Wallee iPad 3 Case and Hand Strap

By Eugene Kim

The Wallee iPad 3 Case ($39.95 AUD/$42 USD approx.) ?is the foundational piece for a modular system of accessories designed for the New Apple iPad?. Wallee is based out of Australia, but offers free global shipping, and serves up a number of useful add-on accessories that work seamlessly with the Wallee iPad case. We tested the Wallee case with the optional Hand Strap ($19.95 AUD/approx.?$21?USD). The case itself is a little pricey for a plastic shell, and the cost of accessories can quickly add up, but if you want an easy-to-use universal system for mounting and using your iPad in a variety of ways, the Wallee system is a nice, clean solution.

Wallee Hand Strap

The Wallee case is a thin and light piece of rubberized plastic, which snaps easily onto the edges of the New iPad. There are appropriate cutouts for all ports and buttons, with a signature Wallee cross in the center of the back panel, exposing the Apple icon. The case is flush with the iPad at the edges, but slightly raised towards the center, under the cross, to accommodate various Wallee accessories. The Hand Strap features a simple felt velcro strap attached to a solid metal base with a plastic cross on the bottom. To attach accessories, simply line up the crosses, press them together, and twist into place.?

It lets you easily hold the iPad without fear of dropping it and reduces hand strain from holding the iPad with just one hand. It's a similar concept to the Octa Vacuum Dock + WhaleTail?and the Speck Handyshell?case.

The real beauty of the Wallee system is its vast array of easily swappable accessories and mounts. There are simple wall mount discs (approx.?$10.50 USD each), a high-end desk or table stand called the Pivot (approx.?$63 USD), a VESA adapter (approx. $16), and even car headrest mounts (approx?$42 USD). Swapping between accessories is as easy as a simple twist and pull. When you're not using an add on, the Wallee case is thin, light, and hardly noticeable, but it also only provides minimal protection for the back of your iPad and none for the glass screen. I should note that with the Hand Strap, the iPad didn't feel completely secure, and spinning it to use in a different orientation occasionally caused the strap to pop off. For the mounts and stands, however, this should not be a problem.

Rather than buying separate cases, stands, mounts, and other accessories, each requiring removal when you want to swap, the Wallee system allows for hassle free accessory transitions. The company also makes a case for the Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1?, which uses the same add-ons. All told, the system is easy to use, and worth a look if you want a unified set of accessories for your iPad.?

Union head Michael Weiner treated for brain tumor

NEW YORK (AP) ? Baseball players' union head Michael Weiner is undergoing treatment for a brain tumor.

The union said Tuesday that he began treatment a day earlier. The union said treatments are expected last about one month and it anticipates he will continue to work from its New York office on a daily basis.

Weiner, 50, succeeded Donald Fehr in December 2009 to become just the fourth head of the union since 1966.

Following his graduation from Williams College and Harvard Law School, Weiner clerked for a federal judge and was hired by Fehr in 1988 as a staff lawyer.

Under Weiner's watch, the union signed an agreement in November for a five-year contract running until December 2016, which ensures 21 consecutive years of labor peace in Major League Baseball. The agreement allowed for blood testing for human growth hormone, introduced restraints on bonuses for amateur draft picks and international signings and restored salary arbitration eligibility for part of a class of players that lost it in the 1980s.

The union also succeeded in a grievance overturning a positive drug test against NL MVP Ryan Braun, who avoided a 50-game suspension.

Italy's instability deepened by "pigsty" law

ROME (Reuters) - So bad it is universally known as the "pigsty", Italy's electoral law is at the centre of political instability that is stoking fears the euro zone's third-largest economy could topple into a Greek-style debt crisis.

Market jitters over whether Italy is heading for a default that would probably destroy the euro have been aggravated by uncertainty over what will happen when respected technocrat Prime Minister Mario Monti steps down for elections next spring.

Those worries are compounded by confusion over what electoral system will be used, with time running out for politicians to keep years of promises to replace the law.

The remarkably resilient "porcellum" or pigsty law was passed in 2005. It robs the electorate of the power to choose candidates directly, voting instead for a fixed list selected by party leaders under a proportional system.

This enables the leaders to select compliant party hacks or favorites, including in the case of Silvio Berlusconi a former starlet who became a minister in his last government.

The law also awards a large premium to the winning party or coalition, guaranteeing a strong majority in parliament.

Even the man who introduced the law, the separatist Northern League's Roberto Calderoli, called it "crap" soon afterwards.

Giovanni Sartori, one of Italy's most respected political scientists and the man who gave the law its nickname, told Reuters: "This electoral system is a horror and shameful."

He said it "does the one thing that proportional representation should not do, which is to transform a minority of votes into a majority of seats."

Two attempts to repeal it by referendum have failed, the latest early this year when Italy's highest court ruled out a plebiscite on technical legal grounds despite a petition signed by 1.2 million people.

DISGUST

But while everybody says they want to change the law, the politicians disagree on what to replace it with, and there has been renewed argument over the issue recently within the broad alliance sustaining Monti in parliament.

The issue exposes the remarkable rift between words and deeds among Italy's politicians. A 600-word article by Marco Travaglio in the magazine L'Espresso last week consisted almost entirely of a list of unfulfilled promises of imminent action.

Failure to agree a new law has also pretty much ended speculation about an early election in November.

Berlusconi's People of Freedom (PDL) party is reluctant to go to a vote while its poll ratings are at disastrous lows and its former ally the Northern League is in disarray over a corruption scandal.

In current circumstances it would be the centre-left Democratic Party that would take the majority premium because it tops opinion polls, although it would be unlikely to control the upper house or Senate which has a different electoral system, guaranteeing more instability.

President Giorgio Napolitano has become more and more impatient at failure to change the law, earlier this month making his eighth demand in a year for action.

"I remain concerned to see that an end is no nearer to discussions on a new electoral law," he said on August 10, vowing to closely follow "a process that must lead to the implementation of a mandatory undertaking not to return to the polls with the 2005 law."

Uncertainty over a new law has added to another element of instability: the failure of the political parties to decide how they will present themselves to the electorate in a poll that is only months away.

"It is crucial because you cannot plan your campaign strategy until you know what you are aiming at," said James Walston, politics professor at the American University in Rome.

Monti's sober and determined drive for vital economic reforms has sapped his popularity as harsh austerity bites, but he is still more popular than conventional politicians.

It is often said he has done more to attack runaway debt and chronic lack of growth since being appointed to replace Berlusconi last November than the country's politicians did in 15 years.

This has exposed the latter to a dangerous attack from the populist Five Star Movement of comedian Beppe Grillo, which is vying with Berlusconi's PDL for second place in a vote.

The polling organization SWG said the parties' loss of credibility had made it an "absolute necessity for them to increase their respect among the population."

Nevertheless, the politicians have still not found ways to reinvent themselves or to decide on potential coalitions to put before the voters, some apparently hanging on the idea of a return by Monti although he has repeatedly ruled this out.

PARTIES PARALYSED

Sartori said the parties were paralyzed because the intentions of voters were so unclear. Polls show up to 40 percent undecided, with a risk for mainstream politicians that they could back Grillo or fringe parties.

"The present day parties have no notion of the distribution of the electorate. This explains all the bickering. They are waiting for better information to see what kind of an alliance would benefit them and so on," he said.

"They are shooting around in the dark."

The inertia is compounded because with an election so close, parties are only interested in a law which benefits them directly and disadvantages the others.

All this confirms Italy's bad record for devising electoral systems to overcome its notorious political instability.

The porcellum replaced a previous law that awarded three quarters of seats to candidates who won majorities in individual districts, an attempt to overcome the multiple "revolving door" governments of Italy's so-called First Republic from the end of World War II until 1992.

But that system produced more fragmentation rather than less, Sartori says, because majority systems only provide stability in countries like Britain with an established two or three party set-up - the opposite of Italy.

So the politicians continue to argue as the clock ticks towards an election, with a return to some kind of pure proportional system, with all its disadvantages, the most likely outcome. Unless they choose to stay in the pigsty.

US seizes websites linked to pirated phone apps

US authorities have seized three website domain names involved in distribution of pirated Android phone apps, in the first such action involving mobile app marketplaces.

The Justice Department announced late Tuesday that they acted under a court order in coordination with international law enforcement, including Dutch and French officials, against applanet.net, appbucket.net and snappzmarket.com.

Visitors to the sites will now find a seizure banner that notifies them that the domain name has been seized by federal authorities.

"Cracking down on piracy of copyrighted works -- including popular apps -- is a top priority of the (Justice Department) criminal division," said Assistant Attorney General Lanny Breuer.

"Software apps have become an increasingly essential part of our nation's economy and creative culture, and the criminal division is committed to working with our law enforcement partners to protect the creators of these apps and other forms of intellectual property from those who seek to steal it."

During an investigation, FBI agents downloaded thousands of copies of popular copyrighted mobile device apps from the alternative online markets suspected of distributing apps without permission from the software developers who would otherwise obtain commissions.

In most cases, the servers storing the apps were being hosted in other countries, and the FBI was able to get help from international law enforcement in obtaining or seizing evidence stored on these servers.

Nine search warrants were also executed in various parts of the United States as part of an effort by the US Task Force on Intellectual Property.

Burner (for iPhone)

By Sara Yin

Cops, drug dealers, or people in my category?diehard fans of the hit TV show The Wire?will be familiar with the term "burner." Burners are cheap, prepaid phones often used to arrange drug sales and similar crimes, and are then "burned" or disposed of immediately to avoid police wiretaps and tracers.

Similarly, the Burner iPhone app, starting at $1.99 for one phone number, assigns a disposable phone numbers that you can instantly trash when you're done. It still runs calls and texts over your existing mobile network, so Burner won't actually help you hide from law enforcement, but it will mask your real number from your average creeper in places like Craigslist and online dating sites.

How Does Burner Work?
Burner buys phone numbers from Twilio, a startup that makes an API for voice communications. All Burner does is bridge your existing number and cell phone service to the assigned number. I asked CEO Greg Cohn of Ad Hoc Labs, which made the app, how quickly numbers get recycled, and he said the company is still in the process of figuring that out. At press time, about week after the app was released, Burner hadn't recycled any numbers yet.?

The calls and texts from your burner number still run over your own, unencrypted mobile network. Privacy-conscious folks would do better to turn to encrypted texting and calling apps like TrustCall and Gliph (neither of which have been reviewed by PCMag).?

As you can imagine, the possible uses for an anonymous number are endless. Burner's PR pitch includes innocent use-cases like going on online dating sites, Craigslist, job searches, Meetups, and social networking shoutouts. The less innocent can think of plenty more uses, but be aware that Burner's Terms of Agreement clearly state that you can't use the app to call 911 or for any illegal activities.

Let's Burn Something
Burner is incredibly easy to use. I set up my first burner by entering my real number into the app, then a confirmation code that was texted to me, and tapping a button. Burner let me customize my area code and then immediately generated a number, which I labeled "Craigslist."

Numbers are bought and extended with credits. A single burner costs three credits, or $1.99, and gives you 20 minutes of talk time to use over seven days. You can extend this number or add minutes by purchasing additional credits, with a tiered pricing model. At the moment, there's no limit to the number of Burner numbers you can have at a time (Cohn said some users have eight). Your Burner numbers are all stored in list form on your main screen, with a label, the number, and expiration date. It'd be helpful to receive some sort of reminder when your Burner number is about to expire so you can add credit as needed.

Missing Elements in Received Voice/Text
Once you have your Burner number, you can start texting and calling from within the app. It works smoothly. Your recipient will only see that it's from your Burner number, and performance is as good as dialing or texting with your actual number.

Receiving texts and calls is a different story. Caller ID never worked?I only saw my own Burner number as the originating number. I tried calling the number from several different lines and got the same result.

For received text messages I never received a notification, even though all texting notifications were turned on. The only way I knew I'd received a text sent to my Burner number was by entering the app itself.

Burner (for iPhone) is an innovative app that lets you buy disposable phone numbers, from which you can place calls and send SMSs through your own cell phone network. Tap a button to dispose, or burn, the number, immediately. It's a novel idea, and the closest thing I've seen to this is actually buying a prepaid cell phone and tossing it when you're done with the number. However, the app lacks a couple key features for those on the receiving end.?

WACO, Texas (Aug. 21, 2012) Baylor University scientists are developing a soils database that will help geologists and soil scientists to more quickly and accurately analyze data from fossilized soils to determine and reconstruct ancient climates.

"Research in ancient climates recorded in the geologic past provides us with our only means of testing climate models for the future, particularly the anticipated climate change that would be brought about by increased anthropogenic emissions of greenhouse gases such as carbon dioxide and methane," reported Steven Driese, Ph.D., professor and chair of the geology department at Baylor University's College of Arts & Sciences.

Geologists and soil scientists face a data overload problem due to numerous global and continental-based soil geochemical databases becoming more widely available, according to Driese.

"The overwhelming nature of available data makes ancient climate construction difficult and time consuming," he said. "Accurate and easily accessible data can help build more reliable models."

Driese reported on the new database, currently still in the development phase, at the recent meeting of the International Goldschmidt Conference on Geochemistry in Montreal.

Called the Baylor University Paleosol Informatics Cloud (BU-PIC), it combines soil, climate, topography, and vegetation data from the U.S Department of Agriculture (USDA), the PRISM (Parameter-elevation Regressions on Independent Slopes Model) Climate Group, the National Land Cover Database (NLCD) and peer reviewed journals.

The database is fully searchable and can be queried using various whole-soil and geochemical parameters to predict specific ancient climate conditions.

Post-doctoral student Gary Stinchcomb, Ph.D., working with Driese and Lee Nordt, Ph.D., professor and dean of the College of Arts and Sciences, will present further improvements and a test of the database at the Annual Meeting of the Geological Society of America in Charlotte, N.C. in November 2012.
