Significant improvement in blood pressure tied to greater adherence to DASH diet, Journal of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics reports

Philadelphia, PA, September 19, 2012 The Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension (DASH) diet, which promotes consumption of more fruits, vegetables, low-fat dairy products, and whole grain, and less meats and sweets, is a proven effective treatment for hypertension. For some individuals, adherence to the diet can be just as effective in lowering blood pressure as taking antihypertensive medication. A new study has found that greater adherence to the diet can lead to significant reductions in blood pressure, but that African Americans are less likely to adopt the diet compared to whites. The study is published online today in the Journal of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics.

"After DASH dietary counseling, African Americans increased their consumption of DASH foods, but continued to lag behind whites in overall adherence to the DASH eating plan, consuming considerably more meat, sweets, and fat, and less fruit," reports lead investigator James A. Blumenthal, PhD, Professor of Behavioral Medicine in the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences at Duke University Medical Center in Durham, NC.

The study was a new analysis of the ENCORE study, which evaluated the effectiveness of the DASH diet alone and in combination with exercise training and weight reduction. 144 sedentary, overweight, and obese adults with high blood pressure were randomly assigned to three treatment groups. The first group ate the DASH diet and was engaged in weekly education, support, and feedback in group sessions. The second group also ate the DASH diet and received structured support and feedback, and in addition began a weight management program with caloric restriction, behavior modification, and aerobic exercise three times a week. The third group was instructed to maintain their normal diet and activity, but did not receive in instruction in the DASH diet nor were they encouraged to exercise or lose weight.

Researchers evaluated adherence to the diet, clinic and ambulatory blood pressure, and cardiorespiratory fitness. Participants also underwent a number of psychosocial assessments to evaluate their mental and social wellbeing and to identify potential predictors of dietary adherence including depression, anxiety, level of support from family and friends, and their beliefs about health and exercise. Demographic and background variables, including sex, age, ethnicity, income, education, and baseline body mass index were also examined.

After four months, participants in the DASH plus weight management group lost more weight compared to the DASH diet alone and control groups. There was no difference in dietary compliance between the DASH plus weight maintenance and the Dash alone groups. Participants with higher post-treatment DASH adherence scores had lower blood pressure levels, and the more participants adhered to the daily recommendations in the diet, the more their blood pressure decreased.

While both African-American and white participants in the DASH treatment groups increased their consumption of DASH foods after treatment, African Americans in both treatment groups had lower adherence scores compared to whites. No other demographic, behavioral, or social variable predicted DASH adherence.

"Strong cultural influences on food preferences, food preparation, and perceptions about eating practices might make it more challenging for African Americans to adhere to the DASH diet," Dr. Blumenthal notes. "In light of the considerable role that food plays in African-American culture, greater cultural sensitivity is likely to be needed to achieve greater adoption of the DASH eating pattern when prescribing dietary modification programs. For example, it might be more effective to modify traditional recipes to meet current nutritional guidelines rather than to recommend that such foods be eliminated altogether."

In a video accompanying the article, co-investigator Pao-Hwa Lin, PhD, a nutritionist from the Department of Medicine at Duke University Medical Center, discusses the implications of the study and possible reasons for lower adherence to the DASH diet in African Americans.

Do You Serve Your Spouse? - Black And Married With Kids.com

I am not ashamed to say that serving my husband brings me joy. I don?t know if it is women?s lib or the bad state of current day relationships, but some people are going to have a problem with that statement. ?Girl..you?re not a slave..you don?t work for that man!?

While it is true that I am not a slave and I don?t work for my husband, I know that when I put his needs before mine or when I cater to him that it brings him joy (and ultimately it strengthen?s my marriage.)

This is not something that came easy for me in marriage. When we were first married, I still had a few selfish ways in me. I would often think in my head, why should I do XYZ for him? He is not doing the same for me. I had the ?what?s in it for me attitude.?

And this attitude showed too! So I would fix his plate, or take his car to get an oil change, or fold his laundry, and I just had a bad spirit about doing those things. It was like..here you go..here?s your plate.

But as time passed, I came to realize that the more I put his needs before my own in the relationship, the better our relationship became. He was so appreciative of the little things that I would do for him that he wanted to reciprocate the love.

I would bring him his plate?and he would kiss me and say you are the best wife ever. Or sometimes out of the blue, he would just tell me how much he appreciated me so much. I would be like: ?What..what did I do?? And he would say, you just did XYZ for me.

And now my attitude has totally flipped. I am always thinking: ?This man is so good to me, am I doing enough?? Instead of worrying about what he has not done for me, I have actually opened my eyes to see that he has always served me in his own way.

The National Healthy Marriage Institute says that one of the keys to happy relationships is putting your spouse?s needs before your own. This will allow you to create a ?spirit of service? in your relationship. Here are five more things they want you to know about service:

  • ?The antidote to selfishness is service.? ?It?s difficult to be selfish when you are serving your spouse. ?Service forces you to put the needs of your spouse before your own needs.
  • ?The spirit of service is contagious.? ?Give it a try. ?They say that your spouse will begin to reciprocate in about 3 weeks. ?So continue to be consistent with your service and watch your relationship change!!
  • ?Serving your spouse does not mean tolerating abuse or unacceptable behavior.? ?If your spouse is abusing you physically or mentally, you need to seek help immediately.

If you are having a problem with serving your spouse, then I ask you to put it to the test. ?Make a list of 5 things that you can do every day to serve your spouse and do them?consistently. ?And do them with a cheerful heart and without any thoughts of what you may or may not get in return. ?And you will begin to experience ?the joy and happiness in your marriage that accompanies service.?

BMWK ?- Have you experienced selfishness in your marriage? How did you deal with it?

"Silver Linings Playbook" wins top prize at Toronto fest

TORONTO (Reuters) - "Silver Linings Playbook," a dramatic comedy about a man who returns to his family home after eight months in a mental institution, won the top prize at the Toronto International Film Festival on Sunday.

The film, by "The Fighter" director David O. Russell and starring Bradley Cooper and Jennifer Lawrence, took home the BlackBerry People's Choice award for best film at the 37th edition of the festival.

Based on the novel by Matthew Quick, "Silver Linings Playbook" examines one man's recovery from a personal and professional meltdown. The film held its world premiere at the festival last week.

"Just as 'The Fighter' to me was not about fighting, this movie to me is not about mental illness," Russell said last week. "To me, it's always about the people and the dynamic of the people.

Recent winners of the People's Choice award, which is selected by festival audiences, include Oscar-winners "The King's Speech" and "Slumdog Millionaire."

The runner-up for the prize was Ben Affleck's "Argo," a fact-based thriller about an outlandish plan to get six stranded Americans out of Tehran after the 1979 invasion of the American Embassy by having them masquerade as a Canadian film crew.

"Argo" also had its world premiere at the Toronto festival.

The People's Choice award for top documentary went to "Artifact," which follows actor Jared Leto and his band Thirty Seconds to Mars as they record their album "This Is War," while waging a legal battle against their label.

"This film is so personal and has been such a labor of love," Leto said in a statement read by festival organizers. "Thank you so much to every single person who voted."

The People's Choice award for top Midnight Madness film went to Bartholomew Cubbins' "Seven Psychopaths," a blood-spattered comedy starring Colin Farrell as a screenwriter struggling to complete the script for a serial-killer movie, and featuring audience favorites Christopher Walken and Woody Harrelson.

The best Canadian feature award went to Xavier Dolan's "Laurence Anyways," a drama about a heterosexual relationship that is sent into a tailspin when the man confesses that he believes he's transgendered.

BUILDING OSCAR BUZZ

Launched in 1976, the Toronto festival now ranks with Cannes and Sundance as one of the world's top movie gatherings. The festival often serves as a launching point for films and performances that go on to win Academy Awards, as well as international films seeking distribution deals.

Even before its People's Choice win, "Silver Linings Playbook" was leading best picture Oscar buzz at the festival, with Lawrence's performance as a sexually forward widow fighting depression also stirring talk of a best actress nomination.

"Argo" leaves Toronto as another strong contender for a best picture nomination and possibly a best director nomination for Affleck, who won an Academy Award in 1998 for co-writing "Good Will Hunting" with actor Matt Damon.

Paul Thomas Anderson's "The Master" continued to impress critics and audiences in Toronto, especially for performances by lead actors Philip Seymour Hoffman and Joaquin Phoenix.

Bill Murray also gained attention for his turn as Franklin D. Roosevelt in "Hyde Park on Hudson" while Noah Baumbach's art house film "Frances Ha" has won over critics and audiences alike.

Films not quite living up to their high expectations include eagerly anticipated literary adaptations - "Anna Karenina" and "Midnight's Children" - while "Cloud Atlas," co-directed by Tom Tykwer and "The Matrix Trilogy" sibling team, divided critics with its complex multiple storylines.

SELLING TORONTO

Sarah Polley's autobiographical documentary "Stories We Tell" was one of the early sales at a festival while "The Place Beyond the Pines," starring Ryan Gosling and directed by Derek Cianfrance, was the first major acquisition, scoring roughly $2.5 million, according to media reports.

Other sales included sex addiction comedy "Thanks for Sharing" starring Gwyneth Paltrow, Mark Ruffalo and singer Pink; "Imogene" with Kristen Wiig; and "Crying Game" filmmaker Neil Jordan's "Byzantium."

All told nearly 40 films had signed deals at the festival, as of Saturday, including 29 major sales to U.S. distributors

"It's been a particularly robust year for sales," said Justin Cutler, senior manager of sales and industry for the festival. "We're happy that the festival's official selection will reach film lovers across the world."

Three reasons to see 'Finding Nemo' in 3-D

By Gael Fashingbauer Cooper, NBC News

If you have kids in your life of a certain age, you've seen "Finding Nemo" so many times you know all the names of the Tank Gang, will never forget P. Sherman's Sydney address, know exactly when John Ratzenberger makes his voice cameo, and have spent waaay too much time wondering how they ever got out of those individual Baggies.

So why should you pay the upcharged ticket price to see the 2003 Pixar classic in 3-D?

Three reasons.

1. "Mommy, the ocean's gonna pop out in our face and Marlin's gonna swim out to us!" -- my 4-year-old, as she put on her 3-D glasses and the movie she'd seen a hundred times at home rolled out in a new dimension on the big screen.

If you like "Nemo," you'll love it in 3-D. The film is a visual treat even on a lousy home TV, and on the big screen, it's a dazzling rainbow of rich turquoise water, bright green plants, and sea creatures in every shade. And let's face it -- it's easy to get distracted when watching from your couch. In the darkened theater, even scenes that you might have skipped over at home prove worth watching for their humor and rich detail.

2. There's a new "Toy Story" short, featuring Rex the dinosaur getting down with a new crowd of pals -- bathtub toys.

3. Did you hear those unconfirmed rumors about a 2016 "Nemo" sequel? Just in case they prove true, it's fascinating to watch the movie again in theaters and notice the numerous places from which a smart sequel could develop. How about a look inside a day at Nemo's school? Or discovering what really did happen to the Tank Gang once their Baggied selves plopped into the water??We're not usually big fans of sequels to true classics, but if it had to be done, you can envision Pixar doing it well.

Are you a "Finding Nemo" fan? Will you see it in 3-D? What about those sequel rumors? ?Tell us what you think on Facebook.

China reins in rowdy anti-Japan demonstrations

BEIJING (AP) ? China moved to tamp down rising anti-Japan sentiment after a weekend of sometimes violent demonstrations, threatening Monday to arrest lawbreakers and scrubbing websites of protest-related images and posts.

Tensions have been growing for months in the dispute over ownership of a string of uninhabited islands in the East China Sea called the Senkakus in Japan and Diaoyu in China. Those came to a head last week when the Japanese government said it was purchasing some of the islands from their private owner to thwart a Japanese politician's plans to buy and develop them.

China reacted angrily, sending marine patrol ships inside Japanese-claimed waters around the islands, which Tokyo has administered since 1972. Some state media urged Chinese to show their patriotism by boycotting Japanese goods and canceling travel to Japan.

Protests flared in cities across China over the weekend, with occasional outbreaks of violence, including the torching and looting of Japanese-invested factories and shops. They were the largest anti-Japanese demonstrations since 2005, reflecting ever-present anger toward Tokyo that periodically bursts to the surface.

In Tokyo, visiting U.S. Defense Secretary Leon Panetta urged both sides to resolve the dispute diplomatically, and said Washington, as a matter of policy, does not take sides in sovereignty matters.

"We are concerned by the demonstrations, and we are concerned by the conflict," Panetta said after talks with his Japanese counterpart, Satoshi Morimoto. "It is in everybody's interest ? Japan and China ? to maintain good relations and to find a way to avoid further escalation."

China's authoritarian government rarely allows protests and the wave of anti-Japanese demonstrations had clearly met privately with official approval. Authorities, however, are walking a tightrope between allowing citizens to vent and losing control of the protests, which could then turn against the government.

By Monday, authorities were clamping down.

In the western city of Xi'an, police issued an order banning large-scale protests in commercial areas, districts with large populations, and anywhere near government offices. The statement also warned that the use of mobile texting or online messaging to organize illegal demonstrations was forbidden.

In the southern city of Guangzhou, police said they arrested seven people for attacking cars and three for vandalizing shops.

"The Guangzhou police would like to remind the public to be rational while being patriotic. Demonstrations must proceed according to law," police said in a statement.

Police in the eastern port of Qingdao, where protesters torched a Panasonic factory and Toyota dealership, also reported arrests.

Authorities also tried to rein in online sentiment, with searches for posts or images related to the demonstrations met with an error message on China's Twitter-like Sina Weibo microblogging site. Users who posted related content saw their material deleted by censors.

The tightened security follows demands from Japan that China ensure the safety of Japanese citizens and businesses. Japanese media have reported at least six incidents of Japanese citizens being attacked.

About 60 people protested Monday outside the Japanese Embassy in Beijing, far outnumbered by around 1,000 security personnel.

While Beijing appears to be winding down this phase of protests, the end of the annual East China Sea fishing ban could raise new frictions. Thousands of fishing boats left ports on Sunday, many of them headed for waters near the disputed islands.

More demonstrations were expected Tuesday on the anniversary of the Mukden Incident, the 1931 bombing of a railway in northeastern China that Japan used as a pretext to invade.

An unofficial support group, the Patriotic Chinese Alliance for Defending the Diaoyu Islands, planned to protest Tuesday in the central city of Changsha, said member Li Nan, adding more protests were expected in other cities as well.

Japanese businesses were taking no chances, with restaurants and shops in Beijing, including popular clothing retailer Uniqlo, closed on Monday. Factories belonging to electronics maker Panasonic, two of which were damaged over the weekend, were also closed through Tuesday.

Meanwhile, state media moved to temper its rhetoric.

On Monday, the Beijing Morning Post, the Global Times and other state papers warned against irrational displays of patriotism and violence.

"Violent protests should never be condoned," the Global Times said in an online commentary. "Violence can only weaken the current campaign against Japan."

Gardner: The Law as Ass ? Slaw

Slaw readers who enjoy a little legal philosophy might take a look at the OUP (Oxford University Press) Blog post by John Gardner, "When law is part of the problem", in which he addresses one of the issues from his new book of essays, Law as a Leap of Faith. In the blog post Gardner, who is a Professor of Jurisprudence at Oxford, sketches his argument that we should adopt the "assymetrical interpretation of the rule of law," which requires officialdom to observe the laws scrupulously while allowing citizens greater lattitutde in that respect. That is, the rule of law as an ideal is more threatened by official arbitrariness than it is by popular disobedience.

It's gratifying to me to see Gardner lambaste governments for vastly multiplying our laws to the point where no citizen, no matter how well educated and informed, could possibly be aware of all her obligations?and to the point where enforcement across the board becomes impossible, requiring vast discretionary powers to be devolved onto officials, a primary source of arbitrariness and corruption. This point seems so obvious to me and yet we carry on blithely multiplying laws, much in the manner of Santayana's fanatic, who, when he's lost the plot, redoubles his efforts.

Gardner aims to present this and other philosophical issues about law in as clear and non-technical language as possible (as perhaps only English analytical philosophers can). He succeeds in making this blog post and, presumably his book as well, a real pleasure to read.
