7 Steps to Managing Pay Per Click Ads for Small Businesses ...

Pay per click ads are an excellent opportunity for small businesses to get the word out on their business and products. With a small investment, management can reach a large audience based on their interests, geographical location, as well as other key demographics. While the rewards for strategic pay per click (PPC) advertising can be significant, businesses can quickly burn through their entire budget without seeing a return on their investment unless they strategically plan their PPC advertising strategy. By developing a strategic advertising plan, the small business can minimize risk and optimize the return on their investment.

1. Define Your Goals

The first step in beginning any advertising strategy is to know the intended goal for the advertising campaign. Pay per click ads can be used to announce a new company or a social media page. Many advertisers use Facebook ads to drive traffic to their Facebook page or website. Google pay per click ads can be used to present a product or service to individuals who search for certain keywords. The goal could also be to generate leads that will be followed up on by driving visitors to a landing page for the product or service.

2. Set Your Budget/ Set Your Budgetary Constraints

Once the goal is determined, the second factor management must consider is the budget. This is often the area that will most limit your advertising potential. With pay per click ads charging a predetermined rate per click, the number of clicks will be limited by the budget. Along the lines of setting the budget, the flow of ad presentation is also important. Would you like your ad to be presented as quickly as possible or would you like the ad to be titrated over a certain amount of time? An ad campaign of $300 could be used up in one day if enough clicks occur. By setting the ad campaign to a certain budget per day, the advertiser could limit the campaign to $30 a day and ensure at least 10 days of ads.

3. Determine Your Demographic

A primary failing of many advertising campaigns is the improper determination of demographics. If a service is primarily geared towards men, the ad presentation can be limited to men only. If certain ages are the key demographic, the ad can also be limited to this range. By removing demographics that are less prone to respond with a sale, the advertiser can maximize their marketing budget.

4. Determine Your Keywords

Ad presentation is based on keywords either in the search terms for search engines, such as Google, or the profile of social media sites. Keyword choice is one of the most critical decisions, management will make in the advertising campaign. Certain keywords will cost more than others to target, making it important to use long-tail keywords that are as likely to generate responses but will ultimately cost the advertiser less money. A hybrid car dealer in Atlanta, Georgia, could use ?hybrid car? for a premium cost or ?hybrid car Atlanta, GA? to both reduce costs as well as more finely target their audience.

5. Determine Your Pay per Click

Pay per click ads are based on a bidding process where each advertiser sets a maximum cost per click. This cost per click will be used by the ad presenter to determine which ad will be presented. An advertiser who bids $4 per click will see their ads shown before one who bids $3 per click. As mentioned previously, some keywords have a much higher cost. This may necessitate raising the overall budget, choosing longer tail keywords, or abandoning a keyword that is too expensive to compete on.

6. Create Multiple Ads

Despite all the effort put into an ad, the consumer will respond to some ads and fail to respond to others. Often the difference between a successful ad and one that fails to gain attention is purely subjective. Most pay per click services will allow you to create multiple ads under the same campaign. By varying the terms in the ad, images, demographic constraints, and keywords, you can test out multiple ad strategies.

7. Follow the Metrics

Knowing which ads are performing and which are not will allow the advertiser to revise struggling ads. The ad campaign metrics will provide management with information regarding the number of views, the number of clicks, as well as other key advertising metrics. This data will allow you to fine tune ads to better target your core audience.

By carefully planning your pay per click ad campaign, you will be able to control costs, track response, and as importantly, track your return on investment. Pay per click advertising can quickly benefit the small business management team by opening up new advertising opportunities for small businesses looking to expand beyond their traditional direct marketing campaign.

Pro-Romney Super PAC plowed through cash war chest in August

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The "Super PAC" backing Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney plowed through $21.2 million in August as its fundraising declined for the second month, raising questions about how much of an ad-buying force it will be for Romney in the final weeks before the November 6 election.

Financial disclosures filed on Thursday showed that Restore Our Future - the "super" political action committee whose attack ads on Romney's foes played a key role in boosting him to the Republican nomination - had just $6.3 million in cash at the end of last month.

The group's report to the Federal Election Commission said it raised $7 million in August - less than rival Priorities USA, a group supporting Democratic President Barack Obama.

Restore Our Future, which declined to comment, kicked up its spending in August to try to counter Obama's well-funded campaign, whose ads dominated the airwaves in many parts of the country last month.

Obama's campaign on Thursday reported spending some $83.2 million in August, when it raised $84.2 million.

Romney's campaign raised $66.1 million in August, but spent $61.2 million and could not dip into a large chunk of his cash because a provision in U.S. campaign law walled it off until after his official nomination at the Republican convention in Tampa in late August.

The law helps explain why Romney's team - despite no limits on contributions to its PAC and a healthy fundraising operation benefiting the Republican's campaign - wound up being stretched for cash at the end of August, and having to take out a $20 million loan to make it to the general election period.

The long-term impact of the dip in fundraising on Romney's overall effort is unclear.

Romney stands to benefit from other independent groups that can raise and spend unlimited amounts. They include American Crossroads and Crossroads GPS, a Super PAC and nonprofit co-founded by former George W. Bush aide Karl Rove, as well as Americans for Prosperity, which is funded by billionaire brothers Charles and David Koch.

Even so, the August totals - along with many of the independent Republican groups turning their focus to races for the U.S. Senate and House - could reflect some of the discontent that many conservatives feel toward Romney's campaign, which trails Obama's nationwide and in several of the politically divided "swing" states that will decide the election.

OBAMA'S TEAM STILL AHEAD

The academic Wesleyan Media Project last week found that 54 percent of pro-Romney or anti-Obama ads run between late April and early September came from independent groups.

Democratic groups, generally unable to match Republican groups' fundraising prowess this year, funded just 9 percent of ads benefiting Obama during that time.

The main pro-Obama Super PAC, Priorities USA, also spent heavily on the president's behalf in August, dishing out $9.5 million, which left it with $4.8 million in the bank.

But for the long-struggling Democratic group - Democrats generally disdain the unlimited fundraising of PACs - August marked its best fundraising month, with $10.1 million raised.

In the overall race for cash to keep voter turnout operations and advertising running through the election, Obama and his allies are still ahead.

The president and the Democratic Party have raised a total of just less than $740 million this campaign season, compared with roughly $630 million raised by Romney for his campaign and the Republican Party, according to news releases and disclosures.

PRO-ROMNEY GROUP'S TOTAL DROPS

In June the fundraising total for Restore Our Future, the pro-Romney PAC, raised $20.7 million, with $10 million of that coming from billionaire casino mogul Sheldon Adelson and his wife, Miriam.

In July, without any donations from the Adelsons, the group's fundraising total dipped to $7.4 million. The Adelsons also did not give in August.

Restore Our Future received two $1 million donations in August: one from Bob Parsons, billionaire founder of the web hosting giant Go Daddy; and from OdysseyRe Holdings Corp, a Stamford, Connecticut-based reinsurance firm owned by Toronto-based Fairfax Financial Holdings Ltd.

Corporations contributed just under half of Restore Our Future's cash last month.

Priorities USA got a $2 million gift from billionaire hedge fund manager James Simons and a total of $1.1 million from five different trade unions.

Epigenetics: Mother's nutrition -- before pregnancy -- may alter function of her children's genes

ScienceDaily (Sep. 20, 2012) ? Everyone knows that what mom eats when pregnant makes a huge difference in the health of her child. Now, new research in mice suggests that what she ate before pregnancy might be important too. According to a new research report published online in The FASEB Journal, what a group of female mice ate -- before pregnancy -- chemically altered their DNA and these changes were passed to her offspring. These DNA alterations, called "epigenetic" changes, drastically affected the pups' metabolism of many essential fatty acids.

These results could have a profound impact on future research for diabetes, obesity, cancer, and immune disorders.

"As parents, we have to understand better that our responsibilities to our children are not only of a social, economical, or educational nature, but that our own biological status can contribute to the fate of our children, and this effect can be long-lasting," said Mihai Niculescu, M.D., Ph.D., study author from Nutrition Research Institute at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, in Chapel Hill, N.C. "My hope is that, along with many other scientists, we will reveal this tight biological relationship between us as parents, and our children, and how we can improve the lives of our children using our own biological machinery."

To make this discovery, Niculescu and colleagues split mouse females into two groups before gestation, and fed them either a control diet, or a diet deficient in alpha-linolenic acid or ALA. This was achieved by replacing the type of fats in the diet, while keeping the number of calories the same. The females were bred with mouse males kept on a control diet. Immediately after the moms delivered the pups, each of these two initial groups were further split in two, so that each half of the initial groups received a flaxseed oil supplemented diet (rich in ALA), while the other halves from each group remained on the same diet.

Researchers used blood and liver to look at polyunsaturated fatty acid (PUFA) levels and the DNA methylation of a gene called Fads2, which regulates PUFA metabolism. They found that in both the moms and pups, flaxseed oil induced a change in this chemical modification in the Fads2 gene. Flaxseed oil supplementation increased the methylation of this gene, which, in turn, decreased the activation of the gene in pups. However, flaxseed oil was not the only factor with impact upon Fads2 methylation in pups. Results demonstrated that regardless of the flaxseed oil intake, there was a correlation between the methylation of this gene in moms and in their pups, which suggested that pups also inherit this methylation from their moms. The pups' ability to transform PUFAs in their own livers was influenced by both the mother's dietary intake, and also by maternal Fads2 methylation status.

"New York City may be laughed at by some for banning large, sugary sodas and for encouraging a healthy diet," said Gerald Weissmann, M.D., Editor-in-Chief of The FASEB Journal, "This report shows that future generations might not find that funny at all. This report adds to the large body of evidence that an inappropriate diet can produce changes in the function of our DNA and the DNA of our children -- a process called epigenetics. As we begin understand the effects of diet on epigenetics, New York may go from being considered a funny 'nanny-state' to becoming appreciated as a public health visionary."

Walking to the beat could help patients with Parkinson's disease

ScienceDaily (Sep. 20, 2012) ? Walking to a beat could be useful for patients needing rehabilitation, according to a University of Pittsburgh study. The findings, highlighted in the August issue of PLOS ONE, demonstrate that researchers should further investigate the potential of auditory, visual, and tactile cues in the rehabilitation of patients suffering from illnesses like Parkinson's Disease -- a brain disorder leading to shaking (tremors) and difficulty walking.

Together with a team of collaborators from abroad, Ervin Sejdic, an assistant professor of engineering in Pitt's Swanson School of Engineering, studied the effects of various metronomic stimuli (a mechanically produced beat) on fifteen healthy adults, ages 18 to 30. Walkers participated in two sessions consisting of five 15-minute trials in which the participants walked with different cues.

In the first, participants walked at their preferred walking speed. Then, in subsequent trials, participants were asked to walk to a metronomic beat, produced by way of visuals, sound, or touch. Finally, participants were asked to walk with all three cues simultaneously, the pace of which was set to that of the first trial.

"We found that the auditory cue had the greatest influence on human gait, while the visual cues had no significant effect whatsoever," said Sejdic. "This finding could be particularly helpful for patients with Parkinson's Disease, for example, as auditory cues work very well in their rehabilitation."

Sejdic said that with illnesses like Parkinson's Disease, a big question is whether researchers can better understand the changes that come with this deterioration. Through their study, the Pitt team feels that visual cues could be considered as an alternative modality in rehabilitation and should be further explored in the laboratory.

"Oftentimes, a patient with Parkinson's Disease comes in for an exam, completes a gait assessment in the laboratory, and everything is great," said Sejdic. "But then, the person leaves and falls down. Why? Because a laboratory is a strictly controlled environment. It's flat, has few obstacles, and there aren't any cues (like sound) around us. When we're walking around our neighborhoods, however, there are sidewalks, as well as streetlights and people honking car horns: you have to process all of this information together. We are trying to create that real-life space in the laboratory."

In the future, Sejdic and his team would like to conduct similar walking trials with patients with Parkinson's Disease, to observe whether their gait is more or less stable.

"Can we see the same trends that we observed in healthy people?" he said. "And, if we observe the same trends, then that would have direct connotations to rehabilitation processes."

Additionally, his team plans to explore the impact of music on runners and walkers.

Funding for this project was provided, in part, by the University of Pittsburgh, the University of Toronto, and Holland Bloorview Kids Rehabilitation Hospital.

Pakistani protests of anti-Muslim film turn deadly

PESHAWAR, Pakistan (AP) ? Protests over an anti-Muslim film turned violent Friday across Pakistan, with police firing tear gas and live ammunition at thousands of demonstrators who threw rocks and set fire to buildings. At least 17 people were killed and dozens were injured.

Muslims also marched in at least a half-dozen other countries, with some burning American flags and effigies of U.S. President Barack Obama.

Pakistan has experienced nearly a week of deadly protests over the film, "Innocence of Muslims," that has sparked anti-American violence around the Islamic world since it attracted attention on the Internet in the past 10 days. The deaths of at least 47 people, including the U.S. ambassador to Libya, have been linked to the violence over the film, which was made in California and denigrates the Prophet Muhammad.

The Pakistani government declared Friday to be a national holiday ? "Love for the Prophet Day" ? and encouraged peaceful protests.

The U.S. Embassy spent $70,000 for advertisements on Pakistani TV that featured Obama and Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton denouncing the video. Their comments, from previous public events in Washington, were in English but subtitled in Urdu, the main Pakistani language.

The deadliest violence occurred in the southern port city of Karachi, where 12 people were killed and 82 wounded, according to Seemi Jamali and Aftab Channar, officials at two hospitals.

Armed demonstrators among a crowd of 15,000 in that city fired on police, according to police officer Ahmad Hassan. The crowd also burned two cinemas and a bank, he said.

Five people were killed and 60 wounded in the northwestern city of Peshawar, said police official Bashir Khan. Police fired on rioters who set fire to three movie theaters and the city's chamber of commerce, and damaged shops and vehicles.

One of the dead was identified as Mohammad Amir, a driver for a Pakistani TV station who was killed when police bullets hit his vehicle, which was parked near one of the cinemas, said Kashif Mahmood, a reporter for ARY TV who also was in the car. The TV channel showed doctors at a hospital trying unsuccessfully to save Amir's life.

Police beat demonstrators with batons and launched volleys of tear gas. Later in the day, tens of thousands of protesters converged in a neighborhood and called for the maker of the film, an American citizen originally from Egypt, to be executed.

Police and stone-throwers also clashed in Lahore and Islamabad, the capital. Police fired tear gas and warning shots to try to keep them from advancing toward U.S. missions in the cities.

Hospital official Mohammad Naeem says 45 people were wounded in Islamabad, including 28 protesters and 17 police.

Police clashed with over 10,000 demonstrators in several neighborhoods in the capital, including in front of a five-star hotel near the diplomatic enclave where the U.S. Embassy and other foreign missions are located. A military helicopter buzzed overhead as the sound of tear gas being fired echoed across the city.

The government temporarily blocked cellphone service in 15 major cities to prevent militants from using phones to detonate bombs during the protests, said an Interior Ministry official, speaking on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to talk to the media. Blocking cellphones could make it harder for people to organize protests as well.

Pakistan's Foreign Ministry on Friday summoned the U.S. charge d'affaires in Islamabad, Richard Hoagland, over the film. Pakistan has banned access to YouTube because the website refused to remove the video.

Pakistani Prime Minister Raja Pervaiz Ashraf urged the international community to pass laws to prevent people from insulting the prophet.

"If denying the Holocaust is a crime, then is it not fair and legitimate for a Muslim to demand that denigrating and demeaning Islam's holiest personality is no less than a crime?" Ashraf said in a speech to religious scholars and international diplomats in Islamabad.

Denying the Holocaust is a crime in Germany, but not in the U.S.

U.S. officials have tried to explain to the Muslim world how they strongly disagree with the anti-Islam film but have no ability to block it because of free speech guarantees.

In Iraq, about 3,000 protesters condemned the film and caricatures of the prophet that were published in a French satirical weekly. The protest in the southern city of Basra was organized by Iranian-backed Shiite groups. Some protesters raised Iraqi flags and posters of Iran's supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, while chanting: "Death to America."

Protesters burned Israeli and U.S. flags and raised a banner that read: "We condemn the offenses made against the prophet."

In the Sri Lanka capital of Colombo, about 2,000 Muslims burned effigies of Obama and U.S. flags at a protest after Friday prayers, demanding that the United States ban the film. In Bangladesh, more than 2,000 people marched in the capital, Dhaka, and burned a makeshift coffin draped in an American flag and an effigy of Obama.

They also burned a French flag to protest the publication of the caricatures of the prophet. Small and mostly orderly protests were also held in Malaysia and Indonesia.

Thousands gathered in Lebanon's Bekaa Valley for the latest in a series of rallies organized by the Shiite militant group Hezbollah. Protesters carried the yellow Hezbollah flag.

Hezbollah appeared to be trying to ensure the gatherings don't become violent, planning them only in areas where Hezbollah has control. None of the rallies targets the heavily fortified U.S. Embassy in the hills outside Beirut.

Police clamped a daylong curfew in parts of Indian-controlled Kashmir's main city, Srinagar, and chased away protesters opposing the anti-Islam film. Authorities in the region also temporarily blocked cellphone and Internet services to prevent viewing the film clips.

Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad also lashed out at the West over the film and the caricatures in the French weekly, Charlie Hebdo.

"In return for (allowing) the ugliest insults to the divine messenger, they ? the West ? raise the slogan of respect for freedom of speech," Ahmadinejad said at a speech in Tehran.

He said this explanation was "clearly a deception."

In Germany, the Interior Ministry said it was postponing a poster campaign aimed at countering radical Islam among young people due to tensions caused by the online video insulting Islam. It said posters for the campaign ? in German, Turkish and Arabic ? were meant to go on display Friday in German cities with large immigrant populations but are being withheld because of the changed security situation. Germany is home to an estimated 4 million Muslims.

Evidence battle continues in Colorado theater shooting case

File courtroom sketch of Dr. Lynne Fenton and shooting suspect James Holmes (Bill Robles)

A number of witnesses are expected to take the stand in a Colorado courtroom today when lawyers continue their debate over whether a notebook suspected mass murderer James Holmes mailed to his psychiatrist is protected by doctor-patient privilege.

Holmes was arrested two months ago behind an Aurora movie theater, where authorities say he killed 12 people and injured 58 others in a shooting rampage during a premiere showing of Batman "The Dark Knight Rises." The melee is among the worst mass shootings in modern-day American history.

The former Ph.D. neuroscience student has been charged with 142 criminal counts, but prosecutors said this week they want to tack on 10 additional charges. Details of the new charges, which will have to be approved by Judge William Sylvester, haven't been made public.

Holmes allegedly mailed Dr. Lynne Fenton, a University of Colorado psychiatrist he had seen, a package the day before the July 20 shootings. The package, viewed by many as a crucial piece of evidence, reportedly contains a notebook with violent descriptions of an attack.

Prosecutors say the notebook is evidence and want access to the notebook, but the shooting suspect's lawyers maintain that the package is protected under doctor-patient confidentiality and should be returned to Holmes. The package remains sealed in an Arapahoe County court clerk's office until Sylvester can rule on the relationship.

Thursday's hearing is scheduled for noon ET/9 a.m. MT in Centennial. Yahoo News will have a reporter in the courtroom and will update this story throughout the day as details become available.

You need to reduce your potential problem areas and be able to provide realistic action plans and counter measures for every possible situation. This way, you will be able to be prepared and focus your energy on increasing production and efficiency within your organisation.

Why Planning is so Important

Being prepared is a very valuable asset to have when you are running a business. Without preparation, you may be caught off-guard, and in business terms, this will likely mean a huge financial loss or legal penalties. Anticipating different outcomes to an event and having a plan in place for each option is called management, and being informed at all times will ensure that you are always ready ? regardless of the outcome. The larger the business is, the more difficult it might be to stay on top of all challenges every minute of every day. But with professional web-based software applications that will manage every aspect of your business, you will reduce the likelihood of disaster happening, and even if it does, you will be prepared and alert to act on this as soon as possible. This does not only save your business from unwanted expenses and possible loss, but it will help you to stay on track and anticipate future problem issues before they ever exist.

Risk management is more than just providing a solution once a problem exists; it?s about planning in advance, keeping an eye on all business activities, and recognizing a potential problem area before it can have a negative influence on your business activities.
