When you communicate with fellow Operational Risk colleagues in your organization, what considerations do you take with regard to the other persons communications style? ?During any vital crisis communications exchange under extreme levels of stress with a team of First Responders or JSOC, there is no time or reason to take this into consideration. ?This is because, a team of this type has trained together for months if not years in exercises that put them to the test of how to effectively communicate in multidimensional crisis scenarios. ?They know how to effectively communicate what needs to happen and when, not how. ?These crisis teams have practiced to the point where they know exactly what to do when a real incident occurs.

In the halls of corporations across the globe, the likelihood of a crisis occurring on a daily basis is high. The consequences and type of threat are unknown. ?Whether it be a key disruption in the supply chain for a vital component for manufacturing your products or the data leakage of trade secrets to your competition, the crisis scenario involves multiple inside people. ?When you engage in information exchange with your fellow OPS Risk colleagues from HR, to IT and the office of the Chief Security Officer the personalities and communications styles must be taken under consideration. ?Why?

Security Risk professionals in the global enterprise who are part of the Crisis Management Team have been selected for specific reasons. ?Maybe it is because of their title or position in the organization. ?The Vice-President of Human Resources, Chief Risk Officer, VP of Information Technology, Chief Security Officer (CSO) and even Chief Executive Officer (CEO) are tasked with the ultimate safety and security of the assets of the institution. ?They are called upon in times of crisis to be the face to the public and the heads of leadership during and throughout the time frame of the organizational incident.

In order for the leadership of security risk professionals to be more effective in the face of any incident, communications style is a significant factor. ?Deep down below the facade of a persons title and the office they command is the DNA and the personality of the individual. ?The way they process information and the way that the person expresses themselves in a crisis communications encounter is a vital factor in overall crisis strategy.

How often have you seen the spokesperson from a Fortune 500 company in front of a congressional inquiry, press conference or jury trial answering questions about their organizations or behavior? ?What kinds of evidence do we have of the impact of communications and communications style during the heat of a crisis incident? ?So we have to go back to the leadership during a crisis. ?The leadership of the crisis team is comprised of people with individual personalities. ?In the middle of a crisis, those styles of communication will become dominant and take over:

  • Amiable
  • Expressive

The organizational pulse of your organization, will be made up of a blend of these individuals and their respective communications proclivities. ?What would happen if the whole team was made up of "Drivers" or "Amiables"? ?How would the performance of the team be affected by having such a overwhelming number of people who have the same style of communication?

PSU trustees promise close look at Freeh changes

STATE COLLEGE, Pa. (AP) ? Penn State trustees on Friday promised to move forward with a detailed evaluation of changes recommended by former FBI director Louis Freeh in response to the child sex-abuse scandal that tarnished the university's reputation.

At the same time, chairwoman Karen Peetz said the board wouldn't do a detailed analysis of Freeh's scathing report, which concluded that the late football coach Joe Paterno and three other school officials concealed child molestation allegations against retired defensive coordinator Jerry Sandusky. Paterno's family and the officials have firmly denied the findings, which also have been questioned by many alumni.

"The four people spoken about most in the report, we're certainly not going to take a position on their guilt or innocence," trustee Mark Dambly later told reporters. "They'll go through their process ... We're going to allow that process to play out in the courts."

Dambly said Freeh, also a former federal judge, was hired as an independent investigator with the goal of finding out "who knew what when," as well as suggesting changes in governance and administration "so that nothing like this would happen again."

Sandusky is awaiting sentencing in jail after being convicted of 45 criminal counts in June.

University leaders faced pointed questions from the public about their handling of Freeh's report and the resulting NCAA sanctions that punished the school's venerable football program. The trustees allotted time for public comment for the first time at one of their meetings, part of what trustees have said was a concerted effort to increase transparency.

"While we are moving forward on my many fronts," Peetz said, "we accept the consequences of failure and we are remedying any wrongs."

The roughly 30-minute question and answer period showed fault lines in a Penn State community still anguished by Freeh's findings in July. The NCAA based its landmark sanctions on those findings, levying the school with a four-year bowl ban, significant scholarship cuts and a $60 million fine, among other penalties.

Each of the seven questions during the comment period related in some way to the scandal, and many dealt specifically with either the Freeh report or the sanctions. One of the commenters, Cecelia Masella, raised questions about President Rodney Erickson's discussions with the NCAA before the sanctions were handed down.

"This board wants the general public to move forward, but I'm here to tell you that this is not going to happen because the stakes are too high," Masella said. "There are many thousands of individuals who cannot heal until the truth triumphs ... I can tell you with no uncertainty we are not going away."

Masella's remarks were met by applause by attendees in the gallery, though interactions were mainly respectable.

Erickson stood steadfastly behind the account he offered trustees in an Aug. 12 teleconference, in which he said he was told that an overwhelming majority of NCAA officials "wanted blood" and the consent decree was "a take-it-or-leave-it proposition."

"Those are the facts ... I still believe that was the best course of action given what we were faced with," Erickson said. "It's a decision that no university president should ever have to make."

Responding to another question, Peetz said the board was focused on implementing the changes recommended by Freeh by the end of next year following a thorough evaluation, or to offer reasons why they would not implement changes.

The recommendations cover areas including strengthening safety and security policies; identifying and reporting misconduct; and governance. Some recommendations already have been implemented, including a new policy to limit access to athletic facilities and a restructuring of the board to strengthen governance.

But Peetz said the board did not plan a detailed review of the report itself. She said such a review would take its course in upcoming trials or other legal actions, a comment that drew a couple chuckles from the crowd.

Peetz said she understood the frustrations of the school's passionate alumni over the Freeh report and sanctions.

"I think, unfortunately, there will always be people who are skeptical about what we say or how we say it," Peetz told reporters later. "We're just telling it like it is."

Critics of the school's handling of the Freeh report have said Penn State "accepted" the findings, but Dambly said that wasn't the case.

The board said in a statement after findings were released July 12 that it "accepted full responsibility for the failures that occurred."

"There have been lots of suggestions that we accepted all 267 pages (of the report). That's not accurate at all," Dambly said. "We did not take any action on the Freeh report. It's open to anybody's interpretation."

Freeh challenged the trustees to look at the culture of the university. But, Dambly said, "we don't suggest that the entire culture of the university is flawed. None of us have ever said that. Unfortunately, it's been construed that way."

The trustees also voted to table a proposal to re-name a child care center on campus that bears the name of former school administrator Gary Schultz, one of the school officials named in Freeh's report. Schultz is awaiting trial on charges he lied to a grand jury about Sandusky and didn't properly report suspected child abuse.

Trustee Anthony Lubrano read an email sent to trustees from Schultz's lawyer asking the board to wait on taking action until after his January trial. Another trustee, Ira Lubert, said renaming the facility now could influence a trial.

Hearing Loss in Women Tied to Pain Relievers

Women who take ibuprofen or acetaminophen two or more days per week have an increased risk of hearing loss, a new study suggests.

Researchers found that themore often women took either of these pain relievers, the higher their risk for hearing loss. The link was stronger among women younger than 50 years old, and especially strong among those who took ibuprofen six or more days a week.

There was no link between taking aspirin and hearing loss, according to the study.

"Even though these pain relievers are widely available, they're still medications with side effects," said study researcher Dr. Sharon G. Curhan, an instructor in medicine at Brigham and Women's Hospital in Boston. "If you think you have a need to take these medications daily, you should discuss this with your doctor first."

However, some experts disagreed with the strength of the findings.

"Hearing tests were not performed in this study," said Dr. Ronna Hertzano, an otolaryngologist from the University of Maryland School of Medicine, who was not involved in the study. Instead, the researchers relied on study participants' answers to one question on a questionnaire, which is a less accurate measure of hearing loss and limited the validity of the study, she said.

"Hearing loss over the age of 50 is common," Hertzano said. "Some people may be bothered by it, while some aren't even aware they have it."

Hearing loss increases with age

More than 50 percent of adults suffer from high-frequency hearing loss by age 60, according to a national survey conducted by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The condition can affect people's ability to hear normal speech.

People's risk of high-frequency hearing loss increases with age, Hertzano said. "As we age, we lose the ability to hear high-pitch sounds, or it would have to be particularly loud for us to hear it."

Although men are more likely to experience hearing loss than women, one-third of women in their 50s and almost two-thirds of women in their 60s suffer from hearing loss, according to a 2008 study.

In the new study, Curhan and colleagues analyzed data gathered on more than 62,000 women who took part in theNurses' Health Study II, from 1995 to 2009. Over the study period, about 10,000 women reported they had hearing loss.

Women who said they took ibuprofen two or three days a week were 13 percent more likely to have hearing loss compared with women who took ibuprofen less than once a week.

Women who took acetaminophen two or three days a week were 11 percent more likely to report hearing loss compared with those who took the drug less than once a week.

Women who took ibuprofen or acetaminophen more than five or six days a week had 21 to 24 percent increased risk.

However, the study didn't look at the reasons these women were taking pain relievers this frequently, Hertzano said. "If someone takes acetaminophen or ibuprofen on a daily basis, there has to be some underlying problem," she said.

How pain relievers might affect hearing

Curhan said the study doesn't prove that pain relievers cause hearing loss, however, pain relievers could be one of the many factors that contribute to hearing loss.

Pain relievers could decrease blood flow to the cochlea, which is a part of the inner ear involved in hearing, Curhan said.

Experts believe genetics and constant exposure to loud noises also contribute to hearing loss. Treatments for the condition include hearing aids, and ear implants for people with severe hearing loss.

Hertzano said people should not stop taking pain relievers based on the results.

"More research is needed to determine a reliable link between [pain reliever] use and hearing loss," she said.

The study was published in the September issue of the American Journal of Epidemiology.

Monkeys Made Smarter With Prosthetic Device

An anonymous reader writes "Scientists have successfully restored and, in some cases, enhanced decision-making ability in brain-damaged monkeys on cocaine by connecting a prosthetic device to their brains. 'In the study, the scientists trained five monkeys to match multiple images on a computer screen until they were correct 70 to 75 percent of the time. First, an image appeared on the screen, which the animals were trained to select using a hand-controlled cursor. The screen then went blank for up to two minutes, followed by the reappearance of two to eight images, including the initial one, on the same screen. When the monkeys correctly chose the image they were shown first, the electronic prosthetic device recorded the pattern of neural pulses associated with their decision by employing a multi-input multi-output nonlinear (MIMO) mathematical model, developed by researchers at the University of Southern California. In the next phase of the study, a drug known to disrupt cognitive activity, cocaine, was administered to the animals to simulate brain injury. When the animals repeated the image-selection task, their decision-making ability decreased 13 percent from normal. However, during these "drug sessions," the MIMO prosthesis detected when the animals were likely to choose the wrong image and played back the previously recorded "correct" neural patterns for the task. According to the study findings, the MIMO device was exceedingly effective in restoring the cocaine-impaired decision-making ability to an improved level of 10 percent above normal, even when the drug was still present and active.'"

Go Out and Speak About Your Book | Writing and Publishing News

There are many tasks involved when you take on the responsibility of promoting your book. And if you publish a book, you most certainly have taken on the responsibility of promoting it. If you don?t accept that responsibility, your book will die. That?s the hard truth of it.

Public speaking is a major book promotion activity that many authors pursue. I?ve written a book about how to promote your book through public speaking, book festivals, signings, conferences, interviews and more. It includes being interviewed for TV, radio, podcasts and such as well. It?s all about public speaking and communication. Allworth Press will bring the book out in the fall. Of course, I?ll announce it here. You can actually see it posted at Amazon.com. It?s called, Talk Up Your Book. The book posted at Amazon has the wrong cover on it, though. I expressed my dislike for the cover and they changed it. I love the new cover. I?ll try to keep an eye on it and let you know when it is up.

In the meantime, if you have a book to promote, I?d like to suggest that you take a weekend or a few days during the week and set up some speaking engagements. I spent a recent weekend contacting writers? group leaders and writers? conference organizers and managed to set up speaking gigs in Los Angeles, Palm Springs, Orange County, Camarillo and Ventura California as well as Las Vegas, NV over the next several months. Of course, you don?t have to travel to speak. You can start locally. Here are some ideas:

? Contact the program chair for local civic groups.
? If your book is suitable, offer to present programs in schools.
? Speak to classes at a community college.
? Get a teaching gig through an adult education program.
? Arrange an author appreciation day (or week) at your public library.
? Do book signings at bookstores as well as appropriate specialty stores.
? Contact people you know who belong to groups. Ask to speak.
? Develop entertaining home parties around the theme of your book.
? If your book is conducive to book clubs, seek some out in your area.
? Create a program to take into local companies.
? Contact hotels in your community and offer to present a program for guests.
? Contact radio/TV program directors and ask to be interviewed.

There are a dozen ideas for getting speaking gigs related to the theme of your book. I?m sure you have others. Contact me and I?ll publish them here.
