NBC gets no Romney campaign help on Mormon special

(AP) ? NBC News unsuccessfully went back to Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney to request an interview for this week's prime-time special on the Mormon faith after he began to seem more open to talking about it.

The single-topic "Rock Center" episode will air Thursday as originally planned, said the show's executive producer, Rome Hartman.

Romney, a former Massachusetts governor, will be the first Mormon presidential nominee of a major political party, and his campaign has generally resisted talking about his faith. But Romney last weekend invited reporters to Mormon chapel services with his family, and a new campaign ad touted him as a defender of religious freedom.

NBC requested a Romney interview weeks ago but was denied. With the new developments, the network made another request Monday but was turned down again.

The newsmagazine's producers thought it worthwhile to examine the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints on the eve of one of its members becoming the Republican nominee for president. During the hour, correspondent Harry Smith does a piece on why Mormons are so successful in business and tours a Salt Lake City warehouse where a huge amount of supplies is kept for the needy.

Kate Snow profiles a gay person, a feminist and an interracial couple on their experiences within the church, and NBC finds a Mormon cast member of the Broadway show "The Book of Mormon."

"What we set out to do very broadly is not an hour on Mitt Romney but an hour about the religion that has played a very important role in shaping who he is," Hartman said Wednesday.

Mediation In Lieu of Foreclosure | Rusty Law, LLC

Foreclosure Mediations are often a waste of time?except when they are not.

Many Foreclosure Mediations have ended in a HAMP (Home Affordable Mortgage Program) modification, which the homeowner is entitled to anyway without the time and expense of mediation.? While Foreclosure Mediations are no longer mandated in Florida, homeowner distress?mental and in real estate?continues to thrive in mediations and other legal procedures.

In many cases there are no good answers, but when your home and financial future are at stake, it may be worth looking at your legal options.? And every now and then a resolution stands out that is better than the rest.? Every now and then, instead of a HAMP modification, a Foreclosure Mediation results in a Deed-In-Lieu of Foreclosure.

A Deed-In-Lieu of Foreclosure (DIL) is defined in layman?s terms by the Florida Bar as ?a cancellation of your mortgage if you voluntarily transfer title of your property to your mortgage company.? Usually you must try to sell your home for its fair market value for at least 90 days before a mortgage company will consider this option.?? ??However, once the process is begun, generally it has to be completed within 90 days of initiation.? While a DIL can do less damage to your credit than a foreclosure, it is typically not an option if you have other liens on the property like a tax lien or second mortgage.

If you are going to lose your home and your credit, you probably cannot lose much more by talking with an attorney about the legal choices available to you.? Some cases turn out better than expected.

Turkish soldiers kill 16 PKK militants after convoy attack

DIYARBAKIR, Turkey (Reuters) - Turkish troops have killed 16 Kurdish guerrillas in an operation in south-east Turkey targeting militants who launched a bomb attack on a military convoy that killed five soldiers, the local governor's office said on Thursday.

The clashes are part of a growing cycle of violence in the remote, mountainous province of Hakkari bordering Iraq and Iran - a development which Turkish officials and analysts are linking to the deepening conflict in Syria.

The army sent in troop reinforcements and helicopter gunships after Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK) rebels detonated remote-controlled bombs in the convoy attack in Hakkari's Semdinli district on Wednesday.

Five soldiers were killed and seven wounded in that attack, the Hakkari governor's office said in a statement. It said operations against the militants were continuing.

More than 40,000 people have been killed in the conflict between the PKK and Turkish forces since the militants launched their insurgency 28 years ago with the aim of carving out a separate state in mainly Kurdish south-east Turkey.

The conflict is focused in the mountainous region bordering Iraq and Iran, but the PKK has also carried out attacks in Turkish cities. Officials blamed it for a car bombing on Monday which killed nine people in the city of Gaziantep, near Turkey's south-eastern border with Syria.

The PKK, listed as a terrorist organization by Turkey, the United States and the European Union, has denied involvement in that attack.

Prime Minister Tayyip Erdogan has accused Syrian President Bashar al-Assad of backing PKK fighters and has warned of military intervention in Syria if the group uses Syrian territory to threaten Turkey.

Compact Chevrolet Trax crossover to be unveiled in Paris ...

(August 22, 2012) It is fair to say that Chevrolet knows a little about SUVs, having invented the class over 75 years ago with the introduction of the Suburban Carryall in 1935. The all-new Chevrolet Trax will celebrate its world premiere at the Paris motor show on Sept. 27, representing Chevrolet?s first entry to the fast growing small SUV segment.

Trax will round out Chevrolet?s offer of stylish SUVs alongside Captiva.

Chevrolet will introduce the compact crossover to 140 countries, but not in the U.S. Even Mexico and Canada will get the new five-passenger hauler, the first markets to get the Trax later this year.

"For many decades, Chevrolet has been known for its dependable and capable SUVs. Trax will deliver on all of the traditional Chevrolet values and more. It is a modern, highly versatile yet fuel-efficient small SUV, offering car-like handling and all-wheel drive," said Susan Docherty, president and managing director of Chevrolet Europe. "Trax is the modern expression of one of Chevrolet?s core competencies, which is building and selling great SUVs," Docherty said.

Chevrolet?s new small SUV sports powerful body lines that convey agility and movement. With the golden bowtie separating the upper from the lower part of its prominent front grille, Trax can immediately be identified as a member of the Chevrolet family.

Chevrolet says the Trax has sufficient space to accommodate five people in a comfortable high seating position. It will deliver car-like handling while also enabling off-road capability when needed.

The European engine line-up will include a 1.4-liter turbocharged gas? engine, a 1.6-liter gas engine as well as a 1.7-liter turbo-diesel. The 1.4-liter is mated to a six-speed manual transmission, cranks out 140 horsepower. The AWD system is available on variants that come with the 1.4-liter turbo or the 1.7-liter diesel engine.

The diesel engine will deliver a power output of 130 horsepower and a maximum 210 pound-feet of torque.

In addition to a 60/40 split rear seat, Trax boasts a front passenger seat which can be folded flat, offering additional flexibility in the segment. A total of eight seating combinations can be selected.

Upper trims will be equipped with Chevrolet MyLink as standard. Chevrolet MyLink is an infotainment system that aggregates content from smartphones onto a seven-inch, high resolution, full color touch-screen display. As of this winter, MyLink will feature a navigation app which can be downloaded onto compatible smartphones. It will project the route calculated by the smartphone onto the system?s touch-screen.

The nation's weather

Weather Underground Forecast for Thursday, August 23, 2012.

The Desert Southwest will see more active weather, while storms move through the Upper Midwest and Great Lakes on Thursday. A trough of low pressure moving through the Northern Plains will continue pushing a cold front through the North-Central US. This will trigger showers and thunderstorms as it continues moving southeastward over the Upper Midwest into the Great Lakes, stretching into the Central and Southern Plains. Some of these storms may turn severe with strong winds and large hail. Expect fire danger to remain high across the Central Plains due to increased lightning probability and prevailing dry conditions.

In the East, a ridge of high pressure remains the dominant weather feature, maintaining warm, dry, and sunny conditions from the Mississippi River Valley through the East Coast. However, the tail end of a stationary front will linger over the Gulf Coast, bringing a few more showers and thunderstorms to parts of Florida.

Out West, monsoonal moisture shifts eastward and covers the Four Corners region. This will allow for storms over the Sierra Nevadas to taper off, but persist from Arizona, Utah, Colorado, and New Mexico. Expect fire danger to remain high in these areas as dry surface conditions will allow for most precipitation to evaporate before reaching the ground. Thus, if lightning strikes ground and creates a fire, rapid fire spread will occur. Temperatures in the Lower 48 states Wednesday have ranged from a morning low of 36 degrees at Meacham, Ore. to a high of 98 degrees at Needles, Calif.

The Problem With AT&T Blocking FaceTime Over 3G - Business ...

In a followup to last week's announcement that it won't let iPhone owners use FaceTime over a 3G/4G cellular connection without signing up for a shared data plan first, AT&T responded to complaints this morning that the move may violate FCC net neutrality rules.

AT&T says it's not breaking FCC rules because FaceTime comes preinstalled on iPhones. The company claims the FCC rule in question only applies to apps you download to your device. (There are several third-party apps for iPhone such as Skype and ooVoo that let you video chat using a cellular data connection).

I'm not going to pretend to be an expert in net neutrality and FCC rules. I'm sure AT&T is smart enough not to break the law. (I know many of you who are a lot smarter than me may disagree, so feel free to explain why in the comments below).

The problem is AT&T is restricting a hot feature on the most popular phone on the planet in a move that seems designed to push people towards the more expensive shared data plans that go into effect starting this month.

Since AT&T killed off its unlimited data plan more than a year ago, you can only buy tiered plans where you get a certain amount of data usage per month. If you go over, AT&T slaps you with a charge for an additional GB of data for the month. And that's fine! I understand bandwidth can be limited, and it makes sense to charge people to use it.

What doesn't make sense is telling customers?how they can use the data they bought.?

For a lot of people, it's going to be more expensive to switch to a mobile share plan from the normal individual tiered plans. That's because AT&T structures its shared plans so you can buy a block of data to use each month and split the usage among all your devices. It's not a good deal if you're not a heavy data user or just have one smartphone on your plan.

Now are the mobile share plans more expensive for?everyone? No. If you have a lot of smartphones, hotspots, and tablets that use AT&T's data connection, then it probably makes financial sense for you to get on board.?

But that doesn't apply to a lot of AT&T customers. For individuals, you're forced to either live without Apple's FaceTime over cellular or pay more for the privilege to use it.

Simply put, this a dumb, sneaky move by AT&T, especially since its competitor?Sprint won't limit how customers use FaceTime over cellular. Verizon hasn't come out with a statement on the issue, but based on the way it structures its data plans now, you shouldn't have a problem using FaceTime over cellular. Even more embarrassing for AT&T:?T-Mobile announced this morning that it's going to offer customers unlimited 4G data plans. No slowdowns. No data caps. Just unlimited data usage like we enjoyed in the good old days.

It's a dangerous, slippery slope to limit smartphone features on a device just because a customer doesn't sign up for the most expensive data plan. If you buy data, it should be your data to use as you want.

Unfortunately for AT&T customers, that's not your carrier's policy.

Akin still defiant, but leaves door open to quitting Senate race

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Republican Representative Todd Akin left open the possibility that he might drop out of the Missouri Senate race, but remained defiant against "party bosses" who want him to quit after controversial comments on rape and abortion.

"I'm never going to say everything that could possibly happen. I don't know the future," Akin said on ABC's "Good Morning America," opening the door to a possible exit from the race.

Akin apologized again in multiple television interviews on Wednesday for his earlier comments, but said he intended to remain in the race to be able to promote his staunch anti-abortion beliefs and to respect the wishes of Missouri voters.

"The people of Missouri chose me, and I don't believe it's right for party bosses to decide to override those voters," Akin said. "It makes me uncomfortable to think that the party bosses are going to dictate who runs, as opposed to the election process."

Republican Party leaders, including presidential candidate Mitt Romney, have been calling for Akin to leave the Senate race against Democrat Claire McCaskill over his remarks that victims of "legitimate rape" can naturally avoid pregnancy.

The backlash over Akin's comments has dominated campaigning for the November 6 election, energizing Democrats and testing Romney's control over his party a week before the national convention to formally nominate him for the presidency - the biggest event in his political career.

To the chagrin of many Republicans, the controversy has set off a firestorm over abortion and other social issues that distracts from the jobs-oriented economic message Romney and his vice presidential running mate, Representative Paul Ryan, want to send to relatively moderate independent voters.

Ryan distanced himself from Akin in an interview with KDKA radio in Pittsburgh on Wednesday, calling Akin's comment that "legitimate rape" would not result in pregnancy "outrageous."

ECHOING OBAMA

"Rape is rape," Ryan said, echoing Democratic President Barack Obama's comment on the issue during an impromptu White House news conference on Monday.

Ryan and Akin had co-sponsored anti-abortion legislation in Congress that included a call for a classification of some rapes as "forcible."

Romney's campaign said this week that a Romney-Ryan administration would back rape exceptions to anti-abortion laws, which Ryan has not.

The vice presidential candidate declined specific comment in the interview on Wednesday when asked if he had changed his position. He said he was "proud of my pro-life record ... but Mitt Romney is at the top of the ticket."

Republicans fear the Akin episode could prevent them from winning in Missouri, lessening their chances of picking up the net four seats they need ensure winning a majority in the 100-member Senate.

McCaskill had been trailing Akin by up to 10 percentage points in recent polls, but the race had become a dead heat in snap polling as the news of Akin's remarks came out.

She has been stressing the controversy in fundraising emails, charging Akin with pursuing an "anti-women agenda," including votes against laws mandating equal pay for women and backing legislation that would outlaw abortion and many forms of birth control.

Akin chose to defy the party on Tuesday rather than bow to pressure to resign before an evening deadline. He has bought advertising and continued to fundraise, blaming the "liberal elite" for pushing for his departure from the race.

Akin's next deadline to take his name off the ballot is September 25.

On Wednesday, a fundraising website bannered "Help Todd Fight Back Against the Liberal Elite," said he had raised $14,954 out of a $15,000 goal.

But the Republican Party's Senate committee and American Crossroads, an outside fundraising group, said they were withholding millions of dollars they had planned to spend on the Missouri race as long as Akin did not step aside.

On NBC's "Today" program, Akin said he was not staying in the race for personal gain. "It's about trying to do the right thing and stand on principle," he said.

"This is not about me. This is not about my ego. But it is about the voters of the state of Missouri. They have chose me because of principles I stand on ... I believe they stand with me on a whole host of issues."
