NFC version of Nokia Lumia 610 accidentally leaked on YouTube (update: now official)

NFC version of Nokia Lumia 610 accidentally leaked on YouTube
In a world where NFC is just starting to become useful, its notable absence on Nokia's Windows Phones has been increasingly, well, notable. But a video that temporarily appeared on the Finnish phone-maker's YouTube account reveals that NFC is indeed coming, with a new version of the Lumia 610 on the Orange network apparently set to become the first handset to make it happen somewhere in Europe. The video was quickly pulled, but not before Thegadgetbuff managed to grab a dodgy rip of it, which you'll see after the break. It contains an interview with Andrea Bacioccola, whose job title ("Lead program manager, NFC") pretty much says it all -- even before he gets to mentioning stuff like FourSquare checking-in, audio speaker pairing like with the N9, and a new Nokia Tag Writer app that could possibly do something similar to the customizable Xperia SmartTag system. See for yourself after the break, and as mentioned, please forgive the clip's piratical quality.

Update: Nokia has put out a press release confirming the above, and saying that the new NFC-equipped Lumia 610 will be out on Orange early in the next quarter. It's also certified for MasterCard's PayPass technology. Official video now added too.

Business Consultant's Digest April 11th, 2012 | arc mercury

As a business consulting firm we focus on small businesses, startups and the middle class entrepreneur.? Knowing the value of time, here we share news items that we believe have the deepest impact on small business.

Top stories being reported today in the Wall Street Journal:

  • New Europe Woes Hit Global Markets-A wave of selling rolled through financial markets on both sides of the Atlantic Tuesday, shattering a calm that has pervaded global markets for the past few months, as concerns flared anew about Europe?s troubled economies.
  • Tough Times for Franchising-Two closely watched disputes now playing out in the courts are shining a spotlight on tensions between franchise owners and management.
  • AIG to Return to U.S. Property Investing-American International Group is planning to jump back into U.S. property investing, reversing years long efforts to downsize its real-estate business in the wake of its near-collapse and government bailout in 2008.
  • Rethinking the Value of Business Majors-More than 20% of U.S. undergraduates are business majors, but now faculty members, school administrators and corporate recruiters are questioning the value of a business degree at the undergraduate level.

Is it good news to hear that AIG is returning to US property investing? ?It depends on how you interpret this, on one side the bailout did what it was supposed to do, bail them out and return them to normal. ?On the other side, it is disconcerting to hear that AIG may return to their old bad habits of over leveraging their Mortgage Backed Securities portfolio. ?Can we be confident that the SEC and the new legislation?enacted?after the 2008 meltdown will be capable of keeping these ?To Big To Fail? companies from experiencing another moral hazard? ?Only time will tell. ?In the mean time we business consultants will remain positive that the lesson was learned from companies like AIG. ?Ethics do matter and never rest on your laurels.

Top stories being reported today in the Wall Street Journal:

  • The Dow industrials fell?for a fourth consecutive trading session and the first since Friday?s disappointing jobs report. The blue chips dropped 130.55 points, or 1%, to 12929.59. Treasury prices rose, pushing the 10-year yield down to 2.035%
  • Small-Business Owners Less Upbeat-?Small-business owners became slightly less confident in March, data released showed, as rising prices and slowing sales weighed down optimism about the economy.
  • OECD Expects Growth Pick-Up-?The world?s developed economies appear set for stronger growth in the months ahead, while China?s economy is also likely to pick up, according to the OECD.

Top stories being reported today in the Wall Street Journal:

  • Make Social Networks Work for Your Start-Up: Social networks can be used for marketing or even as an alternative to a company website. But jump in only when your business is fully functioning since effectively managing profiles takes time and energy.
  • Re-Sizing Small Businesses: Lawmakers, banks and the Small Business Administration are expanding definitions of small businesses to include more companies once considered midsize.
  • U.S. Firms Emerge Stronger: Big U.S. companies have emerged from the deepest recession since World War II more productive, more profitable, flush with cash and less burdened by debt.
  • Romney?s Path Is Getting Clearer: The fight for the GOP nomination appeared closer to an end as Gingrich all but conceded to Romney, and Santorum faced a money shortage in his home state.
  • Share prices have defied skeptics this year, registering strong gains even as analysts have been reducing estimates for first-quarter earnings. That raises the prospect of a jolt to investors as the corporate reporting season begins.

As a business consultant in the 21st century it is?imperative?that we analyse the effectiveness of social network marketing. ?It is definitely the hot new thing, providing easy access to lots of consumers for a quarter of the price of traditional advertising. ?This may seem like a no-brainer to the startup community, however, the devil is in the details, which can be uncovered through asking these two specific questions.

> How much time and management actual goes into effectively administering a social network for marketing purposes?

> What is the actual return on investment- time / resources invested versus actual customers in return?

This is a metric often used for traditional advertising, yet for some reason it is often overlooked when it comes to social network marketing. ?This is something to keep in mind as the majority of us spend multiple hours a day facebooking, tweeting, linking-in, ect.

Top stories being reported today in the Wall Street Journal:

  • Job Slowdown Renews Doubt-?U.S. job creation slowed, as a labor market that recently has showed vigor appeared to lose momentum. The data have political implications and raise questions about Fed policy.
  • Stocks mostly edged lower, capping the biggest weekly drop of the year, as the Dow industrials declined 14.61 points to 13060.14.
  • The improving economy is providing a slight boost to U.S. malls and shopping centers, which registered their first declines in vacancies in years.
  • Microsoft is courting app developers for its Windows Phone to try to dent the dominance of Apple and Google in the smartphone market.
  • Venture Firms Offer More Than Cash-?Some of the biggest names in venture capital are starting to provide start-ups with more than just capital, offering marketing, design and other services that companies typically need help with in their early stages.
  • Bid to Ease the Squeeze on Business-?San Francisco has for at least two decades been a difficult place to set up and operate a small business, but the city is trying to simplify the process, especially for restaurants.

The question of the day: is the U.S. economy recovering? ?Well according to the recent jobs report, no. ?New jobs created (nonfarm) for March were 120,000, coming in under 200,000 for the first time since November of last year according to the labor department. ?However, on a more positive note, US malls and shopping centers are registering their first decline in vacancies in years. ?A good indicator that the economy is returning it?s buying power. ?As for the entrepreneurs and start-ups out there, venture capital firms are beginning to come to the party with more than just cash. ?They are attempting to offer more hands on services that will help companies take off.

Top stories being reported today in the Wall Street Journal:

  • Fears that central banks may soon end efforts to support financial markets and fresh concerns about Europe drove down stock markets around the world.
  • Private employers hired 209,000 workers last month, an ADP report said, stirring hopes for the government?s jobs report due on Friday.
  • The New York Fed said it will explore sales of some of its remaining securities from the bailout of insurer AIG during the financial crisis.
  • Regions Financial repaid the U.S. Treasury $3.5 billion, allowing it to emerge from the federal government?s bailout program.
  • U.S. trade restrictions could hamper the ability of American businesses to reap the fruits of Russia?s entry into the WTO this summer.
  • Last month, the SBA redefined small architectural firms as those with less than $7 million in revenue, from $4.5 million. The SBA has made similar upward revisions over the last year in 130 industries, adding at least 27,400 new companies to its definition of a small business.

Outside of the usual?rhythm,?stocks up then down, Fed in then out, something of interest for the ?small business? sector: the recent revision of what a small architectural firm is. ?As noted above from the WSJ, the SBA (US Small Business Administration) redefined small architectural firms to mean ?firms as those with less than $7 million in revenue, from $4.5 million.? ?What does this mean from a business consultant?s frame of mind? ?Well for starters this increases the number of companies within the architectural industry that are considered small business, therefore increasing competition. ?For architects, government contracts can be very lucrative, more importantly, very consistent. ?23% of government contracts must go to ?small businesses.? ?This now gives lager companies access to this allocation of business. ?This does not only apply to?architectural?firms, this increase of what is considered a small business is a trend that has been affecting many industries. ?Ultimately, this may also affect how small businesses within various industries are treated in regards to future legislation and tax.

Cameron agrees joint defense deal with Japan

TOKYO (Reuters) - Britain and Japan said on Tuesday they have agreed to jointly develop and build defense equipment, the first time since World War Two that Japan has concluded a weapons-building deal with a country other than the United States.

The announcement came at the start of a tour of Japan and southeast Asia by British Prime Minister David Cameron aimed at boosting trade ties with the region.

"We have decided to identify a range of appropriate defense equipment for joint development and production ... which contributes to both countries' security and presents industrial opportunities," said a statement from Cameron and Japanese Prime Minister Yoshihiko Noda.

Without elaborating, the leaders agreed to "seek to launch at least one programme of such defense equipment as soon as possible and explore the feasibility of a future major programme".

Japanese defense policy changed last December to allow Japanese companies to export weapons and collaborate with countries other than its main ally, the United States.

Hours before Cameron's plane touched down in Tokyo, Japanese carmaker Nissan Motor Co said it would spend $200 million to build a new hatchback at its British plant.

Cameron's two-year-old coalition government is trying to boost British manufacturing to lessen reliance on a financial services sector roiled by the 2008-2009 global financial crisis. It also seeks to limit the economy's exposure to the crisis-hit euro zone by doing more business with fast-growing Asian economies and emerging markets around the world.

British officials said, in all, more than 200 million pounds ($317.19 million) of Japanese investment in Britain had been agreed, including a Mitsubishi Corp wind turbine research project in Edinburgh and a Panasonic fuel cell research centre in Cardiff.

"This trip is really about British business, British exports and investment from Britain into these countries, and investment from these countries into Britain," Cameron told reporters.

"Nissan's investment in the UK is a huge vote of confidence in the skills and flexibility of the UK workforce. We want to attract more investment like this," he said.

Nissan's new car will go into production in 2014 and create 225 jobs at its Sunderland factory in northern England and 900 more at the carmaker's British suppliers.

The new commitment comes on top of $200 million earmarked for production of a new compact car Nissan announced last month and will take manufacturing capacity at Britain's biggest car plant beyond 550,000 vehicles a year.

Accompanied by about 35 executives from defense, energy, construction and other firms, Cameron will head from Tokyo to Indonesia on Wednesday and Malaysia the following day.

On Friday, Cameron is due in Myanmar where he will meet pro-democracy leader Aung San Suu Kyi as the first major Western leader to visit the long-isolated country since a 1962 coup began a half century of military rule.

His visit, confirmed by sources in Myanmar, comes nearly two weeks after Suu Kyi's National League for Democracy won a historic by-election by a landslide, convincing the United States and European Union to consider relaxing economic sanctions imposed years ago in response to human rights abuses.

DEFENCE, NUCLEAR ON AGENDA

In Japan, Cameron and Noda were also discussing cooperation on nuclear decommissioning and free trade, as well as the violence in Syria and relations with Iran and North Korea.

Architecture and infrastructure firms and nuclear industry executives are with Cameron, reflecting British hopes for a slice of the vast sums Japan will spend to clean up and rebuild regions devastated by last year's earthquake and tsunami.

The tsunami washed away swathes of Japan's northeastern coast and wrecked the Fukushima nuclear plant north of Tokyo, releasing radiation and forcing 80,000 people from their homes.

"British companies have significant expertise in nuclear decommissioning and clean-up, with 19 nuclear sites in the UK currently being managed through the process," Cameron said.

Progress on securing a free trade agreement between the European Union and Japan is also on the agenda.

In Indonesia, the world's fourth most populous country, the British delegation will focus on deals in energy, construction, retail, pharmaceutical, defense and financial services sectors.

"There's enormous upside potential, and I think a number of businesses are very excited by the fact we're going to Indonesia," Cameron told reporters.

In Malaysia, Britain aims to tap the Southeast Asian country's position as a regional education hub, with many Western universities setting up campuses there.

The British leader also hopes to bolster moderate forces in the two Muslim democracies.

"There's the issue of encouraging moderate Islam and showing that Islam and democracy are compatible. And I think that both Indonesia and Malaysia are great examples of that," Cameron said. ($1 = 0.6305 pounds)

Cancer Treatment India vs Abroad

Doctors say India is on par with international cancer hospitals. Why then, do people tend to go abroad for treatments?

Case 1: Cricketer Yuvraj Singh was in the US undergoing treatment for cancer. His mother was quoted saying that doctors in India gave him wrong diagnoses.

Case 2: A leading Bollywood actress has been taking her father to the US for cancer treatment for a while now.

Case 3: Raj Kapoor?s daughter Ritu Nanda has been undergoing treatment for cancer in the US for the last three months.

Case 4: Sonia Gandhi has been going abroad for treatment. There are hushed whispers that she has the dreaded disease.

These instances ring alarm bells ? why are people high on going abroad for cancer treatments? Is our country inept to deal with the ?emperor of maladies?? Do we lack good doctors, or are we falling short of equipments and medicines?
???
BT delved into the situation and found that all the above queries, thankfully, have a negative answer.

Cancer treatment in India is the best
One of the topmost cancer surgeons in the world today, Dr R Bidwe, the Director of the Tata Memorial Research Centre asserts, ?We offer the same treatment as any other part of the world. Everything that can be done in the best cancer centers across the globe can be done here.?
???
Dr Ashish Bakshi, senior consultant medical oncologist with the L H Hiranandani Hospital reiterates that cancer treatment in our country is equivalent and in some cases even better than anywhere else abroad.
???
Devika Bhojwani, Vice President of the Women?s Cancer Initiative says, ?It is a myth that we get better cancer treatment abroad. When it comes to treating cancer, we are one of the best in the world today. We have the finest surgeons here and right from the hospitals, to the treatment and surgery techniques, equipments used, and posttreatment care as well as cost, we are among the finest.?
???
Director Anurag Basu, who had been diagnosed with acute leukemia in 2004 was given a two-month ultimatum. He battled cancer here in our country and says that it is not that India is less any way when it comes to cancer treatment. The ace director states, ?As a cancer survivor, I have attended many conferences and seminars abroad and have always heard foreign doctors speak very highly of the kind of work being done in India when it comes to cancer. I have always heard them talk very highly of Indian doctors.?

Treatment abroad is expensive
Dr Bidwe says, ?The cost of treating cancer abroad can be around ten times more and in dollars, so that effectively makes it 500 times more. For example, even for a simple consultation abroad the deposit is 10,000 USD (approx Rs 5,11,100).?

Lack of support system and familiarity abroad
Twelve years ago, when Devika was diagnosed with cancer she knew that she would get the best treatment here. ?I went to Dr Praful Desai and
had a positive experience.? She believes that the kind of support system that one gets in your own country is unparalleled. ?It works psychologically ? you are more positive and definitely more comfortable when surrounded by your family and friends than when you are in an alien country.?

India is at par
Elucidating this further Dr Bakshi states, ?Nowadays, when new are drugs introducedabroad ? they are simultaneously launched here and are easily available here.? Dr Bidwe says that even if takes longer to launch here it is never more than a three-month gap. Devika adds, ?There are instances of hundreds of people coming here for cancer treatment from the West but that does not get highlighted. And that proves our country is one of the best in this field.?

Why abroad, then?
Dr Bidwe says, ?The reason that people still want to go abroad for treatment is that they don?t want people to know they are suffering from cancer. Dr Bakshi says, ?Patients tend to travel abroad but that only happens in the case of celebrities and they do it the sake of privacy.? Considering the fact that it is extremely expensive to treat cancer abroad maybe the celebrities are the only ones who can really afford it.

Doctor?to-patient ratio
Anurag makes another point, ?I believe that in our country, the doctor-to-patient ratio is extremely poor. There are too many cancer patients in India, and the numbers are increasing every year, whereas there aren?t enough oncologists. And that is probably because studying oncology takes a long time and MBBS students take up other specialisations. Abroad, there are more doctors and fewer patients and maybe because of that, when people can afford to, they go abroad.?
???
Experts agree that the doctor-to-patient ratio is skewed, ?We have 450,000 follow-up patients every year and our annual registration of new patients is 50,000 with a permanent staff (upper limit) of 150 doctors, whereas abroad there are around 30,000 annual registrations of new patients with 700 doctors,? informs Dr Bidwe.
???
Bollywood music director Aadesh Shrivastava who had been diagnosed with multiple myeloma in October 2010 had two options; either seek treatment in London or here in the country. But he chose the latter. ?Seeking treatment in London would mean shifting my family along, and disrupting my children?s education, which would be quite a hassle. Besides, the treatments available here are on par with those abroad. Many top doctors and surgeons abroad are Indian. Also, it terms of cost, there's not much of a difference. The bonus point in seeking treatment abroad is that, because of the pleasant weather and less pollution, the rate of recovery is faster.? Though it is said that the best doctors are based in Germany, Aadesh says that he personally prefers Indian doctors, simply because it?s much easier to communicate with them and doing so puts one at ease.

Paper Boutique Scrapbooking Studio: Home

Home is the theme this month at OUAS I have been debating about the subject for a while, thinking about that beautiful word home.? Actually the minute I saw the sketch I went to work and did it.? In my creating process I usually begin with a photo but I didn't have one of my physical house but I did have a photo of Mercedes in front of me.? And then it hit me, home is something else, it is what we create around us, it is our significant others, home can be anywhere in the world as long as I have my family.? You see in my younger life I moved far away to go to college and that town became my home, then I married and moved far away again and?this new town?also became my hometown.

?? ? In our married life we have moved 3 times, so the permanence of a physical place can not be home.? This last place had 4 bedrooms for the 3 of us.? I don't know if it was the 4 bedrooms or my approaching the big 4 oh, but we planned on having another baby.? It was a very thought through decision, there is an 8 year gap in between them because of the complications in my first pregnancy.?? I am telling you then and there this little one completed the circle of what I call home.? She completes our family and makes it a home and that is why I have used her picture for my LO.?

?journaling:? With you life is more beautiful and home is complete.
?I incorporated some home touches using the gorgeous windows from Imaginarium Design, although I disected them into 5 pieces, LOL I wanted to fit the whole picture in it and make a balcony for her.

?I lifted my leaves and my butterflies to make them pop from the page

With you!

Now this one is a fun one, we had fun one Sunday afternoon after going to a Bella Boulevard workshop here in San Juan, PR

?This one was done using the CSI colors, I had been waiting for the right picture to scrap a packaging from ID, yummy!
?sugared chipboard
?clusters and pearls
?Miss M was modeling accesories for a store, that's why she is all dolled up!
And lastly, because I didn't blogged last week is my entry for this week's palette at the Color Room
?yummy Prima blooms, Heidi Swapp paper and Imaginarium chipboards, guess I am hooked on those...

Here she is at our last escape to Culebra Island, ahhh paradise I tell you!

And Solecito has all the feathers out in all its glorious yellow, so I will be using the color more and more, he looks like a sunset.

Hope your Easter was blessed and beautiful,

Hugs
