Panasonic teams up with NHK on 145-inch 8K Super Hi-Vision plasma TV

Image

We thought the 8K 85-inch Super Hi-Vision LCD we saw during CES was impressive, but Japanese broadcaster NHK is already looking to surpass that by going even bigger. To that end it worked with Panasonic (above: that's Panasonic's Keishi Kubota on the left, Yoshio Ito of NHK on the right) to create this 145-inch prototype plasma, unveiled today as an example of the kind of displays we can expect to see once broadcasts jump to the higher resolution some day. The world's first self-illuminating Super Hi-Vision TV, it features every pixel of its expected 8K resolution -- 7,680 x 4,320. After working for months on smaller (only 85- or 103-inch) 4K plasmas, the two companies had to come up with an entirely new drive method for the display that works by scanning the pixels vertically to achieve a uniform picture quality. The NHK plans to show off the new display at its open house in May, although we're a bit more interested to see if we can watch the Olympics on it this summer. Check the gallery below for a few more pictures from DigInfo.TV's Don Kennedy, or hit the more coverage link for a breakdown of the difficulties encountered in building a high resolution display that's this massive.

Beyonce 'Committed' To Wearing Heels Until Giving Birth

'It makes me laugh thinking about it,' singer tells People of her pre-baby beauty regime.

Beyoncé loves her some heels. In the days leading up to the birth of her baby, Blue Ivy, Queen B was spotted around New York with her hubby, Jay-Z, and her stilettos. People magazine's Most Beautiful Woman has opened up about wanting to stay as glam as possible, right up until she went into labor.

"I didn't feel that I looked beautiful during birth — but who does? After being pumped with all those fluids and gaining so much weight, with my swollen lips and cheeks, I barely recognized myself," she said in the issue hitting newsstands Friday, Pressparty.com reports. "I tried my best to roller-set my hair and I wore my [lip] gloss when I arrived at the hospital."

But all of that hard work went out the window once the really hard work of having the baby kicked in. "I committed to the end and wore my kitten heels. It makes me laugh thinking about it," she recalled. "But after many hours of labor, I didn't care how I looked. It was all about the miracle that God gave me — the opportunity to deliver a human being."

Beyoncé may not have felt hot in the hospital, but fans were certainly surprised by how hot she looked for her first post-baby appearance, hitting the New York party scene to celebrate Jay-Z's Carnegie Hall shows in February, weeks after giving birth. The singer herself was surprised by how quickly she managed to look so good.

"I'm proud that my waist came back so fast. ... I had to get my tone back. I'm definitely softer," she said. "But I feel my body bouncing back. Whatever was tight and muscular, like my legs, I'm seeing it come back. You just have to work at it."

Beyoncé will return to the stage next month for several shows in Atlantic City. She's also reportedly working on new music to follow up 2011's 4.

O2 UK launches new wallet service, helps you empty yours (video)

O2 UK launches new wallet service, helps you empty yours (video)

This may not be the UK operators first attempt at dipping its fingers logo into your pockets, but O2's new mobile wallet does bring with it some de rigeur functionality. Taking a leaf out of Barclays' book, the new app lets you send "Money Messages," essentially text-driven money transfers to any phone number. There's smart-shopping features, too, such as a barcode reader for price comparisons, and daily discount deals to stop the well from going dry too soon. Interestingly, you can also apply for a physical companion card, based on Visa's pre-pay service to bring your virtual wallet into the real world. Not an O2 customer? Doesn't matter, apparently, and the app is "compatible with the majority of smartphones as well as iPads" which we guess means iOS at least, and Android, too, judging by the phones shown in the video after the break.

Trained By The Best: Facebook And J.C. Penney Both Hire Away Apple Execs

apple-logoSo, in case you haven't heard, Apple is doing pretty well. Things are different now without Steve at the helm, but change isn't always bad. Although George Colony, taking the contrarian approach, would like to disagree. Today, we've gotten word that Apple Senior Art Director Sharon Hwang, who headed the graphics design team, has left Apple to join Facebook's product design team. Though it looks like Hwang joined Facebook last month, the Facebook Design Team officially announced her hiring today -- fittingly, on their Facebook page.

Twitter app update brings improved discover, search and notifications to iOS and Android

twitter app

It's not like there's any shortage of alternatives, but those sticking with the ooh-ficial Twitter app on iOS and Android woke up to a rather pleasant update today. Briefly, the company's promising improvements to discover, search and notifications, with the new build allowing users to view "Activity" -- described as a "stream of updates that shows which tweets are favorited or retweeted by the people you follow and which accounts those people follow or add to lists." Search has also been made simpler in both programs, with the Connect tab allowing you to start typing the first or last name or username of the person you're looking for and watching autocomplete handle the rest. Finally (and perhaps most importantly), notifications for Interactions are in place, enabling busybodies to know right away when a tweet has been retweeted or favorited. Hit up your market of choice to get the new bytes, or just visit one of the source links below. Your call -- no pressure.

Noah Wyle Speaks on "Surreal" Arrest

Noah Wyle has spoken out on his arrest.

The Falling Skies star was handcuffed and taken into custody on Monday after joining a group of about 100 ADAPT members who were protesting in D.C., urging Congress to not cut any Medicaid benefits.

"I think they're really proud of the old man right now," Wyle told the Associated Press, referring to his estranged wife and two children, while waiting to be processed.

Adding that the experience was "slightly surreal," Wyle joked about how both he and former ER co-star George Clooney have now been arrested in the last month.

I'll "let George focus on the international; I'll deal with the small domestic issues," Wyle said.

Clooney has been active over the past year or so in expressing the need to rescue Sudanese citizens from an oppressive regime.

Apple's WWDC hitting San Francisco on June 11th

It's time to shift around that summer vacation. Apple today announced that it will be kicking off this year's World Wide Developers Conference on June 11th at San Francisco's Moscone West. The event is set to run through the 15th, focusing on developing for OS X Mountain Lion and iOS, by way of 100-plus technical sessions and hands-on labs, letting the developer community work directly with Cupertino staff -- and you can bet we'll be there as well. More info on the event -- including ticket purchasing details -- can be found in the press release after the break.
