy and was very strict with him.

With police and district officials saying little about the shooting in its immediate aftermath, those details that did trickle out came mainly from students at the 750-pupil school.

Jade Rodriguez, an 11-year-old sixth-grader, said the ordeal was terrifying.

"I was nervous. I was under the desk," she said. Administrators said the school would be closed on Thursday but that students could attend classes at a nearby elementary school if they wished. Jade said she too afraid and would stay home.

Robert Valle, 13, said he heard police running and yelling "put the gun down" before the gunfire erupted.

Gina Rangel, 14, was in her first period class in the gym when the school went on lockdown.

She said friends who were closer to the shooting said the boy was near the cafeteria and had said he was going to kill everyone.

"I am worried (about the school's safety) because if this happened once, kids imitate," said her mother Irma Rangel.

As word of the shooting spread quickly through the city, which is on Texas' southern tip and is beset by spillover violence from Mexico's drug war, frantic parents rushed to reach their children.

Those who got their early on were able to retrieve their frightened children, but some who arrived later found the street outside the school lined with squad cars and blocked off. About two hours after the shooting, dozens of frustrated parents and relatives flooded out of the park pavilion without their children after school officials announced that all remaining children had been bused to a high school and could be picked up there.

Julie Tomalenas waited for an hour to pick up her 13-year-old sister before being told of the relocation.

"It was very stressful not knowing if she was OK, where she was, when we could see her again," Tomalenas said.

The lockdown was lifted about two hours after the shooting, but the students and employees were relocated while officers investigated at the school, Brown said.

The 'ultimate tribute' to Universal's shuttered Jaws ride (The Week)

New York ? Universal is scrapping a thrill ride based on the 1975 film to make room for less dusty amusements ? but not before fans try to preserve the old magic

The video: Universal Studios Orlando closed its storied Jaws ride on Jan. 2 after a two-decade run. The one-time cutting-edge shark-themed adventure and the surrounding Amity Village shops are being torn down for a new attraction ? reportedly an expansion of the popular Wizarding World of Harry Potter from Universal's neighboring Islands of Adventure park. For those who missed their chance to hop aboard Captain Jake's Amity Boat Tours, or are mourning the loss of a ride they cherished as children, fans at Inside the Magic created what they call the "ultimate tribute" to the Steven Spielberg?inspired ride: An elaborately filmed and edited video walk-through. (Watch it below.)

The reaction: The Jaws ride didn't have any "drops or mind-numbing speed," says James Plafke at?Geekosystem. But it "always felt more fun than, oh, I don't know, a slow tour through tiny, animatronic, ethnic children singing about togetherness." And even though theme parks are constantly "removing your favorite rides and foods, and destroying your childhood," I'm surprised and sad to see Jaws go. "Yes, the crown jewel of our civilization's robotic shark novelties" is lost forever,?says Cyriaque Lamar at?io9. So thanks, Inside the Magic, for helping to "soften the blow." Watch, and "remember the good times":

How fracking might have led to an Ohio earthquake

The 4.0 Ohio earthquake this weekend was a reminder that activities related to hydraulic fracturing, or 'fracking,' can cause seismic faults to shift if not carried out carefully.?

The link between "fracking"-related activities and earthquakes was thrown into stark relief over the weekend when a magnitude 4.0 quake struck Youngstown, Ohio ? typically not a hot bed of noticeable seismic activity. The quake triggered shaking reportedly felt as as far away as Buffalo, N.Y., and Toronto.

The temblor struck Dec. 31 and was the latest and strongest of 11 minor-to-light quakes that have hit the region since March. The epicenters are clustered around a wastewater injection well for a hydraulic fracturing operation.?

Understanding the potential effect hydraulic fracturing or related activities could have on local earthquake risks is one question some researchers hope to answer as they try to develop tools for communities.

Fracking allows energy companies to extract natural gas trapped in shale deposits deep underground. By injecting large quantities of pressurized fluids, drillers can break up the rock, releasing the gas for extraction.?

One way to dispose of the waste fluids from the process is to inject them back into porous rock formations deep underground. But if pressurized fluids find their way into faults, the fluids can act like a hydraulic jack, separating locked sections enough to allow them to slip.

The goal of researchers is to provide local or state officials with a means of taking a company's injection plan, plus a knowledge of the rock formation the company plans to use as a dump, and get a rough estimate of the largest quake such a process might trigger.

Seismologist Arthur McGarr says he and his colleagues from the US Geological Survey have worked up such a tool and now are trying to refine it.

The biggest environmental concern around fracking has been groundwater pollution. But Ohio has also had problems with seismic activity. The string of quakes last year prompted the state to ban drilling new wastewater-injection wells within five miles of the well suspected of triggering the temblors. At the state's request, the well itself was shut down Dec. 24.

Ohio is not alone. In July, the Arkansas Oil and Gas Commission banned wastewater-injection wells from a 1,150-square-mile area overlying key shale deposits because of increased earthquake activity linked to the wells.

At issue is the effect fluids injected at high pressure can have on faults. The billion-year-old "basement" rock that underlies much of the eastern US is laced with faults, notes John Armbruster, a seismologist with the Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory in Palisades, N.Y., who is gathering data on Youngstown's quivers.

In general, the concern is not about the fracking wells themselves. Fracking wells have been known to trigger tiny quakes, but they are typically too light to feel. These wells "are probably not going to be causing you any trouble" from an earthquake standpoint, he says. Any individual well injects fluid for only a day or two in order to release cooped-up gas.?

But some portion of that fluid is recovered for later disposal. In the case of the suspect well in Ohio, it was "disposing the fluid from hundreds of fracking wells," he adds.

The disposal well aimed to flush those fluids into a broad, deep sandstone formation, where the fluids could spread in all directions. But drillers reportedly overshot the formation and sank the well some 300 feet into the basement rock, where the faults lurk.

In working up its first cut at a seismic-hazard tool related to fluid injection, Dr. McGarr's team looked at seven events since the 1960s in the US and Europe where fluid injections triggered quakes with magnitudes up to 5.0.

The team uncovered a link between the volume of fluid injected and a quake's magnitude. Every time the volume of fluids doubles, the quake magnitude increases by about 0.4.

So far, the model says nothing about the likelihood of a quake occurring -- just a maximum potential magnitude, given the key assumptions. The team is working to incorporate other variables, such as stress levels on known faults.

[Editor's note: The headline has been changed to more accurately represent the potential for links between the Ohio earthquake and fracking-related activity in the area.]

Golf-No Hawaii start for Els who will launch 2012 season at home

    Wed Jan 4, 2012 8:10pm GMT

Jan 4 (Reuters) - For the first time in four years, Ernie Els will be a conspicuous absentee from the U.S. PGA Tour's season-opening events in Hawaii as he prepares instead to launch his 2012 campaign in his native South Africa.

Els failed to qualify for this week's winners-only Hyundai Tournament of Champions on the Hawaiian island of Maui and he has opted to skip the Sony Open which takes place on Oahu the following week.

A former winner of both PGA Tour events in Hawaii, the three-times major champion will make his season's debut at the European Tour's Volvo Golf Champions, to be played from Jan. 19-22 at Fancourt in George, South Africa.

"For me, the holiday period isn't quite over, but it will soon be time to grab my clubs and head to my first tournament of the year," Els wrote on his official website on Wednesday.

"Often in the past that would involve a long journey, especially when I started the season with tournaments in Hawaii. This year it's a different story."

Els, who has not triumphed on the PGA Tour since the 2010 Arnold Palmer Invitational, will enjoy home comforts during the Volvo Golf Champions as the event is being staged close to his South African base in Herold's Bay.

"(It) is literally just down the road, so I don't even have to pack my bags for that one," he said. "I can sleep in my own bed and still enjoy some good old home cooking.

"There are maybe only two or three tournaments a year where I can do that, so it's a real treat."

Els, who has been a globe-trotting playing professional since 1992, has never lost his sense of excitement and anticipation as a fresh season approaches.

"The first tournament of the new calendar year always feels like a new beginning," the smooth-swinging 42-year-old said. "I love it.

"And even after 20-plus years as a tournament professional, I still get excited about the prospect of a year's competitive golf ahead of me."

After the Volvo Golf Champions, Els will switch his focus to the PGA Tour where he plans to compete in the Jan. 26-29 Farmers Insurance Open in San Diego and the Feb. 16-19 Northern Trust Open in Los Angeles. Illinois DE Whitney Mercilus to enter NFL draft

CHAMPAIGN -- Illinois defensive end Whitney Mercilus will skip his senior season to enter the NFL draft, the university announced Tuesday morning. Mercilus tied the school record with?16 sacks and helped the Illini to a 7-6 record.

Mercilus will comment later Tuesday, when Illinois is also expected to announce the hiring of assistants to the staff under coach Tim Beckman.

Mercilus was named the Hendricks Award winner, an award that goes to the nation's top defensive end, after leading the country in sacks and forced fumbles with nine. He was a first-team All-America and first-team All-Big Ten. With such a hot season, the departure of Mercilus was expected, because his draft status may never be higher.

Before the Illini defeated UCLA 20-14 in the Kraft Fight Hunger Bowl in San Francisco on Saturday, he told people close to him there was little chance of his return. It leaves hybrid linebacker?Michael Buchanan as a key player for next season.

Coach Tim Beckman mentioned Buchanan as one of four juniors who would consider a move to the NFL, but Buchanan appeared set on returning next season during an interview prior to?the bowl game. He wants to gain 10 pounds and become a star on the defense, he said.

In a statement released by Mercilus, he wanted to "congratulate my teammates and coaches for a great win against UCLA in the Fight Hunger Bowl. It was a great feeling to get back to winning, especially with a defensive performance like we had.''

Then he thanked everyone involved with his development.

"With that said, after a lot of prayer and discussion with my family, I have decided the time is right for me to forgo my senior year and enter the 2012 NFL draft,'' he said in the statement. "I want to thank Coach (Ron) Zook, Coach (Vic) Koenning, Coach (Keith) Gilmore and the entire Illini staff for helping me get to this point. To the entire Illinois community ? students, professors, athletic department and fans ? thank you for all of your support during my time here in Champaign; these have been some of the best times of my life and I will never forget all that this university means to me.?

"Finally, thank you to my teammates ? without you guys, I would not be in the position to make this decision. I have faith that Illinois will rise to the top, and I will be there to support you.''

Mercilus tied Simeon Rice as the school record holder in sacks in a single season despite a weight room accident that took a portion of one finger last April.
