Values Voter Summit: 11 Best Giveaways

Despite a speaking lineup that included GOP vice presidential nominee Rep. Paul Ryan, perhaps the most interesting thing about the annual Values Voter Summit, happening this weekend in Washington, D.C., is the panoply of socially conservative interest groups that line the small auxiliary conference hall at the Omni Shoreham hotel in Northwest Washington, D.C.

They come to promote niche agendas - no abortion, no gay marriage, religious education, family values, or to sell books - and they bring with them all manner of flair, handed out to interested parties. Aside from the run-of-the-mill click-pens and buttons, below are the 11 most distinct and (mostly) free-for-the-taking things to be had at the conference.

This year's only disappointment: a conspicuous absence of abstinence-related bookmarks, which made an appearance in 2009.

1. Liberty University sunglasses:

2. Glow-in-the-dark George Washington temporary tattoo:

3. De-fund Planned Parenthood sticker:

4. Logo golf balls for The Timothy Plan, a socially conservative mutual fund:

5. Anti-Abortion sunglasses, from Susan B. Anthony List:

6. Bumper sticker comparing politicians to diapers, from Family Research Council:

7. Liberty University Law School lip balm:

8. Americans United for Life mini-flying discs:

9. Conservative youth activism beer koozies and slap bracelets:

10. Obama Must Go T-shirt with blinking pin:

11. I Heart Christ-Mas pins:

'The Master' smashes box-office records

(AP) ? Paul Thomas Anderson's cult drama "The Master" commanded a huge following in its opening weekend, smashing records on just a handful of screens.

The Weinstein Co. release made $729,745 in five theaters in New York and Los Angeles for a record-setting per-screen average of $145,949, according to Sunday studio estimates. The hugely anticipated film, which just won several of the top awards at the Venice Film Festival and will open in more cities in upcoming weeks, stars Philip Seymour Hoffman as a charismatic cult leader and Joaquin Phoenix as his wayward protege.

The No. 1 film at the box office was "Resident Evil: Retribution," which took in an estimated $21.1 million in its debut. This is the fifth film in the Sony Screen Gems action franchise, starring Milla Jovovich.

That topped the 3-D re-release of the Disney Pixar animated favorite "Finding Nemo," which opened in second place with $17.5 million.

The 3-D "Resident Evil: Retribution" was directed by Jovovich's husband, Paul W.S. Anderson, who has made three of the five films. It features the actress once again as the warrior Alice, the last hope for the human race as an evil corporation unleashes a deadly virus that creates more flesh-eating undead on a worldwide scale. And fittingly, the film performed even better internationally, where it made a healthy $50 million.

"You have to give so much credit for that to Milla," said Rory Bruer, Sony's head of distribution. "She's such an incredible star and absolutely just works so hard in every country. Whether it's Russia or Japan, everywhere she's gone, she's worked so hard in regards to making the franchise a success."

The re-do of "Finding Nemo" follows in a recent tradition of Disney converting its classic animated movies into 3-D for a whole new audience. The 2003 underwater comedy about a tiny, lost fish named Nemo, featuring the voices of Albert Brooks, Ellen DeGeneres and Willem Dafoe, won the Academy Award for best animated feature.

Paul Dergarabedian, box-office analyst for Hollywood.com, said the No. 1-opening for the latest "Resident Evil" movie came as a bit of a surprise. He figured "Finding Nemo" would come out on top, given the track record of the Pixar brand and the strong opening a year ago of Disney's "The Lion King" in 3-D, which debuted at No. 1 with $30.1 million.

"The Screen Gems label, they know how to create a profit-making franchise," Dergarabedian said. "It's become so important if you have a star who resonates in the international marketplace ? you can have a real winner worldwide."

Last week's No. 1 movie, the Lionsgate exorcism thriller "The Possession," fell to third place with an estimated $5.8 million. It's now made about $41.2 million over the past three weeks.

Among the other new movies this weekend, "Arbitrage" opened in 12th place in limited release with nearly $2.1 million. Richard Gere stars as a hedge-fund billionaire juggling scandals that could destroy him personally and professionally.

The huge opening for "The Master" beats the per-screen-average record for a live-action feature debut set earlier this year by Wes Anderson's "Moonrise Kingdom," which made $522,996 when it opened on four screens in May for an average of $130,749.

Asked who the audience was for "The Master," Weinstein Co. president of theatrical distribution Erik Lomis said: "We didn't do exit polls but from eyeballing the ArcLight (Cinemas), everyone in Los Angeles showed up."

Part of the allure was the rare opportunity to see the film projected in lush 70mm, which was possible at four of the five locations where it was playing. Expertly paced trailers released over the past few months revealed nothing, and unannounced screenings in select cities created more buzz. And some of the film's mystique may have come from its parallels to the origins of the secretive Church of Scientology. Anderson has said the church's founder, L. Ron Hubbard, provided inspiration for Hoffman's character.

"We knew we would do a lot of business but we didn't think it would be this big," Lomis said. "We knew from not only the pop-up screenings and the guerrilla marketing PTA does but also from the Venice Film Festival and the Toronto (International) Film Festival that we had something special. But you can never expect these kinds of numbers ? it blew the doors off the theaters."

As Dergarabedian phrased it: "Paul Thomas Anderson, among film buffs and film fans, is a directing god. He's on Mount Rushmore with Christopher Nolan and some other great filmmakers. When he puts out a movie, it's a long lead time ? we're forced to wait for a new Paul Thomas Anderson film. 'There Will Be Blood' was 2007.

"In the independent world, directors are the stars," he added. "They draw people to the theater and fill theaters."

Estimated ticket sales for Friday through Sunday at U.S. and Canadian theaters, according to Hollywood.com. Where available, latest international numbers are also included. Final domestic figures will be released Monday.

1. "Resident Evil: Retribution," $21.1 million ($50 million international).

Amplats to resume work as South Africa police get tough

JOHANNESBURG (Reuters) - Anglo American Platinum said it will resume work on Tuesday at its strike-hit Rustenburg operations, just days after South Africa's government launched a crackdown to disarm miners and end five weeks of labor unrest.

Amplats, the world's top producer of the precious metal, suspended some of its operations this week after machete-wielding strikers marched on shafts near Rustenburg, 100 km (60 miles) northwest of Johannesburg.

"The situation in Rustenburg remains calm and our current intention is to resume operations on Tuesday morning, which will provide time for the government to implement further security measures," the company said in a statement on Sunday.

Following a government promise to get tough on miners, police raided a Lonmin Plc hostel early on Saturday and seized spears, machetes and other weapons from strikers.

President Jacob Zuma's government, after weeks of drawing accusations of responding too slowly, said on Friday it would clamp down on "illegal gatherings" and go after armed miners.

The army has also been asked to help the police.

"The army has been requested to render support to an operation that is being conducted by the South African Police Service, not in the riot control, but for a specific operation," Defence Ministry official Brigadier General Xolani Mabanga told Reuters on Saturday.

Police used rubber bullets and tear gas to disperse miners following the Saturday raid.

In Marikana, near Rustenburg, police last month shot 34 striking miners dead in a single day, the bloodiest police action in South Africa since the end of apartheid in 1994. A total of 45 people have been killed in the unrest.

Sparked by the strike at a Lonmin mine in Marikana, the crisis has poisoned industrial relations in Africa's largest economy and choked platinum output. South Africa accounts for about 80 percent of the world's platinum production.

Finance Minister Pravin Gordhan told Reuters in an interview on Sunday there was no need yet to revise the outlook for fiscal performance in the 2012 budget plan, even if revenue has been lost from the unrest.

LONMIN PROMISES NEW APPROACH

Lonmin, due to resume talks on Monday with strikers who rejected a pay rise offer last week, on Sunday insisted it could not meet the workers' demands but promised a new approach in labor relations.

Acting Chief Executive Simon Scott said in an opinion piece published in the Sunday Times newspaper that the deaths of protesters had been a "wake-up call" for the company and it would improve discussions with strikers.

"For Lonmin, the starting point is to acknowledge that our company must go through a process of self-reflection," Scott said.

"What I can promise is that we are committed to playing our part. We have had our wake-up call, as has the rest of South Africa."

On Friday, workers at the mine dismissed the company's offer as way below the 12,500 rand ($1,500) a month sought by members of the militant Association of Mineworkers and Construction Union (AMCU), which is challenging the influence of the more established National Union of Mineworkers (NUM).

Wage talks at Lonmin were expected to resume at 4.00 a.m. EDT on Monday.

Scott, who has been acting chief executive while Ian Farmer has been on sick leave since last month, reiterated the company's position that the 12,500 would put thousands of jobs at risk and challenge the viability of the business.

It would cost the company 2.3 billion rand, he said.

Lonmin is offering increases of between 9 percent and 21 percent. In a statement on Sunday it denied a report by NUM that it had improved its key offer to rock drill operators, who are at the center of the unrest.

The strikes have been seized on by Julius Malema, a rebel expelled from the ruling African National Congress who has become Zuma's most strident critic and who urged strikers to make mines "ungovernable".

South Africa's elite police unit, the Hawks, said on Sunday it was investigating a case against Malema, opened by trade union Solidarity earlier this month, of incitement of violence and intimidation.

"That case has been referred to us and we are currently investigating," Hawks spokesman MacIntosh Polela said.

"We are not going to narrow it to Marikana. We are just going to look for evidence of this incitement, aspects of it are going definitely to be Marikana."

Zombies may have a tougher time taking over the world after a counterterrorism training program scheduled next month in San Diego.

MilitaryTimes.com on Sunday reported that California-based security firm HALO Corp. will incorporate training to fight the undead during its Oct. 29 to Nov. 2 Counter-Terrorism Summit expected to draw 1,000 military personnel, law enforcement officials, medical experts and government workers to the 44-acre Paradise Point resort island in San Diego?s Mission Bay.

The company, founded by former special operations, national security and intelligence personnel, says its annual summit this year will include a realistic tactical training environment using ?Hollywood magic? in live action demonstrations, realistic tactical training scenarios and classroom education.

How To Disrupt Petty Inconveniences

probsDepending on who you ask, Jack Dorsey started off the latest Disrupt on either a very controversial or a very non-controversial note. "We need revolution, not disruption," he said, words that would be easy to characterize as platitudes if he were not working hard at uprooting a few global institutions. Even so, the sentiment did not entirely match the tone of the conference that was to follow. Whether you want to call it a bubble or not, it's not controversial to say that there are millions upon millions of dollars going to ideas, services, and sites that will be dead or irrelevant in a year or two. The metaphor of the Cambrian explosion has been employed, of course. Tellingly, the Wikipedia article for it reads "most organisms were simple, composed of individual cells occasionally organized into colonies." What a marvelously apt description of the creatures I saw on display this week! A great number of the startups (a word that is beginning to lose all meaning, by the way) that I saw were aimed at solving problems so trifling that the first objective of many pitches was to alert the audience that they exist. Is this healthy? Yes and no.
