Mothers with postpartum depression are more likely to be in a violent relationship than moms without depression, and new mothers in abusive relationships are more likely to suffer postpartum depression, according to a new survey of women with infants.

"I think intuitively and clinically it's not surprising that there would be an overlap between depression and intimate partner violence," said Dr. Linda Chaudron, a psychiatry professor at the University of Rochester Medical Center, who was not involved in this study.

The results provide clinicians with some guidance for screening women who show signs of postpartum depression or a violent relationship.

"That is a big message that we want to send, that if pediatricians have started screening for maybe one of these two and they detect one, they should be screening for the other," said Dr. Barry Solomon, a pediatrics professor at John's Hopkins Children's Center, and the lead author of the study.

Previous research on the overlap between postpartum depression and domestic violence has typically come from researchers that focus on the mothers' health.

But in recent years, pediatricians have increasingly adopted the practice of screening mothers for postpartum depression and domestic violence.

"It's come from growing evidence that mothers who are depressed or are in a relationship with violence, there are negative effects on children," Solomon told Reuters Health.

1 IN 14 IN VIOLENT RELATIONSHIP

Solomon and his colleagues took advantage of the frequent visits to the pediatrician that new moms make with their babies to explore how often violence in the home and depression co-occur.

In February, 2008 they started screening mothers with children under six months old who came to their clinic for healthy baby checkups.

Most of the women were African American and about one third of them were teenagers.

From the surveys that the moms filled out, the research team found that one out of four of the mothers appeared to have postpartum depression and one out of 14 was in a violent relationship.

The moms who screened positive for domestic violence were twice as likely to have postpartum depression.

More than 50 percent of women in violent relationships also screened positive for depression, compared to 22 percent of mothers who were not in violent relationships.

Similarly, women with postpartum depression were four times as likely to also screen positive for violence at home.

Four percent of women without depression and 16 percent of women with depression were in violent relationships.

TWO-WAY STREET?

The study did not determine whether one causes the other. Chaudron said it might go both ways.

"If you're depressed you can't as easily get out of a violent situation, and if you're in a violent relationship you're walking on eggshells and can become depressed," she told Reuters Health.

The study, published in the Journal of Pediatrics, also found that mothers with postpartum depression were more likely to bring their children to the emergency department more frequently.

It's not clear why, but Chaudron speculated that perhaps depressed mothers have more anxiety, which could bring them to the emergency department.

Chaudron said she is pleased to know the pediatric community is making an effort to study and be proactive about issues centered on the mother.

"I think that the focus is still on the health and development and well being of the child, but now we know that moms who are going through serious emotional difficulties and violence in the home affect the children. It affects the care we can give to them and their own emotional development," Solomon said.

The challenge to getting more pediatricians to screen for postpartum depression and domestic violence is what to do if a mom needs help.

Solomon said pediatricians need support from the adult psychiatric and social services communities so that they can offer resources if they suspect mothers are in need.

His clinic has brought on full time social work staff to work with mothers on the spot, for instance.

In practices that don't have such resources, they "have to reach out to their maternal health partners," he said. "We can't expect pediatricians to screen for intimate partner violence or postpartum depression without providing them resources and connections."

In this fast-paced world, mobile phones serve as the most effective means of communication. Cell phones help maintain a sense of connection and provide an antidote to the pressures and alienation of modern life, paradoxically at times being a means for it as well. However, these little gadgets are vulnerable to problems like cracking of screens, water damage etc. Some models tend to last longer than others do, but eventually, all of them need some kind of repair work. It becomes vital, in such cases, to take the assistance of skilled and experienced technicians, who have the necessary tools to repair just about any kind of cell phone problem.

As they say everything is big in Texas, small troubles for Texans, like a damaged cell phone cannot keep the Texas State Capital, i.e. Austin from slowing down, so if you are in Austin, you are well covered as there are some highly-experienced, authorized CPR cell phone repair centers in Austin, all listed at www.austincellrepair.com, that offer a wide range of cell phone repair and Game Console repair services, including water damage repair, broken LCD screen repair, Iphone and Blackberry repair etc. Another important service they provide is cell phone Flashing/ Unlocking, which enables people to use their cell phones on different cell phone carriers than what the carriers intend them for. GSM phones can be unlocked for use with other GSM networks like AT&T T-Mobile Simple Mobile, etc while CDMA phones from Verizon, Sprint, Alltel, can be programmed to work with inexpensive carriers like Cricket and Metro PCS, all done while keeping the same phone. This not only saves the user from buying a brand new phone for every new cell phone carrier, but also saves them from the hassle of replacing a fully functional phone. Users, who are not located near one of the service locations of these cell phone repair companies, can mail-in their phones by following simple mail-in instructions. Such eminent cell phone repair companies have the requisite equipment and the know-how to fix all kinds of cell phone problems in a fast, efficient and cost-effective way. They also offer warranties on the work they perform, being a multi-carrier retail chain they have many alternatives if you decide not to fix your phone, you can look their services up on their website at http://www.snipwire.com

Everyone at some point runs into a snag when these tiny, fragile gadgets, computers, game consoles and mobile devices undergo a problem. The only option is to purchase a new device or a cell phone by shelling out a substantial amount of money. Admittedly, no one has the disposable income to buy a new cell phone every time the existing one undergoes some damage. It is this and many more such reasons that sensible mobile phone users take the assistance from knowledgeable and experienced cell phone repair centers, to fix or service their cell phones and save considerable money.

So if you encounter a problem with your mobile phone like, cracked screen, broken antenna, water damage, broken or sticky keyboard, broken flip phone, lost contact list, missing data, carrier locked cell phone, or any other incomprehensible difficulty, get in touch with a capable cell phone repair center, like CPR- Austin Cell Phone Repair that can provide a quality and trustworthy service, and present you with a fixed device, right while you wait, in most cases.

DeAndre Brackensick Cries, Aims to Make American Idol Fans Smile

Oh, DeAndre Brackensick. You're making this way too easy.

The high-pitched American Idol finalist covered a somewhat random Eric Benet track last night, "Sometimes I Cry," giving critics far too obvious of an avenue to mock the contestant. As in: yes, DeAndre, sometimes you make us cry, especially when you rely so heavily on a falsetto that pierces our ear drums.

The judges were on board with the performance, however, giving Brackensick a standing ovation. (Note to Randy, Steven and J. Lo: you stood up and applauded for five finalists this week. Five! Out of nine! Pick and choose your spots a bit more carefully or else a standing O won't exactly be considered special any longer.)

Will DeAndre escape the bottom three this week? Will he pack his bags and head home? It will all be based on this audition:

Clearly, we didn't love Brackensick. But here's a look at our three favorite performances from the top 9:

  1. Phillip Phillips telling us it's "Still Rainin."
  2. Elise Testone showing a "Whole Lotta Love."
  3. Joshua Ledet belting out a heartfelt "Without You."

Debt | Euro Zone Debt Crisis Far From Over ... - Freedom Debt Relief

March 29, 2012 ? 12:14 am

By Robin Emmott

BRUSSELS (Reuters) ? The euro zone?s public debt crisis is not over despite calmer financial markets this year, the OECD said on Tuesday, with a warning that the bloc?s banks remain weak, debt levels are still rising and fiscal targets are far from assured.

As the euro zone heads into its second slump in just three years, the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) said the 17-nation area needed ambitious economic reforms and there could be no room for complacency.

?Market confidence in euro area sovereign debt is fragile,? the Paris-based economic think tank said in a report on the state of the euro zone?s health. ?The outlook for growth is unusually uncertain and depends critically on the resolution of the sovereign debt crisis,? it said.

In a departure from forecasts by the International Monetary Fund and the European Commission, the OECD sees 0.2 percent growth in the bloc in 2012, rather than an outright contraction.

While international economists are divided over just how deep any downturn will be this year, most agree that weak business confidence and budget austerity is eating into the purchasing power of European households, driving up unemployment and leaving Asian and U.S. demand holding the key to growth.

Two years into the euro zone?s sovereign debt saga, EU leaders? commitment to fiscal discipline and the European Central Bank?s stimulus of 1 trillion euros to banks has cooled the panic in money markets late last year that drove Italian and Spanish bond yields to near unsustainable levels.

Euro zone government debt levels are likely to reach 91 percent of economic output next year, even as the bloc enacts some of the deepest austerity programmes in half a century, and well above the European Union limits for a healthy economy.

?MOTHER OF ALL FIREWALLS?

The OECD, which tracks industrialised economies to promote growth, cautioned that deficit-cutting goals needed to strike a balance with what was realistic and politically possible, or the EU?s enforcement systems could lose credibility.

The euro zone must ?set out more credible and detailed medium-term budgetary plans?, the OECD said. The crisis may have increased policymakers? determination to impose austerity, but recessions this year in southern European countries may make it harder for euro zone leaders and the European Commission to impose sanctions on member states should they miss targets.

Spain?s Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy won a more relaxed 2012 deficit goal at a meeting of euro zone finance ministers earlier in March, but a looming recession will make even that a stretch.

Strengthening banks is also critical to any resolution of the crisis, while the bloc must agree a big enough financial firewall to stand behind the indebted economies of Italy and Spain, should they be cut off from markets, the OECD said.

Euro zone finance ministers are expected to address both issues at a meeting in Copenhagen on Friday. German Chancellor Angela Merkel signalled for the first time on Monday that she was prepared to consider boosting the firewall?s resources.

?Immediate action is required to ensure sufficient and large-scale availability of a firewall to stop the dynamics of runs against solvent sovereigns,? the OECD said.

OECD chief Angel Gurria has called for ?the mother of all firewalls? ? some 1 trillion euros ? but finance ministers look more likely to agree to a level nearer 700 billion euros.

'American Idol' Conundrum: Why Are Heejun And DeAndre Still In?

'DeAndre is a hot dude who appeals to the female demographic,' 'Idol' blogger explains, while Han is backed by Vote for the Worst website.
By Gil Kaufman

There's almost always a singer on each season of "American Idol" who makes it way deeper into the competition than expected. But season 11 of the show has seen two unlikely finalists — Heejun Han and DeAndre Brackensick — stumble into the top 9 and onto this summer's cast tour despite a string of, respectively, jokey and lackluster performances that have drawn assorted raspberries from the judges and outright derision at times from music-industry icon and show mentor Jimmy Iovine.

Their resilience got MTV News wondering if perhaps they have a special magic that some of the other eliminated finalists haven't discovered yet. We spoke to some of our favorite "Idol" experts to take a look at the dynamic duo's social-network presence to try to figure out how they've done it.

For Brackensick, it doesn't appear to be thanks to Twitter, where he had just 31,660 followers (dubbed "DreDreamers") as of Tuesday evening and spent most of his time thanking fans for their support or complaining about poor WiFi at the "Idol" mansion.

"DeAndre is a hot dude who appeals to the female demographic," said leading "Idol" blogger MJ Santilli of MJsbigblog about the strange allure of the singer with a sky-high voice and hair-commercial-ready curls. "He's sung well enough to give the impression that he's got potential. The 'Master Blaster' performance — which Jimmy and the judges loved — was enough to keep him going for a week or two more, but if he doesn't step it up, he's going out mid-pack, too."

Heejun's following on Twitter was a heftier 86,663 on Tuesday, putting him near the top of the social-networking heap among his fellow finalists. Not surprisingly for the yuk-loving singer, his interactions with fans are much sillier and more playful than most of the others, with a loose vibe that matches his onscreen persona, including lots of candid photos and suggestions that fans adopt the nickname "Hanimals."

He also has the dubious distinction of being the subject of this year's target on the Vote for the Worst website. "Finally, the man we were waiting for comes out to play," the site said in a banner promoting the vote. "Welcome to VFTW, Heejun. We love you. Here are lots of votes."

"Idol" expert Jim Cantiello said he gets Heejun's appeal. OK, he doesn't get it get it, but he can see how Han attracts attention by being a spectacle while everyone else is singing ballads — all the time. "His silliness supplies good .gifs for tumblr and easy fodder to tweet about," said the former MTV "Idol in 60 Seconds" host. "Trust me, just like Sanjaya, the first time he has a performance that provides zero water-cooler talk, he'll be dropped. Or as soon as it seems like powerhouse singers are in jeopardy, casual 'Idol' fans won't be as quick to call in a vote for the clown."

Cantiello suspects Han has another thing going for him as well, whether it was all part of his devious plan or not. "Heejun's got the whole bromance thing with Phil Phillips going on," Cantiello said of the buddy-comedy vibe between the joker and one of this year's leading male contenders. "So some of Phil's fans are automatically into Heejun, and they'll vote him through to keep seeing them be silly on TV together."

MJ agreed that Heejun is just good TV. Not only did he bring some unneeded extra drama to the Hollywood rounds by sparring with annoying Richie "Cowboy" Law, he's shown his vulnerable and sensitive side as well. "Up until now, viewers wanted him on their TVs and most definitely wanted him on the tour, where he is likely going to be super-entertaining," she said. "But now that he's beginning to knock off vocally gifted finalists like Erika [Van Pelt], watch the backlash begin. I don't think he's got more than a couple of weeks left in the competition."

How do the seven other finalists match up on the Twitter tote board? Pint-sized cute Hollie Cavanagh actually comes in below Brackensick with 30,792 "Holliepops," while faux-hawk flying singer Colton Dixon has one of the highest Twitter tallies at 92,458, putting him just ahead of foot-stomping Dave Matthews-alike Phillip Phillips, with 90,116 followers.

Solidly in the middle of the pack is leading female contender Jessica Sanchez with 69,825 followers, while country girl Skylar Laine rounds out the bottom with 33,122 "Skoutlaws," just ahead of gritty Elise Testone (23,969) and R&B crooner Joshua Ledet (23,618).

Why do you think Heejun and DeAndre have survived this long? Let us know in comments below!

Annan says Syria accepts peace plan

BEIRUT (Reuters) - Syria has accepted a U.N.-sponsored peace plan, international envoy Kofi Annan said on Tuesday, as troops loyal to President Bashar al-Assad raided rebel forces who have taken refuge across the border in Lebanon.

Assad made a rare foray into the heartland of Syria's year-old uprising, visiting a rebel stronghold in the city of Homs that his forces had overrun after weeks of shelling and gunfire, apparently to make the point that he can now tour the streets of the once bitterly fought-over district.

Syrian state television showed video of Assad, wearing an open-necked shirt with a blue suit, walking casually in the devastated streets of the Baba Amr district and talking to groups of supporters and troops in combat gear.

Baba Amr was an emblem of opposition and rebel army defiance until it was reclaimed by government forces early this month after 26 days of heavy bombardment which opposition activists said was totally indiscriminate.

"Life will return to normal in Baba Amr, better than it was before," Assad said.

Activists says hundreds of civilians and opponents of Assad were killed in Baba Amr in February by shelling and snipers.

"He thinks he won and scored a great victory," said opposition activist Saif Hurria, speaking by telephone from Homs. "He wants to show the world he defeated and put down a revolution. But ... it seems he can't even release the video until he has left Homs. That is not control"

Opposition supporter Abu Jaafar said Assad's appearance in Homs was "giving the green light to kill like this again".

Annan represents the United Nations and the Arab League. Through a spokesman he said Assad had accepted the basic terms of a peace plan which calls for national dialogue but does not hinge on him leaving office.

Western and Arab leaders are due to meet in Istanbul on April 1 to discuss a political transition, and the Arab League and Turkey were pressing various wings of the Syrian opposition to try to unite.

In a session on Monday, the People's Assembly of Syria called on Assad to postpone parliamentary elections set for May 7 to allow time for what it called the consolidation of comprehensive reforms and the outcome of a national dialogue.

Assad has used the army to crush protests against his 12-year rule but his Alawite Muslim minority and its allies still have substantial popular support in the country.

Annan had said on Monday that Assad's government could not resist the "winds of transformation", but it was too early to introduce any timeline for a peaceful solution.

He said Assad's acceptance of the peace plan was "an important initial step" but conceded he faced a "long and difficult task" in ending the fighting and said he could not set any timetable.

U.S. ambassador to Syria Robert Ford said in Washington that if would be unwise, from his experience, to take Assad at his word. "You want to see steps on the ground," he said.

Annan's plan calls for withdrawal of heavy weapons and troops from population centers, humanitarian assistance being allowed in unimpeded, release of prisoners, freedom of movement and access for journalists to go in and out, Annan said.

The United Nations estimates more than 9,000 people have been killed in Syria's upheaval over the past year, UN Middle East envoy Rovert Serry told the Security Council. Syrian authorities blame foreign-backed terrorists for the violence and say 3,000 soldiers and police have been killed.

VIOLENCE UNABATED

Opposition activists reported several civilian casualties in shooting late Monday and overnight in the cities of Idlib and Homs, in fighting between government forces and rebels.

Video posted on the internet by activists showed thick black smoke and blazing buildings in a district of Homs. There were wounded and bleeding men and women lying in a street.

Syrian troops advanced into north Lebanon, destroying farm buildings in pursuit of Syrian rebels, residents said. Lebanese security sources denied that the Syrian troops had stepped onto Lebanese territory.

The border is poorly marked. Incursions have been reported in the past months without triggering Lebanese protests.

Security appears to be fraying in many parts of Syria despite repeated army offensives to regain rebellious territory. Activists say the government is struggling to hold such areas for long, with rebels swiftly re-emerging, as they have in other parts of Homs.

In Turkey, Syrian rebel group leaders gathered to weigh how to unite their fractured movement and boost foreign backing for a year-old revolt.

The main opposition block voiced support for Annan's plan -- so long as it led to Assad's removal.

"A peaceful transition means that the regime needs to be changed. And that starts with the removal of the head of the state," said spokeswoman Basma Kodmani.

Western and Arab governments which would be glad to see Assad ousted are wary of what might replace the 40-year-old family dynasty and its ruthless but predictable police state.

Russia and China have shielded Assad from Security Council condemnation by vetoing two Western-backed resolutions over the bloodshed, but approved a Security Council statement this week endorsing Annan's mission.

Shifting from its initial unqualified backing of Damascus, Russia has given Annan's proposal its full backing and said it could be Assad's "last chance" to avoid a protracted and bloody civil war.

China's Wen told Annan that "the efforts to seek a solution to the Syrian crisis are at a critical juncture. We do believe that your mediation efforts will lead to progress in seeking a solution to the Syrian issue".

The opposition has so far rejected Assad's calls for dialogue saying it is too late. The crackdown has angered Arab countries including former allies Qatar and Saudi Arabia, which favor arming the rebels.

But Arab leaders due to meet in Baghdad on Thursday will support a Syrian-led transfer of power, Iraq's foreign minister Hoshiyar Zebari said on Monday.

"There has to be a political solution, fundamental constitutional and political changes for transfer of power in Syria but through a Syrian-led process," Zebari said. "We are not in a position to dictate to the Syrians what of kind of president, what kind of leader they should have."

The secret to avoiding skin cancer

March 27, 2012

I?m sure you?ve heard it said about a million times by now: The best way to avoid skin cancer is to stay out of the sun ? and don?t forget to slather on the sunscreen when you do dare to step outside.

But no matter how many times you hear it, it?s still not true.

Simply put, you don?t have to live like a vampire to avoid the deadliest form of skin cancer. In fact, the latest research shows that the best way to slash your melanoma risk has nothing to do with the sun at all.

It?s a simple vitamin ? and you might want to go check the label of your multi right now.

If the form of vitamin A used in yours is retinol, you?re golden ? because a new study finds that people who get this form of A have a 60 percent lower risk of melanoma. And those who got the most A of all ? 1,200 mcg a day ? were 74 percent less likely to suffer melanoma, according to the study in the Journal of Investigative Dermatology.

The ?catch? here is that vitamin A from food ? like liver (calf or chicken), kale, spinach or carrots ? didn?t make a bit of difference. The vitamin A precursors such as beta-carotene and lycopene used in many multivitamins didn?t make the cut either.

Only the retinol form of A, and only from supplements ? or what the drug industry refers to as ?the ?s? word? ? did the trick.

The new study might fly in the face of what the mainstream has been saying about lowering your melanoma risk, but the research has shown for years now that the sun isn?t the real cause of most of these cancers.

And one of the biggest risk factors of all might be completely out of your control: genetics.

In other words, blame your ancestors ? not the sun. And if you have a history of the disease in your family, you might want to make an A supplement your top priority.

Just don?t overdo it, since it?s possible to get too much of a good thing? and too much vitamin A can cause liver damage, hair loss, and skin conditions.

The level used in the study (1,200 mcg a day) is more than what?s recommended by federal guidelines, but perfectly safe for most people.
