Discovery may lead to new tomato varieties with vintage flavor and quality

ScienceDaily (June 28, 2012) ? A new discovery could make more tomatoes taste like heirlooms, reports an international research team headed by a University of California, Davis, plant scientist.

The finding, which will be reported in the June 29 issue of the journal Science, has significant implications for the U.S. tomato industry, which annually harvests more than 15 million tons of the fruit for processing and fresh-market sales.

"This information about the gene responsible for the trait in wild and traditional varieties provides a strategy to recapture quality characteristics that had been unknowingly bred out of modern cultivated tomatoes," said Ann Powell, a biochemist in UC Davis' Department of Plant Sciences and one of the lead authors of the study.

"Now that we know that some of the qualities that people value in heirloom tomatoes can be made available in other types of tomatoes, farmers can have access to more varieties of tomatoes that produce well and also have desirable color and flavor traits," she said.

For decades, plant breeders in the tomato industry have selected varieties that are uniformly light green before they ripen, in order to produce tomatoes that can be harvested at the same time.

However, this characteristic is accompanied by an unintended reduction in sugars that compromises the flavor of the fresh fruit and its desirability for processing.

Powell's UC Davis research team began studying the genes influencing tomato fruit development and ripening after spending two summers screening tomato plants for transcription factors that might play a role in both fruit color and quality. Transcription factors are proteins that regulate genes, or turn them on and off. These factors themselves are manufactured or expressed by genes.

The UC Davis researchers were particularly interested in tomatoes they observed in the field that were unusually dark green before they ripened.

Partnering with researchers at Cornell University and in Spain, who were mapping regions of the tomato genome, the scientists discovered two transcription factors, called GLK1 and GLK2, that control the development of chloroplasts. Chloroplasts are the structures in the plant cells that enable plants to photosynthesize, converting the energy of sunlight into sugars and other compounds that influence flavor and color.

The researchers scoured a collection of mutant and wild species of tomatoes at UC Davis established at UC Davis by the late Professor Charles Rick beginning in the 1950s. They discovered that dark green tomatoes that naturally express GLK2 produced ripe fruit with increased levels of sugars or soluble solids, important for processing tomatoes, as well as higher levels of the health-promoting compound lycopene.

"Nature presents numerous important genes and their variants, like uniform ripening, that breeders employ to facilitate the needs of growers, processors and consumers," said Jim Giovannoni, a USDA plant molecular biologist with the Boyce Thompson Institute at Cornell University. "Understanding the genes responsible for these characteristics facilitates the challenging process of breeding crops that meet the needs of all components of the food-supply chain."

Cuong Nguyen, a Cornell graduate student in Giovannoni's laboratory co-authored the paper with Powell. Other members of the research team included: Theresa Hill, KaLai Lam Cheng, Rosa Figueroa-Balderas, Hakan Aktas, Hamid Ashrafi, Ariel Vicente, Javier Lopez-Baltazar, Roger Chetelat, Allen Van Deynze and Alan Bennett, all of UC Davis; Yongsheng Liu and Cornelius Barry of Cornell University and the Boyce Thompson Institute of the USDA; Clara Pons and Antonio Granell, of the Universidad Polit?cnica de Valencia, Spain; Rafael Fern?ndez-Mu?oz of the Universidad de M?laga, Spain.

Funding for the study was provided by The University of California Discovery program, the U.S. Department of Agriculture-Agricultural Research Service, the National Science Foundation, the Viet Nam Education Foundation, the Fundaci?n Genoma Espa?a, and the Ministerio de Ciencia y Tecnolog?a and the Instituto Tecn?logico de Costa Rica.

Lab-on-a-chip detects trace levels of toxic vapors in homes near Utah Air Force Base

ScienceDaily (June 26, 2012) ? A lab-on-a-chip technology that measures trace amounts of air contaminants in homes was successfully field-tested by researchers at the University of Michigan.

Even in the presence of 50 other indoor air contaminants, the U-M-built microsystem found levels of the targeted contaminant so low that it would be analogous to finding a particular silver dollar in a roll stretching from Detroit to Salt Lake City.

"This is the first (known) study of its kind," said Ted Zellers, professor in the U-M School of Public Health and the Department of Chemistry, and project director.

"Most lab-on-a-chip technologies are used for biomedical analysis of liquids," Zellers said. "Our technology is designed for monitoring contaminants in the air, and this groundbreaking study is the first to prove that it can work outside the laboratory in real-life applications."

The applications are potentially limitless because the device, called a microfabricated gas chromatograph, can be tailored to detect any contaminants, Zellers said. For instance, the team is adapting the same technology to detect certain industrial chemicals in the breath and saliva of exposed workers, biomarkers of cancer and other chronic disease, and markers of explosives for airport screening applications.

The Department of Defense contracted the U-M team to adapt and test two prototypes devices in homes near Utah's Hill Air Force Base to measure indoor concentrations of trichloroethylene, or TCE. TCE was used on military bases until the 1970s, and improper disposal caused TCE to become a pervasive groundwater contaminant that can seep into homes above plumes.

"The core microfabricated silicon chips, when stacked, are roughly the size of a wristwatch," Zellers said. They require less power and can be made smaller and less expensively than traditionally manufactured counterparts.

The microsystem was designed and built by faculty and students affiliated with the Center for Wireless Integrated MicroSensing and Systems in the College of Engineering.

Zellers said the group is currently negotiating with several companies interested in commercializing the technology.

A series of articles describing the results appeared this month in the journal Environmental Science & Technology.?

What is secretly eating away at your 401k

The goal of investing in a 401k is to make money for your retirement, however, in a?volatile?market, losses taken can drastically impact your?nest egg. In addition to the risk of investments, if you?re using mutual funds in your 401k you could be paying?exorbitant?fees even when you lose money. CNN explains danger of hidden fees in mutual funds:

According to a recent?AARP survey, 71% of people with 401(k)s didn?t even know they were paying fees for their retirement accounts.

So how much do these fees really cost you?

The answer may shock you.?Fees can, on average, reduce your 401(k) balance by up to 30%, regardless of whether you have $1 or $1 million in your retirement account.

What are these fees, then, that are taking such a big bite out of your retirement account? There are four kinds: administrative fees, marketing fees (sometimes called 12-b1 fees), investment management fees and trading costs.

The first three types of fees are shown, as an aggregate total, in each mutual fund?s expense ratio, and are generally reported in your 401(k)?s ?summary documents? as a percentage of assets.

But the investment industry disagrees, arguing that such costs are justified because mutual fund expenses are regulated by the competition of the free market, and what consumers are paying is simply the cost of doing business.

The problem with this argument is that it?s not true.

Index funds, for example, have often outperformed actively managed mutual funds while charging a small fraction of the fees. But investing more in index funds will not come close to fixing the broken, expensive 401(k) system.

Beaten candidate, under graft probe, leaves Egypt

Khaled El Fiqi/EPA, file

Ahmed Shafiq lost the Egyptian presidential race to Muslim Brotherhood-backed candidate Mohammed Morsi.

By NBC News, msnbc.com and news services

CAIRO - Defeated Egyptian presidential candidate Ahmed Shafiq left Egypt on Tuesday, local sources reported,?a day after a prosecutor referred?corruption lawsuits naming him to an investigating judge.

The state news agency MENA said Shafik left Cairo airport?unaccompanied on a United Arab Emirates airline early on?Tuesday.?Shafik was on his way to a religious?pilgrimage, aides said.

Shafik's rival Mohammed Morsi?of the Muslim Brotherhood was?declared winner of a presidential run-off on Sunday.

NBC Chief Foreign Correspondent Richard Engel walks through crowded Tahrir Square as demonstrators celebrate the victory of Egypt's first Muslim Brotherhood President.

A judicial?source said the general prosecutor had transferred graft cases?against Shafik to the investigating judge on Monday, Reuters reported.

The lawsuits allege that Shafik, a former air force?commander, was involved in corrupt land deals and other?corruption during his time as civil aviation minister between?2002 and 2011, the source said.

"Ahmed Shafik left today at dawn for Abu Dhabi and from?there he will head to the holy lands of Saudi Arabia to perform?the Omra (pilgrimage) before returning to his homeland Egypt,''?Shafik's campaign team said on his official Facebook page.

A supporter of Egypt's losing presidential candidate Ahmed Shafiq reacts after hearing that he was defeated by Muslim Brotherhood leader, Mohamed Morsi, in Cairo on Sunday.

Morsi, who like many Brotherhood figures spent time in jail?during Hosni Mubarak's three-decade rule, said during the?election campaign that he was not out to settle scores against?the ousted leader's former associates, but that anyone who had?broken the law must be held to account.

Now Morsi faces a daunting struggle for power with the still-dominant military rulers who took over after Mubarak was forced out in last year's Arab uprising. ?

Analysis: Egypt's big turn under Muslim Brotherhood

Mubarak made Shafik prime minister in January last year in?an attempt to end mass protests against his rule. A few days?later the president stepped down. Shafik lasted another three?weeks before he, too, resigned.

Shafik was seen by many as the preferred presidential?candidate of the generals who have ruled Egypt since Mubarak's?overthrow in February last year.

Big changes are in store for Egypt now that Mohammed Morsi of the Muslim Brotherhood, once banned in Egypt, has won Egypt's first democratic presidential election. NBC's Richard Engel reports.

A divisive figure, Shafik was seen as an outsider when the?election campaign began. But his tough law-and-order platform?appealed to many Egyptians tired of endless social and political?turmoil since Mubarak's overthrow.?

Egypt's Morsi: Bloodshed will not be in vain

In a military career spanning four decades, Shafik served in?wars with Israel and is credited with shooting down an Israeli?aircraft in the 1973 war.

As civil aviation minister from 2002 to 2011, he overhauled?the state airline EgyptAir and improved the country's airports.
