Motorola Xyboard WiFi, Verizon 4G models get Android 4.0 updates

Motorola Droid Xyboard 8.2 review home screen

If you've embraced Motorola's vision of tablets warmly enough to have picked up a Xyboard 8.2 or 10.1, your loyalty is being rewarded. Both the WiFi versions and Verizon's Droid Xyboard variants should be receiving their Android 4.0 updates starting now, with everyone onboard over the course of the weeks ahead. Don't anticipate a Droid RAZR-style visual revamp: much like Google's regular jump from Android 3.2 to 4.0, the changes involve subtler components like the improved built-in browser and Face Unlock. The release is no Jelly Bean update, but we'd still call it a big step forward for fans of sharply-angled slabs.

Lonmin to SAfrica strikers: Work Monday or fired

MARIKANA, South Africa (AP) ? Miners must return to work Monday or face being fired from the platinum mine where rivalry between unions exploded into violence that led to the deaths of 44 people in a week, Lonmin PLC said Sunday. Thirty-four strikers were gunned down by police in one of the worst displays of state violence since apartheid ended in 1994.

President Jacob Zuma declared a week of national mourning starting Monday to commemorate the lives of all South Africans who have died violently, especially the 44 at Marikana mine.

"The nation is in shock and pain," Zuma said in a statement. "We must this week reflect on the sanctity of human life ... We must avoid finger-pointing and recrimination. We must unite against violence from whatever quarter."

Some 3,000 rock-drill operators called RDOs have been leading an illegal strike among the mine's 25,000-strong labor force plus 10,000 contractors. Intimidation and threats of violence kept many more away.

"The safety and security of our employees is paramount and nobody will be asked to report for duty if the police consider them in danger of reprisals," CFO Simon Scott said in a statement.

Lonmin had initially ordered miners to return to work by Friday, then, after the shootings, changed the deadline to Monday, spokeswoman Sue Vey said.

"The final ultimatum provides RDOs with a last opportunity to return to work or face possible dismissal," the company said in a statement Sunday. "Employees could therefore be dismissed if they fail to heed the final ultimatum."

Strikers said they were not sure what to do. The company has not responded to their demands for the minimum wage to be increased from R5,500 ($688) to R12,500 ($1,560).

Last year after a similar dispute over labor representation stopped work at its nearby Karee mine, Lonmin fired all 9,000 workers. Then it asked them to reapply for their jobs and most were rehired.

"Because we work as a majority, if the majority goes back to work tomorrow I'm going too," said miner Vuyisile Mchiza.

But "If the majority is not going back to work tomorrow, I'm not going either because I won't be able to go to work while others are sitting grieving."

Another vowed not to go to work Monday, telling the South African Press Association that, "Expecting us to go back to work is like an insult ? many of our friends and colleagues are dead." He was not identified by name for fear of recriminations.

Jeff Mathunjwa, head of the union to which the strikers belong, said he was not talking to journalists until Tuesday, when asked how he was advising his members.

More than 100 people, miners, their families and local community members, processed past the mine Sunday singing hymns as they made their way to the dusty veld where police officers fired a barrage of shots from automatic rifles and pistols at a group of charging miners on Thursday.

A memorial was led by Pastor Sakhumzi Qiqimana of Marikana New Creation Ministry, who told those gathered: "Now we have no power to come in the middle of the negotiations of the company and the workers, but we are here now to pray and say 'God forgive us,' and now we are here to say 'This (killing) must stop.'"

Police say one of the charging miners shot at them first with a pistol and that they acted in self-defense. Earlier in the week, the strikers had butchered two captured police officers with machetes.

Lonmin said Saturday that it will pay for the educations of all children of mine employees killed in the unrest, up to university level.

A presidential statement Sunday said Zuma would announce the composition of a judicial commission of inquiry into the killings and its terms of reference within a few days. It said he had appointed 10 Cabinet ministers and a provincial premier to visit Marikana on Monday to lead support for bereaved families including the identification of bodies, burials and counseling.

Many people have said they do not know whether missing husbands and sons are among the dead, among 78 wounded, or among more than 250 arrested on charges ranging from public violence to murder.

Zuma urged South Africans to "reaffirm our belief in peace, stability and order and in building a caring society free of crime and violence."

The shootings have South Africans debating their country's magnified levels of violence, and the frequency with which they resort to violence to resolve disputes. South Africa has one of the highest murder and rape rates in the world.

Why Panera Bread Rocks: Business, Career, Customer Service and ...

As I started my business Deb Best Practices almost three years ago, Panera Bread was my go-to meeting place. ? Today, it?s still on my go-to in-person meeting list. ? Panera Bread Corporate needs to create a bumper sticker for my car:? My Other Office is at Panera Bread.

?

?

?

?

?

?

Seriously:? doesn?t that table in the bottom left of the above picture look like a conference room table?

Now, I?m a proud member of the Beahive in downtown Albany, and I?m thriving in that wonderful shared workspace.? However, before the Beahive debut in spring 2012, there weren?t many places a sole practitioner between appointments (or in need of an appropriate meeting space outside their home office) could get:

  • Great / healthy food
  • Free WiFi
  • Dining areas with plenty of table space and outlets which in retrospect, are laid out a lot like the Beahive shared workspace
  • Get written work, client / vendor meetings and work reading accomplished
  • Connect with peers, colleagues, potential customers /clients / partners / vendors, either planned or unplanned.

I?ve accomplished great work; achieved significant business milestones; and have conducted watershed conversations all within the Panera Bread shared work environment.

Downside to the Panera Bread shared work environment:? no network printers, faxes or other shared resources like I enjoy as a Beahive member; 30-minute limit on the WiFi during meal times (after all, their main business is food, and business / career hermit-crabbing at their restaurants is strictly a secondary grassroots development); and no organized networking /connector events and social media affinity marketing:

?

?

?

?

?

?

?

The Albany Beahive is also next door to Albany landmark Coulson?s (yes, where the NYS state employees bought the multi-million dollar NYS Lottery ticket a year or so ago) and the Beahive has many other options for food and caffeine within a block radius of its downtown / Broadway location.? And wisely, the Beahive is hosting events to benefit local nonprofits, such as the September 7th luncheon to benefit WERC, the Capital District Women?s Employment Resource Center.

Panera Bread Corporate continues to refine their business model and product offerings.? However, once again, it was the secondary grassroots response of the staff of one local Panera restaurant that knocked it out of the reputational park:? how that Nashua, New Hampshire Panera Bread staff not only said yes to a dying woman?s wish for clam chowder on a Tuesday when they only made it on Friday?s, they jumped at the opportunity to help, sealing the deal with a box of Panera cookies.? That clam chowder, according to her grandson, was the last solid food the dying woman ate as she continues to fail and move towards death.? That kindness has gone viral ? the type of news frankly we all need to hear more and create, a welcome balm in contrast to other recent stories citing apathy to elderly patients? needs.? You can?t buy the kind of client testimonials like the one the grandson gave freely in heartfelt gratitude.

Panera Bread is doing something right, to inspire all of this secondary grassroots good will and affinity business.? Sounds a best practice we?d all like to emulate.

Maryland US Senate candidate nabs Palin, DeMint endorsements

Maryland U.S. Senate candidate Dan Bongino picked up two high-profile conservative endorsements Monday: former GOP vice presidential nominee Sarah Palin and South Carolina Sen. Jim DeMint.

Bongino, a former New York City police officer and Secret Service agent, won the Republican primary in April and is running against Democratic Sen. Ben Cardin. Both Palin and DeMint?s Senate Conservatives Fund announced their support Monday morning.

?They have a history of taking a chance with outsiders who stand on principles. We?ve always known in this state that we?ve had a shot,? Bongino told The Daily Caller. ?Ben Cardin is an unpopular statewide politician with name recognition that?s not commensurate with the 45-year-plus career in politics. I think the governor knew that and Sen. DeMint?s PAC saw that, and we are really honored to have their support.?

?I think it?s a game-changer for us,? he said.

Bongino said name recognition has been the biggest challenge for his campaign, but predicted that Palin and DeMint will help get the word out about an alternative to Cardin, whom National Journal?rated the 10th most liberal senator in 2011.

?There isn?t a candidate in the country who has more passion for conservative principles than Dan Bongino,? wrote Matt Hoskins, executive director of the Senate Conservatives Fund, in a fundraising email. ?He?s fearless when it comes to articulating how liberal policies have destroyed inner cities, and he?s unwavering is his support for the principles of freedom that make this country the best the world has ever known.?

The Fund has backed Republican challengers including Ted Cruz in Texas and Richard Mourdock in Indiana.

?In supporting Dan Bongino, we are offering Maryland voters a clear choice either to continue with the failed policies and crony capitalism of the permanent political class, or to shake things up with Dan Bongino and cast a vote that helps put our country back on the path to prosperity,? Palin said in a statement Monday.

Both Palin and DeMint acknowledged the tough fight Bongino faces in running against an incumbent in traditionally Democratic Maryland. Cardin was a speaker of the state House of Delegates who served in the U.S. House of Representatives for 20 years before winning his Senate seat in 2006.

?Though political pundits often dismiss conservative candidates running in deep blue states, I don?t believe in ignoring good candidates simply because they?re fighting uphill battles against the odds,? Palin wrote. ?In fact, I find such candidates incredibly brave and especially worthy of encouragement.?

Bongino said that he has rejected thoughts of running in a more traditionally Republican state because ?the real fight is here.?

?The folks in Maryland deserve a diversity of political thought.?

He added that Maryland?s high taxes are hurting the state?s job growth and driving residents to Virginia and other?nearby states.

?We have I-95 running right through the state. We have proximity to Washington, D.C. We have Baltimore, we have Annapolis, two great cities. We have the mountains, we have the [Chesapeake] Bay, tourists locations, an educated workforce,? he said.

?How Maryland is losing jobs is an absolute absurdity, reflective of a one-party monopoly that is not at all accountable to the people of Maryland anymore.?

How To Structure A Marketplace

Screen Shot 2012-08-19 at 11.31.40 AMEditor's Note: The following is a guest post by Simon Rothman of Greylock Partners. Rothman is particularly passionate about Marketplace technology (Etsy, Kickstarter, Airbnb, etc) and how to garner success in that category. Marketplaces are endemic to the consumer web: Largely popularized by eBay, we've recently seen quite a few variations on the theme, like young guns Etsy, oDesk, Airbnb, and Kickstarter. Old or new, the two elements that bind all marketplaces are network effects (a good thing) and the chicken-and-egg problem (not such a good thing).

Interior Secretary Ken Salazar lauds increase in hunters, anglers ...

August 19, 2012 at 1:31 PM by AHN ? ?

Fitzgerald Cecilio ? 4E Sports Reporter

Milwaukee, WI, United States (4E Sports) ? IU.S. nterior Secretary Ken Salazar has noted the significant increase in hunters and anglers over the past five years, emphasizing that getting outdoors fuels the country?s economy and boosts heritage conservation.

?Seeing more people fishing, hunting, and getting outdoors is great news for America?s economy and conservation heritage,? said Salazar as he announced the results of the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service?s 2011 National Survey of Fishing, Hunting, and Wildlife-Associated Recreation.

?Outdoor recreation and tourism are huge economic engines for local communities and the country, so it is vital that we continue to support policies and investments that help Americans get outside, learn to fish, or go hunting,? he added.

The survey found that hunters nationwide increased by nine percent while anglers grew by 11 percent. Nearly 38 percent of all Americans participated in wildlife-related recreation in 2011, an increase of 2.6 million participants from the previous survey in 2006.

Outdoor participation also resulted in the spending of $145 billion on related gear, trips and other purchases, such as licenses, tags and land leasing and ownership, representing one percent of the nation?s gross domestic product.

The Fish and Wildlife Service has been conducting the national survey every five years since 1955. It is considered one of the nation?s most important wildlife-related recreation databases and the definitive source of information concerning participation and purchases associated with hunting, fishing and other forms of wildlife-related recreation nationwide.

?The Fish and Wildlife Service is dedicated to connecting people and families with nature,? said Fish and Wildlife Service Director Dan Ashe. ?We look forward to continuing to work with the States, non-governmental organizations, and additional partners to help keep recreational fishing, hunting, and wildlife watching going strong for people across America?s great outdoors.?

The survey also gathered that last year, 13.7 million people, six percent of the U.S. population 16 years old and older, went hunting. They spent $34 billion on trips, equipment, licenses, and other items in 2011, an average of $2,484 per hunter.

Also, more than 33 million people 16 and older fished in 2011, spending $41.8 billion on trips, equipment, licenses, and other items, an average of $1,262 per angler while more than 71 million people engaged in wildlife watching in 2011, spending $55.0 billion on their activities.

?State agencies, hunters and anglers are the key funders of fish and wildlife conservation through their license and gear purchases,? said Dr. Jonathan Gassett, Commissioner of the Kentucky Fish and Wildlife Resources Commission and President of the Association of Fish and Wildlife Agencies.

?An increase in participation and expenditure rates means that agencies can continue to restore and improve habitat and fish and wildlife species, bring more youth into the outdoors and provide even greater access to recreational activities,? he added.
