Fans of old school heavy metal know Michaels as the front man for Poison. Others know him from the highest rated VH1 show ever, ?Rock of Love.? And Michaels won ?Celebrity Apprentice? in 2010.
The star has been battling Type-1 Diabetes since he was 6. A series of health scares were played out in front of America during his final weeks of ?Celebrity Apprentice.? It began with an emergency appendectomy. Less than two weeks later, Michaels was back in the hospital with a brain hemorrhage, which was followed by a transient ischemic attack. (TIA occurs when blood flow to a part of the brain stops for a brief time, triggering stroke-like symptoms. A TIA is felt to be a warning sign of an impending stroke). This was followed by heart surgery. Michaels is 49.
?I?ve been so blessed,? he says. ?I know it sounds very clichéd, but when you go through something like that and come out the other side doing just fine?,? he says, pausing. ?I sure don?t take life for granted.?
Michaels says he was both surprised and thankful for the outpouring of public support as he faced each crisis. Today, he?s past the string of setbacks and is very busy creating rock ?n roll gear, as well as toys and accessories for pets, with partner PETsMART.
Pets have been a part of Michael?s life since childhood. His first pet was a German Shepherd his dad named Tarkus Arlicicus.
?It was some sort of Romanesque name,? Michaels says. ?To be honest, I never knew why we named him that; we just called him Tark.? He says that having a pet helped to teach him responsibility. Along came cats, horses and more dogs.
Today, Michaels? menagerie includes two German Shepherds (still his favorite breed), Diesel and Phoenix; horses Bo and Ness; and his pet rats, Harley and Charlie. He talks lovingly of his beloved rats Marley and Chester, who passed away.
?I?m telling you, rats are smart, clean and friendly. It?s not like Ben and Willard. They?re unbelievable,? says Michaels. ?We need to create some rat toys.?
While the rat toys haven?t yet materialized, his Pets Rock line of toys and accessories will be available in stores and online around the end of May, with more products to be released through the summer, and in the fall, a line of cat toys called ?Look what the cat dragged in.?
?Love me or hate me, it doesn?t matter, you?ll love the ball with my face on it,? Michaels says and laughs. ?Dogs can fetch me, or not; maybe they?d rather bury me in the yard.?
Michaels says he had a hand in designing everything, then ?the pet experts? insured that each product would be safe. In addition to toys, the collection includes stylish t-shirts (for dogs) ? one with a skull and crossbones. Of course, Michaels? trademark bandanas are replicated so pets can wear them. One dog bed is pink, but a skull with wings adds macho rock ?n roll appeal.
There?s even a rock tour bus dog toy. Inside the toy bus are other toys, band members, groupies and a driver. It?s the toy that keeps on giving. As the dog shakes the bus, a band member or groupie might fall out.

China's economic growth will ease further this year, presenting policy makers in Beijing with the challenge of preventing an excessively abrupt slowdown, the World Bank said in a report Wednesday.
The bank warned slower expansion in China would ripple across Asia and the Pacific, but said the region remained resilient to Europe's economic woes, describing it as a "bright light" in a world mired in low growth.
"China's near-term policy challenge is to sustain growth through a soft landing," the bank said in its half-yearly review of Asia's developing economies.
"While the prospects for a gradual slowdown remain high, there are concerns that growth could slow too quickly. However, sufficient policy space exists to respond to downside risks."
The World Bank predicted that China's economy, the world's second-largest, will expand 8.2 percent in 2012, down from 9.2 percent in 2011 and 10.4 percent in 2010.
"A further slowing of demand (in high-income countries) would ripple quickly through East Asia's production and trade networks, where China occupies a central position," it said.
"Second, the main domestic downside risk arises from the ongoing correction in China's property markets, even though such an adjustment has so far remained gradual and orderly."
Concerns over slowing growth have intensified in China after weak economic data for April was released last week. Growth in industrial production, imports, exports, fixed-asset investment and bank lending all eased in April.
Since then, Beijing has lowered the amount of money that banks are required to hold in their coffers, and economists predict more measures are to come.
The Chinese government has set a growth target of 7.5 percent for 2012, mainly in a bid to keep unemployment under control and avoid social unrest.
The World Bank said China has the means to boost fiscal spending, but should avoid the kind of massive infrastructure spending that characterised its response to the crisis in 2008.
"Fiscal measures to support consumption, such as targeted tax cuts, social welfare spending and other social expenditures, should be viewed as the first priority," it said.
Slower growth in China will pull down the region as a whole, with the developing economies in Asia and the Pacific expected to expand 7.6 percent in 2012 from 8.2 percent in 2011, the bank said, but it kept an optimistic tone.
"In a world where growth is stuttering along in most regions, East Asia and the Pacific is a bright light," said Pamela Cox, World Bank vice president for East Asia.
"It is a region that is resilient to Europe. Europe is a cloud on the horizon, but it is not pouring rain yet in East Asia," she said, referring to the sovereign debt crisis in Asia's key export markets.
Commodity exporters throughout the region experienced a boom in 2011, but may be vulnerable if China goes through a faster slowdown than anticipated, triggering an unexpected drop in commodity prices.
"If (China) were to slow down further, that might have an effect on commodity prices... so it is something to take account of," said Bert Hofman, the bank's chief economist for the region.
"Some countries like Australia have a very diversified economy, but some countries that are more narrowly based and rely predominantly on commodity exports might prepare for a situation where commodity prices might be a little lower."
The bank said this should prompt developing countries in the region to speed up an existing trend for relying less on exports and more on domestic demand to maintain high growth.
"Some countries will need to stimulate household consumption," said Bryce Quillin, World Bank economist and lead author of the report.
"In others, enhanced investment, particularly in infrastructure, offers the potential to sustain growth provided this does not exacerbate domestic demand pressures."
Hofman said the region as a whole seemed well positioned to weather new global volatility.
"Many countries run current account surpluses and hold high levels of international reserves. Banking systems are generally well-capitalised," he said.
"Still, risks emanating from Europe have the potential to affect the region through links in trade and finance."

(AP Photo/Ross D. Franklin)
GLENDALE, Ariz. (AP) ? Skating between the circles, Dustin Penner saw the puck bouncing his way. A scrum of players thrashing in front of him, he fired a shot through the crowd and between Phoenix goalie Mike Smith's pads.
Fortunate? Maybe a little, but it was all the Los Angeles Kings needed to get where they haven't been since Wayne Gretzky glided across the ice in Southern California.
Penner scored 17:42 into overtime and the Kings are headed to the Stanley Cup finals for the second time as a franchise after beating the Phoenix Coyotes 4-3 in Game 5 of the Western Conference finals Tuesday night.
"I got a lucky bounce," Penner said. "I just waited for it to settle down, and I got a chance to get it in the net."
The kings of the road, Los Angeles will play for hockey's ultimate prize for the first time since 1993 after taking down the Western Conference's top three seeds.
The Kings knocked off No. 1 Vancouver, the Presidents' Trophy winner, No. 2 St. Louis and rounded it out with a five-game win over the No. 3 Coyotes in the conference finals to become the second No. 8 seed ? along with Edmonton in 2006 ? to reach the Stanley Cup finals.
They played hard, utilized their skill and size, and won away from home like no other team in NHL history.
After losing Game 4 at home, Los Angeles closed out Phoenix in the desert for its NHL record eighth straight road victory of the playoffs. The Kings became the first team to go undefeated on the road en route to the Stanley Cup finals and have won 10 straight road playoff games over two seasons, another record.
Anze Kopitar scored Los Angeles' fifth short-handed goal of the playoffs, Drew Doughty had a goal an assist, and Mike Richards also scored for Los Angeles. Jonathan Quick had some big saves in the third period and overtime, and Penner capped it by gathering a bouncing puck and beating Smith for his third goal of the playoffs.
Next up for the Kings is a trip to the New York metropolitan area. They will play Game 1 on May 30 at either the New York Rangers or the New Jersey Devils. Los Angeles last played in the final round 19 years ago, vs. Montreal.
"There hasn't been much success as an organization, but we've got an opportunity to play for the Cup," said Kings captain Dustin Brown, who angered the Coyotes with a hit that knocked defenseman Michal Rozsival from the game just before Penner's goal. "But there's still a lot of work to be done."
The Coyotes avoided being swept out of their first conference finals with a gutty win in Los Angeles on Sunday. They couldn't extend the series another game despite jumping on the Kings early, unable to stop Los Angeles' waves of skilled players or Penner's final shot.
Taylor Pyatt had a goal and an assist, Marc-Antoine Pouliot and Keith Yandle also scored, and Smith made some superb saves while facing 51 shots.
"I have been knocked out in the first round a lot and you think it is going to feel better when you get to the next round, but I don't care when you get knocked out," Coyotes captain Shane Doan said. "It feels awful and you don't want to be a part of it and you wish you could keep going."
Los Angeles blew one chance to put away the pesky Coyotes. Leading the series 3-0 and playing at home, the Kings couldn't match Phoenix's intensity in Game 4 and lost 2-0, giving the Coyotes a glimmer of hope.
What they didn't want to do is give them momentum.
Phoenix has been as good as any team in the league when the confidence is rolling, using an 11-game winning streak in February to get back into the playoff race and a five-game surge to close out its first NHL division title.
The Kings had come through in this spot once before, defeating Vancouver on the road after failing to complete the sweep at home in Game 4.
They didn't seem ready to do it again.
Riding the confidence carryover from Game 4, the Coyotes dominated early, controlling the puck, giving the Kings little room in the neutral zone or anywhere else. Phoenix had some good scoring chances early and Pyatt cashed in on a power play, redirecting Martin Hanzal's one-timer in the slot 4:20 into the game.
Despite numerous other good chances, including a couple on a power play, the Coyotes couldn't get another puck past Quick in the first period. Adding to it, the Kings snatched a little momentum back with Kopitar's shorthanded goal, on a redirect of a shot by Doughty after Smith was called for icing.
"We didn't capitalize on a power play early, a couple other opportunities, couldn't push the game along," Coyotes coach Dave Tippett said. "We knew it was going to be a tight game. It ended up that way."
The second period wound up being a shootout.
Pouliot gave Phoenix the lead back by flipping a backhander past Quick on a loose puck in front for his first career playoff goal. Doughty tied it a few minutes later, scoring from just inside the blue line on a shot Smith had trouble seeing through traffic.
Richards scored on rebound to put Los Angeles up 3-2, Yandle tied it again after a pass by Pyatt caromed off his right leg past Quick.
Both teams had numerous scoring chances in a hectic third period, but both goalies made some superb saves.
They went back and forth in the overtime, too, until Penner finally ended it when a shot by Jeff Carter caromed out front to him in the slot.
"It's the biggest goal of my career so far," Penner said. "Hopefully, there are a couple more waiting in the finals."
NOTES: Coyotes RW Radim Vrbata had an assist on Pyatt's goal for his first point in eight games. ... Los Angeles was 2 for 27 in the series on the power play after going 0 for 4 in Game 5. ... Yandle had nine points in the playoffs, matching Dave Babych's team record for a defenseman set in 1985. ... The Kings are the seventh team to reach the Stanley Cup finals in 14 games (12-2) since the NHL went to a four-round best-of-seven series format in 1987.

LAS VEGAS?? It's been a long, strange trip for what appears to be several tiny chips of lunar rock that found their way into a casino mogul's hands after being collected by the first men on the moon.
If they're real, they were plucked from the lunar surface by Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin, given by then-President Richard Nixon to former Nicaraguan dictator Anastasio Somoza Garcia, pilfered by a Costa Rican mercenary soldier-turned Contra rebel, traded to a Baptist missionary for unknown items, then sold to a flamboyant Las Vegas casino mogul who squirreled them away in a safety deposit box.
Now, more than 2? years after Bob Stupak's death, an attorney for his estate has sent to NASA officials in Houston a tabletop display featuring the four gray chips the size of grains of rice. They're magnified in a Lucite dome about as big around as a U.S. 50-cent piece set with a small blue and white Nicaraguan flag. Combined, the chips weigh 0.05 grams.
More space news from msnbc.com
Science editor Alan Boyle's blog: The real-life astronomer who inspired the alien-hunting character in ?Contact? is retiring from her research post ? but she isn't giving up on the SETI quest.
Renee Juhans, NASA inspector general executive officer, confirmed Tuesday that the agency was "taking steps to authenticate" the display it received from attorney Richard Wright. Juhans declined to say what would happen after that.
Wright said he expects that if the chips are authentic, they'll be returned to the people of the Central American country. If not, he said they should be sent back to him.
"I told them it was either Stupak's or Nicaragua's," said Wright, who said he counseled Stupak when ownership questions were raised more than a decade ago not to try to sell or auction the display.
The tiny rocks can be considered priceless or worthless, said Joe Gutheinz, a retired NASA investigator and moon rock hunter who has spent decades on a quest to find 160 missing moon rock samples around the world.
"In a sense, they're worthless because you can't sell them," Gutheinz said by telephone this week from his law office in Friendswood, Texas. "But for people who love space, you can't put a price on it."
They're part of a limited supply of about 842 pounds of rock collected by U.S. astronauts in six missions between Apollo 11 in 1969 and Apollo 17 in 1972. The Soviet Union collected about 300 grams of rock, or about two-thirds of a pound, during unmanned probes to the moon.
Gutheinz said the U.S. distributed 270 moon rock samples in the 1970s as a goodwill gesture to countries around the world. States received 100 samples and territories received six. The United Nations received a sample from the Apollo 11 mission.
NASA has conceded it lost track of some of the 26,000 samples of moon rock and other space material loaned to researchers and museums. The agency inspector general said last December that more than 500 pieces were reported missing since 1970.
The tiny chips that made their way to Stupak by 1987 apparently were a gift to Nicaragua.
Stupak was a wheeler, dealer and gambler of the first order. He won a $1 million wager on Super Bowl XXIII and a World Series of Poker championship bracelet, both in 1989; nearly died in a motorcycle crash in 1995; and lost a bid in 2006 to become lieutenant governor of Nevada.
For a time, Wright said, the lunar stones were displayed at the Moon Rock Cafe at Bob Stupak's Vegas World casino, which featured a rocket ship logo and big sign declaring "Sky's the Limit." The display went into storage after Stupak replaced the place with the tallest structure on the Las Vegas Strip, the 1,149-foot Stratosphere tower resembling the iconic Space Needle in Seattle.
Stupak bought the rocks for $10,000 and 200,000 shares in his casino from Arizona preacher and businessman Harry Coates, according to documents provided by Wright and the recollections of Coates' widow, Silvina Coates.
Harry Coates, a Baptist minister and missionary, met his wife in 1985 during a mission to Costa Rica. He died in July 2005 in Arizona at age 85.
Silvina Coates, of Casa Grande, Ariz., recalled Tuesday that her husband had lots of side business deals, including one with a man in Costa Rica for the moon rock display. She couldn't remember what the trade involved.
Wright has a copy of Stupak's $10,000 check to Harry Coates' business, Midway Development Inc., along with an affidavit describing how Coates acquired the display from a man named Bob Stone of Golfito, Costa Rica.
The display had been picked from a pile of looted items by an unnamed Costa Rican mercenary fighting with Nicaraguan soldiers when a Somoza compound dubbed "El Retire" was sacked "at the time of the revolution in Nicaragua," according to the affidavit. It said the mercenary later switched sides to fight for the Contras, before returning to Costa Rica in 1979.
"Bob bought it in good faith," Wright said.
Stupak wanted to sell the display a little more than a decade ago. He offered Wright 10 percent of the proceeds if he could help, then upped the offer to 25 percent.
Wright counseled him that he couldn't auction or sell it, because whether it had been lost or stolen, it wasn't clear that Stupak had any legal right to own it.
After Stupak died, Wright contacted NASA and the Nicaraguan consulate about returning the display.
Wright obtained a written promise in April from NASA attorney Cedric Campbell that if the rock display is authentic, "NASA will return the rock to the people of Nicaragua."
Gutheinz, who teaches an online University of Phoenix course and enlists student sleuths to find missing moon rocks, said the sample sounded authentic. He said he expects an ownership fight in Nicaragua.
But that'll just provide another chapter for one of the many stories Gutheinz tells about moon rock samples. He said his students have helped find 79 displays since 2002.
Governors took them home in Colorado, West Virginia and Missouri, he said. A display given to then-Arkansas Gov. Bill Clinton turned up in archived materials after Clinton became president.
"Here, the attorney did the right thing," Gutheinz said. "He told NASA, and they're in the process of turning it over properly. We can only hope that Nicaragua gets its property back."

Still rockin' Windows Mobile 6.x? Time to check all your apps for updates one last time. Microsoft has issued a final reminder that, beginning today, the Marketplace for 6.x devices will no longer be available. This means you won't be able to browse, buy or download apps from your phone via the service. Everything you already have will, of course, work just fine, but if you needed to reinstall something -- now is the time to do it. Unless it's available direct from third party sites, in which case you'll have a little breathing space. Still, better safe than sorry.
