Westinghouse 110-inch 4K TV to ship alongside 65, 55 and 50-inch models in Q1

Westinghouse 110inch 4K TV to ship in Q1 alongside 65, 55 and 50inch models

Westinghouse has yet to become the premium HDTV manufacturer it one day hopes to be, and if the past is any indication, flooding the market with low-cost sets won't drive you to the top. But the promise of high resolution might at least yield a modest bump. The company's 2013 lineup is set to be dominated by 4K models, each packing 3840 x 2160-pixel panels for an "amazing" and "affordable" experience. The company's flagship rings in at a massive 110 diagonal inches and will be available for custom order beginning sometime in Q1. 50, 55 and 65-inch versions will also ship within the same timeframe, offering the same resolution and a modest 120Hz native refresh rate. We're still waiting to hear back on pricing and a hint of where you might be able to pick one of these UHDTVs up beginning early next year, but if the press release after the break is any indication, we're about to be inundated with high-res, low-cost televisions at next month's CES.

Green steel inventor wins innovation award | Eco News ...

Leading Australian researcher Professor Veena Sahajwalla has won the $30,000 top prize in the Innovation Challenge awards run by The Australian newspaper.

A passionate recycler, she was honoured for her patented ?green steel? process, in which old rubber tyres and plastic are used to replace some of the coke in the electric arc furnaces that generate power for the production of steel.

The revolutionary approach has been commercialised locally and overseas by Australia?s largest manufacturer of long steel products, OneSteel.

As a result it has already prevented more than a million tyres from ending up in landfill and helped reduced greenhouse gas emissions.

Scientia Professor Sahajwalla is director of the University of New South Wales Centre for Sustainable Materials Research and Technology.

Her interest in mining the mountains of rubbish and waste materials produced by modern society and re-using them in industrial processes or to create new goods was sparked early in life.

?As a child growing up in India I walked to school past huge waste dumps picked over by desperately poor communities,? she said.

?I always wanted to turn that waste into something we could absorb back into industrial production.?

The Australian, a News Limited publication, reported that the innovation competition attracted hundreds of entries, including a folding flat-pack house; a DNA test that would help breed horns out of beef cattle; a wave energy converter; a computer program that allows students to conduct laboratory experiments on the internet; and do-it-yourself hearing aids.

Professor Sahajwalla won the $5000 prize in the Manufacturing and Hi-tech Design category of the competition as well as the overall $25,000 prize.

She is Associate Dean Strategic Industry Relations of the UNSW Faculty of Science and is one of Australia?s best-known engineers and scientists, having been a judge on the ABC TV program The New Inventors.

She has received many awards including the 2011 National Nokia Business Innovation Award at the Telstra Business Women?s Awards and the Banksia Environmental Foundation?s 2012 GE Eco Innovation Award for Individual Excellence.

In May she was appointed as a commissioner on the Australian government?s Climate Commission.

Co$t of Doing Business' Greatest Hits ? 2012 Edition - Finance ...

Beer ? craft beer, that is ? actually plays a role in an area?s economic vibrancy.

That was one of many trends that Finance and Commerce?s Cost of Doing Business noted in 2012.

Quality of life, including access to well-crafted suds, encourages more talented people to live and work in Minnesota, and helps mitigate business-related fees and taxes that certainly are not the lowest in the country.

It makes sense, then, that 14 of the 20 high income areas listed by the U.S. Census Bureau?s 2010 American Community Survey were also on a Scarborough Research list of the top 20 local markets for microbrew drinkers. And Minneapolis-St. Paul was one of the areas that made both lists.

The role quality of life plays in supporting businesses is but one of a number of themes that Cost of Doing Business has returned to since it started a year and half ago.

In case you haven?t been keeping track, here are summaries of some of the top blog posts from 2012:

Beer equals economic growth

Smart, gifted people can pretty much live anywhere in the world they want to, so communities need to care about quality of life if they want to be successful. That means access to good schools, low crime, great restaurant and entertainment options, professional sports teams, theaters, museums, etc. The list could go on and on. But it seems quality, locally produced beer should be on there, too.

?

How businesses learned to stop worrying and love government

For two years, the state Legislature gave local governments more leeway than usual when it came to spending property tax dollars on private development. From 2010 to 2012, a wide range of businesses took advantage, with $35.9 million going to building projects that were worth at least $510.6 million. As much as business owners complain about government regulations and taxes, I wonder how many jump at the chance to get a sweet deal from government when it becomes available.

?

Minnesota less business-friendly on property taxes

The Minnesota Taxpayers Association and the Cambridge, Mass.-based Lincoln Institute of Land Policy produce an annual 50-state property tax comparison study. Look at the study for the 2010 tax year and then compare with 2011. Minnesota rose in the rankings when it came to the taxes that a commercial property owner paid in a typical urban area or a typical rural area.

?

Is innovation always good?

The nonprofit Stateline news reported on a University of Iowa study that found Minnesota among the states with the highest ?state policy innovation rate? from 1912 to 2009. The study included more liberal measures such as bottle deposit laws, and more conservative measures such as gay marriage bans. Some ?innovative? measures certainly lead to regrets. Nevertheless, wouldn?t Minnesota?s reputation as a forward-thinking state help out its companies as they do business?

?

Minnesota ranks poorly on workers? compensation costs

High workers? compensation costs are a common complaint among Minnesota businesses ? a complaint born out in an annual state-by-state comparison of workers? compensation insurance rates conducted by the Oregon Department of Consumer and Business Services. The Oregon study found that Minnesota employers paid $2.27 per $100 of payroll for workers? compensation in 2010 ? the 16th highest rate among the states, up from 24th in 2008.

?

Restaurant licensing and inspection fees vary greatly across Minnesota

Where a restaurant is located matters a lot when it comes to licensing and inspection fees in Minnesota, according to a Minnesota Restaurant Association study. The association found a small ma and pa restaurant in Minneapolis would have paid $945 in fees in 2011, versus $635 in Anoka County or $474 in Ramsey County.

?

Report: Telecommuting pays off for everyone

Minnesota is ahead of many other states when it comes to promoting telecommuting, and both employers and their workers are benefitting from the practice, according to a report from the public-private partnership Connect Minnesota. Through telephone surveys conducted in 2011, Connect Minnesota found that 22 percent of Minnesota adults who are employed full-time or part-time work from home at least some of the time. Nearly a quarter of Minnesota telecommuters do it every day.

The stated goal of the blog since its start has been to examine the big and not-so-big expenses that businesses face in Minnesota and how they manage them.

As 2012 ends, I?m contemplating where I should take the blog in the coming year. So please share thoughts or ideas. What would you like me to investigate or delve into? What would actually be helpful to business owners?

Have an idea about a business cost that I should investigate? Call me at (612) 584-1546, or email me at chris.newmarker@finance-commerce.com. I?m also on Twitter @newmarker.

Autopsy: NY gunman shot self, not hit by police

The gunman who lured two firefighters to their deaths died of a self-inflicted shot to the head and wasn't hit by return fire from a police officer, New York State Police said Thursday.

But investigators still hadn't made a positive identification of the body found in William Spengler's burned house. They have said they believe the remains are those of his 67-year-old sister, Cheryl Spengler, who also lived in the house near Rochester.

Autopsies showed that West Webster volunteer firefighter Michael Chiapperini died of a single gunshot and Tomasz Kaczowka was killed by two, police said.

Spengler set a car on fire and touched off an "inferno" in his Webster home on a strip of land along the Lake Ontario shore, took up a sniper's position and opened fire on the first firefighters to arrive at about 5:30 a.m. on Christmas Eve, authorities said. He wounded two other firefighters and an off-duty police officer who was on his way to work.

A Webster police officer who had accompanied the firefighters shot back at Spengler with a rifle in a brief exchange of gunfire before the gunman killed himself.

Trooper Mark O'Donnell said investigators weren't releasing information about how Spengler got the military-style Bushmaster .223-caliber semiautomatic rifle, 12-gauge shotgun and .38-caliber revolver found with his body. He said they're still tracing the history of the guns. Spengler spent 17 years in prison for killing his grandmother in 1980 and was barred from possessing weapons as a convicted felon.

Police have said they believe Spengler used the rifle to attack the firefighters because of the distances involved, but O'Donnell said that hadn't been confirmed by ballistics tests. The rifle, which had a combat-style flash suppressor, is similar to the one used by the gunman who massacred 20 children and six women in a Newtown, Conn., elementary school earlier this month.

The wounded firefighters, Joseph Hofstetter and Theodore Scardino, were upgraded Wednesday to satisfactory condition at Rochester's Strong Memorial Hospital.

The hospital released a statement from them saying they were "humbled and a bit overwhelmed by the outpouring of well wishes for us and our families."

The Spengler siblings had lived in the home with their mother, Arline Spengler, who died in October. In all, seven houses were destroyed by the flames.

Investigators found a rambling, typed letter laying out Spengler's intention to destroy his neighborhood and "do what I like doing best, killing people."

He had been released from parole in 2006 on the manslaughter conviction and authorities said they had had no encounters with him since.

Police Chief Gerald Pickering said police may never know Spengler's motive.

Chiapperini, who also was a police lieutenant, was driving a pumper with Scardino on board when bullets blasted the windshield. He and Kaczowka died at the scene. Hofstetter was hit in the pelvis, and Scardino was shot in the shoulder and knee.

The passing off-duty officer from the neighboring town of Greece was treated for shrapnel wounds from gunfire that hit his car.

Calling hours for Chiapperini and Kaczowka will be at Webster Schroeder High School on Friday and Saturday. A funeral for Chiapperini is scheduled for Sunday at the school, with burial in West Webster Cemetery.

A funeral Mass for Kaczowka, who worked as a Monroe County emergency dispatcher, will be held Monday in Rochester at St. Stanislaus Church, with burial at Holy Sepulchre Cemetery.

Hammocks Trading Company restaurant review, Sandy Springs

$$

$$

In our Internet-driven age of information saturation, being a critic can be tricky.

To remain completely devoid of preconceptions after reading first-responder blog posts or crowd-sourced reviews often requires conscious effort, which is why I always try to avoid over researching potentially reviewable restaurants. Now more than ever, objectivity is a skill. Walking in the door with inflated expectations is often unfair to the chef, while believing every online nitpicker can make a mediocre meal pleasantly surprising.

When I decided to try Hammocks Trading Company in Sandy Springs, I had no expectations to overcome, knowing nothing about the restaurant or the chef. I knew it was seafood, but that?s it.

I had no idea that executive chef and partner William Sigley spent seven years in Las Vegas working under the likes of Todd English and Wolfgang Puck before moving to Atlanta to lead the kitchens of Aquanox, Aja, and Bone?s. Nor was I

AJC Dining Team member Jon Watson writes about popular eats.

aware that co-owner and front-of-the-house manager Jason Sheetz was once general manager of Twist and area director of other Here 2 Serve restaurants such as Prime and Goldfish. I was a blank slate.

As I first enter the stand-alone building on Roswell Road, however, the snap judgments begin. Wood-paneled walls of white and pastel blue evoke memories of every Gulf Coast beach condo I?ve rented, punctuated by the namesake hammocks scattered across the ceiling. The feel is coastal Carolina beach shack, where a round or two of Jimmy Buffet tunes is moments away from erupting out of a hidden jukebox.

But as we sit for our first pre-meal cocktail, where I expect overly sweet margaritas, instead I find sips of an eye-poppingly delicious Horse?s Neck ($8). I find myself ordering a second round of the crisp bourbon and ginger beer libation, enjoying an acidic kick of the ginger-lime syrup. Following that up with the swarthy El Diablo ($8), a smoky blend of mezcal, lime, creme de cassis and ginger beer, and I?m realizing that there is more to this place than I first suspected.

The cuisine is primarily coastal seafood, with Baja influences, and the heavy focus on small plates makes this a meal great for sharing with friends. A much more casual menu than he?s crafted at previous restaurants, Sigley?s experience in fine dining shines through in finesse and balanced flavors.

Many of the expected standbys make the menu, like honkin? peel and eat shrimp ( $7/half-dozen) and steamed oysters ($7/half-dozen), but few true beach dives offer something as subtle as Sigley?s spicy and sour pickled shrimp atop cornmeal fried green tomato ($6.50).

Bivalve fans can leave with a full stomach and a pile of half shells, as I didn?t find a single oyster I didn?t enjoy. Like all the seafood I taste here, the freshness is obvious while we slurp down a dozen raw ($13). But the grilled oysters with simple melted compound barbecue butter ($15/dozen) can turn a raw-only enthusiast like myself into a convert.

But while I enjoy our bowl of steamed mussels ($7.50) well enough, I?m left wishing for a more developed white wine and garlic broth than what arrives. The flavors are there but fall a little flat for my liking. Perhaps if the ?grilled bread? was more of a buttery charred sponge of baguette or ciabatta instead of the thin, crunchy wafers that accompany the dish, the under seasoned broth would be less of an issue. The shortcoming of the mussels stand out even more prominently next to Sigley?s wonderfully unrefined but deeply flavorful bowl of chef?s fish soup ($15.50). Each spoonful goes down quickly, with the rich shellfish broth stealing the show.

Some dishes stay true to the Southern coastal cuisine, such as a bowl of thick shrimp and crab gumbo ($6.50), and others blend those flavors with a touch of California. A south coast ceviche, with vinegary hunks of scallop, shrimp and fish, accented with mango, cilantro, red onion and fresh jalapeno, is one part Baja, one part Charleston. And Sigley adds some very successful sophistication to a plate of perfectly cooked, buttery scallops

atop butternut squash drizzled with black truffle and an apple cider reduction. This remains the biggest crowd pleaser of my visits.

In some ways, Hammocks presents a conundrum. On the surface, you have a casual, reasonably priced seafood kitchen, a place to relax with friends and enjoy the familiar dishes of the Southern coast. But, on the other, Sigley laces his menu with several pleasant surprises, and more than a few mouthfuls that showcase his depth of skill to the point where they almost seem out of place here.

Even in his weakest showings, Sigley?s worst dishes here are pretty decent, with the majority of the menu consistently better than most in its class, peppered with flashes of brilliance. Sure, there are certainly better overall plates of refined seafood to be had in the city if you are looking for splurge, but if it is a laid-back and affordable seafood feast you are after, Hammocks is worth a drive.

New info in deadly Ogden hit-and-run - Salt Lake City, Utah News

Posted on: 9:32 pm, December 26, 2012, by Ben Winslow, updated on: 09:43pm, December 26, 2012

OGDEN, Utah ? Police released a new vehicle description involved in a hit-and-run crash on Wall Ave., where a homeless man was hit and left to die on the street.

Police said 56-year-old David Paul Saures was walking across Wall Ave. on Christmas Eve, when he was struck by a car. The impact threw him 100 feet. He was pronounced dead at the hospital, police said.

On Tuesday, Ogden police told FOX 13 that a dark-colored sedan hit Saures. But now they believe that vehicle may have witnessed the crash.

?We?re getting information now that it was possibly a minivan, some sort of a dark-colored minivan that actually struck the man,? said Ogden Police Lt. Chad Ledford. ?The dark-colored sedan was behind the minivan, so we think they were a witness to the accident and we want them to come forward as well.?

Ledford said Wednesday there was no indication that the driver of the vehicle that hit?Saures had even braked. Because it was dark and there may have been weather, it could have been an accident, he said, but because the driver did not stay ? it is now being investigated as a felony.

?I have no doubt that they knew they hit something, and I?m going to assume they knew they hit a person and that?s why they didn?t stay,? Ledford said.

Saures? brother told FOX 13 he hoped the driver would come forward ? but had forgiven that person even if they never did.

?I don?t know what society?s turning into, but like Jesus said, ?Love one another.? That?s all we can do. Forgive and be forgiven,? Robert Moore said Wednesday. ?The thing is, you go through life, sometimes you forget there?s going to be a time after life.?

Ogden police said anyone with information about the crash is asked to call them at (801)? 629-8221.

Philadelphia Mesothelioma Attorneys - T Cell Immunotherapy ...

December 26, 2012 ? Researchers at the University of Pennsylvania?s Abramson Cancer Center continue to work on a new approach to treating leukemia using genetically engineered T cell immunotherapy.? The promising treatment involves a gene therapy technique utilizing the sick patient?s own immune cells, which are called T cells, to fight cancer cells. In this technique, T Cells are removed from the patient, genetically modified or changed in the laboratory using a gene modification technique, and are then infused back into the patient?s body following chemotherapy.

The modification process permits the T Cells to identify the cancer cells as foreign. When they are reintroduced back into a cancer patient?s body, they hunt down and destroy the cancer cells by targeting a single molecule, CD-19, that is found on certain types of cancer cells.? Although there are side effects, sometimes severe, that can occur with this new therapy including fever and chills, they have been witnessed to be short lived, lasting about a week.

Early Study Shows Some Patients Experience Complete Remission

The researchers conducted an earlier study that included 10 adult patients and 2 children with advanced chemotherapy-resistant leukemia.? Two of the first 3 patients are still in full remission, cancer free, more than two years after receiving the genetically engineered T cells.? Nine of the 12 patients showed a positive response to the therapy.? These findings were reported last year in publications of the New England Journal of Medicine? and Science Translational Medicine.? The researchers presented their latest results this month at the American Society of Hematology?s Annual Meeting and Exposition.

The pioneer behind this gene therapy is Dr. Carl June, professor in Immunotherapy in the Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine as well as the director of Translational Research in Penn?s Abramson Cancer Center.? It is the hope that this advanced treatment for leukemia and lymphoma will someday be the therapy of choice over the more traditional bone marrow transplant, which carries a substantial mortality risk of at least 20 percent.? In addition, it is the hope that this therapy can be even further developed to include other cancers and malignancies such as cancers of the lung, breast, pancreas, prostrate, ovaries, and other blood cancers as well as mesothelioma.

Recently, the University of Pennsylvania and Novartis announced that they have joined together to conduct additional studies to further develop and manufacture the immunotherapy technologies.? In addition, they plan to build a Center for Advanced Cellular Therapies (CACT) in Philadelphia.

A clinical trial for the modified T-cell immunotherapy is currently underway.? They are seeking adult patients suffering from chronic lymphocytic leukemia to participate.? More information is available on the Abramson Cancer Center website ?or by calling toll free at 855-216-0098.

Philadelphia Mesothelioma Lawyers at the Shein Law Center Support Penn?s Abramson Cancer Center in the Fight Against Cancer

Philadelphia mesothelioma attorney, Benjamin Shein, is optimistic and hopeful that this new immunotherapy will prove to be lifesaving for those individuals who are diagnosed with certain blood cancers as well as the hope that it will prove beneficial for other types of cancer as well.? The Shein Law Center and the Benjamin Shein Family Foundation?support research at the Abramson Cancer Center and Penn Medicine?s Mesothelioma & Pleural Program.

The mesothelioma attorneys at Shein Law Center have been working with victims of asbestos-related diseases including mesothelioma and lung cancer for over 25 years.? We are local attorneys in the Philadelphia-South Jersey region committed to seeking justice and compensation for those individuals and their families in our community who are suffering from the devastating effects of asbestos exposure.? If you or a loved one has been exposed to asbestos or diagnosed with mesothelioma or any other asbestos-related disease, contact the Shein Law Center today at 877-SHEINLAW (743-4652) to schedule a free and confidential consultation or fill out our online contact form.? We maintain offices in Center City Philadelphia and Pennsauken, New Jersey, but will meet with you and your family at a location convenient to you.
