NBA Education is Andre Drummond?s Main Priority

After being selected with the ninth overall pick in the 2012 NBA draft, Detroit Pistons center Andre Drummond is getting a crash course in NBA basketball this summer. At just 18 years old, Drummond is viewed as an athletic but raw center that will need some seasoning before being able to produce at the NBA level.

Less than a week into Summer League play, Drummond has proven to be a project, but has also displayed the size and athletic ability that made him a top-10 pick. At nearly 7-feet tall, Drummond?s combo of height and skill makes him one of the most highly anticipated players of the 2012 draft. Even though Pistons? coaches have been busy focusing on the fundamentals with Drummond, the former Connecticut Huskies? big man believes he?s on the right track with his ?new family? with Detroit.

?This has been great,? Drummond told HOOPSWORLD. ?Just being out here with Detroit and being out here with my new family, my new brothers and my new home. I?m just learning a whole lot every single day. I?ve learned things I?ve never heard of my entire life within three days of being with Detroit. It?s just been a great learning process for me. Just being on the floor with the guys and soaking up everything that?s been told to me ? it?s just been great.?

Being coachable early on his career could be one of Drummond?s greatest strengths. The new terminology at the NBA hasn?t been lost on Drummond and that could pay dividends early on in his career.

Early on this summer, some veterans on the Pistons came out and practiced with the team?s new additions. Drummond feels this extra practice time and one-on-one tutelage has been pivotal in incorporating him into this Pistons? team.

?It was fun seeing Charlie Villanueva there,? Drummond said. ?Greg Monroe? [Jason] Maxiell came; Chris Douglas-Roberts came so it?s just been great. They kind of showed us that it?s not easy. What we?re walking into is a whole different ballgame than what we do in college.

?That kind of gave me a rude awakening, now knowing what I?m about to get into over the next few weeks.?

That ?rude awakening? is to be expected for a teenager embarking on his first voyage with an NBA squad. Coaches for the Pistons have stressed to Drummond that this summer is a learning opportunity for the young center and have told him not to get too down on himself for mistakes along the way.

?Just keep running the floor well, play hard,? Drummond told HOOPSWORLD of his coaches? expectations. ?Rebound the ball, block shots. Scoring will come to me so [coaches just preach] not to get down on myself if I miss shots or whatever because it will come to me.?

?

While both Villanueva and Monroe are already in the frontcourt rotation for Detroit, Drummond believes his skill set translates with either of the two players on the floor.

?We complement each other pretty well,? Drummond said of his low post teammates. ?We all do similar things on the floor. We all can [play] interchangeable positions so I think this will be a great learning experience for me just trying to feed off what Charlie does and what Greg does because they both do similar things. I just think it?s going to be great to be able to learn from those two guys.?

Overall, Drummond believes the young, pedigreed competition he will be facing this summer is going to help to mold him into a better NBA player.

?It?s fun for me,? Drummond said. ?Playing against some of the top guys that have been in the draft already? Just going against some of these guys has been a great experience for me to try to get myself better as a player.

?I?m only 18 and some of them are in their mid-20?s, so going up against those guys is a great learning experience and great experience for me altogether.?

For a player with the youth, explosiveness and potential Drummond possesses, the Summer League should only assist in the young center?s development. Drummond continues to say all the right things and that positive attitude and willingness to learn from the professionals will pay dividends.

Although still learning the game of basketball at the NBA level, Drummond?s inherent willingness to learn combined with his innate size, athletic ability and speed is exceptional. This combination has the possibility of culminating in an outstanding player on the NBA stage.

Experience is the key here for Drummond, as only extensive playing time against NBA-level competition will prepare the young center for life against the best basketball players in the world.

At 18 years old, time is clearly on Drummond?s side.

To clean up the mine, let fungus reproduce

ScienceDaily (July 16, 2012) ? The fungus S. aciculosa produces spores (called conidia) on stalks during asexual reproduction. The brown color at the base of these structures is the natural color of the manganese oxides that precipitate there following oxidation of reduced manganese by superoxide. The hyphae [each of the branching filaments that make up the mycelium of a fungus] are not involved in oxidation.

Harvard-led researchers have discovered that an Ascomycete fungus that is common in polluted water produces environmentally important minerals during asexual reproduction.

The key chemical in the process, superoxide, is a byproduct of fungal growth when the organism produces spores. Once released into the environment, superoxide reacts with the element manganese (Mn), producing a highly reactive mineral that aids in the cleanup of toxic metals, degrades carbon substrates, and controls the bioavailability of nutrients.

The results, which will inform a wide range of future studies in microbiology, environmental chemistry, developmental biology, and geobiology, were published online this week in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences (PNAS).

Manganese is a versatile element, existing in multiple oxidation states and phases. Naturally occurring in Earth's crust, it plays essential roles in carbon sequestration, photosynthesis, and the transport and fate of nutrients and contaminants.

It can be an especially important reactant in polluted water, such as the runoff from coal mines. When the ion Mn(II) is converted to higher oxidized states,it forms a reactive mineral that is extremely useful in getting other pollutants -- such as arsenic, cadmium, and cobalt -- under control and out of the water.

"If you can get manganese to oxidize, then it forms these really active minerals, manganese oxides, which are environmental sponges that will clean up the water," explains principal investigator Colleen Hansel, a faculty associate and former associate professor of environmental microbiology at the Harvard School of Engineering and Applied Sciences (SEAS). She is currently an associate scientist at Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution. "A lot of coal mine drainage remediation relies on getting bacteria and fungi to oxidize manganese to make these minerals."

"One problem with in situ remediation is that if you don't know how and why processes are occurring, you can't stimulate the organisms to do it. That's been a big problem with the remediation of coal mine drainage sites. To stimulate microbial activity, the approach has been to provide complex carbon sources like corn cobs and straw and let the 'bugs' go to town, but it frequently doesn't work."

It turns out that the common fungus Stilbella aciculosa only produces the necessary ingredient, superoxide, during cell differentiation (an aspect of growth and development) -- specifically, during the formation of asexual reproductive structures. The finding implies that adding excessive nutrients to polluted water may not necessarily contribute to remediation, unless it is designed to induce fungal reproduction.

For the fungus, superoxide appears to serve as a cellular signal that moderates cell differentiation. The chemical's subsequent role in oxidizing environmental manganese so rapidly and efficiently may just be a useful coincidence, beneficial to humans but of little consequence to the fungus.

All of the manganese-oxidizing bacteria and Ascomycete fungi known to date are heterotrophs; like humans, they eat carbon and breathe oxygen.

"They're not eating manganese the way some organisms eat other metals like iron," says Hansel. "This has been an enigma, in the field of metal biogeochemistry. According to evolutionary theory, organisms usually perform a process for a reason. But for decades no one has understood why or how bacteria and some groups of fungi [the Ascomycota] were oxidizing manganese, because they weren't doing it to gain energy."

Still, Hansel suggests that there may be more to the process than meets the eye.

"It looks like an accidental side reaction, but we don't really know, because manganese oxides are very reactive and could therefore provide some indirect benefits to the organism," she says. "The manganese oxides could, for instance, degrade recalcitrant carbon and thus feed the fungi new carbon sources that they can metabolize better. Maybe they are 'purposely' doing it. We want to address these biochemical questions and the evolutionary implications, as well as determine the larger relevance of superoxide-based metal cycling. How important is this process in terms of the biogeochemistry of other metals like iron and mercury? How significant is its impact on the ecology of microbial ecosystems?"

With co-authors Carolyn A. Zeiner (a graduate student at SEAS), Cara M. Santelli (a former postdoc, now at the Smithsonian National Museum of Natural History), and Samuel M. Webb (at the Stanford Synchrotron Radiation Lightsource), Hansel identified the biochemical mechanism that leads to the oxidation of manganese, including the class of enzymes (NADPH oxidases) that spur the process.

The team's discovery that superoxide is the key player in fungal oxidation of manganese is especially exciting because some bacteria actually do it the same way, even using the same enzymes. The idea that prokaryotes and eukaryotes developed this homology raises intriguing questions in the history of evolution.

"We're traveling down a whole new avenue in biogeochemistry," says Hansel. "It's exciting right now to be one of the people sitting in the front seat."

This project received funding from the National Science Foundation.

Google CEO Page 'Recovering,' Back in the Office

Google CEO Larry Page

Google CEO Larry Page was back at the office last week after a mystery ailment causing the loss of his speaking voice forced him to miss last month's Google I/O developer conference, according to the company's chairman Eric Schmidt.

Schmidt updated reporters with the news about Page's condition at a fireside chat with media in Sun Valley, Idaho last Thursday, The Wall Street Journal reported.

It's not clear if Page has completely regained his voice, but Schmidt said, ""Larry is doing much better ... he seems fine," according to the Journal. The specific nature of Page's ailment has not been revealed.

Schmidt told shareholders in June that Page would be missing upcoming Google events, including Google I/O and the company's upcoming second-quarter earnings call on July 19. Schmidt didn't say if Page's plans regarding next Thursday's conference call with investors and analysts had changed given his apparent return to health.

Page continued to run Google the past few weeks despite his illness, Schmidt said. The 39-year-old CEO has been communicated via email and other forms of written messaging during his recovery.

Meanwhile, at the same fireside chat in Sun Valley, Schmidt talked up Google's self-driving car initiative, opining that "self-driving cars should become the predominant mode of transportation in our lifetime," according to Tech Crunch.

Distracted by research ? Terri Patrick's Blog

This research excuse for ?not writing? is usually heard from historical and paranormal writers as they delve into their world building. I always felt there was enough in the here and now to fulfill my stories and all I needed to worry about was plot and character.

I?ve been absent from blogging here because of beautiful weather, places to go, things to do, stories to read, wood to stack in preparation of the winter months, and new adjustments to my writing schedule. My routine is being challenged by constantly shifting to new locations and grabbing a few hours of computer time because I?m totally not plugged in to all the wi-fi apps and such. ?But the primary research distracting me from posting to this blog is ? I?ve been exploring new homes of our friends and family.

Our youngest daughter got the keys for her new-first-home yesterday. It needs some work as it was vacant for almost a year, but they are young and have all types of resources to get it awesome in the next few weeks before they move in. ? The bonus is the location and that a sister and a friend are within walking distance. Barely an hour after she pulled the for sale sign from the front yard this friend, and new puppy who are also new to the neighborhood, stopped in for the dogs to have their first meet and greet, which was a success.

Only two weeks earlier, I walked through one of my friends new home. She?s at the other end of the age spectrum and has designed her new home?specifically?for her retirement lifestyle and passion for quilting.

Since my primary writing is contemporary romance novels, and memoir, anything regarding home and relationships is research. I have become fascinated by all the variations of what ?Home is Where the Heart Is? means to others, as well as myself. Young families are moving into urban settings so they don?t have the weekend yard work routine, others totally want that suburban setting of sidewalks and street parties.

Ed and I, at the youngest edge of the Baby Boomer generation, are watching friends building new homes and lifestyles in their sixties while anticipating decades of activities and no stairs in their homes. Ed and I are also exploring how we are able to work at our daughter?s home while watching our grandsons, or at my sister?s downtown condo, with a better internet connection and cell coverage than we have at our current home.

For decades I have designed my life around promoting the well being of my family. For me this has meant creating a home that was safe and nurturing for everyone in the family to become who they aspire to be. I?m aware that this is not how others see their homes. This has created a problem for me recently because our girls are settled in their own aspirations of being who they are. I, on the other hand, am suddenly only focused on aspiring to be me.

There are all kinds of life activities in my daughters lives that could claim my attention and be wonderful ways to fulfill my time and energy for the rest of my life. It?s strange to realize I don?t have to aspire to be ? anything. I could just ?BE? and that would totally awesome and more than many on this planet will ever achieve.?But even writing that?sentence made me laugh.

There have been many occasions for me to pause and?reassess who the hell ? I AM. These life/lifestyle opportunities were usually at the point of a big transition, and there have been many. A few months of turbulence included wallowing in memories prior to accepting the choices I made that have brought me to today.

The ?What If?? and ?If only?? are questions I reserve for my fiction.

The only thing I can change about the experiences of my life is my point of view. And now I know that can change depending on my age. My point of view on who I aspire to be today is different now than it was a decade ago. I will have a different point of view about who I am, and who I aspire to be, a decade from now.

Today is what matters. For now, I aspire to be a gypsy who wakes up each day with a sense of wonder for the adventure of the day.

My business is helping authors understand the basics of how to market themselves. My goals are to live each day in a happy place. My dreams are to write stories that enhance readers lives. I?ve already achieved more than many aspire to BE.

And my research has revealed that it is even more important for me to aspire to be more than I AM ? while being totally content and fulfilled with Who I Am. Yep, that?s the ticket. Have fun with that, I?m still trying to figure it out. Please post your answers, I can use all the help I can get?

I was wondering if I want to try and sell my ipad 3rd generation on craigslist if I can lump it for an iphone 4s and cash, I currently have the iphone 4 but am not eligble for an upgrade anytime soon. I know iphone 5 is coming out soon as well but I'm not sure i'd get the same cash value. If I do the iphone and cash how much cash should I make them throw in? The ipad is the 64 gb wifi only with a folio case.
