JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. (AP) ? A "bellwether," quite literally, is a male sheep wearing a bell that leads the flock ? or at least allows a farmer to find his sheep, because the clanging ram is never too far from the rest of the group.
For most of a century, Missouri has been the nation's bellwether. Every four years, a majority of voters in the state in the center of the country ? a near perfect mirror of its demographics, geography, economics and politics ? predictably cast their ballots for the candidates the nation as a whole chooses to win the White House.
That changed in 2008, when Missouri voters went for Republican John McCain by a razor thin margin over Democrat Barack Obama. It was just the second time in a century that Missouri didn't side with the winning presidential candidate.
Should Republican Rep. Todd Akin ? who offended millions of Americans with insensitive remarks about rape and pregnancy ? rebound this November to defeat Democratic Sen. Claire McCaskill, Missouri will probably need to turn in its bell for good.
Obama has more or less conceded the state to presumptive Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney. Should Akin manage to beat McCaskill without the support of Romney or other top Republicans, including all five living current or former GOP senators from the state, voters will solidify that an already red-leaning Missouri has truly become a rock-ribbed Republican stronghold.
"There is too much at stake here in this election," Akin implored in an online fundraising plea sent heading into the weekend. "Today, let's show Claire once and for all that Missouri is going Republican Red this November."
To be sure, Missouri has been trending Republican for several years. The state Legislature, which swung to the GOP a decade ago, now has one of its largest Republican majorities in state history. And in 2010, Missourians ousted Democratic Rep. Ike Skelton from a seat he held for 34 years in favor of a Republican who had been the spokeswoman for a successful ballot campaign to engrave a gay-marriage ban in the state constitution.
Obama has made no campaign appearances and run no TV ads in the state. Yet political scientists have been reluctant to lump Missouri in the same reliably Republican category as neighboring Kansas or many of its new peers in the Southeastern Conference, where the University of Missouri now plays its sports.
"It's pretty obvious that it's trended a little bit red," said Dave Robertson, a political science professor at the University of Missouri-St. Louis. "An Akin victory in November would be a very, very strong indicator that this state is comfortably red."
Missouri has a long history of divided loyalties ? its residents fought for both the Union and Confederate armies during the Civil War. That division has historically made Missouri a microcosm of the nation.
Geographically, Missouri has large cities on its east and west "coasts," with a rapidly growing population in the south and a largely rural, agricultural base in the center ? just like U.S.
Demographically, the racial composition of Missouri's residents, their average age, marital status and educational background all have historically been fairly close to national norms. And although the median household income has slightly trailed the nation, so has Missouri's cost of living ? making its poverty rate on par with that of the rest of the country.
That has begun to change. Most notably, the 2010 census revealed that Missouri's racial mix no longer is roughly the same as the national average. More of its residents are white (83 percent compared with 72 percent nationally) and significantly fewer Missourians are Hispanic (3.5 percent compared with more than 16 percent nationally). A far greater percentage of Missouri households speak English only than do nationally, which perhaps explains why state voters adopted a 2008 constitutional amendment making English the official language for government proceedings by an overwhelming 86 percent.
Democrats still can win statewide elections in Missouri, but they typically do so by positioning themselves in the political center. Democratic Gov. Jay Nixon, for example, has campaigned on a Republican-like theme highlighting his tax cuts and spending cuts while running commercials that describe him as "independent."
McCaskill cast herself as a moderate and portrayed Akin as an extremist even before Akin's gaffe a week ago in which he told a St. Louis TV interviewer that women's bodies have ways of avoiding pregnancy in cases of "legitimate rate." Akin has since apologized and said he was wrong.
Republican Judy Loman, 68, of the rural central Missouri town of Versailles, said she believes Akin's apology is sincere although she acknowledged "mixed feelings" about whether to vote for him in November. Regardless, Loman said, she would not vote for McCaskill.
In the primary, Carolyn Hinze supported one of Akin's rivals and she didn't like Akin's recent remarks about rape. Yet the 71-year-old retired insurance agent from Joplin plans to remain a loyal Republican and vote for Akin in November.
"He's a little more conservative than I am, but I don't think he's dangerous," Hinze said.
Rick Althaus, a political science professor at Southeast Missouri State University, said that no matter the outcome of the Senate race, he's already changed the textbooks at his school. For more than a decade, the book used for the introductory course on American government included a section about Missouri politics written by Althaus that explained the state's bellwether nature. He removed that description for the 2012 edition.
Simply put: "Missouri is losing its bellwether status," Althaus said.

When you are going to buy a home, make sure you have money for the bills that come along with it. Many people do not take bills into consideration when making an offer on a home and they end up broke each month. Make a list of how much each bill is expected to cost you.
When you are considering buying a house, don?t just consider how many bedrooms and how many baths, especially if you are looking at it as an investment. Just as important, is to consider the neighborhood, the school district and the financial situation of those living around you. All of the aforementioned things, can affect the value of the home and thus, the return on your investment.
Mortgage lenders will use a housing expense-to income ratio to calculate how much of a mortgage you will be able to afford to pay for. They calculate the property tax payments, principle and interest on the loan and insurance premiums on the home and use it to determine your potential payment to see if it is affordable.
If you can, bring a veteran rehab contractor along to any of the open houses that you attend. The experienced contractor should be able to spot some of the houses defects that you might overlook. You are not as experienced as a contractor will be, so it can be very beneficial to have someone come with you.
When you are looking for homes that you would like to purchase, you should take a look around at the community that you would be living in. Make sure that there is a good mixture of both residential neighborhoods as well as commercial districts. The reason for this is that the commercial area helps provide jobs as well as income for the city that you will be living in.
When considering the size of the house you would want to get, you should keep in mind what the average buyer is looking for if you want to consider the ease of reselling it in the future. The average buyer is looking for a three or four bedroom house. So this is something you should consider, if you can afford it, since this would help get more potential buyers in your home once you are ready to sell.
One of the most important things to think about when buying a home for your family is safety for children. There are around 2.5 million injuries each year (according to the U.S. Consumer Products Safety Commission), and you don?t want your children falling into that category. Look at how many stairs the house has, the outdoor lighting, and if there is a pool outside.
When planning out how much house you can afford to buy, don?t forget to calculate in the maintenance costs of the home. Maintenance is one of the most expensive factors in owning a home, but it?s something many first time homebuyers will forget about. Once you own the home, your landlord is no longer responsible if a pipe breaks, so save money for eventualities.
By searching for the best prices one can assure that they will be making the most of their money. Homes that have been foreclosed on can be found for attractive prices although more money may needed to be invested in the home. Other homes can be bought for more but may require less money invested.
So now that you know a little bit more about the home buying process, you can use these tips and nuggets of information to be a pro buyer in no time. Real estate purchases don?t have to be scary, it?s all about what you know and having the confidence to make the right moves.
When looking for homes for sale in branson mo be sure to slow down when making your decision and hire a real estate agent you trust.

TVLINE | So, is Bill God now?
I don?t want to say if he is or he isn?t. Who?s to say what Lilith really is? He is still Bill but he is something different.
TVLINE | So there is some of the old Bill in there?
It is Bill, but it is a transformed Bill. He is not a completely new person. It?s not like his memories or his experiences have been left out and he?s just a baby.
TVLINE | Can he revert back to the old Bill?
Well, that?s the question: Is he going to be evil? What does he want? What is he going to do? Will he be able to revert back to Bill? That?s for future seasons. The implication, certainly, is that he is more ferocious.
TVLINE | As you warned me back at Comic-Con, there was a lot of death in the episode ? some more ambiguous than others. Did Luna die?
You?ll have to watch [next season]. We didn?t see her die.
TVLINE | And Russell? Is he really dead?
He?s gone. We may see him in flashbacks, but he bit it.
TVLINE | Also back at Comic-Con, you declined to tell me which couple you were having the most fun writing for this season because it would be too much of a spoiler. Can you now confirm it was Russell and Steve?
Yes. I love both of those actors and I thought they were hilarious and kind of touching.
TVLINE | Will Steve remain a viable character next season?
I don?t know. I?ve spoken to Mark briefly. They?ve only pitched some very broad ideas. I hope he does because I think he?s such a great character. I don?t know if he would be a big part of the season, but he definitely seems like that would be a person to bring back.
TVLINE | You really outdid yourself with Rosalyn?s death scene. Congratulations.
I think that is probably the most jaw-dropping [death] that we?ve done. Every time I see it I laugh.

TVLINE | The Pam/Tara kiss ? did you know at the start of the season that it was all leading up to this?
It was in our mind at the beginning of the season, yes. We wanted to really tease it out.
TVLINE | What was it about those two characters that made them relationship material in your mind?
They both were, if not full-on lesbians, than bisexual. They both were characters with real attitude. And they both hate each other ? at least they did at the beginning of the season. And that, to me, felt like it could create a lot of tension that could turn romantic towards the end.
TVLINE | Where would you personally like to see that relationship go next season?
Well, here?s the thing with relationships on True Blood: Once they happen then you have to throw a monkey-wrench into them, because to have people be happy is not that exciting.
TVLINE | But it?s your understanding that Mark is committed to that story?
All of the writers were into [them], so that is my understanding, yes.
TVLINE | Did you ever consider introducing or unmasking Warlow in the finale?
No. We didn?t want to really define Warlow until the next season.
TVLINE | So he?ll definitely figure into Season 6?
I think he?ll be kind of a big part of it.
TVLINE | Is he someone we?ve met before?
TVLINE | With Bill heading into Big Bad territory next season, does that make Eric now the hero of True Blood?
Remains to be seen. They?ve both been heroes in their own way. Eric was kind of like a mischievous cad, but I don?t think he was ever, like, a true villain the way that Russell was or the way that Maryann was. And he?s done a lot of really heroic things himself. So I never really looked at Eric as the bad guy and Bill as the good guy ? at least not since the very early seasons. But it remains to be seen what will go down with both of them.
TVLINE | A non-finale burning question ? why did you write Hoyt out?
I felt like we had told his entire story. There weren?t many places we could go with him that we hadn?t been, but I love that character and I love Jim [Parrack] so much I didn?t want to kill him. He?s always been such a good soul. I wanted to have the possibility for him to return as well. But he fell in love and he couldn?t let go.
TVLINE | Did you feel like you had to write him out so viewers could more easily accept Jessica and Jason without feeling guilty?
That was not the thought, no. I thought the way that he left and the way that he made her glamour the memories out of him was pretty devastating. Also, there are so many characters on the show to serve. It felt like Hoyt had run his course for now, so we thought let?s send him off to Alaska and then if we need to bring him back as well.
TVLINE | The finale was your swan song ? how are you feeling?
It?s bittersweet. It?s been such a big part of my life for so long; of course it?s hard to step away. But running that show is such a huge job and I?ve been doing it for five years straight. I just don?t think I have another season left in me. I need to re-charge. And then I?m interested in doing something new ? something with different characters and a different tone. As a writer, it?s fun to create. And once you get into a long-running show with very established characters and a very established tone and format, after a while it?s a really great job but that?s what it is ? a job. You?re just continuing to create the same show. I?m at the point in my life where I don?t want to work as hard. Actually, I?ve had to take a good hard look at workaholism and it?s effect on one?s mental health. [Laughs] And, also, there are things I want to do that are different. I want to try something completely different.
TVLINE | The show is in good hands with Mark?
Very good hands. And three other writers have been there since the very beginning? It?s like a having a kid go away to college.
Source. Nothing too spoiler-y imo, but you've been warned. Mods, if you could accept this later today because we've already had 3 TB posts, I'd be grateful (also oop at me forgetting the tag).

Assume, for the sake of the argument, he?s telling the truth.?Since when are charitable contributions added to income taxes when judging whether someone has paid his fair share?
More to the point, Romney admits to an income of over $20 million a year for the last several decades. Which makes his 13 percent ? or even 20 percent ? violate the principle of equal sacrifice that lies at the core of our notion of tax fairness.
Even Adam Smith, the 18th century guru of free-market conservatives, saw the wisdom of a graduated tax embodying the principle of equal sacrifice. ?The rich should contribute to the public expense,? he wrote, ?not only in proportion to their revenue, but something more in proportion.?
Equal sacrifice means that in paying taxes people ought to feel about the same degree of pain regardless of whether they?re wealthy or poor. Logically, this means someone earning $20 million a year should pay a much larger proportion of his income in taxes than someone earning $200,000, who in turn should pay a larger proportion than someone earning $50,000.
But Romney?s alleged 13 percent tax rate is lower than that of most middle class Americans who earn a tiny fraction of what he earns.
At a time when poverty is increasing, when public parks and public libraries are being closed and when public schools are shrinking their offerings and their hours, when the nation?s debt is immense, and when the 400 richest Americans have more wealth than the bottom 150 million of us put together ? Romney?s 13 percent is shameful.
