Dr. Wartman and FLT3 mutation, On Charlie... | The Leukemia ...

On Charlie Rose Tuesday night was a segment on the New York Times Story by Gina Kolata about Leukemia gene research with Dr. Wartman and Dr DiPersio. The TV segment was basically a follow up to her story recently in the Times.

Dr Wartman is a research scientist/doctor who happened to come down with A.L.L. while he was doing gene research on Leukemia.? On his 3rd relapse they ran out of options so his research team devoted all their time to sequencing his DNA & RNA.? They found the flt3 gene was mutated and over active. I got the impression that this mutant gene is not known to be associated with A.L.L, but is in AML and other cancers.? Long story short, if they had not done the DNA/RNA sequencing they would have never suspected the flt3 gene and he would have probably died.? Fortunately, they found the drug "Sunitinib" which is effective on kidney cancer, was effective on this flt3 gene.? He's been in Remission since last fall.? One of the points the research made was that the driver for his cancer is a gene which could be the same driver for another unrelated cancer,? and without genome research this association may not have been found.

?

I find this type of research very fascinating and I just hope more discoveries will come.

Attack on Israeli tourist bus in Bulgaria kills 7

SOFIA, Bulgaria (AP) ? Israel vowed to strike back at Iran for a brazen daylight bombing Wednesday that killed at least seven people on a bus full of Israeli tourists in Bulgaria.

The bombing was the latest in a series of attacks attributed to Iran that have targeted Israelis and Jews overseas and threatened to escalate a shadow war between the two arch-enemies. Iran has denied involvement in the past but did not comment on Wednesday's attack.

President Barack Obama termed it a "barbaric terrorist attack" and called Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to pledge U.S. help in finding the perpetrators.

The blast gutted the bus at the airport in the quiet Black Sea resort city of Burgas, some 400 kilometers (250 miles) east of the capital, Sofia, where the Israelis had just arrived on a charter flight from Tel Aviv carrying 154 people, including eight children.

Black smoke billowed into the sky from the stricken bus after the bomb exploded. Young Israelis said they were just boarding when the blast ripped through the white vehicle in the airport parking lot. Israeli Foreign Minister Avigdor Lieberman said at least seven people were killed.

"We were at the entrance of the bus and in a few seconds we heard a huge boom," said Gal Malka, an Israeli teenager who was slightly wounded.

The resort town has become a popular travel destination in recent years for Israelis, particularly for recent high school graduates before they are drafted for mandatory military service.

No group immediately claimed responsibility for the attack, which wounded 30 others. But suspicion immediately fell upon Iran and its Lebanese proxy, the Hezbollah guerrilla group.

"All signs point to Iran," Netanyahu said. "Just in the past few months, we have seen attempts by Iran to harm Israelis in Thailand, India, Georgia, Kenya, Cyprus and more. This is an Iranian terror attack that is spreading across the world. Israel will react forcefully to Iran's terror."

The Israeli leader gave no evidence to back his charges.

Top Israeli security officials were holding consultations late Wednesday. The Israelis said they were still weighing their options on how to respond, and there were no preparations under way for an immediate reaction.

The officials, speaking on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to discuss a sensitive security matter, said any reaction would probably be a pinpoint operation limited in scope, most likely under the auspices of the Mossad spy agency.

The officials said security officials also were concerned about further attacks, similar to a string of incidents in India, Georgia and Thailand earlier this year, and were reviewing security at potential Israeli targets, such as airline terminals and diplomatic installations.

The Bulgaria attack came exactly 18 years after the bombing of a Jewish community center in Argentina that killed 85 people. An Argentine investigation concluded Iran was behind that attack. In addition, Israel has accused Iran of being behind a string of attacks in Europe, Asia and Africa in recent months.

The violence also came against the broader backdrop of the international standoff with Iran over its nuclear program. Israel, accusing Iran of developing nuclear weapons, has repeatedly hinted it is prepared to strike Iranian nuclear targets if Tehran does not curb its suspect program.

In the past, Iran has accused Israel of being behind a series of covert attacks on Iranian nuclear targets, ranging from the assassinations of Iranian nuclear scientists to mysterious computer viruses that have damaged Iranian centrifuges.

Israel has never admitted to involvement, but it and others have accused Iran of reprisal missions, including a February bombing in New Delhi that wounded an Israeli diplomat's wife and the discovery of a cache of explosives in Bangkok that Thai officials claim was linked to a plot against Israeli diplomats.

Israeli officials also have long warned that the Iranian-backed Hezbollah would try to attack Israelis abroad. Hezbollah has accused Israel of assassinating a top leader in Damascus in 2008 and vowed to avenge the killing. Israel has never admitted involvement in the mysterious explosion.

In statement, Israeli Defense Minister Ehud Barak cited Iranian-backed militants and other radical Islamic groups as the likely perpetrators of the Bulgaria bombing.

"We are in a continual fight against them. We are determined to identify who sent them, who perpetrated (the attack), and to settle the account," he said.

Israeli counterterrorism expert Boaz Ganor said Wednesday's attack was "likely not the last in a series," adding, "All this looks like Hezbollah, Iran or a combination of the two."

Despite repeated alerts and concerns of an Iranian-backed attack in recent months, Israel said it had no advance intelligence on a pending attack in Bulgaria.

The attack took place near the airport, shortly after a charter flight filled with Israeli youth landed at 4:45 p.m. local time.

Lieberman, the Israeli foreign minister, said he was briefed by his Bulgarian counterpart and informed that a bomb was planted in the bus as it was transferring tourists from the airport.

He said six people died at the scene and another at the hospital. Two others were in critical condition.

Britain also condemned the attack, with British Foreign Secretary William Hague offering condolences to the victims' families.

Late Wednesday, Israel announced it was dispatching a military medical and relief team to Bulgaria, a country of 7.3 million bordering Greece and Turkey.

The Burgas airport was closed and traffic redirected. In Sofia, meanwhile, Mayor Yordanka Fandakova ordered a stronger police presence at all public places linked to the Jewish community. There are some 5,000 Jews in Bulgaria and most live in the capital.

German lawmakers demand certainty on circumcision

(AP) ? German lawmakers are demanding that the government end the uncertainty over the legality of circumcising young boys.

A Cologne court's ruling in June that concluded circumcision amounts to bodily harm has sparked public debate on the issue.

The verdict doesn't amount to a ban, but the head of the German Medical Association recommended doctors cease performing circumcisions for religious reasons until the law is clarified.

Jewish and Muslim groups have complained that the ruling could criminalize their centuries-old religious tradition of circumcising young boys.

A broad majority in Parliament voted in favor of a resolution Thursday calling for the government to draft a law this fall permitting "medically correct circumcision."

Lawmakers say the law would safeguard religious freedom and the right of parents to determine how to raise their children.

Top Pick As Favorite July Weekend Destination: Ohkay Owingeh ...

OHKAY OWINGEH, N.M., July 17, 2012 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- New Mexico's natural beauty and colorful landscape are the backdrop to one of the most celebrated Native American events of the region, bringing music, dance, food, crafts and culture to thousands of visitors. Now in its 40th year, the historic Ohkay Owingeh Arts & Crafts Show and Market (formerly the Eight Northern Pueblo Arts & Crafts Show), will take center stage this coming weekend at the Ohkay Conference Center and Hotel Casino in Ohkay Owingeh, New Mexico, July 21-22.

Considered the largest Native American-owned and operated outdoor arts exhibition and market in the western United States, the show is an important tribal tradition. Ohkay Casino Native American Artist Advocate and Ohkay Owingeh Council Member Peter Garcia, Jr. says show organizers are seeing a welcomed resurgence in attendance inquiries this year and anticipate a large crowd for the two-day event.

"We are thrilled about the pre-event excitement that is building," Garcia says. "It has been such a tradition for attendees, and while we recognize that families are still struggling with the economy, many have made this a summer weekend priority."

Garcia says the July weather will have little impact on the festivities, given that the event takes place inside the casino's conference center. An added plus is free parking. This is the second year the Ohkay Casino has served as the event venue, and visitors won't be disappointed. They'll be treated to an array of entertainment by traditional Pueblo dancers, as well as the Native American beat of drums, flutes and singers. Pueblo-inspired cuisine will likely draw families to the event, including such favorites as bowls of red or green chile, posole, Indian tacos, oven bread, fry bread, Indian cookies and pies and other traditional treats.

The Ohkay Conference Center and Hotel Casino is half-way between Santa Fe and Taos on State Road 68 (the road to Taos). Show hours are 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. both days. For more information, www.Ohkay.com.

Samsung swallows up CSR mobile and location patents for $310 million

Samsung swallows up CSR mobile and location patents for $310 millionThe S-Wallet has opened and absorbed $310 million-worth of connectivity and location patents from British chip company CSR, which already supplies SiRF GPS chips to Galaxy devices. In addition to boosting its patent portfolio, Samsung also invested $34 million to buy a five percent stake in the firm itself, giving it access to a large development team working on audio, automotive, indoor location and other functions. The deal won't let Samsung use CSR's camera technology, but it will -- the Korean manufacturer says -- "solidify its position as a leading semiconductor solutions provider." Given how Sammy is already intent going it alone with its Exynos processors, we have no reason to doubt it.

George Zimmerman's cousin accuses him of sexual molestation ( video)

George Zimmerman, the man charged with the murder of a black teenager in Florida, has now also been accused of sexually molesting his cousin. In other developments relating to the case, supporters of Zimmerman aim to postpone plans for a memorial for the slain teenager.?

George Zimmerman, who is charged in the shooting of unarmed black teenager Trayvon Martin, was accused by his female cousin of sexually molesting her for a decade beginning when she was 6 years old, according to new documents made public on Monday by prosecutors.

The name of the relative was deleted from an audio tape version of her witness statement that was released to the media. Identified only as Witness No. 9, she would be about age 27 now.

Zimmerman's lawyer, Mark O'Mara, confirmed the woman was the former neighborhood watch volunteer's cousin.

It is not immediately clear why prosecutors released the molestation allegation or whether they plan to use it in court if Zimmerman goes on trial.

"Now that this statement is part of the public record, the defense will vigorously defend Mr. Zimmerman against the allegations," O'Mara said in a statement.

In a motion filed in June to keep the accusation under wraps, O'Mara argued the statement by Witness 9 was uncorroborated and irrelevant to the murder case.

He wrote at the time that its disclosure would lead to "widespread hostile publicity which would substantially impair (Zimmerman's) fair trial rights."

Seminole County Circuit Judge Kenneth R. Lester , who is presiding over the case, ordered the document released under Florida's public records law.O'Mara made an unsuccessful 11th hour attempt on Monday to stop the public release of the statement, filing a motion barely four minutes before prosecutors' scheduled release of the audio recording. He also filed a motion on Friday requesting the judge recuse himself, arguing that Lester has displayed b ias a nd Zimmerman be lieves he will not be given a fair trial.

O'Mara also sought to seal about 145 of Zimmerman's jailhouse phone calls which were also released on Monday. The calls included conversations Zimmerman had with his wife and other family members an d friends about his jail conditions, media handling and his finances.

Part of the woman's statement was released last week in which she told investigators in a separate recorded statement that Zimmerman's family was known to be racist, but she did not recall any specific statement or act by Zimmerman to illustrate the point.

Zimmerman is accused of second-degree murder in the Feb. 26 shooting death of Martin. He claims he shot the 17-year-old in self-defense.

The woman told investigators during a taped interview that the last time Zimmerman molested her she was 16 and Zimmerman, a new high school graduate at the time, was temporarily living alone in a house his parents had just purchased in Lake Mary, Florida.

'Not Afraid of Him' Now?

Asked why she waited until March 20 of this year to tell her story to law enforcement, the woman said, "This is the first time in my life that I'm not afraid of him ... he can't get to me."

The woman described Zimmerman molesting her during annual family get-togethers and trips.

The woman said she finally told her parents in 2005 when she was 20. She said her parents called Zimmerman to a meeting at a pizza restaurant in Lake Mary."

Instead of talking about it, all he did was come in the room, come in the restaurant, he sat down on the end of the booth and he said 'I'm sorry' and just got up and walked out ... my parents, their jaws dropped," the woman said.

She said her mother discouraged her from taking further action at the time, saying it would be his word against hers, and she would wind up in jail.

In a separate development, a Zimmerman supporter and former neighbor, Frank Taaffe, told Reuters he planned to go door-to-door on Monday in the Retreat at Twin Lakes, the subdivision where Martin was gunned down, to collect signatures to protest any permanent memorial for Martin in the neighborhood.

Taaffe, echoing Zimmerman's claim that he merely defended himself against Martin's alleged aggression, said any memorial should await the conclusion of the trial.

"Why are we memorializing a potential - potential - aggressor?" Taaffe said.

A makeshift memorial set up at a neighborhood entrance after Martin's death was removed last week by the city of Sanford after some residents complained they did not want the killing to define their neighborhood.

They also said the highly publicized case was bringing down property values, according to city manager Norton Bonaparte.

Bonaparte said the city packed up items left at the memorial and stored them in a local museum. He said he agreed to meet on Tuesday with a local group that wants a permanent memorial to Martin.
