How your company will control your Windows RT Tablet

Windows RT company connect

Windows on ARM really opens up the world of Windows to some great hardware. So great in fact that you'll probably have to buy one yourself if you want one to use at work. But a time will come where you'll want to get your work email and maybe even an app or two. You might already realize that by adding an ActiveSync email account to your tablet opens your new device up to restrictions by your system administrator -- like requiring a lock screen password or the ability to remotely wipe it - and in the Windows x86 world, your company uses things like an Active Directory (AD) Domain and its Group Policies to lock things down. But, AD isn't an option for Windows RT. According to the Building Windows 8 blog, Microsoft has instead built in the ability to connect to the company network to access apps, while at the same time, gives the admin the ability to control all the familiar AD security settings like bad password attempts, complexity requirements and can even verify your anti-malware software status. Of course if you leave the company or just want to use your tablet without entering a password, you can always break the tie and regain control of the security.

Texts From Hillary: Best Political Meme Ever?

A Tumblr account entitled “Texts From Hillary” and featuring faux texts to and from Secretary of State and no-nonsense taskmaster Hillary Clinton is a must-see.

The premise is simple: An actual, recent photo of Clinton on her phone and looking incredibly bad ass is blended with political humor and hilarious text-speak.

Friends Adam Smith and Stacy Lambe, both communications professionals based in Washington, D.C., created the Tumblr account that went viral this month.

With gems like this, it's easy to see why ...

Clinton, Obama and Biden Texting

It turns out that Clinton, the country's top diplomat, is a big fan after hearing about it - and invited the creators of the meme to the State Department!

“It was great. She came out, she was all smiles, told us how much she likes the site and that people have been telling her all about it,” Smith said.

“She thinks it’s hilarious. It just captured this wonderful image of Hillary."

"You definitely could tell she was in charge. You could tell she was getting stuff done there was just no question that this woman was a total badass.”

UT Dallas researchers hope to imbue your smartphone with X-ray superpowers

If anybody ever told you that the future would be awesome, they were right. A new bit of research has emerged from the University of Texas at Dallas, which describes equipment that may allow people to see through walls -- and if that weren't wild enough, creators of the specialized CMOS imaging hardware believe the same technology could be integrated into our mobile phones. To pull off the feat, the scientists tapped into a portion of the electromagnetic spectrum that exists between microwave and infrared known as the terahertz range. Due to privacy concerns, the equipment is being designed to operate at a distance of no more than four inches, but its creator hypothesizes that the technology will still be useful for finding studs in walls, verifying documents and detecting counterfeit currency. In other words, this brand of x-ray vision isn't exactly on par with Superman's abilities, but it's bound to work better than mail order spectacles from Newark.

'Dancing With The Stars' Gives Gavin DeGraw The Boot

Pop singer had to participate in a dance-off with Jaleel White before getting the bad news.
By Kelley L. Carter

The savvy producers at ABC's hit reality dance competition switched things up for fans during Tuesday night's "Dancing With the Stars" elimination show. Instead of making fans sweat it out until the final minute to find out which celebrity dancer and his/her professional partner would be given the boot based on a combination of judges' scores and fan votes, they turned the tables a bit.

The bottom two couples — pop singer Gavin DeGraw and his partner Karina Smirnoff and child actor Jaleel White and his partner Kym Johnson — had to duke it out on the dance floor. The couples danced side by side in a duel of cha-chas, with the judges having the final say about who would be saved and who would be going home.

In the end, it really wasn't much of a shocker. DeGraw was told he'd danced his last dance on the show — he'd been the bottom scorer on Monday night, as was pretty much the case since the competition began. Monday night's theme was Latin night, and his samba failed to impress the judges.

That said, the judges told DeGraw that they based their decision solely on the dance he turned in Tuesday night, however, and not what he'd done in previous performances.

"It's been amazing to be part of the show," DeGraw said after learning that he'd be going home, adding that Smirnoff was a great mentor.

Next week, the celebrities take on Motown week.

'Catching Fire': Our Breakdown Of Two New Possible Directors

Bennett Miller and Francis Lawrence have been added to short list to direct 'Hunger Games' sequel.
By Kevin P. Sullivan

Jennifer Lawrence in "Hunger Games"
Photo: Lionsgate

It is now certainly safe to say that the search for a "Catching Fire" director is under way. Not long after "Hunger Games" director Gary Ross turned down the job, names of potential replacements began appearing. Last week, a Lionsgate wish list of seven or eight directors included the names David Cronenberg, Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu and Alfonso Cuaron. (We also had a few suggestions of our own.)

Now, two more possibilities have stepped forward. The Playlist is reporting that Bennett Miller and Francis Lawrence are also in contention for the gig. Both directors have impressive résumés, but "Catching Fire" would be their most noteworthy credits to date.

Here is our breakdown of the two latest candidates.

Bennett Miller
Background: Documentary

Miller's first film was a doc he directed and shot called "The Cruise" about a New York City tour guide.

Big Break: "Capote"

Miller's first feature film was a biography of Truman Capote during his years writing "In Cold Blood." Miller's college classmate, Dan Futterman, wrote the screenplay. Philip Seymour Hoffman's role in the film won him an Academy Award for Best Actor.

What You Probably Know Him From: "Moneyball"

When "Hunger Games" second unit director Steven Soderbergh's version of the baseball drama ran aground, Miller picked up the project and led the film to a Best Picture nomination at this year's Academy Awards.

Pros: Character and Vision

In both of Miller's feature films, the characters have been in the foreground. "Capote" examined the life of a lost and broken man just as he was reaching the height of his fame. With "Moneyball," he took a book that did not seem fit for a narrative film and made one of last year's best movies. He could definitely handle the complex relationships of the series.

Cons: He's Busy

Since finishing "Capote," Miller has tried to get a film called "Foxcatcher" off the ground. It would follow the true story of a paranoid millionaire who murdered an Olympic wrestler. Channing Tatum and Steve Carell have been on board since the fall, and Mark Ruffalo joined the film earlier this week. If Miller gets the job on "Catching Fire," "Foxcatcher" would inevitably be put on the back burner once again.

Francis Lawrence
Background: Music Videos

Lawrence began his career making quite the name for himself as a music video director. His work includes clips for "Waiting for Tonight" by Jennifer Lopez and "I'm a Slave 4 U" by Britney Spears.

Big Break: "Constantine" His first feature was the comic book adaptation "Constantine" starring Keanu Reeves as a supernatural detective.

What You Probably Know Him From: "I Am Legend" and "Water for Elephants" Lawrence helmed the half-a-billion-dollar Will Smith vehicle "I Am Legend." It was a huge hit at the box office and the second-biggest film of Smith's career. The director's most recent film was the Reese Witherspoon and Robert Pattinson romance "Water for Elephants."

Pros: Style and Action

Lawrence's background directing music videos helped him establish a particular look for his work, and since most of his films have been action movies, taking on the stunts for "Catching Fire" wouldn't be a problem.

Cons: Track Record

Of all the directors mentioned so far as candidates for the "Catching Fire" job, Lawrence has the least impressive résumé. Every other director has earned Oscar nominations for their films or the actors in them.

Windows Server 8 gets a new name, roses retain their sweetness

Image

A wise man once said that names don't matter, because what something's called won't change how mustard tastes. Microsoft has clearly taken that wisdom to its heart, spending two seconds (we hope) in deciding that official title of Windows Server 8 will be... Windows Server 2012. In other news, System Center 2012 -- Microsoft's private cloud software for enterprise users -- is now available for evaluation and purchase. Carry on.

'Battleship' Exclusive Clip: Taylor Kitsch Gets One Wish

"Battleship" comes sailing into theaters on May 18, but we've got an exclusive clip from the upcoming movie to help ease the wait. Cat Alarm Clock: So Cute, So Annoying

Boo the orange cat has apparently figured out a foolproof way to alleviate boredom and get his human caretakers the heck out of bed in the morning.

Reaching one paw under the bedroom door, he flicks the door stop - which is somehow on the door and not the wall, like every other house in modern civilization, but that's neither here nor there - incessantly to wake everyone up.

Two main takeaways here:

  1. Their alarm clock is cuter than yours at least.
  2. Cats don't have owners. They have staff.

Role of Screening, Monitoring in Early Kidney Disease Unclear

TUESDAY, April 17 (HealthDay News) -- At least one in 10 U.S. adults is estimated to have chronic kidney disease, but whether screening and monitoring people in the earlier stages of the disease provides a benefit just isn't clear, a new review of the available clinical trials revealed.

The finding doesn't necessarily mean that early screening or monitoring of kidney disease isn't helpful, it just shows no clear evidence to prove that it is. "We didn't find direct evidence for benefits or harms. There were no randomized controlled trials for screening or monitoring," said the study's lead author, Dr. Howard Fink, a staff physician at the Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Minneapolis, Minn.

But, when the reviewers looked at the treatment options available to people with early-stage chronic kidney disease, they found evidence that two types of blood pressure-lowering medication reduced progression to end-stage kidney disease and one medication reduced the risk of death.

The two medication classes were angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitors and angiotensin II-receptor blockers (ARBs). The benefits from these medications were stronger in people who had worsening kidney disease and those with diabetes, according to the review.

Results of the review are published in the April 17 issue of the Annals of Internal Medicine.

Eleven percent of American adults have chronic kidney disease in its earliest stages (one through three), according to the review. Chronic kidney disease is more likely to occur in older people, and those with other chronic medical conditions, such as heart disease, high blood pressure and diabetes. Most people don't have symptoms of early chronic kidney disease. It is detected through urine and blood tests.

Not everyone with chronic kidney disease will develop end-stage renal disease and need dialysis, but having early chronic kidney disease increases a person's risk of heart disease, stroke, kidney failure and death, according to the review.

The researchers searched available medical literature from 1985 through November 2011 for randomized, controlled clinical trials of people with early chronic kidney disease. A randomized controlled trial, considered the "gold standard" in research, is a study in which people are randomly assigned to receive one of several interventions.

The investigators found no trials that evaluated screening or monitoring for those with early disease, so they were unable to determine whether early detection and follow-up care would be beneficial or not.

When they searched for early chronic kidney disease treatment trials, they found 110 randomized controlled studies that included a number of treatments.

The review found that ACE inhibitors decreased the risk of end-stage renal disease by 35 percent and ARBs reduced the risk by 23 percent compared to an inactive placebo. The risk reduction was most significant for people who had signs of worsening kidney disease (macroalbuminuria).

The researchers also found evidence that ACE inhibitors lowered the risk of death by 21 percent compared to placebo in people who had more serious kidney disease, cardiovascular disease and poorly controlled diabetes.

"The risk of people with mild chronic kidney disease developing end-stage renal disease is very low, so it may be that these medications have a unique benefit in people with worse chronic kidney disease, or it may be that you just don't have enough statistical power in these trials to see the benefits in people with milder chronic kidney disease," explained Fink.

ACE inhibitors include: captopril (Capoten), enalapril (Vasotec), ramipril (Altace) and quinapril (Accupril). ARBs include: candesartan (Atacand), valsartan (Diovan), losartan (Cozaar) and olmesartan (Benicar).

Other blood pressure-lowering medications didn't provide the same benefits as ACE inhibitors and ARBs. Statins (cholesterol-lowering drugs) and beta blockers (drugs that help regulate heart rate and lower blood pressure) showed a reduction in the risk of death and cardiovascular events compared to placebo, but only in people with worsening kidney disease, or high cholesterol or congestive heart failure.

"This review shows that the evidence in early chronic kidney disease is very, very weak. The problem right now is that no one knows who will get worse and progress to end-stage renal disease," said Dr. Robert Provenzano, chair of the department of nephrology at St. John Providence Health System in Detroit, Mich.

Provenzano added that he wasn't surprised the reviewers found ACE inhibitors and ARBs to be most effective for people with early kidney disease.

He said that if people are interested in keeping their kidneys healthy, they should follow the same advice for keeping your heart healthy. Eat right to control your blood sugar, cholesterol and blood pressure levels. Limit the salt in your diet. Don't smoke, and stay active.
