It?s Time For A Larger iPhone

widget_d1MKMoReLiiRPT1IetCMkUThe Wall Street Journal reported this morning that Apple is currently ordering larger screens for the next iPhone. With the usual nonsense, the WSJ cited people familiar with the matter and stated these screens measure at least 4-inches diagonally. Production is set to begin next month, they say. The Journal better be right, though. A 3.5-inch screen is just too small now. At this point to say anything to the contrary is pure fanboi nonsense. The standard argument that consumers don't want a large phone is tired and overused. Besides, it's effectively proven wrong by the 20 million Galaxy S II phones sold by Samsung last year. It's time for a larger iPhone.

Find Your Love: Effective Mentoring Relationships

The Mentor-Mentee Relationship The role of a mentor is to aid the mentee in
reaching his goals. While the mentor can certainly learn a lot from teaching and
leading others, the relationship between the mentor and the mentee should be

mentee to do his best in his job. The mentorship program requires frequent
contact between the mentor and the mentee for the communication line to remain

contribute to each others grow as a person. You should take note that mentoring

Review of Two Popular Westchester Restaurants?Flames and Il ...

This week I had the good fortune of eating out at both of these well known Westchester dining establishments. They are very different in style, cuisine and even location. But quite frankly I find that most people just won?t read a full restaurant review, so I figured I would consolidate and do a 2 for 1. But the overall consensus on both places is that they are worth attending, as long as you are aware of a couple of subtle flaws.

First, Il Sorisso in Irvington. A large group of us went on Saturday night for a Birthday celebration. We were about 16 people and they put together a great package dinner menu. For around $50 a person it included salad, pasta an entree and all the beer, wine and coffee you could drink. They also let us bring in a few bottles to start with for a minimal corkage fee which I am always a fan of. Team Bruno killed it and graced the table with a Pride Cab, a Mondavi Oakville Cab, a Jordan and the Anderson Conn Valley Right Bank blend? all fantastic! However the Pride Cab they brought was the 09 which would still be a bit young, so I swapped them out with my 03 that I have had stored for about 5 years. Holy crap was that drinking well!! But I digress?

While the food was all really solid (I had the Penne with Broccoli Rabe and Sausage and a ?Homemade? Veal Parmigiana) and the service was great, I still left the restaurant with a bit of a bad taste in my mouth? and it was not from the food or the wine. My wife and I were the first to get to the restaurant and Game 7 of the Ranger vs. Caps series was being played night. There is a flat screen TV over the bar that had a rerun of Sportscenter on. I asked the bartender if he could put on the game instead, but he said the owner had to make the call on that. I figured it would be an easy enough call, but boy was I wrong. I asked the uninterested owner if he could put on the game, but the combination of the restaurant being a bit busy and the remote control being ALL the way in the basement just made it impossible to put on the game. Seemed a bit odd to me, but I am not a huge Rangers fan, so I kind of let it go. But I informed him I was part of a large group that was going to be spending a good amount of money in his restaurant and there were about 6 big Ranger fans coming in that would certainly have the same request. His answer? a very nonchalant ?OK?. So he was prepared to shoot down another 6 requests for the game, which he basically did. I mean, we had to harass the guy for the 45 minutes we were waiting for our table to get the game on. And of course by the time he finally caved, our table was ready.

So I guess my end take on Il Sorisso is this: The dishes were all fresh and well prepared and the pricing is somewhat reasonable. The staff was very attentive and moved us through the meal wonderfully. However the owner has not quite grasped the whole ?customer experience? concept which makes it a tough place for me to frequent, especially when there are so many solid Italian restaurants in Westchester that are the exact opposite.

Next up, Flames Steakhouse in Briarcliff. This is arguably one of the best steakhouses in all of Westchester when it comes to the beef, depending on the night. We had a work function on a Thursday night and when we all discussed the meal the next morning, everyone had different opinions on the steaks based on which cut they ordered. Those of us who got the NY strip thought it was fantastic, while the ribeye fans thought it was a little too fatty?even for ribeye. The filet was solid too, but not of the same caliber as the strip. The issue is if you go on another night it can be the exact opposite. Obviously the quality of the cuts the restaurant is getting from their meat distributor has a lot to do with this, but for the price of their steaks you would expect a little more consistency across the board.

Flames also mixes in a good amount of Italian fare into the dining experience. Again, we went with a large group so we were able to order a bunch of small apps to start. The eggplant rollatini may be the best in town and the lobster ravioli literally melts in your mouth. But it?s tricky to pull off this Italian restaurant and steakhouse combination, almost like the restaurant has an identity crisis at times. We ate in the wine cellar, which I would highly recommend, and they have a nice secluded outdoor patio section as well. But the interior is sort of a retro throwback to the 70?s and again, its tough to tell whether you are in a steakhouse or Italian restaurant. Personally, I like that throwback and somewhat ?wiseguys? kinda feel?but I have a feeling I am in the minority on that one. But unlike Il Sorisso, Nick (the owner) will make you feel right at home and is looking to make your dining experience as pleasurable as possible.

So while I can?t give either restaurant a glowing review,? I can tell you that I really enjoyed my meal at both Il Sorisso and Flames. Are they my top choices to go to for Italian food or Steak respectively in Westchester? No. But if they are in your neck of the woods and you haven?t been yet they are both worth a shot. Just be sure there are no important sporting events you are planning on watching at the bar that night ;)

Memorable: Man City's win among top comebacks

By The Associated Press

Associated Press Sports

updated 11:14 a.m. ET May 15, 2012

Try to capture it any way you like - exciting, thrilling, stunning, heart-stopping.

Sometimes there's just no word or phrase that quite encapsulates the sheer joy and, for the loser, agony, of a comeback win at a major sporting event. The struggle makes victory that much sweeter.

Manchester City added its name to the list of teams that have pulled off memorable comebacks with everything on the line Sunday by beating Queens Park Rangers 3-2 on injury-time goals from Edin Dzeko and Sergio Aguero. The win gave Man City its first English league title in 44 years, and set off some unhinged celebrating by fans of a team that has long stood in Manchester United's shadow.

Here are some moments, from soccer and other sports, that Manchester City's victory will be compared with as the years go by.

---

MANCHESTER UNITED'S MOMENT

Might as well start with the club across town. In the 1999 Champions League final, Manchester United trailed Bayern Munich 1-0 in second-half injury time before Teddy Sheringham scored in 91st minute and Ole Gunnar Solksjaer in 93rd for a 2-1 win. It was a signature moment in Alex Ferguson's long tenure at Man U.

---

BUCKNER'S BOO-BOO

The New York Mets trailed the Boston Red Sox 5-3 in the 10th inning of Game 6 of the 1986 World Series and were twice one strike from elimination, but rallied on Ray Knight's RBI single, Bob Stanley's wild pitch and first baseman Bill Buckner's error on Mookie Wilson's grounder to win 6-5 and force Game 7. Less remembered: The Mets also trailed 3-0 in the sixth inning of that final game before winning 8-5.

---

NICKLAUS RALLIES ...

One newspaper said Jack Nicklaus, at age 46, was washed up. That looked to be the case when Nicklaus was five shots behind going into the final round of the 1986 Masters. Then, he pulled off perhaps the most famous comeback in Augusta National history by shooting 30 on the back nine for a 65 and a one-shot win. He became the oldest player to win the Masters, and it was his 18th and final professional major.

---

... AND SO DOES ARNIE

One golf story always leads to another. Arnold Palmer was seven shots behind going into the final round of the 1960 U.S. Open at Cherry Hills. Angered when Pittsburgh golf writer Bob Drum told Palmer that a score of 280 "won't do you a damn bit of good," Palmer drove the par-4 first hole and started with four straight birdies. He shot 65 for a four-round score of 280 and won the U.S. Open over Ben Hogan and 20-year-old amateur Jack Nicklaus.

THE CELTICS FIGHT BACK

In the 2008 NBA finals, the Boston Celtics were behind by 20 points with 6:04 left in the third quarter before storming back to beat the Los Angeles Lakers 97-91, giving Boston command of the series with a 3-1 lead. The Celtics outscored the Lakers 31-15 in the third quarter, then put it away with a 21-3 run over the final five minutes of the game, fueled by two 3-pointers from Eddie House. Boston became the first team to overcome more than a 15-point deficit after the first quarter of a finals game and wrapped up the series in Game 6 back home.

GO GO BUFF-A-LO

Coming off two Super Bowl losses, the Buffalo Bills didn't win the AFC East in 1992 and had to host a wild-card game with the Oilers, who routed them 27-3 a week earlier in Houston. By halftime of the playoff matchup, Buffalo was down 28-3 and it soon became 35-3.

Rich Stadium began emptying. Soon, many of those fans turned around their cars and headed back as the Bills staged an incredible comeback. Houston went into a prevent defense in the third quarter. Buffalo backup Frank Reich, in for injured quarterback Jim Kelly, led the Bills to four straight TDs, including a fourth-down gamble for an 18-yard score, making it 35-31. After Houston botched a field goal attempt, Reich's 17-yard throw to Andre Reed put the Bills in front. The Oilers showed some fortitude by marching to a tying field goal, but Warren Moon was intercepted by Nate Odomes early in overtime and Steve Christie's 32-yard field goal won it.

Strangely, the Bills failed to sell out against the Oilers, the first time in 23 home games that the stadium wasn't full. So for local fans to see the greatest rally in team - make that league - playoff history, you had to be there and stay throughout.

LASSE VIREN PICKS HIMSELF UP

Finnish runner Lasse Viren set a world record in the 10,000 meters at the 1972 Olympics. He fell during the race's 12th lap. That's right - Viren spent part of his world-record, gold-medal winning run flat on his back. Not too long, though. He popped back to his feet, reeled in the pack ahead of him and, after several lead changes, he won a sprint to the finish. As a capper, he won gold in the 5,000 meters 10 days later. He did the same double in Montreal four years later.

---

RED BIRDS RULE

Some thought the St. Louis Cardinals didn't even belong in the playoffs last season - after all, they sneaked in as a wild card on the last day of the regular season. But the Cardinals won the National League pennant and trailed Texas 7-5 in Game 6 of the World Series. Just one strike from elimination in the ninth inning, David Freese's two-run triple put the game into extra innings. St. Louis then trailed 9-7 and was one strike from elimination in 10th inning before Ryan Theriot's RBI grounder and Lance Berkman's run-scoring single. Freese homered in the 11th for a 10-9 win. St. Louis went on to win Game 7, 6-2, for the title.

---

PLUCK OF THE IRISH

The 2001 women's NCAA basketball tournament featured a UConn team with Diana Taurasi and Sue Bird. But in the national semifinals, the Huskies faced a Notre Dame squad with player of the year Ruth Riley. Weeks earlier, the Huskies had beaten the Irish in the Big East title game when Bird hit a buzzer shot over Riley, and in their Final Four matchup, UConn went ahead by 16. But the Irish weren't done. Led by Niele Ivey's 21 points and Alicia Ratay's 20, Notre Dame shut down UConn in the second half and captured a 90-75 victory. Notre Dame then hung on against Purdue in the final to win its first (and only) women's title.

CHANG FIGHTS ON

At the 1989 French Open, 17-year-old Michael Chang lost the first two sets of his fourth-round match against No. 1-ranked Ivan Lendl, then came all the way back to win 4-6, 4-6, 6-3, 6-3, 6-3, on his way to becoming the youngest male champion at a Grand Slam tournament (a record that still stands) and the first American man to win the Roland Garros title since Tony Trabert in 1955. Chang considered quitting because of debilitating leg cramps that began in the fourth set of the 4 1/2-hour match. He stood through changeovers, instead of sitting, because he worried his legs would lock up. He guzzled water and munched on bananas. Famously, he served underhand in the fifth set. Another unusual tactic: When Lendl, who retired with eight Grand Slam titles, served on match point, Chang flustered him by hobbling all the way up to the service line, something rarely seen at top-level tennis. Lendl double-faulted, ending the match.

HARVARD'S GREATEST TIE

With less than a minute left in the 1968 edition of Harvard's annual football rivalry game with Yale, the Crimson were down 29-13. But two quick touchdowns left Harvard with a final chance to avoid a loss as it went for a second 2-point conversion. Announcer Don Gillis had the call on a pass from Frank Champi to Pete Varney with no time left: "Hang onto your hats, boys and girls. Let's just watch. ... Champi ... He's got it! He's got it to Varney! And it ends 29-29! What a finish!" Harvard's student newspaper captured the moment in its headline: "Harvard Beats Yale 29-29."

(AP) ? President Barack Obama's shift to support gay marriage is energizing young Hispanic voters who have been working side-by-side with gay activists in their push for immigration reform. The alliance has been growing nationwide and helping dispel what many say is an outdated notion that Hispanics are less tolerant of gays than the general public.

"My members are telling me that we need to learn from the gay community," said Dee Dee Garcia Blase, founder of the Phoenix-based Somos Republicans. She is now head of the Tequila Party, which she formed last year with the goal of registering young Hispanics to vote for immigration-friendly candidates like Obama.

"We need to take a lesson from the (lesbian and gay) community with regard to being that loud, squeaky wheel that gets fixed," Blase said. "We need to be more aggressive, and we realize it."

Both the Democratic and Republican parties are focused heavily on winning the Hispanic vote, not just because it holds the key to battleground states but because Latinos make up the fastest-growing minority group. The government projects Hispanics will account for roughly 30 percent of the population by 2050, doubling in size and boosting their political power. Some 600,000 young Hispanics who were born in the U.S. turn 18 each year, entering a widening pool of more than 21 million Hispanic eligible voters.

Conservative Hispanics see the president's endorsement of same-sex marriage as an opportunity to draw Latinos to the Republican Party. According to a 2007 religion survey of U.S. Latinos by the Pew Research Center's Forum on Religion & Public Life, two-thirds of Hispanics said their religious beliefs are an important influence on their political thinking. While more than two-thirds of Hispanics identified themselves as Roman Catholic, 15 percent said they were born-again Protestants. Evangelical Latinos, who cite Biblical teaching for their stance against homosexuality, are twice as likely as those who are Catholic to vote Republican.

But a poll released in April 2011 by the National Council of La Raza, the nation's largest Hispanic civil rights advocacy organization, and Social Science Research Solutions, a public opinion research firm, indicated that while 66 percent of those surveyed identified as Roman Catholic, 49 percent favored allowing same-sex marriage and that number climbed to 59 percent in favor of giving gay and lesbian couples the same legal rights as married couples.

A surprising 69 percent in the La Raza poll favored allowing gay or lesbian couples to marry in their church or religious institution and 52 percent did not view homosexuality as a sin, compared to 38 percent who did. Some 69 percent said good Christians should accept all people as God's creation and not cast judgment, while 60 percent viewed discrimination against gays and lesbians as a sin. Most of those surveyed, 71 percent, were under the age of 50.

While Republican George W. Bush won 44 percent of the Hispanic vote when he was re-elected in 2004, by 2008, 67 percent of the Hispanic vote had swung toward Obama. And that vote was pivotal to his success in states like Colorado, where exit polls show Republican Sen. John McCain would have won if only Caucasians had voted.

For many young Hispanics, both immigrant and U.S.-born, the DREAM Act ? which would offer students who entered the country illegally as children a pathway to citizenship ? is a key issue. Obama supports the proposal, while Romney's hard line against the measure, which he has called a handout, has alienated many Hispanic voters. The Pew Hispanic Center found in a December 2011 survey that 91 percent support the legislation.

Juan Rodriguez, who is active in the Florida Immigrant Coalition and an immigrant himself, said the gay rights and immigrant rights movements are "very aligned and becoming moreso every year.

The co-president of Blase's Tequila Party, Shara Mora James is gay. And two leaders in the movement to pass the DREAM Act, have recently taken over two emerging gay rights groups, Freedom to Work and Get Equal.

"The immigrant rights movement is grounded on advocating with the most oppressed out of our community, and in many cases, that has been queer undocumented youth," said Rodriguez. "We are figuring out more and more ways of supporting each other because we all grew up being told we needed to live in fear because of the communities we love."

Hispanic leaders and political watchers say they don't expect Obama's announcement to have much impact on the Latino vote, which could be key to victory in battleground states like New Mexico, Florida, Nevada and Colorado.

"No, no, no, no, no. It's not going to affect my vote," said Sister "Molly" Maria Luisa Munoz, a Roman Catholic nun in Denver who works with immigrants and the gay and lesbian community. "My mother straightened us out right away," she said. "God made everybody. How we came out? That's God's creation. Nobody should judge."

At Barela's Coffee House in Albuquerque's predominantly Hispanic South Valley, manager Geri Lucero said when the talk turns to politics there, it's almost always about the economy.

"Economics is more important right now because people are struggling with their money," the 57-year-old said, noting that conversation last Thursday, the day after Obama's announcement, revolved around two recent pit bull maulings, not gay marriage.

Will Obama's stance impact her vote? No, she replied.

Despite the increased acceptance of homosexuality and same-sex marriage among Hispanics, one of the most recent polls of registered voters on the issue, from Quinnipiac University in July 2011, shows only 37 percent of Hispanics said they would support a law in their state that would allow same-sex couples to get married, compared with 46 percent overall. But a Pew Research Center survey of Latinos in March 2011 showed 59 percent of Hispanics said homosexuality should be accepted by society, compared to 58 percent of the general population.

Gary Segura, director of Chicano studies at Stanford University, said that even though Hispanics hold more conservative views on family and social issues than the general population, "it's not how Latinos vote. It's about jobs, the economy, education."

The morning after Obama's announcement discussion on a Spanish-language radio station popular with Cuban-Americans in Miami focused on the president's embrace of same-sex marriage, but callers seemed more interested in the likely political calculations that went into the decision than in slamming the president for violating their religious principles.

Delsa Bernardo, who co-owns Yiya's Gourmet Cuban Bakery and Caf? in Miami with her life partner, said Obama's shift has actually re-energized her support for the president. Bernardo said she backed Obama in 2008 but has since become disillusioned with him, mostly over the difficulty she's had in getting business loans from banks that received the bailouts backed by the president.

"It might swing my vote more to him because he's more open on this," she said.

Still, some conservative Hispanics said they will use Obama's endorsement of gay marriage to try to woo more Latinos to the Republican Party.

About 25 conservatives representing 10 southern Nevada churches met last Thursday at the Casa Don Juan restaurant in downtown Las Vegas. The group of pastors, Hispanic activists and social conservatives blasted Obama's stance, fretting about the future of the family in the United States.

"He's destroying the fabric of the family," said Juan Sclafani, a Republican pastor at the First Spanish Baptist Church in Las Vegas. "His motivation is to get votes, but he doesn't realize that he is destroying our nation."

Alfonso Aguilar, executive director of the Latino Partnership for Conservative Principles in Washington, D.C., said his group expects to use the gay marriage debate to recruit new Hispanic supporters for Romney. They plan to focus on voter registration in Nevada and then branch out to Florida, North Carolina, Colorado and New Mexico.

Colorado's Democratic Party Chairman Rick Palacio, who is both gay and Hispanic, said it was difficult to say how Obama's statements would affect the presidential race in Colorado.

"While it may not be the most politically advantageous decision to make, he made the right decision," Palacio said. "I think that's more important than anything else. He's putting the right thing to do ahead of politics."

Review: 'Battleship' loud, dumb but stays afloat

"Battleship" is big, dumb fun that knows it's big, dumb fun and enthusiastically embraces its big, dumb, fun nature.

Director Peter Berg has crafted an almost fetishistic homage to Michael Bay ? like Bay's "Transformers" series, this is yet another action extravaganza inspired by a Hasbro product ? with its epic set pieces, swaggering bravado, panoramic skies and cheesy romance. It doesn't lean all the way into parody, but rather feels more like a faithful and knowing approximation of a very specific, muscular genre: one of those the-world-is-ending-we're-all-gonna-die movies. And because it's a little cheeky and doesn't seem to take itself totally seriously, it's more enjoyable than one might expect from a movie based on a board game created in the 1960s.

Yes, it can be deafeningly noisy between the crunch and shriek of giant metal objects fighting each other and the blaring rock anthems meant to pump up the crowd even further. (The soundtrack includes AC/DC's "Thunderstruck" at one significant moment, a song that's seemingly been played during the final two minutes of every NBA playoff game since the dawn of time. But it is effective.) No, it's not subtle between the annihilation caused by alien invaders and the rousing sense of patriotism that's the real weapon in this battle.

Then again, would you really expect (or want) subtlety from this type of big-budget summer escape? At least screenwriters Jon and Erich Hoeber showed enough restraint to avoid including the famous line from game's TV commercials: "You sank my battleship!"

Speaking of blockbusters, Taylor Kitsch gets more to work with here than he did earlier this year in another behemoth, "John Carter," as our hero, Alex Hopper. A slacker and troublemaker at the film's start, he joins the Navy at the insistence of his straight-laced older brother, Stone (Alexander Skarsgard). A certain gorgeous blonde named Sam (Brooklyn Decker) also provides some inspiration.

Flash forward and Alex is a lieutenant on one Naval destroyer while Stone is the commanding officer of another. Both answer to Admiral Shane (a withering, well-cast Liam Neeson) who happens to be Sam's father. They're all taking part in some international war games off the Hawaiian coast when ? oops! ? a friendly satellite signal sent to a newly discovered planet that looks a lot like ours in a neighboring galaxy provokes some angry extra-terrestrials.

What could these beings possibly want, besides the usual world domination? It's never really clear and theoretically it doesn't really matter; gawking at the ensuing spectacle is the reason we're all here. A cluster of spaceships hurtles toward Earth, shredding sections of Hong Kong before plunging into the Pacific Ocean. Alex and a couple other crew members ? one of whom is a weapons expert played by a smart-alecky Rihanna in her film debut ? hop in a smaller boat to have a little look-see at the strange, giant objects protruding from the water and trigger a massive, dome-like force field.

From there, "Battleship" consists of an increasingly intense but ultimately repetitive back-and-forth between our military might and the aliens' more sophisticated ships. The action sequences are impressively glossy and detailed and not inscrutable like some of the protracted "Transformers" showdowns; the bad guys' mean, circular doo-dads that resemble giant tires with vicious metal teeth are especially cool. What we lack comparatively in weaponry we make up for in heart and moxie, by golly. The aliens, meanwhile, are personality-free predators whose one weakness seems illogical given that they come from a planet whose atmosphere and climate are just like Earth's, but whatever.

At the same time, Sam, a physical therapist, finds herself trapped while hiking on Oahu with one of her patients, an Army lieutenant who lost his legs in combat. (He's played by Gregory D. Gadson, a decorated Iraq war veteran who had both legs amputated after suffering injuries from an improvised explosive device; it's an inspiring film debut). Of all the mountains on all the islands in all the world, they just happen to be right near the remote satellite center that the aliens want to take over to ... phone home, maybe? Again, the motives are a tad blurry. Suffice it to say, the script needed to put Alex's girlfriend in danger. This also allows them to team up with the skittish Cal (Hamish Linklater), the scientist who ran the place that originated the transmissions, for a little nerdy comic relief.

And if nothing within this multitude of elements works for you, don't worry. There's surely a movie based on Connect Four in the works somewhere.

"Battleship," a Universal Pictures release, is rated PG-13 for intense sequences of violence, action and destruction, and for language. Running time: 131 minutes. Two and a half stars out of four.

Our Handi Block Deck Piers weigh in at a nominal 18 pounds while other traditional concrete deck piers can weigh as much as up to 48lbs.

In relation to Evolves growing relationship with Parksite, Bristow adds Weve always been impressed with Parksites eye for innovation. They are the perfect complimentary partner to our overall philosophy and strategy. Their existing network of dealers provides the next logical expansion avenue for Handi Block Deck Piers.

The Mathematician's Obesity Fallacy

obesity man park benchAs I write, this interview with mathematician Carson C. Chow is the number-one most-emailed story on the New York Times Web site. Chow, a researcher at the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases, had no experience in the health sciences before he came to study the problem of why so many Americans are overweight. ?I didn?t even know what a calorie was,? he says.

This kind of outsider?s perspective can be invaluable when attacking a problem as difficult and entrenched as the epidemic of obesity in the U.S. Chow relates the story of starting work at the institute?a division of the National Institutes of Health?and finding a mathematical model created by a colleague that could predict ?how body composition changed in response to what you ate.? The problem, as Chow describes it, was that the model was complicated: ?hundreds of equations,? he told the Times. ?[We] began working together to boil it down to one simple equation. That?s what applied mathematicians do.?

And what did Chow?s simple model reveal about the nature and causes of obesity? Basically, that we eat too much. ?The model shows that increase in food more than explains the increase in weight.? Food in, fat out. Simple enough to be captured in a single equation.

Unfortunately Chow?s outsider?s perspective on the obesity crisis isn?t really an outsider?s perspective at all: it is the physicist?s perspective. Physicists have a long history of marching into other sciences with grand plans of stripping complex phenomena down to the essentials with the hope of uncovering simple fundamental laws. Occasionally this works. More often, they tend to overlook the very biochemistry at the heart of the process in question.

Chow?s conclusion is not just obvious?it?s a tautology. Because for Chow, a calorie is just a unit of energy. Eat more calories than you burn, and the energy must go somewhere. That somewhere is fat cells. The conclusion is built into the assumptions.

But perhaps a calorie is not just a calorie. Perhaps, as some prominent researchers argue, the body processes calories from sugar in a fundamentally unique and harmful way. According to this hypothesis, we?re not getting fat because we?re eating more. We?re getting fat because of what we?re eating more of. The biochemistry that explains why this would happen is complex?certainly difficult to include in a computer model?but that doesn?t make it wrong.

Ultimately experiments will decide if this hypothesis is true, or if it is not true, or if it is true but just one part of a nuanced understanding of obesity that includes biochemistry, microbiology, neurobiology, politics, economics and much more. The obesity crisis isn?t rocket science. It?s complicated.
