Tel Aviv University researcher discovers homing device that draws cancer

The process of metastasis, by which cancer cells travel from a tumor site and proliferate at other sites in the body, is a serious threat to cancer patients. According to the National Cancer Institute, most recurrences of cancer are metastases rather than "new" cancers.

Virtually all types of cancer can spread to other parts of the body, including the brain. Once metastatic melanoma cells are entrenched in the brain, patients typically have only a few months to live.

Now Prof. Isaac Witz and his team at Tel Aviv University's Department of Cell Research and Immunology are delving deeper into what attracts metastatic melanoma cells to the brain, and how they survive and prosper in this environment. Their experiments have discovered that melanoma cells produce receptors for two chemokines a family of small proteins secreted by cells present in the brain tissue. These receptors may act as a homing device, drawing the cancerous cells to the brain.

"These interactions between the chemokines in the brain and the melanoma cell receptors could be potential targets for new therapies," Prof. Witz says. "With medications that suppress these molecules, you could hope to interfere with this specific migration." Published in the International Journal of Cancer, this research is supported by the Dr. Miriam and Sheldon G. Adelson Medical Research Foundation.

A dangerous attraction

Although metastasis is a well-understood process, researchers are still trying to uncover the underlying mechanisms of why cancer cells begin to migrate in the first place. It is also crucial to understand what allows them to sustain themselves, divide, and propagate once they have arrived at their new location.

To better understand metastacized melanoma cells in the brain, the researchers cultured brain tissue in the lab, then analyzed all of the materials that were expressed by the cells. They identified certain chemokine receptors in brain-metastasizing melanoma cells and corresponding chemokines in the brain tissue which could ultimately be responsible for the cancer cells' being "attracted" to the brain. If a certain chemokine is released from the brain, and the melanoma cells have the appropriate receptors, a chemical attraction will take place where the melanoma cells would be drawn to wherever the chemokine is.

Duplicating nature

The researchers have also developed a method to compare metastatic and non-metastatic cells with identical genetic backgrounds. Though they are derived from the same cancer, some of these cells become metastatic, while others do not. "This is a good way for us to concentrate on the genes that are specific to metastatic cells. Because we have these two types of cellular variants, where only one goes to the brain and metastasizes, it's an important tool" for future research, explains Prof. Witz.

The researchers have found that mice that are inoculated with non-metastatic cells do end up with melanoma cells in the brain, but they are dormant and do not generate overt metastasis. The key is to discover why these originally identical cells differ why the non-metastatic cells don't develop in the same way.

Understanding the process will help scientists to "duplicate what nature does, and prevent these cells from becoming metastatic," says Prof. Witz. "If there already is metastasis, it is too late so what we want to do is to prevent development by understanding the mechanism that keeps the non-metastatic cells dormant."

Does TV Romance Challenge The Real Thing? | Psych Central News

By Rick Nauert PhD Senior News Editor
Reviewed by John M. Grohol, Psy.D. on September 19, 2012

Does TV Romance Challenge The Real Thing? Are people vicariously seduced by romantic television relationships undermining?the development of real-world romantic relationships?

Maybe so, finds a new study which suggests the threat is real for frequent television watchers.

Investigators from Albion College found that the more an individual believed in television portrayals of romance, the less likely they were to be committed to their relationships.

Investigators noted that many of the most-watched television shows (?Burn Notice,? ?True Blood,? ?The Big Bang Theory,? and ?Two and a Half Men?) feature romantic relationships prominently throughout their episodes.

Investigators believe this research will help individuals understand the impact that television viewing can have on their relationships.

?In this study I found that people who believe the unrealistic portrayals on TV are actually less committed to their spouses and think their alternatives to their spouse are relatively attractive,??said study author Jeremy Osborn, Ph.D.

?My hope would be that people would read this article and take a look at their own relationships and the relationships of those around them. How realistic are your expectations for your partner and where did those expectations come from??

Researchers followed over 390 married couples with participants asked to respond to questions about their satisfaction with their current romantic relationship, relationship expectations, relationship commitment, belief in television portrayals of romantic relationships, viewing frequency, and several others that focused on their spousal relationship.

Investigators discovered that the more an individual believed in the television romance, the higher people believed their relationship costs were. Relationship ?costs? include a person?s loss of personal freedom, loss of time, or their partner?s unattractive qualities.

In other words, belief in television romance was associated with setting a higher bar for real romantic relationships.

?We live in a society that perpetually immerses itself in media images from both TV and the web, but most people have no sense of the ways those images are impacting them,? Osborn said.

Researchers believe the misperceptions may be a factor for relationship failure.

?The rate of marriage failure in the U. S. is not dropping, and it is important for people to have a sense of what factors are leading to the failure of so many relationships.?

The study will be published in the journal Mass Communication and Society.

James Gunn Confirmed for Guardians of the Galaxy

Director Writer James Gunn

Marvel Studios has directors lined up for their next six films and all of them are first-timers to the franchise outside of Joss Whedon who himself will be back for?The Avengers 2. Shane Black is currently on the final stretch of shooting?Iron Man 3 while Alan Taylor just began principal photography on?Thor: The Dark World.

After that, Anthony & Joe Russo are preparing for a March 2013 start to?Captain America: The Winter Soldier, Edgar Wright may finally sit in the director?s chair to make?Ant-Man a reality and sometime next year, James Gunn will begin production on?Guardians of the Galaxy. The latter we?ve known for quite some time but Gunn couldn?t confirm until today.

The news first broke a month ago that Marvel Studios was interested in James Gunn helming?Guardians of the Galaxy and as recently as last week, Joss Whedon was quoted as praising his ?twisted? take on the comic property. Even Gunn?s friend Nathan Fillion spoke about Gunn?s excitement for the opportunity but neither the studio or the director of Super and Slither?himself have?officially confirmed it until today. On his Facebook page moments ago, Gunn posted the following statement as a thank you to supporters for all the encouragement based on the leaked news alone.

For a month or so there?s been a lot of Internet speculation about my involvement with Marvel?s Guardians of the Galaxy. Until now I haven?t said anything, because I?m trying to be less expulsive about this project than I am about the rest of my life. But last night I got the go-ahead from Kevin Feige to let you all know that, yes, indeed, I am rewriting and directing Guardians of the Galaxy. As a lifelong lover of Marvel comics, space epics, AND raccoons, this is the movie I?ve been waiting to make since I was nine years old. Kevin, Joss, and all the folks at Marvel have been amazing collaborators so far, and we?re committed to bringing you something majestic, beautiful, and unique. I am incredibly excited. I am also incredibly grateful to the fans and the press for all their words of encouragement and support regarding my involvement with this project since the news first leaked. Thanks ? you have, honestly, touched and overwhelmed me. And that?s it for now. Other than the occasional photos of my dog and cat here on Facebook, I?ll talk to you again in August 2014 when Guardians is released!

The self-proclaimed lover of raccoons confirms our speculation that much like?Whedon rewrote Zak Penn?s script?for? The Avengers, Gunn will be doing the same for?Guardians. He?ll be rewriting (co-writing?) the screenplay by?Chris McCoy who Marvel Studios signed?a month ago to rewrite the original draft by Nicole Perlman. McCoy is an industry newcomer who has yet to have a script produced but he had several of his spec scripts land on the Black List (Hollywood?s list of best unproduced scripts). We don?t yet know how far he got with his draft, if at all, now that Gunn is involved.

Richard's Real Estate and Urban Economics Blog: Are ballots more ...

I really don't know. ?But Parris Glendening made an interesting point at a conference I participated in at GW last week: that in Los Angeles, people decided to tax themselves (via Measure R) to build a light rail system. ?So while such systems fail to pass the cost-benefit test, and often worsen the bus service that low income riders rely on, they do, in the case of LA, reflect the will of the people.

I am guessing most people don't read the works of John Kain?before they vote; they also don't read IEEE journals before buying PCs. ?Los Angeles is implementing measure R in the manner described when it was on the ballot, which makes it very different from the high-speed rail initiative. ?I think I need to make my peace with light rail in LA (although I sure wish the Expo line worked better).

PATENT TUTORIALS: Basics of PATENTS: Types of Patents, Patent ...

    Article Source:?http://techcorplegal.com/Blog_Technology_Law_Business_Research/2012/09/17/pat...

    PATENT TUTORIALS

Why is a Patent search required?

There are many reasons to perform a patent search. The most obvious reason to perform the patent search is to know if the invention can be patented or has been already patented. The other reasons for performing a patent search are listed below:

    1. To make the concept clear of how the application and patent is designed and to use the idea to prepare your own patent application.
    2. To acquire knowledge about a new subject matter.
    3. To attain information about market.
    4. To track the competitor and the patent technology used by him.

    Explanations of types of Patents

    • Invention of a Patent ? The innovation of an unconventional, non obvious and useful object, device, composition or a process defines ?invention of a patent?.
    • Application of a Patent ? The detailed description of an invention demonstrated in a printed document which is to be submitted to a Patent Office to secure a patent on the invention.
    • Patent ? The government assigns the license of ownership to the inventor that gives him the claim to debar others from making, using or selling the claimed invention.
    • Reduction to Practice ? The detailed description of making and using the invention compactly.
    • Prior Art ? Prior art constitutes all information that has been made available to the public in any form before a given date that might be relevant to a patent?s claims of originality. If an invention has been described in the prior art, a patent on that invention is not valid.

    TYPES OF PATENTS

The patents are differentiated on the basis of their nature of invention. They are broadly classified into three types:

    1. Utility Patents ? The inventor inventing any unconventional object, device, composition or process can have utility patent.
    2. Design Patents ? The inventor inventing any new ornamental design of an article of manufacture can have design patent.
    3. Plant Patents ? The inventor inventing or discovering a new variety of plant by reproducing it asexually can have plant patent.

    Patentable Inventions

Inventions of Utility ? The utility patents are classified into five legal classes:

    1. Processes which include conventional process i.e. making of an article, and software processes.
    2. Machines which include conventional machines (machines with moveable parts) and software machines.
    3. Manufactured Products which include articles with non movable parts.
    4. Compositions of Matter which include chemicals, alloys and pharmaceuticals.
    5. The new changes in the above mentioned inventions.

The invention must be useful. The invention must be original that has its own valuable features and has never been seen before. The invention should be noticeable to the skilled people of the area of invention.

    • Inventions of Design
    • Invention of Asexually Reproducible Plants

    Non-Patentable Inventions

    • Changed size, shape, or form.
    • Adjustability.
    • Natural Laws
    • Brief Ideas
    • Seniority over Secondary
    • Usage of old Art
    • Deduction of Parts
    • Musical and Dramatic works
    • Inventions made for illegal purposes
    • Inventions made against law of nature

    Fictions related to Patents

This is not true as the patents have monetary value only, that is also when they are used to protect the patent?s claim by excluding others from making, using or selling the invention.

    • Government verified Patents

This is not true as the patents are not verified by the government. The government is not involved in seeing whether the patent will work or not.?

This is not true as the term ?Provisional Patent? does not exist. A provisional application can be filed in most jurisdictions, which provides a date for priority placeholder. If the filing of full application is not done within one year, the priority date is lost.?

    • Just the idea is described in the Provisional Application

This is not true as full disclosure is required for filing the provisional application and the information should also be detailed in the application. The formal structure, the disclosure and the claims of the full application are not required by the provisional application.

This is not true as patent is not obtained for an idea or just a suggestion. Patents are granted to those who invent or discover a new and useful object, device, composition or a process, or make any useful improvement. Complete and enabling disclosure is also required.?

    • The owner is given the exclusive rights to make, use and sell the invention

This is not true as the owner is given the right to exclude others from making, using and selling the patent?s claims. An inventor having broader claims in a prior patent can prevent the inventor, with narrow claims from using the inventor?s own patent.?

    • Honoring US Patent worldwide

This is not true as US patent is enforced only in US. The US inventor can stop from importing what is covered in US, but the inventor is free to make, use and sell the invention in any country.?

    • Infringement of Patent is a Crime

This is not true as a patent in combination with a legal opinion will only give the right to sue in a civil case against the alleged offender. Infringement of a patent is not a crime. For enforcing the rights the responsibility is granted by a patent and it is in the hands of the patent owner.?

    Patent Classification

Patent Classification helps in categorizing an invention. It is characteristically expressed as ?482/1?. The class of the invention is expressed by 482. The following number is the subclass. In the USPC there are 450 classes and 150000 subclasses. Short descriptions are provided by the titles of classes and sub classes. For classification process, the patents are always classified under sub class level. Each patent and published application is assigned to one or more classification.

    Importance of Patent Classification

    • Used as a tool to search patents.
    • For assisting the patent application to examiner for examination process.
    • Have definitions.
    • Have relationships with one another.
