DAVIE, Fla. (AP) ? For Chad Johnson, a weekend confrontation with his wife has led to repercussions beyond a misdemeanor charge and NFL unemployment.
VH1 pulled the series "Ev and Ocho" from its schedule, citing "the seriousness of the allegations" against Johnson. The network said Monday it had no plans to air the show.
The Dolphins terminated Johnson's contract Sunday night, about 24 hours after he was arrested in a domestic battery case involving his wife, Evelyn Lozada, who is on the reality TV show "Basketball Wives."
Coach Joe Philbin says the decision to release the six-time Pro Bowl receiver wasn't based on any single incident and wasn't made to send a message. Instead, Philbin decided Johnson and the Dolphins were simply a bad fit.

I found this video on the Laissez-Faire Books blog after Jeff Tucker posted it recently.
It?s an entertaining and educational video that provides anecdotes about how and why small businesses grow. In the case of LEGO, because they had to? the owner-operator of the company had no golden parachute to fall back on if he failed. This kept him thinking creatively about how to solve the many challenges he and his business faced. It was ?find a way? or else he and his children would starve.
It?s a story of entrepreneurialism, the essence of which is experimentation, vision and constant change.
As you watch the video, it?s hard to imagine a story like this being told about anything other than an initially small, local, privately-owned business. It perfectly captures the idea of the ?benevolent dictatorship? style of business and capital management. We also get a look at the innovative process that leads to the creation of a whole new industry (or sub-industry, much like the iPhone was an emergent sub-industry within the industry of smartphones).
ScienceDaily (Aug. 13, 2012) ? Both heredity and environment play a role in congenital heart defects, but exactly how various risk factors influence the development of the heart during pregnancy has been a mystery -- until now.
With the aid of a supercomputer, an international, interdisciplinary research team has analysed millions of data points. This has allowed the scientists to show that a huge number of different risk factors -- for example in the form of genetic defects -- influence the molecular biology of heart development.
"The discovery of a biological common denominator among many thousands of risk factors is an important step in health research, which in time can improve the prevention and diagnosis of congenital heart defects," explains Professor Lars Allan Larsen from the Department of Cellular and Molecular Medicine, University of Copenhagen.
Research results have recently been published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences. The project was supported by the Danish Heart Association, Novo Nordisk Foundation and Danish National Research Foundation, among others.
Tailored treatment in future
Scientists have analysed several thousand genetic mutations and environmental risk factors associated with heart malformations in the hope of finding a pattern or common factor.
"Our investigations show that many different genetic factors together with environmental factors can influence the same biological system and cause disease. The results are also interesting in a broader perspective, because it is probable that similar interactions are also valid for diseases such as schizophrenia, autism, diabetes and cancer," says Kasper Lage, Director of Bioinformatics at Harvard University.
Thus the results of the study give scientists an idea of how different combinations of variations in hereditary material can dispose the individual to disease: "This is interesting if we want to make treatment more efficient by tailoring an optimal approach for each individual patient," adds Professor S?ren Brunak from the Novo Nordisk Foundation Center for Protein Research, University of Copenhagen.
Complex pattern creation provides new knowledge
When the international research team brought a systems biology perspective to bear on the huge data mass, they could see previously unknown and complex correlations between known risk factors and heart biology:
"Systems biology is a relatively new and holistic research field that uses bioinformatics and supercomputers to investigate highly complex biological problems. For example, we know of a number of genetic mutations that cause heart defects -- but it is first now we have been able to show which biological systems in the heart are influenced by the mutations in question," explains Professor Lars Allan Larsen.
The research approach of systems biology can lead to surprising and pioneering conclusions, but the work is difficult and requires a great degree of interdisciplinary collaboration. In this case team members include genetic scientists, cardiac specialists and experts in bioinformatics from universities, hospitals and industry.

TORONTO (AP) ? The National Hockey League Players' Association has made its first proposal in the latest round of collective bargaining talks with the NHL.
The union said its proposal to the league includes a smaller percentage of revenues for players and an expanded revenue sharing program to help struggling teams.
Donald Fehr, the executive director of the NHL Players' Association, said the proposal could "stabilize the industry."
Fehr said players are set to surrender as much as $465 million in revenue under the proposal if the league continues to grow at an average rate. He says that number could balloon to $800 million if the league grows at the same rate it has over the last two seasons.
"We do believe that the proposal the players made today, once implemented, can produce a stable industry ... that can give us a chance to move beyond the recurring labor strife that has plagued the NHL the last two decades," Fehr said.
Pittsburgh's Sidney Crosby, Washington's Alex Ovechkin, Tampa Bay's Steven Stamkos and Ottawa's Jason Spezza were among 23 players that participated in the meeting Tuesday in Toronto.
"I like it a lot," Crosby said of the proposal. "I think, as Don said, it's addressing the issues that the league has. (We're) making sure as players that we do our part to help those (struggling) teams out, but also holding the teams accountable.
"At the end of the day, it's going to take both (sides) to do that."
An NHL proposal last month called for a significant decrease for players in revenue share by introducing new contract restrictions, including a five-year cap on deals. The NHLPA has proposed a three-year deal for a CBA with an option for a fourth, Fehr said.
The proposal would have the players accepting a lower percentage of the revenues over the first three years. The fourth year would see the CBA revert to its current terms.
NHL commissioner Gary Bettman said Tuesday he has received the union's proposal and hopes to continue talks Wednesday.
"Our hope is we can take care of business in the next month," Bettman said. "That's our goal."
Bettman said the owners would carefully consider the latest proposal.
"It's clear to me that they didn't put it together in an hour or two, and as a result we're going to need to take a little bit of time to evaluate it, understand it," Bettman said. "If we're going to respond, we want to respond appropriately."
The current deal expires Sept. 15.
"Everything that we've done has been well thought out," Spezza said. "There's a reason behind our proposal. The biggest reason is because we want to try to find a way to play and find a way to reach a fair agreement."
Fehr has said the players are willing to work past Sept. 15 if an agreement hasn't been signed, as long as one is on the horizon. Bettman has already said the NHL is prepared to lock out its players if no deal is reached by then. Negotiations have been under way for seven weeks. The regular season is slated to begin on Oct. 11.
Fehr said the proposal, "should lead to a new CBA."
"Players did not believe the owner's initial proposal was appropriate," he said.
Both sides acknowledged negotiations are firm and constructive.
"In essence, when you boil it all down, what we're suggesting is that the players partner with the financially stronger owners to stabilize the industry," Fehr said, "and assist the less financially strong ownership groups."
The NHL has had two seasons disrupted by labor disputes over the past two decades. In addition to the cancellation of the 2004-05 season, almost half of the 1994-95 season was wiped out by a labor dispute. Training camps are scheduled to start on Sept. 16, one day after the current CBA ends.
"The players want a new CBA," Fehr said. "And they want it soon."

One day after Mitt Romney announced that Wisconsin Congressman Paul Ryan will be his Vice President, the GOP ticket sat down with CBS' 60 Minutes.
Veteran journalist Bob Schieffer definitely did not hold back, asking the 42-year-old Ryan what his role would be: “Are you gonna be the attack dog?”
Ryan's response was direct: “I’m gonna help him win the race.”
Paul Ryan, Mitt Romney on 60 Minutes
In typical Ryan fashion, he was low-key and calm about it, but game for a fight. “It was one against two for awhile, now it’s two against two,” he said.
When the conversation turned to tax returns - a hot topic given Romney's reluctance to release more than to years - Ryan stumbled briefly at first.
“I’m going to release the same amount of years as Governor Romney has,” he said. “I’m gonna be releasing two, which is what he’s releasing."
"But what I hear from people around the [United States], they’re not asking where are the tax returns. They’re asking where the jobs are.”
Deftly pivoting to his preferred talking points (and frankly, issues that are actually important), Ryan successfully avoided that potential quagmire.
The 60 Minutes interview ended with Romney being asked about his gaffe when he announced Ryan as “the next President of the United States.”
Romney laughed about it, before noting that President Obama did the same thing four years ago when he introduced current V.P. Joe Biden.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) ? An accreditation warning issued to Penn State is serious and necessary given the issues raised by a recent child sex-abuse scandal, but the school is unlikely to lose the all-important designation, experts said Tuesday.
They also expect the university to comply quickly with demands to show that its governance, finances and integrity meet standards set by its accreditation agency, the Middle States Commission on Higher Education.
"This is an entirely appropriate and anticipated action by Middle States given the strategic importance of voluntary peer review," said American Council on Education president Molly Corbett Broad. "It's really the basis on which public accountability is achieved in American higher education."
The Philadelphia-based Middle States Commission issued the warning last week based on the school's handling of molestation allegations against Jerry Sandusky, a former assistant football coach convicted in June of sexually abusing 10 boys.
Concerns include whether Penn State trustees provide sufficient oversight of the administration, the strength of the university's ethical standards and the school's compliance with government policies, such as those requiring campus crime reports, said Middle States spokesman Richard Pokrass.
The commission also wants the school to address its financial status in light of a $60 million penalty imposed by the NCAA and any lawsuits from Sandusky's victims.
Penn State must submit a report to the agency by Sept. 30. A small team of accreditors would then visit the school in State College.
"The university has been very cooperative," Pokrass said Tuesday. "The leadership of the university is aware of what the concerns are and have been taking very positive steps."
Penn State is now one of about 15 schools in the Mid-Atlantic region with a warning.
Most institutions work their way off warning status within a year to 18 months, Pokrass said. Those that don't are put on probation.
Schools lose accreditation after two years of noncompliance, starting with the warning. Students cannot use federal funds ? including Pell grants and government loans ? to attend unaccredited schools.
Penn State stressed that it remains accredited and that academic programs are not being questioned.
"This action has nothing to do with the quality of education our students receive," Blannie Bowen, vice provost for academic affairs, said in a statement.
Judith Eaton, president of the Commission on Higher Education Accreditation, said Tuesday that Penn State has "a fine reputation" and the resources to rebound from this setback. It's "highly unlikely" the school will end up on probation, let alone lose its accreditation, she said.
Still, accreditation warnings are important tools because governments typically don't take action against colleges and universities, Broad said. Accreditation agencies provide accountability through standards enforcement and peer evaluation of academic programs, university leadership, financial stability and institutional honor.
"This is serious both for our own sense of integrity and well-being within higher education," Broad said.
The school that most recently lost its accreditation from Middle States was Baltimore International College, a culinary school in Maryland.
Pokrass said it lost its accreditation about nine months ago because of finances, a lack of assessment of student learning and issues regarding student services. It is now owned and operated by Stratford University, an accredited for-profit institution based in Virginia.
Middle States accredits more than 525 colleges and universities in five states plus the District of Columbia, two U.S. territories and several international locations.

Bill Maher stopped by the HuffPost Live studio in L.A. Tuesday afternoon to talk with host Jacob Soboroff about Mitt Romney, Paul Ryan, voter ID laws and Los Angeles's ban on medical marijuana. The host of HBO's Real Time with Bill Maher is returning to TV this Friday night after a six-week break from the show.
Maher had a hilarious take on Paul Ryan (seen above), claiming that Mitt Romney's running mate has only two ideas, and expressing confusion over why some conservatives see him as different than Sarah Palin.
"Somehow he's the smartest guy in the party and she's the stupidest woman on earth, but they agree on everything," he said.
Maher also waxed on about Los Angeles's medical marijuana laws, explained why he prefers to smoke pot from a dealer rather than a dispensary, and criticized Obama for being "a dismal failure and a liar" on drug policy:
He also managed to call host Jacob Soboroff a "pussy" and a "bastard" in a matter of minutes while discussing his $1 million donation to the Obama campaign:
