Rezwan Ferdaus, a Muslim-American from Ashland with a physics degree from Boston's Northeastern University, was arrested in September after federal employees posing as al-Qaida members delivered materials he had allegedly requested, including grenades, machine guns and what he believed was 24 pounds of C-4 explosives.

In the plea agreement, prosecutors and Ferdaus' lawyers say Ferdaus will plead guilty to attempting to provide material support to terrorists and attempting to damage and destroy federal buildings by means of an explosive. Prosecutors and defense attorneys have agreed to request a 17-year sentence.

Under the agreement, prosecutors have agreed to dismiss four other charges.

Authorities said the public was never in danger from the explosives, which they said were always under the control of federal officials during the sting operation.

Counter-terrorism experts and model-aircraft enthusiasts said it would be nearly impossible to inflict large-scale damage of the kind Ferdaus allegedly envisioned using model plane because the aircraft are too small, can't carry enough explosives and are too difficult to fly.

Authorities alleged that Ferdaus, 27, became convinced that America was evil. He allegedly contacted a federal informant and later began meeting to discuss the plot with undercover agents he believed were members of al-Qaida.

He was charged with planning to use three remote-controlled airplanes, each packed with five pounds of explosives, to blow up the Pentagon and U.S. Capitol.

At one point, Ferdaus allegedly told undercover agents that his desire to attack the United States was so strong, "I just can't stop. There is no other choice for me," according to a recorded conversation detailed in an affidavit filed in court.

Ferdaus' lawyers have suggested that the FBI ignored signs of mental illness in Ferdaus while investigating him.

During a bail hearing in November, an FBI agent acknowledged that the FBI had received reports about bizarre behavior by Ferdaus, including a report to Hopkinton police about one incident in which Ferdaus allegedly stood in the road not moving and appeared to have wet his pants.

Putnam Valley, NY. (July 11, 2012) A research team in the United Kingdom has found that insulin-like growth factor (IGF1) impacts cell transplantation of photoreceptor precursors by manipulating the retinal recipient microenvironment, enabling better migration and integration of the cells into the adult mouse retina.

Their study is published in the current issue of Cell Transplantation (21:5), now freely available on-line at http://www.ingentaconnect.com/content/cog/ct/.

"Photoreceptor death is an irreversible process and represents one of the largest causes of untreatable blindness in the developed world," said Dr. Rachael A. Pearson, study co-author and a member of the Department of Genetics, University College London Institute of Ophthalmology. "Stem cell replacement therapy offers a novel strategy for retinal repair, but since it is likely that a large number of cells would be needed to restore vision, enhancement of the process is needed."

In this study, the researchers used adeno-associated viral vectors (AAVs) to introduce three growth factors previously reported to play a role in photoreceptor development - IGF1, fibroblast growth factor (FGF2) and ciliary neurotrophic factor (CNTF) - into the retinas of adult mice. At three weeks post-transplantation, the number of integrated, differentiated photoreceptor cells present in the growth factor-treated retinas was compared to the untreated controls.

The researchers noted that all three growth factors are present during retinal development and all have been shown to affect photoreceptor differentiation. FGF2 has been shown to have varying effects based on the development stage of the cells to which it is applied. In addition, recent studies have shown that CNTF "acts transiently to suppress photoreceptor differentiation."

"AAV mediated expression of IGF1 led to significantly increased levels of cell integration," wrote the researchers. "However, over expression of FGF2 had no significant effect on cell numbers and CNTF led to a significant decrease in cell integration."

They concluded that it was possible to manipulate the environment of the recipient retina for photoreceptor cell transplantation using viral vectors, and that IGF1 provided a greater response.

"A potential consequence of IGF1 upregulation might be the improved or strengthened synaptic connectivity of the transplanted cells," said Dr. Pearson. "Newly born neurons, including photoreceptors, are vulnerable to pruning and apoptosis if appropriate synaptic connections with downstream targets are not formed and maintained."

The researchers noted that IGF1 has also been associated with the upregulation of brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF), an important modulator of synaptic plasticity in the adult brain after injury and along with exercise-induced cognitive function.

"This important study demonstrates that, by modifying the environment, growth factors impact cell transplantation survival," said Dr. John Sladek, professor of neurology and pediatrics at the University of Colorado School of Medicine. "While this study focused on the retina, growth factors also are believed to alter cell transplantation and survival in other brain regions which means that these findings should lead to more research on other serious neurological disorders."

Nature: Global Temperatures Are a Falling Trend

New submitter sosume writes "An article in Nature shows that temperatures in Roman times were actually higher than current temperatures. A team lead by Dr. Esper of the University of Mainz has researched tree rings and concluded that over the past 2,000 years, the forcing is up to four times as large as the 1.6W/m^2 net anthropogenic forcing since 1750 using evidence based on maximum latewood density data from northern Scandinavia, indicating that this cooling trend was stronger (0.31C per 1,000 years, ?0.03C) than previously reported, and demonstrated that this signature is missing in published tree-ring proxy records."

How Does Home Depot Offend Homophobic, Hateful, American Family

If your personal reason for boycotting Home Depot has been that they donate ungodly (pun intended) amounts of money to Republican politicians who want to destroy the middle class, and maybe, by miracle or a blow to the head or some stroke of good luck, Home Depot has finally realized people without homes or incomes don?t make good customers and this offends the AFA, you would be wrong, too. Talk about shooting - don?t they realize that while they advocate shooting other retailers they are shooting themselves in the foot with GOP donations?

Home Depot offended the hateful AFA members by ?signing on? as a festival vendor in the 2012 Philadelphia Pride Festival. As usual, it isn?t enough for the hateful group to simply make the announcement without bold-lettering their sensationalized rhetoric. Hatred and lies are Christian values that they must uphold in every mass mailing, right? Otherwise, they?d have to stop calling themselves a Christian group and claiming tax exempt status. Holy $! Can?t have that.

This time, they prey on the hatred of their millions of clueless members with this:

Home Depot signed on as a "festival" vendor, conducting Kid's Craft Workshops for children in the midst of lewd activities, including nudity and homosexual activities.
Home Depot doesn't see a problem associating itself with the celebration of depravity. But to operate a booth for the purpose of attracting children is unconscionable. The photos at right show the children's booth, although adults obscured our camera's view of the children.

(Note: If their cameraman didn?t plant the adult obstructionists or wait until someone finally stepped in the way to take his shot, I ask their god to strike me dead before I finish typing. This should keep you on the edge of your seat waiting for the end.)

AFA partners with Americans For Truth on this message. (Ever wonder why these groups choose names that in no way describe who they really are?) Their message,

?Home Depot knows that transvestites, cross-dressers, and the promotion of gay sex are mainstays at these events. This is where Home Depot set up a children's booth!?
tells me they don?t care about families; they care about spreading their homophobic beliefs by denying the children of pride parade supporters a booth at the parade. Nice people, huh? Wonder if they also wanted to snatch hotdogs, Popsicles, and sand-art bottles from those children? Deny them port-a-pot access? Wish them skinned knees?

The problem with this one is that I?m torn. Usually, when the AFA asks me to contact businesses and express their hateful views, I contact those people and thank them for ignoring this bunch of hateful, homophobic, hypocrites. It?s going to be hard for me to contact Home Depot and thank them for supporting the parade. Maybe it will feel better if I do that and add that I might consider shopping there when they stop donating make contributions to GOP candidates.

AFA's request:

TAKE ACTION
1. If you have not done so, sign the Boycott Pledge at XXXXXX (removed because I refuse to promote their hatred) ?
2. Call your local store manager. Let the manager know that you will not be shopping at The Home Depot until the company stops supporting the homosexual agenda. You can find the phone number here. (click "Store Finder").
3. Print the paper petition and distribute it at Sunday School and church
(Nothing quite like teaching hatred in Sunday School, huh)

*still alive. I think this means their god of hate does not exist.

In-vehicle navigation sales will quadruple by 2019

By Paul A. Eisenstein, The Detroit Bureau

The number of cars, trucks and crossovers sold with in-vehicles navigation systems will quadruple in North America by 2019, according to a new study, growing to nearly 13 million new systems annually.

But that may not be as good news as it might seem for traditional navi system suppliers, such as Denso, Harman or TomTom, cautions Boston-based Strategy Analytics, Inc. It warns that high-tech firms, such as Apple, Google and Microsoft, are ?beginning to battle for share? as they grow their own automotive business.

The good news is that future navigation systems, whoever supplies them, will likely be less expensive and offer significantly more features.? Price, even more than functionality, has been a barrier to entry for many consumers ? or led them to go with aftermarket devices that can be purchased at a Costco for $100.? And now, potential buyers have the opportunity to go with smartphone navigation apps.?

Progressive Expands Spy-as-You-Go Car Insurance?

??The recent Apple announcement regarding its automotive OEM partnerships and the expansion of Apple?s mapping efforts could significantly change the in-vehicle navigation market,? says Strategy Analytics Senior Analyst John Canali.

The penetration rate of in-car navigation technology varies widely by market.? Factory navi systems are near-ubiquitous in Japan, especially in labyrinthine cities like Tokyo.? In the U.S., however, the technology got off to a slow start, and while after-market units have become popular holiday gifts, factory-installed systems have gained ground much more slowly.

That?s beginning to change.? Some makers have recognized that price is a critical obstacle.? They had to switch from a low-volume, high profit margin strategy, said Canali, to one that recognizes they can sell far more navigation systems but at a lower profit per unit.

Ford, for example, now offers navi systems on some models for as little as $600.? In fact, the basic hardware is already in the car and the motorist pays the premium for software contained on a thumbnail-sized SD card.

Meanwhile, proposed legislation that would mandate the use of back-up cameras should also help lower prices and increase sales, suggested Canali, as most of the basic hardware, notably the in-dash video screen will already be installed in most vehicles once such legislation goes into effect.?

SideCar Introduces Ridesharing App?

But the analyst notes that ?The definition of navigation has really widened,? stressed Canali.? ?It?s not just the full-screen, harddrive or DVD-based system built into the dashboard anymore.?

Ford, for example, also offers a free service through its Sync infotainment system.? There?s no video display but a motorist can call in a destination and an operator will program it in.? Then, turn-by-turn instructions will be read out by voice.? General Motors offers a similar ?off-board navigation? feature through its OnStar subsidiary, as do a number of other makers.? GM has also introduced the new Chevrolet GogoLink, a new smartphone app-based nav system that GM says will provide full-featured navigation with traffic updates at less than the cost of traditional navigation.

Ford?s Sync system, as well as Kia?s new infotainment technology, were both developed by Microsoft.? The latest Audi models, such as the 2013 S5 sedan, feature displays using Google Earth and Google StreetView images.? Apple is now getting into the act and is even negotiating with a number of manufacturers to add a ?Siri? button on the steering wheel that would directly access the high-tech firm?s voice control software on an iPhone. Among other things, that would allow a driver to simply ask for a nearby coffee shop and have the address automatically entered into the navi system.?

Wild, Weird And Wacky Street Signs Contest?

?Competing against these new players will be difficult for incumbent suppliers of navigation systems because the new players are so well capitalized and can devote far more to research and development,? Richard Robinson, Director of Automotive and Multimedia Communications at Strategy Analytics.

The new study concludes that worldwide sales of in-car navigation systems will jump from 9.5 million in 2009 to 56 million by 2019. In North America volume will surge from 1.8 million in 2009 to an estimated 3 million this year and 12.9 million annually by 2019.? But, at least from a percentage basis, the biggest growth will be seen in China, Strategy Analytics forecasting navigation sales of just 355,000 in 2009 will reach 11.8 million by 2018.?

Nanodevice builds electricity from tiny pieces

ScienceDaily (July 11, 2012) ? A team of scientists at the National Physical Laboratory (NPL) and University of Cambridge has made a significant advance in using nano-devices to create accurate electrical currents. Electrical current is composed of billions and billions of tiny particles called electrons. They have developed an electron pump -- a nano-device -- which picks these electrons up one at a time and moves them across a barrier, creating a very well-defined electrical current.

The device drives electrical current by manipulating individual electrons, one-by-one at very high speed. This technique could replace the traditional definition of electrical current, the ampere, which relies on measurements of mechanical forces on current-carrying wires.

The key breakthrough came when scientists experimented with the exact shape of the voltage pulses that control the trapping and ejection of electrons. By changing the voltage slowly while trapping electrons, and then much more rapidly when ejecting them, it was possible to massively speed up the overall rate of pumping without compromising the accuracy.

By employing this technique, the team were able to pump almost a billion electrons per second, 300 times faster than the previous record for an accurate electron pump set at the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) in the USA in 1996.

Although the resulting current of 150 picoamperes is small (ten billion times smaller than the current used when boiling a kettle), the team were able to measure the current with an accuracy of one part-per-million, confirming that the electron pump was accurate at this level. This result is a milestone in the precise, fast, manipulation of single electrons and an important step towards a re-definition of the unit ampere.

As reported in Nature Communications, the team used a nano-scale semiconductor device called a 'quantum dot' to pump electrons through a circuit. The quantum dot is a tiny electrostatic trap less than 0.0001 mm wide. The shape of the quantum dot is controlled by voltages applied to nearby electrodes.

The dot can be filled with electrons and then raised in energy. By a process known as 'back-tunneling', all but one of the electrons fall out of the quantum dot back into the source lead. Ideally, just one electron remains trapped in the dot, which is ejected into the output lead by tilting the trap. When this is repeated rapidly this gives a current determined solely by the repetition rate and the charge on each electron -- a universal constant of nature and the same for all electrons.

The research makes significant steps towards redefining the ampere by developing the application of an electron pump which improves accuracy rates in primary electrical measurement.

Masaya Kataoka of the Quantum Detection Group at NPL explains: "Our device is like a water pump in that it produces a flow by a cyclical action. The tricky part is making sure that exactly the same number of electronic charge is transported in each cycle.

The way that the electrons in our device behave is quite similar to water; if you try and scoop up a fixed volume of water, say in a cup or spoon, you have to move slowly otherwise you'll spill some. This is exactly what used to happen to our electrons if we went too fast."

Stephen Giblin also part of the Quantum Detection Group, added: "For the last few years, we have worked on optimising the design of our device, but we made a huge leap forward when we fine-tuned the timing sequence. We've basically smashed the record for the largest accurate single-electron current by a factor of 300.

Although moving electrons one at a time is not new, we can do it much faster, and with very high reliability -- a billion electrons per second, with an accuracy of less than one error in a million operations.

Using mechanical forces to define the ampere has made a lot of sense for the last 60 or so years, but now that we have the nanotechnology to control single electrons we can move on.

The technology might seem more complicated, but actually a quantum system of measurement is more elegant, because you are basing your system on fundamental constants of nature, rather than things which we know aren't really constant, like the mass of the standard kilogram."
