A booming surprise: Couples in the lead at Masters

AUGUSTA, Ga. (AP) ? The heating pad and painkillers are as key to this 52-year-old's game as the smooth swing and easygoing stride he uses to amble around the course these days.

But before people pass off Freddie Couples and his aching back as nothing more than a nice story for a Friday at the Masters, the co-leader at the midway point wants to clear things up.

"Can I win?" Couples said after turning back the clock and playing his way to a surprising second-round lead at Augusta National. "Yeah, I believe I can. Yes."

On a day of sublime, spin-filled shotmaking at his favorite golf course, Couples made seven birdies and shot 5-under 67 to share the lead with PGA runner-up Jason Dufner.

They'll tee off in the final pairing Saturday, one who played the chilly second round in a stocking cap, the other as recognizable to golf fans as Tiger, Phil or Rory, even if that thick shock of hair has morphed from black, to salt-and-pepper, and now all the way to gray.

"Pretty bizarre," Couples said when asked to describe his day.

Well, maybe not that bizarre.

Couples led this tournament after the first round two years ago and was in the top 10 heading into the weekend last year.

After his latest one for the aged, he said he was asked how it felt to have the lowest career scoring average in Masters history, even better than Jack Nicklaus, who in 1986 became the oldest player to win the tournament at 46.

"I said, 'Well, I don't know the last year he played, but his scores kept going up a little bit and mine will be doing that shortly," Couples said. "But today was not one of those days."

Not by a long shot.

Couples kick-started his magical day by hitting a fairway bunker shot on No. 3 to 4 feet for his first birdie. He was pin high and 4 feet away again on No. 4 for the next birdie, and suddenly, he was doing more than playing ceremonial golf ? something he has always desperately wanted to avoid.

He hit a hybrid into the 15th green to 25 feet and barely missed the eagle putt. When he rolled in an 18-footer on 16 to get to 5 under, he pumped his fist and yelled "Bam."

Yes, folks, "Boom-Boom" is back in the mix.

"It doesn't surprise me," said Tom Watson, who nearly won the British Open three years ago at 59. "He hits the ball a long way, and he knows how to play this golf course, and he did it a couple years ago."

Couples closed out his day by salvaging par on No. 18 with a chip from in front of the green that stopped, checked up and spun backward to about 2 feet for a stress-free putt. He doffed his cap, raised both fists and flashed that familiar wide smile, knowing he'd be sleeping in late Saturday ? and sleeping on the lead.

What might it take to finish the thing off?

"A lot more birdies, a lot more made putts," he said. Maybe a painkiller or two.

He'll have plenty of company near the top of the leaderboard.

It starts with Dufner, who lost a five-shot lead with four holes to play at last year's PGA Championship, then lost in the playoff to Keegan Bradley.

"Didn't quite work out, but carried over into this year," Dufner said. "It gave me confidence that I can compete and play at a high level out here and do really nice things."

A shot back is a group of five that includes Rory McIlory, looking to atone for his collapse here last year; Lee Westwood, in the running as best player to never win a major; and Sergio Garcia, who once owned that title but has since relinquished it ? not because he finally won one, but because his game declined as he moved from his 20s to his 30s.

"I don't know if I'm ready to win. We'll see," Garcia said. "I wish I could tell you I'm ready to win, but I really don't know. So I'm just going to give it my best try, and you know, hopefully that will be good."

Bubba Watson and Louis Oosthuizen are the others in the tie for third, with Paul Lawrie, Matt Kuchar and Miguel Angel Jimenez another shot back at 3 under.

Phil Mickelson is lurking at 2-under par after a round of 4-under 68.

"Tomorrow will be a critical day," he said.

It sure will be for Tiger Woods, who opened his second round with two birdies over the first three holes but gave that all back and more. He struggled with his swing for the second straight day and shot 3-over 75 and walked off the course seemingly too frustrated to be frustrated. Or maybe he'd just worked it all out on the course, cursing, tossing clubs and even kicking one after a bad tee shot on 16.

He described his biggest problem as, "Not having much. I didn't have it today with my swing, unfortunately. I just had to hang in there and be patient."

Couples knows all about that. A day that began with him thinking to himself "What the hell?" and "What do I have to lose?" turned into something much more.

"Very shocking," he said, "and it was a great day."

How quirks in data skewed jobs report

Haraz N. Ghanbari / AP

President Barack Obama, speaking at the White House Forum on Women and the Economy Friday, said he welcomed the most recent jobs data, but they showed the economy still has a long way to go.

By John W. Schoen, Senior Producer

Friday's report showing a sharp hiring slowdown in March lends weight to suspicions that a string of positive monthly reports may have been too good to be true.

But the disappointing numbers for March may not be as bad as they seem. The problem, say economists, is that unusual weather and seasonal adjustments may have thrown this winter's data out of whack.

According to the Labor Department's latest monthly survey, employers added just 120,000 jobs in March, well short of the expected pace of more than 200,000 reached in each of the previous three months.?

Despite the lackluster gains, the official unemployment rate fell a notch to 8.2 percent in March, the lowest since January 2009, but only because fewer people were looking for work.

The economy has added 858,000 jobs since December and 3.5 million over the past two years. But economists have been paring back their forecasts for economic?growth?in 2012, and a symptom of what they are seeing may?be showing up in the slower pace of hiring.

"Ultimately the job growth number is determined by how the GDP (gross domestic product) grows," said University of Chicago economist Austan Goolsbee, who served as President Barack Obama's chief economic adviser. "We've had three or four very strong months, but those all reflected the uptick in the growth rate. I'm afraid the growth rate is slowing down a bit."

Last month, Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke cautioned that this winter's surge in hiring was not sustainable without a pickup in spending by businesses and consumers.

The outlook for the job market has been clouded recently by mixed signals. On Thursday, the government reported that the number of Americans seeking unemployment benefits fell last week to a four-year low. Independent surveys?show consumers and businesses are more confident and spending more. Production levels at factories are rising. A private survey released Wednesday showed the service sector boosted hiring in March.

But little of that improvement was reflected in Friday's employment data. Temporary help fell 7,500 last month after rising 54,900 in February, and the?average workweek fell slightly.??

Despite the relatively mild weather, the construction industry shed 7,000 jobs in March, according to the government data. Those numbers helped confirm some economists' suspicions that this winter's jobs reports may have been skewed upward by the formula used to adjust the data for seasonal factors.

Like many economic statistics, the government?s employment data is adjusted to factor out recurring seasonal trends, such as the surge in temporary hiring by retailers and by the postal service during the holiday season. The purpose is to get a better idea of underlying, longer-lasting trends.

The unusual severity of layoffs during the recession of 2007 may have thrown the numbers off course this winter, especially given the unusually mild weather in much of the country. The result is that many economists say the March number may be understating the job market's true strength.

"This (disappointing March data) feels like, to me, seasonals and weather," said Mark Zandi, chief economist with Moody's Analytics. "Retail normally hires 20,000 to 25,000 per month. There's no reason, given everything else we know about retail, why they shouldn't be doing this. They subtracted 35,000 (according to the March data). That's a very long swing."

The dip in the jobless rate from 8.3 percent in February -- and 9.1 percent as recently as August -- extended a welcome trend for the White House. But that trend is unlikely to continue without a substantially stronger pace of job creation. Most economists don't see the jobless rate falling below current levels before the November election.

The job market has already taken center stage in the presidential campaign. Former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney, the likely Republican challenger, blamed the president's policies this week for slow growth and high unemployment. On Friday, he called the latest jobs report "weak and very troubling."

The Obama campaign has said?Romney would reinstate policies that led to the recession:?lower taxes for the wealthy and less regulation for business. But the president acknowledged Friday that voters aren't happy with the pace of the economic recovery.

??It?s clear to every American that there will still be ups and downs along the way and that we've got a lot more work to do,?? Obama said during remarks at a White House forum on women and the economy.

If the economy is slowing, policymakers at the Fed face a difficult summer. Five years after one of the worst recessions since the Great Depression, the central bank has embarked on two rounds of massive bond buying to force interest rates to the floor. It's not at all clear whether a third round would have any greater impact.

Fed policymakers are also powerless to offset the current recession sweeping Europe and a slowdown in China's economy.

"(Friday's jobs data are) a reminder that the U.S. recovery is?not suddenly going to transform into a spectacular success,?particularly not at a time when the rest of the world economy is?stumbling," said Paul Ashworth, chief?U.S. economist for Capital Economics.

What the Friday: World?s first hotel for sheep opens in Japan

The life of the ludicrously rich in Japan is indeed tough. You get to go on?exotic vacations constantly, but each trip requires you to find a house sitter for your pet sheep. Thankfully, though, the well-off Japanese businessman has a new, elegant solution:?Hotel Sheep.

Apparently, owning a pet sheep is the latest luxury for the wealthy and?fashionable in Japan. The animals are prized for their gentle demeanor. And because they're insanely cute and cuddly, they're adored to the point where luxury away accommodations are a must.

Lest you think this is just some hastily constructed sheep shelter, the folks at the?extraordinarily opulent Hotel Sheep have created a marketing video for you to watch explaining the hotel's amenities. Sheep parents can rest easy knowing that their pets' rooms are equipped with television sets.

Sadly, though, the hotel cannot accommodate your pet ram. "Ram can be harsh, to accommodate sadly we cannot," explains the presentation.

FEMA To Scott: Bill Signing Could Kill Florida Flood Insurance ...

(Source: National Flood Insurance Program)

(Source: National Flood Insurance Program)

TALLAHASSEE (CBSMiami) ? Florida Governor Rick Scott has been put on notice that homeowners and businesses across the state will lose access to the federal Flood Insurance program if he signs a bill now on his desk which would change the way local governments issue building permits.

The measure before the Governor is House Bill 503, which among other items allows local governments to issue building permits without getting permits from any other state or federal agency, such as FEMA, the Federal Emergency Management Agency. This bill was backed by businesses who claimed the permitting process involved too many agencies and too much time. They believe this bill will change that

FEMA, which is run by former Florida Emergency Management Director Craig Fugate, is concerned that leaving other agencies like FEMA out of the loop would give it no say over development in flood prone areas, a violation of National Flood Insurance Program rules.

The agency warned Scott that if state action forces the suspension of the Flood Insurance program, more than 2 million policies with almost $500 billion in coverage could be at risk. A suspension could also stall new home financing in places like South Florida, because lenders usually require flood insurance if a home does not have a specific exemption.

?One consequence is that flood insurance may not be sold or renewed within the community,? FEMA Regional Administrator Major May wrote in his letter to Scott. ?We want to ensure that Florida citizens continue to receive the benefits of the (National Flood Insurance Program).?

The federal flood insurance program is the only place to insure against flooding; private insurors and the state-backed Citizens insurance do not insure for flood losses.

Major Computer Software-Hardware Issues and How to Fix Them

With regular usage, everything breaks down once a while. Computers are no different. With the regular usage, and sometimes due to improper handling, there arise many software and hardware issues in the computers. These issues can be repetitive and quite annoying if not fixed properly. Delaying the fix of these issues can eventually lead to the corruption of your computer data and in some cases total loss of it.
In this article we will discuss some of the most common yet most annoying computer hardware and software issues and how to fix them properly. Article also advises the simple precautionary steps you can take to avoid these issues from being arisen at the first place.

1. Computer Hang: Its late in the night, you are working on a very urgent office presentation on your computer and suddenly your computer got hanged. Does it sound familiar to you? Getting your computer hanged while working on some important work or college project is quite a common scenario which many of us has seen. I know I have seen it couple of times and I feel like beating the circuits out of my computer at that time.
Reason: The most common reason why computer got hanged is that the processor got slow and is not able to cope up with all the processes that are going on. It might be the case that you are using some extremely heavy tool or software utility which caused this problem. In some cases, playing video games with heavy graphics requirement can cause this issue. No matter what the reason is, it's always incapability of the computer processor to cope up with current applications that causes your computer to hang.
Fix: First thing first. If you intend to use the heavy software tools or utility then make sure your computer's processor is capable to take up the load. If not, it's better to upgrade your computer processor and RAM. In case you are facing this issue despite of a capable processor and RAM then most probably reason is some background hidden process that is running and consuming all of your processor and RAM. Perform a proper background operation check and make sure that no regular software update or some unwanted virus process is not running background. Thirdly I suggest you perform defragmentation of your hard drive once a month to make sure that computer is not slowed down due to the segregated data.
2. Data Corruption: Data corruption is another major issue that arises every now and then if you use your computer regularly. The data corruption is nothing but the unavailability of the computer data for many reasons. If your data is corrupted then you will not be able to access it even if it's still inside your computer's hard drive.
Reason: The data corruption can happen for many reasons. First common reason is that your computer hard drive may get crashed due to which all the data inside the drive got corrupted. Second common reasons generally is the presence of some unwanted virus that causes problem in accessing the particular data or corrupt it by introducing the junk data within your data. Third reason might be the processor is not able to track the data within the hard drive for any reason.
Fix: Fixing a data corruption problem can be little tricky and I advise you not to do it yourself unless you are a data recovery specialist. The data inside your hard drive is very precious since there are literally tons and tons of files and documents stored in it. Minor flaw in your approach in recovering the data can lead to serious data loss. It's better to allow the specialist perform the data recovery.
There are basically 2 types of data corruption. The first type of data corruption is considered as the easier data corruption. In this case, most of the time, a computer virus is responsible for the data corruption and running a simple virus scan and performing basic data recovery diagnosis will give you back your precious data.
The second case is bit tricky. In this case, the hard drive got damaged (soft/hard) and due to this there is chunk of data that is missing and due to the inconsistency in the entire data due to the lost chunk, the remaining data also becomes unreachable. To fix this issue, there are many software tools and utilities that offer reproduction of the lost data from the remaining block. The data recreated by these software utilities is then carefully placed in place of the lost data.
The whole data is merged employing some serious computer logics and algorithms and there you go, you get your data back. The second technique is quite expensive and in some cases time consuming but the results are most of the time satisfactory.

Nokia Lumia 900 (AT&T)

The best Windows Phone so far, Nokia's Lumia 900 ($99 with a two-year AT&T contract) is a big, attractively designed slab of fun. We recommend it especially to first-time smartphone?owners and Facebook addicts, although the lack of some key apps, including a few popular casual games, still keep Android and iOS phones in the lead for most buyers.

Design, Call Quality and Internet
The Lumia 900 ?comes in black, white, or cyan. Don't get black. The other two colors highlight the phone's elegant Northern European design, while the black one just looks like another black slab. The rolled edges, flat bottom, and matte back really help the Lumia 900 stand apart from similar smartphones, and you see these features much more with the white or blue models.

At 5.0 by 2.7 by .45 inches (HWD) and 5.6 ounces, this is a big phone, on par with other large phones like the Editor's Choice Samsung Galaxy S II Skyrocket for AT&T?($199, 4.5 stars). I found it usable single-handed, though. The 4.3-inch screen offers a 800-by-480 resolution, and Nokia's ClearBlack Display technology has very deep blacks and saturated colors. There's just one occasional odd note: Skin oils on the front glass can give some white areas a rainbow effect.

With excellent reception on AT&T's network, I was able to connect calls with the Lumia 900 in places the Skyrocket ?couldn't. Voice quality wasn't quite as good as with the Skyrocket, though. The Lumia's speaker is tuned louder, which makes it easier to understand quiet talkers, but introduces distortion with loud inputs. Sound through the microphone was generally clear on the other end of calls, with a little bit of background noise coming through. The speakerphone is loud enough for outdoor use.

Windows Phone 7's voice command system is excellent. You can trigger it from a Bluetooth headset?our Jawbone Icon ($99, 4 stars) worked perfectly?and use it not only to dial the phone, but to do Web or local area searches.

The phone connects via HSPA+ 21 and LTE networks and it has the right bands for AT&T's and foreign systems, but not T-Mobile's HSPA. Data speeds were spectacular on AT&T's LTE network in New York City, with downloads ranging from 13-20Mbps and uploads in the 5-7Mbps range. I got consistently faster speed test speeds on the Lumia 900 than on the Skyrocket. Also, you can use the phone as a wireless hotspot with the appropriate plan.

The Lumia 900 also connects via Wi-Fi 802.11n, and had no problem connecting to WPA2-protected networks during testing. Talk time was very good at 7 hours, 17 minutes, and my Lumia lasted more than a day on standby.

OS and Apps
The Lumia 900 runs on a ?1.4GHz Qualcomm APQ8055 (single-core, not dual-core)?processor. The OS is well-tuned for the CPU, though: I didn't find any problems with responsiveness, and the Lumia 900 split our browser benchmarks with faster Android phones.

Windows Phone is bold, easy to use, well-executed, fun, and social. It doesn't look like the competition, and it puts Facebook and Twitter at its core. As I say in our full Windows Phone 7.5 Mango review, "It's full of people-centric features that make it easier to stay in touch with friends and family, to communicate, and to share ideas. It's easier to use than Android, and in many ways slicker than Apple's iOS."

Windows Phone owners tend to love the platform. The OS won our Reader's Choice award, and readers rated it as better for texting, email, Web browsing, and gaming than Android. In our experience, it's smoother and more stable than many Android devices.

The platform now has 65,000 apps, including a great collection of exclusive games. But if you're specifically looking for key social games that new smartphone owners may want to play with their friends, you'll run into trouble.?Windows Phone lacks all the Zynga "With Friends" games, as well as Draw Something, Pandora, Angry Birds Rio, Temple Run, and Cut the Rope.

You won't be bored. You can play Doodle Jump, Super Monkey Ball, Sonic the Hedgehog 4, Need for Speed: Hot Pursuit, Angry Birds, Fruit Ninja, and thousands of other games. High-end titles include Assassin's Creed and Sims 3. But if your friends are all playing Draw Something, well, you're out. The problem isn't that there aren't aren't great apps. It's that there aren't the specific apps your non-Windows-Phone-owning friends are using.?
