News about Facebook's IPO moves across the Dow Jones ticker in Times Square Thursday, May 17, 2012 in New York. Facebook priced its IPO at $38 per share on Thursday, at the high end of its expected range. If extra shares reserved to cover additional demand are sold as part of the transaction, Facebook Inc. and its early investors stand to reap as much as $18.4 billion from the IPO. (AP) ? In one of the largest initial public offerings of stock ever, Facebook said Thursday that it is raising at least $16 billion for itself and its early investors in a transaction that values the world's definitive online social network at $104 billion.

It's a big windfall for a company that began eight years ago with no way to make money.

Facebook priced its IPO at $38 per share on Thursday, at the top of expectations. The company is selling just a portion of its shares as part of the offering. The $38 price means all of its shares will be worth about $104 billion, giving the company a market value higher than Amazon.com and other well-known companies such as Kraft, Disney and McDonald's.

Facebook's stock is expected to begin trading on the Nasdaq Stock Market sometime Friday morning under the ticker symbol "FB." That's when so-called retail investors can try to buy the stock.

Facebook's offering is the culmination of a year's worth of Internet IPOs that began last May with LinkedIn Corp. Since then, a steady stream of startups focused on the social side of the Web has gone public, with varying degrees of success. It all led up to Facebook, the company that's come to define social networking by getting 900 million people around the world to share everything from photos of their pets to their deepest thoughts.

It has done so while managing to become one of the few profitable Internet companies to go public recently. It had net income of $205 million in the first three months of 2012, on revenue of $1.06 billion. In all of 2011, it earned $1 billion, up from $606 million a year earlier. That's a far cry from 2007, when it posted a net loss of $138 million and revenue of $153 million.

"They could have gone public in 2009 at a much lower price," said Nick Einhorn, research analyst at IPO investment advisory firm Renaissance Capital. "They waited as long as they could to go public, so it makes sense that it's a very large offering."

Facebook Inc. is the third-highest valued company to go public, according to data from Dealogic, a financial data provider. Only two Chinese banks, Agricultural Bank of China in 2010 and Industrial and Commercial Bank of China in 2006, have been worth more. At $16 billion, the size of the IPO is the third-largest for a U.S. company. The largest U.S. IPO was Visa, which raised $17.9 billion in 2008. No. 2 was Enel, a power company and No. 4 was General Motors, according to Renaissance Capital.

For the company that was born in a Harvard dormitory and went on to reimagine online communication, the stock sale means more money to build on the features and services it offers users. It means an infusion of funds to hire the best engineers to work at its sprawling Menlo Park, Calif., headquarters, or in New York City, where it opened an engineering office last year.

And it means early investors, who took a chance seeding the young social network with start-up funds six, seven and eight years ago, can reap big rewards. Peter Thiel, the venture capitalist who sits on Facebook's board of directors, invested $500,000 in the company back in 2004. He's selling nearly 17 million of his shares in the IPO, which means he'll get some $640 million.

The offering values Facebook, whose 2011 revenue was $3.7 billion, at as much as $104 billion. The sky-high valuation has its skeptics, who worry about signs of a slowdown and Facebook's ability to grow in the mobile space when it was created with desktop computers in mind. Rival Google Inc., whose revenue stood at $38 billion last year, has a market capitalization of $207 billion.

"There seems to be somewhat of a hype around the stock offering," says Gartner analyst Brian Blau.

That, of course, is an understatement.

Facebook's IPO dominated media coverage in the weeks and days leading up to the event. Zuckerberg's hoodie made headlines as did General Motors' decision to stop advertising on the site ?and rival Ford's affirmation that its Facebook ads have been effective.

There are a few reasons for the exuberance. First, there's Facebook's sheer size and high profile. The company grew from a college-only social network to an Internet phenomenon embraced by legions of people, from teenagers to grandmothers to pro-democracy activists in the Middle East.

Secondly, it's personal.

"It's probably one of the first times there has been an IPO where everyone sort of has a stake in the outcome," Blau says. While most Facebook users won't see a penny from the offering, they are all intimately familiar with the company, so it resonates as something they understand.

And then there's CEO Mark Zuckerberg, who turned 28 on Monday. He has emerged as the latest in a lineage of Silicon Valley prodigies who are alternately hailed for pushing the world in new directions and reviled for overstepping their bounds. He counted the late Apple CEO Steve Jobs among his mentors and he became one of the world's youngest billionaires ? at least on paper ? well before Facebook went public. A dramatized version of Facebook's founding was the subject of a Hollywood movie that won three Academy Awards last year, propelling Zuckerberg even further into the public spotlight.

Though Zuckerberg is selling about 30 million shares, he will remain Facebook's largest shareholder. Even after the IPO, he will own 503.6 million shares, or 32 percent of Facebook's total shares. At the $38 share price, his stake in the company is worth $19.1 billion. Zuckerberg will control the company with 56 percent of its voting stock as a result of agreements he has with other shareholders who promise to vote his way.

The set-up helps to ensure that he and other executives keep control as the sometimes conflicting demands of Wall Street exert new pressures on the company.

True to form, Zuckerberg and Facebook's engineers are ringing in the IPO on their own terms. The company is holding an overnight "hackathon" Thursday, where engineers stay up writing programming code to come up with new features for the site. On Friday morning, Zuckerberg will ring the Nasdaq opening bell from Facebook's headquarters.

The $38 share price is the price at which the investment banks arranging the offering will sell the stock to their clients. If extra shares reserved to cover additional demand are sold as part of the transaction, Facebook Inc. and its early investors stand to reap as much as $18.4 billion from the offering.

Alexandria girls finish second overall in state golf tournament

OPELIKA ? When the top of the heap is as strong as it has been in Class 1A-5A girls golf, sometimes second-best is the best place to be.

Before the week started, Alexandria girls coach Brenard Howard said he would be disappointed if the Lady Cubs finished worse than second in the state tournament at Grand National.

The Lady Cubs reached that goal Tuesday ? but only by the slimmest of margins.

Alexandria didn?t play its best golf, but posted a final-round 270 on the Lake Course and held on to finish second by one shot ahead of Bayside Academy. Hartselle ran away with its fourth straight title, posting a two-day total of 474.

Hartselle has won the title every year since Alexandria claimed the crown in 2008.

?We feel good about getting second; this is a tough course,? Howard said. ?We knew it was close.?

Meanwhile, both Alexandria boys playing as individuals had tough days. Dalton Chandler shot 83 and Cole McNeal shot 87.

Chandler finished at 158 for the championship, McNeal at 163.

Over two days of golf, any of the Lady Cubs? 530 shots could have been the difference between bringing back a trophy or going home empty-handed. As it turned out, the defining stroke was a 5-foot downhill putt on the 18th hole by Jessica Howard.

?I knew I had to make it because the other girl from Bayside (Rebecca Todd), we were right there together the whole time,? Jessica Howard said. ?I knew I needed to make it to help my team out the best I could considering I didn?t have a good day.?

Howard posted a 103. The Valley Cubs also counted an 82 from ninth-grader Jordan Gregoria and an 85 from senior Madison Williams. Courtney Randle rounded out the lineup with a 107, but her first-round 92 helped Alexandria lay a solid claim on second overnight.

?I knew Jessica felt bad because of her round, but that was a great putt to make not knowing it was for second place,? Brenard Howard said. ?That?ll make her feel better.?

Gregoria didn?t putt as well as she did the day before ? she recalled at least five three-putts ? but she still finished in a three-way tie for third individually at 160. Hartselle?s Arin Eddy (153) and Heather Nail (154) finished 1-2, respectively.

?Today I couldn?t putt and I was in the sand a bunch, but everything else was OK,? Gregoria said. ?Yesterday was OK, but today I know I could have done better.?

Williams bounced back from an emotional opening-round 90 and finished 10th overall. She got off to a good start, parring each of her first four holes, then ran into trouble again.

?I?m not happy, of course; it?s kind of a bad way to end your senior year, but I?m a good golfer and played good in a few tournaments. This one tournament doesn?t define who I am as a person.?

On the boys? side, both Chandler and McNeal got off to rough starts.

The par-5 second got Chandler for the second day in a row and he was 5-over through four holes, but he steadied the ship until back-to-back double bogeys on 13 and 14.

McNeal, meanwhile, never could find the groove. He was 4-over through three holes, lost four more shots before the turn and played the back in 7-over. He had six birdies in the first round, but didn?t make any Tuesday.

?It wasn?t me at all; it was awful,? McNeal said. ?I could?ve gone out there and hit a 7-iron ? one club ? and shot better than that.?

Researchers find common antibiotic carries heart risk

Thursday, May 17, 2012

Vanderbilt researchers have discovered a rare, but important risk posed by the antibiotic azithromycin, commonly called a "Z-pack." The study found a 2.5-fold higher risk of death from cardiovascular death in the first five days of taking azithromycin when compared with another common antibiotic or no antibiotics at all.

Wayne A. Ray, Ph.D., professor of Preventive Medicine, and C. Michael Stein, M.B.Ch.B., the Dan May Chair in Medicine and professor of Pharmacology, collaborated on the research published in the May 17 edition of the New England Journal of Medicine.

Azithromycin, commonly called a "Z-pack" is one of the most popular treatments for bacterial sinus infections and bronchitis. Although it was previously considered to carry little to no cardiac risk, the researchers noted well-documented reports in the published literature as FDA database reports linking azithromycin with serious arrhythmias. Based on this evidence, the Vanderbilt researchers sought to examine cardiovascular deaths in patients who were taking the antibiotic.

Tennessee Medicaid (TennCare) patient records were examined from 1992 to 2006.

The researchers took many steps in this large, observational, population-based study to rule out other reasons for the increase in cardiovascular deaths in patients taking azithromycin. About 348,000 recorded prescriptions of azithromycin were compared with millions of similar records from people who were not treated with antibiotics or were treated with other antibiotics. The primary comparison was with amoxicillin, an antibiotic that is considered to be heart safe and is used in similar clinical circumstances as azithromycin.

While the absolute number of deaths was quite low, relative to amoxicillin, there were about 47 more deaths per million courses of therapy in those taking the azithromycin. That risk increased to 245 additional cardiovascular deaths per million in patients already known to have a high risk for heart problems.

The researchers emphasized that the decision to prescribe any antibiotic requires careful balancing of both potential benefits and risks. This calculation must consider the severity of the infection, the susceptibility of the organism, the availability of alternative antibiotics and adverse effects.

"We believe this study adds important information on the risk profile for azithromycin," said Ray. "For patients with elevated cardiovascular risk and infections for which there are alternative antibiotics, the cardiovascular effects of azithromycin may be an important clinical consideration."

Pakistani president to attend NATO summit

ISLAMABAD (AP) ? Pakistan's president announced Thursday that he will attend the upcoming NATO summit in Chicago, accepting an invitation that was given after the country indicated it plans to end its six-month blockade of supplies meant for coalition troops in Afghanistan.

Pakistan closed its Afghan border to NATO supplies in November in retaliation for American airstrikes that killed 24 Pakistani soldiers. The route remains closed, but Pakistan's Cabinet has authorized officials to conclude their negotiations with the U.S. over reopening it.

The government is likely to face domestic backlash once the supplies resume, partly because the Obama administration refused to apologize for last year's attack and stop drone strikes in the country as demanded by Pakistan's parliament.

Hardline Islamist leaders on Thursday threatened to block the supply route if it does reopen, but it's unclear how successful they would be. Anti-American sentiment is rampant in Pakistan, but the country's powerful army has an interest in seeing the supplies resume because the move could free up over $1 billion in frozen U.S. military aid.

The U.S. and Pakistan raced Wednesday to conclude a new agreement on the supply route, but the two sides remained at odds over how much money Islamabad should be paid to end the blockade. Pakistan has demanded higher fees for goods shipped through the country and has also clashed with the U.S. over how much military aid it is owed.

The U.S. Embassy declined to comment on the status of the negotiations Thursday.

Before the November attack, the U.S. and other NATO countries fighting in Afghanistan shipped about 30 percent of their nonlethal supplies through Pakistan. Since then, supplies have taken a far more expensive route through eastern Europe and Asia.

Pakistan has insisted the invitation to the upcoming NATO summit delivered earlier this week was not conditional on the status of the supply line. But many analysts believe the invite was forthcoming only after Pakistan indicated it would reopen the route.

The summit will largely focus on the Afghan war, and Pakistan's president will deliver a speech to the countries that make up the fighting force there, his office said in a statement. He will be accompanied by Foreign Minister Hina Rabbani Khar and Foreign Secretary Jalil Abbas Jilani.

Pakistan's presence at the meeting is seen as important because the country is considered vital to brokering a peace deal with the Taliban and their allies in Afghanistan that would allow foreign troops to withdraw without the country descending into further chaos. Pakistan has historical links to the militants, and many of the top commanders are believed to be based on its territory.

Cooperation with Pakistan has been hampered over the last 18 months by steadily deteriorating relations with the United States. The downward slide began last January when a CIA contractor shot and killed two Pakistanis in the eastern city of Lahore who he said were trying to rob him. This was followed by the secret U.S. raid last May that killed Osama bin Laden in a Pakistani garrison town, an operation that was seen as a gross violation of Pakistan's sovereignty.

Relations hit their lowest level after the U.S. attack on two Afghan border posts in November that killed 24 Pakistani soldiers. The U.S. has said it was an accident, but the Pakistani army has claimed it was deliberate.

The U.S. has expressed its regret for the incident, but has stopped short of offering the full apology demanded by Pakistan. Analysts have said the decision is driven by concern about criticism at home, where Pakistan is incredibly unpopular because of the country's alleged support for militants killing U.S. troops in Afghanistan.

The refusal to offer an apology has outraged Pakistanis.

Amirul Azeem, a senior leader of Pakistan's largest religious party, Jamaat-e-Islami, said Thursday that the group's supporters would block NATO supplies because of Washington's refusal to honor parliament's demands.

"We will soon launch a movement to occupy NATO supply routes," said Azeem.

German launches lawsuit over alleged CIA rendition

A German man who claims he was beaten and held in a secret prison in Afghanistan by the CIA has begun a lawsuit in Europe.

Khaled el-Masri, who is of Lebanese origin, alleges that he was the subject of a secret ?rendition? operation and held in a concrete cell near Kabul for months, according to a press release issued by the European Court of Human Rights.

He says he was arrested in the former Yugoslav state of Macedonia in December 2003, and that his five-month ordeal only ended when U.S. personnel eventually decided they had got the wrong person, BBC News reported. The Afghan prison he was held in was nicknamed ?the salt pit.?

El-Masri is suing the Macedonian government for its alleged involvement in the case.

'Ill-treated'
He claims that he was ?ill-treated? and kept in solitary confinement in a hotel in Skopje, Macedonia, for 23 days before he was handed over to the CIA, according to the court?s press release.

?He submits that he was beaten, kicked and threatened while interrogated in a small, dirty, dark concrete cell in which he was kept in a brick factory,? near Kabul, the statement added.

The court?s press release said the Macedonian government?s position was that el-Masri had been interviewed by police because he was ?suspected of traveling with false documents.?

The Macedonia authorities say he had been allowed into the country and had then left, crossing the border with Kosovo.

The case is being heard by the court?s Grand Chamber, its highest level.

Physical therapist, health care administrator, or ... - Fitness Websites

Which care is best for me: physical therapist, health care administrator, or pharmacist?
Here is a little about me:
I love anatomy and the whole idea of health & fitness. I also enjoy sports and working out myself. I like talking to people and socializing as well. Also I am an excellent English student and a fairly good Math student, too. I want a career that I will enjoy, make decent money (,000+), and not have to go to school over 7 years to become. Also something that is interesting and not just the exact same ol? thing day after day. Right now I work at a local pharmacy (CVS) as a cashier in the store and it seems as though pharmacy is a bit boring. But then again, maybe I am not seeing the whole picture. But after doing a lot of research I can to the above careers and each of them interest me in a different way so based on the info I provided which is best for me?
If there are any other jobs that fit the above criteria and that you think would suit me then do tell! Thanks.

Chosen Answer:

I cannot think of a more fulfilling career than physical therapy for you! Your interests are at the ideals of a PT?health and fitness are our ultimate goals. Our knowledge of anatomy of the neuromusculoskeletal system is extensive (and after 7 years, I still learn more everyday). You will be required to take gross human anatomy.

As a physical therapist, you will have many opportunities to work in a variety of settings including hospitals, rehabilitations centers, outpatient clinics, work hardening programs, schools, private practice, home health, extended care facilities?the list goes on.

While some leave the field due to injury, I would estimate that it is less than other health care professions since part of education and core knowledge is ergonomics?how to do things the right way without hurting yourself. I see far more nurses, patient care technicians, pharmacits, lab techs, and even doctors as patients with work related injuries as opposed to physical therapists. However, it also highly depends on the setting you work in.

My job is never the same day to day. My reasoning and problem solving skills are tested every day. I have seen hundreds of patients for rehab from their total knee replacement?but no two ever act the same!

If you like to ?socialize? and enjoy being around people, I think you will get much more fulfillment at a PT as opposed to an adiministrator (who often do not work directly with people) or pharmacist. You get to know most of your patients deeply?I will spend more time with a patient in one wek than most people do with their physician for an entire year.

All PT programs in the US are now either MS or DPT level?the structure of most programs is such that you will complete it in 6-7 years. Math is always a plus?helpful for the chem and physics you will need to take.

Average salary in 2005 for a new graduate was just under ,000/year, but most PTs with a few years of experience made between ,000-,000.

This is an excellent time to persue PT as enrollment has been dropping?making it somewhat ?less competitive? to get into the professional phase.

NPR?s ?All Things Considered? Examines How Greater Acceptance Of India?s?

| By Kaiser GH Update

NPR?s ?Shots? blog includes an ?All Things Considered? story that examines how ?a 2009 benchmark ruling in Delhi?s High Court,? which ?struck down a 148-year-old law known as Section 377, a holdover from British colonial rule that made homosexual acts illegal,? has led to a wider level of HIV outreach to Mumbai?s gay community. Vivek Anand, CEO of the Humsafar Trust, ?which provides free HIV tests and other health services to Mumbai?s gay community,? said the ruling has helped health workers gain a better understanding of HIV prevalence among India?s gay population, the blog notes.
