Improve Your Home With This Sound Advice | lmaureen.com

One of the easiest ways to be more green and resourceful in your home, is to look for appliances and items that are energy star certified or energy efficient. This way you will be doing your part to conserve energy, lower your overall costs, and make the planet more efficient over time.

Before painting, stripping wallpaper, or performing other updates to your walls, remove all of the outlet covers and switchplates from the room in which you are working. This ensures that the covers remain free of paint splatters, and when you reinstall them over the painted surface, the results will be seamless.

When you are updating your home do it one room at a time. Taking on too much do it yourself home improvement at one time can be stressful, create a mess within your home, and perhaps burn you out. You can save yourself time and money by taking it one step at a time.

The canny homeowner pays for quality, not name recognition when buying home improvement materials. Many expensive fixtures and fittings cost so much because they have recognizable brand names and fancy styling. Other fixtures are expensive because they are exceptionally durable and well-made. Learning to spot the difference and spending money on the latter is the way to get the most out of a home improvement budget.

If you are considering hanging wallpaper in your bathroom, laundry room, or kitchen, opt for wet-look vinyl. This type of wallpaper is able to withstand sprinkles, splashes, and splatters and is also ideal for use in homes in even the most humid climate. Be sure to clean and smooth the wall surface before hanging vinyl, however, as any imperfections may show through.

Flooring can be a relatively simple home improvement project even for a novice. Focus on putting tile in your kitchen and bathrooms and replace your carpet with hardwood flooring. Home improvement stores have a wealth of information about how to make this process easy for you to complete.

One great way to make the inside of your home sparkle is to put new molding in. New molding helps create a fresh sense in your living space. You can purchase special molding with beautiful carvings on them to add an unique touch of elegance and style to your home.

Brighten up your dining room with table linens. By using tablecloths and runners on your dining table, you can achieve an unique look that can be changed with every season. As well as creating an attractive dining environment, they protect your table from scratches. Try to pick a material that is easily washable and stain resistant.

Wrap your water heater in an insulation kit to improve energy usage and efficiency. Kits are available for any size or model water heater and the savings generated from increased efficiency quickly offsets the cost of the insulating kit. Water heater installation kits are also easy to install, making this a simple do it yourself home improvement project.

Plug in some motion sensing night lights. At a minimum, you should consider plugging in one in every strategically located outlet between your bedrooms and the bathroom. You can now obtain these lights at the dollar stores for very reasonable prices. Think of the reassurance they will provide!

When moving any type of furniture through your home, it?s important that you protect your floors. A lot of people with hardwood floors will definitely make sure to protect them, but you also need to protect carpet. Most carpet can easily tear if you?re dragging heavy objects across the surface.

Planting a row of hedges can provide one with a home improvement project that will beautify their outside area while also providing a privacy screen to the home. Many different plants can be chosen one to get the best fit for ones needs and tastes. Hedges can be a way to improve one?s home.

Cutting boards are an important asset to your kitchen. A great way to prolong the life of your wooden cutting board is by heating mineral oil in a bowl of hot water and then rubbing it on the scuffed spots with a soft cloth. This should help repair your cutting board for quite a few more uses.

If you are buying tools and equipment for a home improvement project, don?t cheap out on the essentials. For example, a cheaply-built ladder will often fall apart while being used and low-quality paintbrushes may shed bristles into the paint, leaving ugly marks on the walls. Aim for middle-grade equipment if you are on a budget, otherwise, you may be in for some nasty accidents.

If the outside of your house isn?t appealing to you, then chances are your neighbors feel the same way. Look at your shutters, and see if they could use a new coat of paint or need straightening. Make sure your driveway is not in disrepair as this is what welcomes visitors to your home. You want it to be inviting.

Now that you have seen how easy it is to find the strategies to give your home, not just added beauty, but added value, it is time to get started on that home improvement project. The practical tips from this article will give you the information that you need for success.

To stop Mitt, Obama targets NC, Florida, Ohio

Our presidential elections, pundits sometimes remind us, are not national contests, but rather contests in 50 states and the District of Columbia. And since most states lean heavily to one party or the other these days, the only real contests are in a dozen or so target states.

Once upon a time, most states were in play. In the 1976 contest between Gerald Ford and Jimmy Carter, 30 states with 396 electoral votes were carried by less than 10 percent of the votes. Three-quarters of voters lived in those states.

In 2008, the field of play was much smaller. The candidates' percentage margins were less than 10 percent in only 15 states with 159 electoral votes. Less than one-third of voters lived in those states.

In 1976 all the eight largest states were carried by less than 10 percent. In 2008 only two, Florida and Ohio, were.

Admittedly 1976 was an extreme case. Both nominees were from regions -- south Georgia, outstate Michigan -- that were their parties' historic heartlands but where each party was in long-term decline. And 2008 was an extreme case in the other direction.

But while the list of target states has become shorter, it isn't etched in stone. It can change from election to election.

There's a tendency to ignore this because in recent history, from the middle 1990s to the middle of the last decade, voting behavior was unusually static. Only three states cast their electoral votes for different parties in the 2000 and 2004 elections.

But voters in different states and regions don't always move in tandem. The 2008 election was a good example. And 2012 seems to be another.

Several analysts have noted that Barack Obama seems to be stronger in recent target state polling than one might extrapolate from national polls.

Some have argued that this is due to overly Democratic samples in some cases. Others have argued that it represents a response to ads attacking Mitt Romney's business record.

Each explanation is plausible. But I've noticed something else looking at the RealClearPolitics.com average of recent polls in states on various target lists and comparing Obama's current percentages in polls with his percentage of the actual vote in November 2008.

In three states, Obama is currently polling only 3 or 4 percent below his actual vote in 2008 -- North Carolina, Florida and Ohio. Probably not coincidentally, these were three of the four states where his winning percentages were lowest (in the fourth, Indiana, he seems far behind this year).

In 2008 the Obama campaign was able to spot openings in previously safe Republican states and use its money advantage to carry them. It looks like the 2012 Obama campaign has been concentrating its money, as well as appearances by the president and Cabinet members, in these three states with 62 electoral votes in the hope that they will be a firewall preventing Romney from reaching the 270-vote majority.

But it looks like the Obama forces won't be able to heavily outspend the Republicans from now on. And the risk is that if opinion moves against them by a few more points in these firewall states it will also do so in other states that weren't necessarily on the target list in 2008 but are now.

These include the manufacturing states of Michigan and Indiana, with 27 electoral votes, where Obama's current poll numbers are roughly 10 percent behind his 2008 showing, and Missouri, with 10 electoral votes, which he nearly carried in 2008 but which now looks out of reach.

They also include six states with 46 electoral votes that have very low percentages of black voters -- Colorado, Iowa, Minnesota, New Hampshire, Oregon and Wisconsin. Obama carried all these handily but his current polling is 6 to 9 points behind his 2008 percentage.

And they include Virginia, with 13 electoral votes, the one state that matched the national percentages for Obama and John McCain and where Obama's current polling lead is 47 to 44 percent.

All these 10 states, with 96 electoral votes, cast more votes for Republicans than Democrats in 2010 House elections. That was true also in Pennsylvania and Nevada, which together have 26 electoral votes.

Poll numbers are imprecise and subject of course to change. My point is that the list of target states has changed and gotten larger -- and could change and grow even more.

Common parasite may trigger suicide attempts

Friday, August 17, 2012

A parasite thought to be harmless and found in many people may actually be causing subtle changes in the brain, leading to suicide attempts.

New research appearing in the August issue of The Journal of Clinical Psychiatry adds to the growing work linking an infection caused by the Toxoplasma gondii parasite to suicide attempts. Michigan State University's Lena Brundin was one of the lead researchers on the team.

About 10-20 percent of people in the United States have Toxoplasma gondii, or T. gondii, in their bodies, but in most it was thought to lie dormant, said Brundin, an associate professor of experimental psychiatry in MSU's College of Human Medicine. In fact, it appears the parasite can cause inflammation over time, which produces harmful metabolites that can damage brain cells.

"Previous research has found signs of inflammation in the brains of suicide victims and people battling depression, and there also are previous reports linking Toxoplasma gondii to suicide attempts," she said. "In our study we found that if you are positive for the parasite, you are seven times more likely to attempt suicide."

The work by Brundin and colleagues is the first to measure scores on a suicide assessment scale from people infected with the parasite, some of whom had attempted suicide.

The results found those infected with T. gondii scored significantly higher on the scale, indicative of a more severe disease and greater risk for future suicide attempts. However, Brundin stresses the majority of those infected with the parasite will not attempt suicide: "Some individuals may for some reason be more susceptible to develop symptoms," she said.

"Suicide is major health problem," said Brundin, noting the 36,909 deaths in 2009 in America, or one every 14 minutes. "It is estimated 90 percent of people who attempt suicide have a diagnosed psychiatric disorder. If we could identify those people infected with this parasite, it could help us predict who is at a higher risk."

T. gondii is a parasite found in cells that reproduces in its primary host, any member of the cat family. It is transmitted to humans primarily through ingesting water and food contaminated with the eggs of the parasite, or, since the parasite can be present in other mammals as well, through consuming undercooked raw meat or food.

Brundin has been looking at the link between depression and inflammation in the brain for a decade, beginning with work she did on Parkinson's disease. Typically, a class of antidepressants called selective serotonin re-uptake inhibitors, or SSRIs, have been the preferred treatment for depression. SSRIs are believed to increase the level of a neurotransmitter called serotonin but are effective in only about half of depressed patients.

Brundin's research indicates a reduction in the brain's serotonin might be a symptom rather than the root cause of depression. Inflammation, possibly from an infection or a parasite, likely causes changes in the brain's chemistry, leading to depression and, in some cases, thoughts of suicide, she said.

"I think it's very positive that we are finding biological changes in suicidal patients," she said. "It means we can develop new treatments to prevent suicides, and patients can feel hope that maybe we can help them.

"It's a great opportunity to develop new treatments tailored at specific biological mechanisms."

NFL submits requested information in Vilma case

Federal judge Ginger Berrigan requested more information from NFL commissioner Roger Goodell regarding the league's timeline for handing down discipline to players, coaches and executives in the Saints' bounty scandal.

The NFL responded Thursday by submitting a letter from the NFLPA along with a sworn statement from Goodell, according to NBCSports.com. The NFL submitted a March 7, 2012, letter from former NFLPA general counsel Richard Berthelsen to NFL general counsel Jeff Pash in which Bethelsen requested a 60-day delay for disciplinary proceedings, according to the report.

The NFL seems to suggest this indicates the NFL did not improperly prejudge the four players suspended in the bounty investigation.

Goodell also issued a sworn statement indicating he was ready to administer the player discipline on March 21, the same day he announced suspensions for coaches and executives. But Goodell's statement says he agreed to delay announcing the player suspensions following a conversation with DeMaurice Smith, head of the players' union.

The case, in which Saints linebacker Jonathan Vilma has claimed defamation of character, requires showing Goodell acted with malice or reckless disregard for the truth.

The NFLPA and Goodell had until Friday to turn over details after Goodell intimated that he was ready to deliver punishment for players on March 21, when he announced suspensions for Saints coach Sean Payton, former defensive coordinator Gregg Williams, assistant head coach Joe Vitt, general manager Mickey Loomis and owner Tom Benson. However, the players' union asked Goodell not to rule on player punishment at that time.

The NFL obliged, and now Vilma's representatives argue that Goodell had already determined his own course of action and thereby also assumed guilt -- Vilma's and other players -- before he had all the facts.

Berrigan, a U.S. District Judge in Louisiana, isn't expected to rule immediately.

Berrigan suggested last week that she is in favor of Vilma receiving an injunction against his year-long suspension but isn't sure she has the authority to do so. That's because the league's collective bargaining agreement clears Goodell as the all-empowered disciplinarian in NFL matters.

However, a three-member panel is reviewing whether that arrangement is just and whether the pay-for-performance payments should be viewed as "on-field behavior" when the majority of evidence came from meeting rooms and locker rooms.
