Rolling Stones celebrate 50th, hint about tour

LONDON (Reuters) - Half a century after their first live gig on London's Oxford Street, Mick Jagger, Keith Richards and the rest of the Rolling Stones marked the band's 50th anniversary by launching a new book, a photographic exhibition and hinting about a tour.

As part of the festivities guitarist Ronnie Wood told Reuters in an exclusive interview that the Stones are set to reveal their plans for future live gigs this week.

"What we do is live in hope and hopefully this week we'll unfold some plans," Wood said, adding that the band had recently spent a number of days rehearsing in a studio in New York and that getting together was like "being back at school".

Richards said this week that the Stones have met up for "a couple of rehearsals", but would not go so far as to say when the quartet comprising himself, Jagger, Charlie Watts and Wood would be performing in public again.

"We're playing around with the idea and had a couple of rehearsals - we've got together and it feels so good," Richards told Britain's publicly funded broadcaster the BBC.

The 65-year-old Wood, who joined the Stones in 1975 to replace Mick Taylor, also refused to rule out the possibility of a return appearance by Bill Wyman -- bass guitarist for the band from 1962 until 1993.

"I saw him last week and he was in top form, rocking," Wood said. "We also did a rehearsal with him a few weeks ago. It's like he'd never been away."

The exhibition of photos at London's Somerset House and the accompanying book track the rise of a group of fresh-faced British boys who played their first gig at Oxford Street's Marquee Club in 1962, became the scourge of the establishment in the 1960s, the titans of 70s music and finally the elder statesmen of rock and roll in the 21st century.

"There was no sort of master plan," Richards says on the band's official website rollingstones.com. "We were flying by the seat of our pants. That is what amazes me, that the whole thing was improvised."

The relationship at the heart of the Stones' success remains the working friendship of singer Jagger and Richards, whose long musical partnership goes back to the days when they roomed with the late guitarist and former Stones founding member Brian Jones, hustling gigs wherever they could find them.

"You have to put yourself back into that time," Jagger says on rollingstones.com. "Popular music wasn't talked about on any kind of intellectual level. There was no such term as ?popular culture.' None of those things existed."

RIFT AND RECONCILIATION

But the Jagger/Richards partnership has also had its chillier moments.

Earlier this year, Richards apologized to Jagger for derogatory comments he made about the lead singer in his 2010 memoir "Life", which caused a rift within the band.

In comments reported by Rolling Stone magazine, the two agreed it was time to settle their differences, leaving fans keen for another world tour breathing a sigh of relief.

"I got very involved with the business side of the Stones, mainly because I felt no one else was interested, but it's plain now from the book that Keith felt excluded, which is a pity," Jagger was quoted as saying. "Time I reckon to move on."

Richards added: "Mick's right. He and I have had conversations over the last year of a kind we have not had for an extremely long time and that has been incredibly important to me."

Some industry sources had put a tour delay down to the argument, but Rolling Stone said it may be more closely linked to concerns over Richards' health.

"The quality of the guitarist's performances declined after he suffered a head injury on vacation in Fiji in April 2006, midway through the Bigger Bang tour," the magazine said.

A Bigger Bang, the Stones' last tour, played to 4.5 million people in 32 countries over two years before it finished in London in 2007.

"The Rolling Stones: 50" picture book also hit the shelves on Thursday to correspond with the golden anniversary and were showcased at a Champagne-fuelled London party on Thursday attended by the Stones and other celebrities.

The new book features 700 illustrations, 300 of them in color and many taken from the archive of the Daily Mirror tabloid, which contains the largest newspaper collection of Rolling Stones photography.

"This is our story of 50 fantastic years," Jagger, Richards, guitarist/bass player Wood and drummer Watts said in a joint statement.

"We started out as a blues band playing the clubs and more recently we've filled the largest stadiums in the world with the kind of show that none of us could have imagined all those years ago."

The photographic autobiography, which also features words from the band, includes images taken by Philip Townsend, the photographer for the band's first ever shoot.

The 352-page hardback edition published by Thames & Hudson in Britain, will retail at 29.95 pounds ($48).

The Stones have said they also plan to release a documentary film in November chronicling their history.

The last studio album by the group was in 2005. They have released two live albums, 'Hampton Coliseum (Live 1981)' and 'L.A. Friday (Live 1975),' so far this year.

Richards said on rollingstones.com that he is grateful for the hallowed place that he and the band have carved into the hearts of their fans and in rock history, but was still striving to improve, half a century into his career.

"If you say I'm great, thank you very much, but I know what I am. I could be better, man, you know?"

House may prosecute journalists for reporting leaked information

After recent New York Times stories containing information that some considered a threat to national security the House is considering revising the Espionage Act, and?allowing journalists to be prosecuted for disclosing sensitive information.

In response to New York Times stories that relied on leaks of sensitive national-security information, a House of Representatives panel on Wednesday discussed legislation that could allow journalists to be prosecuted for disclosing such information.

Army Col. Ken Allard testified to a House Judiciary subcommittee that the extent of national security leaks is ?unprecedented? in American history. Recent examples include the Times? investigations of President Barack?Obama?s?terrorist ?kill list? and American cyberattacks on Iran.

According to Allard, such investigations threaten national security and serve only to promote the news media?s self-interest. He charged that such investigations were carefully planned to help?Obama?s?re-election chances and to advance the media?s own agenda. An example, he said, was New York Times reporter David Sanger?s new book, ?Confront and Conceal,? which details American cyberattacks on Iranian nuclear facilities.

Allard testified that Sanger was ?systematically penetrating the?Obama?White House as effectively as any foreign agent,? which he said exposed vital secrets to Iran and put the U.S. in danger of retaliation.

?Far from advancing our rights as citizens ? as a free press should ? Mr. Sanger deliberately placed his country at significant risk for his own profit,? Allard charged.

Leaks of this nature expose details of crucial security operations, including the people involved in them, lawyer Kenneth L. Wainstein testified. He said they also informed the nation?s adversaries of U.S. methods, compromised the well-being of government personnel and U.S. alliances, and undermined the integrity of government services.

Nathan Sales, a law assistant professor at George Mason University, also stressed the importance of protecting national-security information.

?If it leaks, we can?t wiretap Osama bin Laden,? he said. ?If it leaks, sources get caught, incriminated and killed.?

As the committee considers revising legislation that would prosecute leakers, Rep. Trey Gowdy, R-S.C., also urged criminal prosecutions of reporters.

WSJ chimes in on Amazon smartphone rumors, says 4- to 5-inch device is in testing

Whether the possibility of an Amazon smartphone is growing any stronger or the Wall Street Journal just wants to prove it has sources too, the paper is saying parts suppliers are gearing up to build just such a device. According to the always informative unnamed sources, testing of a phone is underway, and mass production could start late this year or early next year. There's still no revelations on what the software might be like or how the device could be sold, but the report does expand on Bloomberg's initial revelations from last week by narrowing the possible size down to between 4- and 5-inches. Of course, if the rumors are correct then we'll probably see a new Kindle Fire hit the streets first anyway, if it has any updated software to bring along then maybe we'll have a better idea of what an Amazon phone could look like.

Westminster College Bolsters Recruitment with 2-way SMS Tool

Westminster College has introduced a new two-way SMS tool into its recruitment process. The Salt Lake City, Utah private liberal arts college is now using Blackboard ConnectTxt to connect with prospective students. The two-way mass notification platform was recently introduced into the US.

Westminster tested ConnectTxt in a pilot program aimed at its outreach and recruitment process. Administrators from the school's admissions office used the system to send messages to prospective students that had not completed their applications and who were unresponsive to phone calls and e-mails, according to a statement released this week by Blackboard. The school heard back from more than 50 percent of the mass text message recipients.

Dana Simmons, director of e-marketing and outreach at Westminster College, was unsurprised by the response rate. "Communications have changed; while email, phone calls and direct mail are still viable tools, effectively connecting with students today means having a mobile conversation," said Simmons. "Incorporating Blackboard ConnectTxt into our recruitment strategy has proven that students are willing to respond if you connect with them in the right way."

ConnectTxt enables Westminster's administrators to personalize, schedule, and track outbound messages. The system's messaging engine uses keywords, shortcodes and standard codes, QR codes, and inbox filters and workflow rules to route inbound messages and replies.

Seventy-three percent of cell phone users are "active SMS users, and young adults between the ages of 18 and 24 send and receive an average of 3,200 text messages every month," according to a 2011 report from Pew Internet and American Life Project. These findings suggest that text messaging is the preferred communications channel for mobile phone users, particularly college-age adults.

Blackboard ConnectTxt is available immediately for US clients. More information is available by texting MOREINFO to 97178 or by visiting Blackboard's Web site.

New technique identifies cellular 'Needle in a haystack'

ScienceDaily (July 11, 2012) ? Rare cells can be identified within mixed cell populations with near perfect accuracy using a detection technique devised by research teams led by Robert Wieder, MD, PhD, at the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey-New Jersey Medical School and Rajan Kumar, MD, PhD, at Genome Data Systems in Hamilton, N.J. This technique may facilitate cancer diagnosis, which often relies on the detection of rare cancerous cells in tiny amounts of biopsy tissue or fluid.

Wieder's group previously described this approach, which employs microfluidics, in which cells expressing a specific surface protein are identified as they are pumped through a narrow fluid channel. The channel is coated with a binding partner for the protein of interest, slowing the progress of the cells of interest while allowing non-specific cells to pass through unhindered.

In the new study, published in the Royal Society of Chemistry journal Lab on a Chip, the group optimized the assay to allow the detection of rare breast cancer cells in a mixed population with 100% sensitivity and specificity and without prior manipulation. The process left the cells undamaged, making them available for additional microfluidic, cellular or molecular testing, including analysis of surface proteins known to affect prognosis or response to treatment in patients with cancer, infectious or inflammatory diseases or exposure to toxins.
