1962 Ferrari 250 GT SWB California Spyder added to RM's Monterey auction

1962 Ferrari 250 GT SWB California Spyder

The Ferrari 250 GT California Spyder may have been introduced to the mainstream by the 1986 movie Ferris Bueller's Day Off (of course, that car was a replica), but the iconic convertible has long been one of the most desirable collector cars for those in the know. With a little over 100 built, California Spyders rarely come up for sale, and when they do they bring big money. Back in 2008 a 1961 model set a record for a car sold at auction with a US$10.9 million price tag.

Those wanting to add a 250 GT California Spyder to their collection (and have the means) will have a chance later this month in Monterey, with a 1962 SWB (short wheel base) model crossing the block at Canadian auction powerhouse, RM Auctions. One of just 37 SWB cars with the more desirable enclosed headlight design, the car is finished in Rosso Corsa paint and has a tan leather interior. Under the hood is Ferrari's legendary 3.0-litre V12, the same powerplant in the 250 GTO. RM estimates the value of the car to be in the US$7.5-9 million range.

Scroll down to read the official announcement from RM, and check back in a few weeks for our complete Monterey coverage including results from the auction.

BLENHEIM, Ontario (August 2, 2012) ? RM Auctions, the world's largest collector car auction house for investment-quality automobiles, is honored to announce the addition of a stunning 1962 Ferrari 250 GT SWB California Spyder, chassis 3119 GT, to its Monterey sale, August 17?18 in California.

Considered one of the most beautiful and desirable Ferraris in existence, the California Spyder is the epitome of prestige and magnificent styling, featuring stunning bodywork designed by Pininfarina and masterfully executed by Scaglietti, all married to Ferrari's iconic 3-liter Colombo V-12. In total, just over 100 California Spyders were produced between 1958 and 1963. The example on offer is one of only 37 short wheelbase variants completed in the highly desirable covered headlight configuration, ranking it among the most attractive and desirable of all.

"A true dual-purpose automobile, the 250 GT SWB California Spyder remains one of the world's most coveted automobiles," says Rob Myers, Chairman and Founder, RM Auctions. "As one of only a very small group of covered headlamp versions produced, the example on offer is emphatically one of the most desirable open GT cars ever made, combining all of Ferrari's finest work: perfect design with tremendous performance."

Ferrari Classiche certified and finished in the attractive color combination of Rosso Corsa over a tan leather interior, chassis 3119 GT was sold new in March 1962 through Jacques Swaters' Garage Francorchamps SA in Belgium, before being imported into the United States in 1970. The recipient of an award-winning restoration, it enjoyed a successful showing at the 40th annual Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance in 1990, where a class award confirmed its authenticity, extraordinary desirability, and the high quality of its restoration. A matching-numbers example and professionally maintained over its known ownership, it is offered for auction ready to be toured or shown at the most exclusive venues around the world (Estimate: $7,500,000?$9,000,000).

Myers adds, "The opportunity to acquire a short wheelbase California Spyder rarely comes along, particularly one of this pedigree and exceptional rarity. We are truly delighted to present this stunning automobile on behalf of its owner at our upcoming Monterey sale. A magnificent example of one of the world's most revered Ferraris, we expect it to garner strong interest when it crosses the podium on August 18th."

Continuing RM's global leadership in the presentation of important and historic Ferraris at auction, chassis 3119 GT is joined by no less than 13 other investment-quality Ferraris in Monterey, including the extraordinarily rare 1956 Ferrari 250 GT LWB Berlinetta 'Tour de France,' chassis 0585 GT, the very first 14-louver Tour de France built of a total of nine units and featured in the Hollywood classic The Love Bug, and the hugely valuable 1955 Ferrari 410 S Berlinetta, chassis 0594 CM, featuring striking, one-off Scaglietti Berlinetta coachwork. A full list of Ferraris on offer is available online at www.rmauctions.com/monterey/ferrari.

A tradition spanning over 25 years, RM's highly anticipated Monterey, California sale, held during the same weekend as the prestigious Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance, returns to the Portola Hotel & Spa and Monterey Conference Center, August 17?18. In 2011, RM once again achieved the highest results of the Monterey week, generating more than $80 million in sales, the highest auction tally ever achieved on the Monterey Peninsula. For further information on the 2012 sale, including a full list of entries and RM's digital Monterey catalogue, please visit www.rmauctions.com or contact RM Auctions at +1 519 352 4575.

Asana

For me, the worst part of testing task-management apps is going too far down the rabbit hole. An endless?list maker, I can get sucked into a great to-do list app and forget that I'm only testing it, that I probably shouldn't try to meet too many real-life organizational needs in an app I'm only supposed to use for a few days. When I started playing with Web-based Asana (prices vary; free version available), I once again forgot to restrain myself. Asana can function as a personal to-do list and organizer; collaborative personal to-do list if you want to interact with, say,?family members only; or a?project management app for small teams. I was so excited to schedule and assign every task and necessary purchase to complete a kitchen remodel that I never wrote them down elsewhere. I'm now locked into using Asana to see my kitchen makeover and couple other projects through to completion?and that is by no means a bad thing. ?

?

Asana offers all the right tools for managing?teamwork,?light collaboration, and tasks, such as deadline settings, priority and label options, and a flexible and nimble work environment.?

Although Asana can also be a project-management app,?I wouldn't recommend using the free version?for complex projects?in place of specialized PM software, such as Basecamp or Huddle.?The free version?conquers basic teamwork and personal projects with ease, but it doesn't expand in a way that would accommodate complex projects well. For that, you'll have to pay.?

Pricing
For the low, low price of nothing,?Asana doles out some pretty extraordinary services. The free account supports up to 30 members and unlimited projects and tasks. Paid account holders get a few additional features, such as project permissions and priority support, and the cost?scales up depending on the number of users: $300 per month for 50 members, $550 per month for 75 members, $800 per month for 100 members.?

Design and Features
Thoughtful design makes the main workspace in Asana bend to your needs. The dashboard is divided into three sections.?A rail along the left shows your workspace overview, containing all your groups and projects. From this pane, you can add a new member, start a new project, create a group, and manage tags. The middle section changes based on which project you select on the left to show?all the tasks contained therein. Select an item in this middle section, and the?third pane on the far right drills down into more details about that item. For example, if I select my Kitchen Work project, and highlight the task "Purchase floor files," I can see on the far right that I've assigned this task to my partner to complete by September 4. I can also see the image of tiles I like uploaded and attached to the task.

The ability to move tasks around in Asana, ad hoc, makes the Web app unique. Tasks glide across the screen when you simply?click and?drag them to change their order?(the app was built in HTML 5). It's a piece of cake to reprioritize, say, purchasing that kitchen tile, without actually changing the due date by simply dragging up to the top of the list.?

Asana's fluidity makes it?feels similar to a great iPad app that leverages all possibilities of multitouch gestures in its design, such as Flipboard, for example. The list of projects, however, is fixed in alphabetical order. I'd love to be able to reorder those, too.?

When you resize the browser window, Asana likewise?resizes appropriately to preserve the middle and right panes while hiding the left one?but not entirely. It peeks out so you can see it and access it quickly.?

Asana didn't skimp on features. When you create a task, you can assign it to a member, schedule a due date, upload associated documents, write comments, add tags, and even subscribe or unsubscribe to notifications regarding changes to the task.?Asana gives each member an inbox for mail, and that's where?notifications appear.??

Interactive checkboxes let you tick off tasks as you complete them?and just as easily untick them if you or another Asana member strikes something off in error.?

Someone at Asana had power users in mind when it came time to put the final touches on the?interface design because a short list of essential keyboard shortcuts appears on the footer. Also along the bottom are quick links to tutorial videos, which you can hide if you prefer. ?

I do have one issue with the design, but it doesn't really apply so much to individuals as to larger teams. Asana doesn't compartmentalize much. Everything you want to find is, for the most part, located on one screen, rather than tucked away under a series of tabs, or windows-within-windows, as it were. What this means for larger project management tasks and bigger group projects is that Asana can look very cluttered, which is a productivity inhibitor.?

No Downloadable Version
While Asana's speed and responsiveness in testing never faltered, and I love the fact that I can access Asana from anywhere I have an Internet connection,?I do wish the app were available offline, too. Currently, Asana is Web-only. Even its iOS app requires a connection to work.?

As much as I believe in "the cloud," I still prefer hybrid approaches to software, apps that allow me to work offline when I need to, but automatically sync my changes to my Web account when I'm through. Rely on an always-on Internet connection, and you have no failsafe for Internet service or power outages, or other times when you can't get online. And it's not like these things are rare.?Anyone who lives or works in a developing country or a region with nasty weather (Texas in summer?) simply doesn't expect hiccup-free Internet 24/7. Frequent travelers, too, often prefer to work offline than connect to airport Wi-Fi for a measly 25 minutes every time they're waiting to board. Asana already flies very high, but?if?users also had an option to work offline on a?downloadable app,?it could soar.?

Asana for Personal Task-Management and Light Teamwork
Asana's thoughtful design, fluid interactive elements, and generous member allotment in its free version make it a powerful task-management app for personal projects and light teamwork. The paid version provides the few extra features you'd need to use it for more complex?project management (except for offline access). Depending on your needs, however, the free version of Basecamp, our Editors' Choice for free Web-based PM software, may be a better bet.?

Has India solved the problem of banking regulation?

Forget Glass-Steagall:

The branches are run almost entirely by and for the children, with account holders electing two volunteer managers from the group every six months.

?Children who make money by begging or selling drugs are not allowed to open an account. This bank is only for children who believe in hard work,? said Karan, a 14-year-old ?manager?.

During the day, Karan earns a pittance washing up at wedding banquets or other events. In the evening, he sits at his desk to collect money from his friends, update their pass books and close the bank.

?Some account holders want to withdraw their money. I ask them why and give it to them if other children approve. Everyone earns five per cent interest on their savings.?

This system now has over two hundred branches in half a dozen countries.? The article is here, hat tip goes to Kottke.? If I understand the account correctly, it is also run largely by street children.

FDA Approves Combination Drug for Colorectal Cancer | TopNews ...

ZaltrapIt has been found in a recent report that the U. S. Food and Drug Administration has given its approval for the drug Zaltrap (ziv-afilbercept) tested in a trial for advanced metastatic colorectal cancer to be given with another medicine.

The report says that the concerns were raised on noticing that colorectal cancer was acting as the fourth highest killer of people in the United States. While some 51,690 are being expected to die this year, almost 143,460 Americans are being hoped to be diagnosed with the same.

Zaltrap is drug used for restraining the growth of tumour as it inhibits their blood supply. The medication comes under angiogenesis inhibitors, which is a class of drugs.

Though, the drug was previously also allowed for being prescribed to those patients whose cancerous tumour becomes resistant to a received oxaliplatin-based chemotherapy. Also, it was given to those who tend to develop the disease further even after getting the chemotherapy doses.

It is now being said that the drug would be prescribed in a combo. Thus, as per the findings, a FOLFIRI chemotherapy regimen has also been certified along with the drug, which is meant for adults. The regimen comprises of fluorouracil and folinic acid as well as irinotecan.

Why We're Obsessed with Mars

It's easy to forget there was life believed to be on Mars 60 years ago.

Before the Mariner flybys in the 1960s, scientists thought Mars had water and life, even if it was just some sort of plantlike lichen.

"Mars' spectrum, its color in the near infrared, mimics that of vegetation. Back in the '50s and '60s, they concluded that was evidence of chlorophyll, and Mars had vegetation," said Josh Bandfield, a Mars expert and planetary scientist at the University of Washington.

And if there were plants believed to be living on the planet, well, it wasn't so far-fetched to invent invading aliens in pop culture, whether they were evil mind controllers ("Invaders from Mars") or goofy intruders with peculiar genetic defects ("Mars Needs Women"). Thanks to NASA, which has yet to find life on Mars, in present day it's humans who brave space, landing on a lifeless desert. From pulp fiction to literary thrillers, changing scientific knowledge of Mars has influenced the planet's place in art.

For scientists, dreams of life on Mars persist: When the Curiosity rover lands Sunday, Aug. 5, at 10:30 p.m. PDT (1:30 a.m. EDT, 0530 GMT),it will try to determine if Mars could support microbial life. [Full Coverage: Mars Curiosity Landing]

But absent little green men, what drives our culture's fascination with Mars?

Mars' mystique

"There was just enough of a possibility that Mars might be able to support an intelligent population that made it fascinating for masses of people," said Bob Crossley, emeritus professor of English at the University of Massachusetts in Boston and author of the book "Imagining Mars: A Literary History" (Wesleyan, 2011).

Yet Crossley, who is old enough to remember the era of Mars life, said there is more to the planet's mystique. "Somewhere deep in my own psyche, and maybe for other people as well, there is a desire for another world," he said. "For me, the deepest meaning of Mars is it represents some kind of longing for something outside ourselves, something outside our own world."

As one of our closest and most familiar neighbors, the Red Planet has served as the source of legends since the first storytellers slept under the stars. With its 24.6-hour day and snowy polar caps, Mars is really the only place that looks promising for life ? whether alien or an outpost for humans. In modern times, that makes it a perfect slate for allegories about human behavior, from the recently deceased sci-fi author and space visionary Ray Bradbury's critiques of American culture to Kim Stanley Robinson's sci-fi books on the ecological and sociological sustainability on Mars. [5 Mars Myths & Misconceptions]

Our interest in the past century has waxed and waned with the planet's proximity to Earth, said Bill Sheehan, a psychiatrist, amateur astronomer and author of the book "Mars: The Lure of the Red Planet" (Prometheus Books, 2001).

A close approach in 1956 coincided with fears of communism. During the 1950s, America was swept up in anti-communist paranoia provoked by Sen. Joseph McCarthy and the House Committee on Un-American Activities. "The increasing interest in Mars, and the general state of anxiety, almost panic, for the communist threat, was really the perfect recipe for an episode of alien hysteria," said Sheehan.

On the big screen and in books, because Mars was still thought to hold vegetal life, the planet was an unparalled source of evil scary monsters, ushering in some of the best and worst alien movies of the 1950s and 1960s. But writers such as Bradbury, who were critical of government policies, also commented via stories set on Mars. "It worked both ways, as a form of propaganda and cultural criticism," said Crossley.

Even though the 1964 film "Santa Claus Conquers the Martians" might have been best left in the can, the volume of books and films produced during this era ensured Mars entered the public consciousness and never left.

Wax and wane

"The nature of people's interest in Mars has evolved in the last 50 or 60 years, but it's never entirely vanished," said Crossley.

In the 1960s, the early Mariner missions prompted a radical change in our relationship with Mars, when images showed an apparently dead, cratered planet.

"The flyby showed pictures of a very moonlike landscape, which had a staggering effect," said Sheehan. "It left people quite demoralized." NASA's expeditions may have killed some of the Red Planet's romanticism, Sheehan believes.

"The less defined an object is like Mars, the more evocative it is. We use it as a Rorschach to project our hopes and fears on to. As Mars becomes more explored, it becomes a more quotidian setting that no longer captures the imagination," Sheehan said.

After the Mariner missions, it took years before Mars again became a destination for humans in popular culture. These days, authors must tread carefully with reams of scientific data available for consumers who are feeling contradictory.

"Mars in popular culture today is in inseparable from the science of Mars," said Crossley.

Sheehan notes that big-screen farces like "Mars Attacks" and "Total Recall" may go down easily, but attempts to accurately recreate the Red Planet seem to bomb at the box office. Take "John Carter," a movie detailing what happens when a Civil War veteran is transplanted to the Red Planet: "That was one of the most disastrous movies of last summer," said Sheehan.

Nowadays, how does a movie producer (or NASA) drum up excitement about Mars when a teenager can virtually drive a rover across its rocky red dust?

For Erika Harnett, a space physicist who grew up on sci-fi stories, it?s the tantalizing feeling that the reality of Mars is within reach.

"We understand Mars to a degree that we have not even come close to on any other planets or moons. I think what gets a lot of scientists excited is no different than what gets the public excited: the idea of when can we send people there, can we find life on Mars," said Harnett, a professor at the University of Washington.

Murray routs Federer to win tennis gold

Britain's Andy Murray demolished Roger Federer 6-2, 6-1, 6-4 in the Olympic men's final on Sunday to win his first gold medal and avenge his Wimbledon final defeat against the world number one.

Just four weeks after breaking down in tears when Federer shattered his hopes of a first Wimbledon title, Murray returned to Centre Court to rout the Swiss great in just one hour and 56 minutes.

Murray, who has denied Federer a coveted first singles gold, could yet finish the Games with two gold medals as he will be back in action in the mixed doubles final with partner Laura Robson against Max Mirnyi and Victoria Azarenka of Belarus later on Sunday.

It is the greatest moment of Murray's career to date and just reward for an astonishing display that must rank alongside the best ever seen on the sport's most hallowed court.

The 25-year-old Scot, beaten in three Grand Slam finals by Federer, has been in superb form all week, but even he can't have dreamed he would win gold like this.

Not only did the world number four do it by beating the Swiss for the first time since 2010, Murray also handed the 17-time Grand Slam winner his heaviest defeat in a major final since Rafael Nadal thrashed him for the loss of just four games in the 2008 French Open final.

For Federer, a doubles gold medallist with Stanislas Wawrinka in Beijing in 2008, this final was meant to be the crowning glory of his career.

Instead, Federer, who will be 35 by the time the Rio Games are in full swing in 2016, may wonder if he will ever get a chance to win the Golden Slam of all four majors and singles gold.

Murray had hoped the final would be staged with the Centre Court roof open as he felt his Wimbledon defeat was in part due to Federer thriving after a switch to indoor play when rain hit when the match was level at one-set all.

He got his wish as the heavy rain that lashed the All England Club earlier in the day relented just before the scheduled start.

And when Murray gave Federer two break points in the opening game, his response to the crisis, a series of perfectly-placed winners, was symbolic of his impressive form this week.

The Scot's new-found maturity and increased muscularity are a potent package and he set about Federer with controlled fury in the sixth game.

A fine serve from Federer saved the first of two break points, but Murray came up with a searing return on the next and the Swiss could only direct his forehand into the net.

Everything that Federer threw at Murray was sent back with interest by the Scot, who clinched the first set with a second break when he smashed a backhand winner down the line.

Murray had taken the first set in the Wimbledon final as well before missing a chance to break in the second and then running out of steam.

He wasn't going to make the same mistake again.

In the second game of the second set, Federer put an easy smash into the net before the Scot enjoyed a slice of luck as two net cords in quick succession went his way to secure the break.

Federer tried to stem the tide in the next game, an epic struggle that featured six break points for the Swiss. But Murray wouldn't be denied and found the right response on each occasion.

The Swiss great had never been given such a torrid time on his favourite Centre Court. He looked shell-shocked by Murray's assault and served a double-fault on break point in the next game to give the Scot his eighth successive game.

With the second set in the bag, Murray kept his foot on the gas in the third and delivered the knockout blow when he produced a stunning winner to break for a 3-2 lead.

Federer had nothing left in response and Murray sealed the win with two thunderous aces before clambering into the players' box to embrace his family and backroom staff.

Olympic Viewing: Era ending for Gaines, too

There was a real sadness in Rowdy Gaines' voice as he called Michael Phelps' 17th gold medal-winning race and last individual Olympics competition.

"I'm going to miss that man," the NBC swimming analyst said.

The curtain officially closed Saturday on the Phelps era with his final medley relay race and 18th gold medal. The swimmer said he's retiring after London and has looked like it, appearing relaxed and reflective in interviews. Gaines and partner Dan Hicks have covered Phelps in four of the five Olympics where they have been partners for NBC.

"I thank God every day that we had him in our sport and nobody else had him in theirs," Gaines said.

NBC will miss him, too. The network announced that it would air a retrospective on Phelps' career Sunday at 7 p.m. EDT and PDT, featuring Bob Costas' lengthy interview with the swimmer. "Michael Phelps: America's Golden Champion" will last an hour.

Gaines, himself a three-time gold medal-winning swimmer, said Phelps has clearly done more for swimming than anyone else in its history.

They've had a friendly relationship, although Phelps appears to have used some of Gaines' words as motivation. While calling a race in 2003, Gaines suggested that Phelps had started off too quickly and wouldn't be able to maintain his pace. Phelps won, setting a world record for time in the process.

After many of his subsequent wins, as recently as last year, Phelps would needle Gaines: "Did I fade in that race, Rowdy?"

When Phelps lost his first final of the London Olympics to Ryan Lochte, Gaines was blunt in his assessment that Phelps had not properly trained for the event. Gaines didn't consider that criticism because Phelps himself had admitted the same thing.

Gaines questions whether Phelps will, or should, retire from swimming after London.

"He doesn't have to have a job," he said. "It's not like he has to go to work as a banker to make money. He can live off being Michael Phelps."

He'd advise Phelps to take a couple of years off and then see how he feels. Phelps would still be young enough to be competitive in the 2016 Games, and there would be no pressure, he said. "Maybe it's just wishful thinking," he said.

There's already speculation that Phelps, poised and comfortable on camera, could head into broadcasting.

Could he wind up taking Gaines' job some day?

"I'm long past due that they put me out to pasture," said Gaines, who has worked for NBC since 1992. "I wouldn't be surprised at all. He'd be really good at it. I'd welcome him. I'd rather have him in a pool, but I'd welcome him."

RATINGS: NBC's Friday night telecast was seen by 28.5 million viewers, Nielsen said. That's the smallest audience so far from London, but Friday is generally a slow night for TV viewing. No televised Olympics ever has seen audiences of 28.5 million or higher for its first eight nights.
