Measuring Broadband Performance: What Have We Learned in Four Years? from Broadband Breakfast.

In July, the Federal Communications Commission released its second ?Measuring Broadband America? report. ?Broadband providers have significantly improved accuracy in actual versus advertised speeds during the past year and consumers are subscribing to faster speed tiers and receiving faster speeds than ever before.? Measuring progress of bandwidth is essential to unleashing the benefits of big broadband, says the FCC, particularly in order to assure that at least 100 million homes have actual download speeds of 100 Mbps by 2020. How has broadband data made available by the FCC, and by the National Telecommunications and Information Administration?s State Broadband Initiative, changed the broadband landscape from four years ago?

Speakers at the event included:

  • Martha Duggan, Senior Principal for Regulatory Affairs, The National Rural Electrical Cooperative Association
  • Allan Friedman, Research Director, Center for Technology Innovation, Brookings
  • Thomas Gideon, Technical Director, Open Technology Institute New America Foundation
  • Steven F. Morris, Vice President & Associate General Counsel, National Cable & Telecommunications Association (NCTA)
  • David E. Young, Vice President, Federal Regulatory Affairs, Verizon

The Broadband Breakfast Club is sponsored by Comcast, Google, ICF International (ICFI), The National Cable & Telecommunications Association (NCTA) the Telecommunications Industry Association (TIA) and US Telecom.

Pakistani TV stations air a real 'Made in USA' video. Will it calm violence? ( video)

Seeking to stem a wave of anti-American violence, the US Embassy in Pakistan gave TV stations there a public service announcement featuring President Obama and Secretary Clinton.

The United States is taking steps to head off new rounds of anti-American violence in some Muslim countries, even as it moves to get to the bottom of last week?s violent attacks against US interests.

Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton announced Thursday the creation of an investigative board to study last week?s deadly attack on the US Consulate in Benghazi, Libya, that resulted in the deaths of four diplomats, including US Ambassador to Libya Christopher Stevens.

But even as Secretary Clinton was testifying behind closed doors on Capitol Hill on security breaches at a number of US diplomatic missions last week, at least one US embassy was moving to calm Muslim fury by taking the battle over America?s image to the airwaves.

The US Embassy in Islamabad made available to Pakistani television stations a ?Made in USA? public service announcement that features President Obama and Clinton disassociating America and Americans from the anti-Islam video that sparked anti-US violence in Muslim countries beginning last week.?

As protesters chanted outside the walled US mission in Islamabad and burned the US president in effigy, numerous Pakistani TV stations were running the PSAs in which Mr. Obama and Clinton are quoted making the two-part point they have emphasized since the violence first struck the US Embassy in Cairo on Sept. 11: The US government condemns the amateurish video?s message, even as it rejects using the video to justify violence.

?Since our founding, the United States has been a nation that respects all faiths,? Obama says in the video. ?We reject all efforts to denigrate the religious beliefs of others."

Clinton says: "Let me state very clearly, the United States has absolutely nothing to do with this video,? before adding: ?We absolutely reject its contents.?

State Department spokeswoman Victoria Nuland said Thursday that embassy officials in Islamabad came up with the idea for the TV announcements after determining that the Pakistani media were not debunking the common thinking that the US government was behind the made-in-California video that denigrates the Prophet Mohammed.

?As you know, after the video came out, there was concern in lots of [countries] including Pakistan as to whether this represented the views of the US government,? she said.

Some Pakistani TV stations ran the announcement as a free public-service message, while others were paid to run it. The US spent $70,000 to run the 30-second spots on seven stations, according to Ms. Nuland.

The first opportunity to gauge the effectiveness of the US announcements may come Friday, when the Pakistani government has called a national holiday to allow citizens to demonstrate peacefully against the video.

Local officials and staffs of US and other Western embassies in numerous Muslim countries will be on alert Friday for any signs of a resurgence of violence following Friday prayers.?

REAL ESTATE: KB Home size up for 3Q reports a stronger market in ...

Posted on | September 21, 2012 | Comments

KB Home has reported a third-quarter profit of $3.3 million, or 4-cents a share, for the quarter ending Aug. 31, news representing a turn-about from a net loss of $9.6 million or 13-cents a share from the year before.

The homebuilder delivered 1,720 homes during the period, with an average selling price of $245,100. In the sales department, that represents a 7 percent increase from the third-quarter of 2011; and an average home selling price bump-up of 8 percent.

Total revenue rose from $367.3 million in 3Q of 2011 up to $424.5 million.

KB Home has also reported that the West Coast is showing signs of strength. Net orders are up for the nine months, as is the backlog on homes and home values.

The West Coast delivered 1,180 homes, up from 1,101 over the same time frame in 2011. The company reported 23 more net orders over the same period, and the sales price has risen from $321,800 up to $377,200.

?It is clear that the recovery in housing is gaining momentum across the country, as inventory levels are declining and home prices are on the rise,? Jeffrey Mezger, president and chief executive officer, said in a statement released this morning.

?In particular, we are seeing dramatic improvement in California,? he said. ?Continued strengthening in the coastal markets is now spreading inland to Sacramento, the Central Valley and the Inland Empire, he said.

The earnings call starts at 8:30 a.m. today.

Afghanistan bans Pakistani newspapers

Roberto Schmidt / Pool / EPA

Afghanistan President Hamid Karzai, right, meets Mahmood Khan Achakzai, a Pakistani politician and leader of the Pakhtunkhwa Milli Awami Party, at the presidential palace in Kabul on Saturday. Afghanistan has set in motion plans to ban the entry of all newspapers from Pakistan.

By NBC News and news services

Afghanistan has banned all Pakistani newspapers over what security officials say is anti-government propaganda aimed at Kabul, the Ministry of Interior said on Saturday, in a move likely to worsen already tense cross-border ties.

The deputy interior minister in Afghanistan is ordering the Zone One border police commander to stop all the Pakistani newspapers coming from Pakistan through Torkham borders.

The statement says the Pakistani newspapers are an easy source for the Taliban to convey their message, which can change the minds of Afghans.

The main provinces where the papers are distributed are the Nangarhar, Kunar and Noristan provinces.

Pakistani newspapers are usually filled with statements that the Afghan government does not properly represent its people and that its NATO-led allies are "occupying" the country, rather than offering security support, Ihsanuddin Taheri, an interior ministry spokesman, told Reuters.

Some papers have also published speeches by Taliban insurgency leaders, he added, at a time when the government is trying to lure the Taliban into nascent peace talks aimed at ending the 11-year Afghan war.

"We totally reject these statements and the ban is to show them this," said Taheri, adding the nationwide ban could only be reversed by a ministerial decree.

Ties between Afghanistan and Pakistan have been strained by months of cross-border shelling that officials in Kabul have blamed on Pakistan's military. Islamabad accuses Afghanistan of failing to stop anti-government militants operating from mountain havens on Kabul's side of the border.?

On Thursday, the Afghan foreign minister told the U.N. Security Council in New York that diplomatic ties with Pakistan were under threat.

NBC's Atia Abawi and Reuters contributed to this story.

(AP) ? U.S. stock futures rebounded Friday after several volatile days of trading and appear headed into positive territory for the week.

Dow Jones industrial futures rose 50 points to 13,565. The broader S&P futures tacked on 4.2 points to 1,458. Nasdaq futures rose 10.75 points to 2,864.

The leaders of two economically troubled European nations vowed to do all that is necessary to preserve the 17-nation monetary union.

Italy's Premier Mario Monti met Friday with Greek Prime Minister Antonis Samaras on the sidelines of a political conference in Rome. The two leaders reiterated their conviction of "the absolute need to safeguard the integrity of the eurozone."

The fear has been that Greece, after recent elections, would refuse to pay off its international debts, essentially breaking up the monetary union.

In the U.S., Darden Restaurants, owner of the Olive Garden and Red Lobster chains, posted a 4 percent profit increase for its fiscal first quarter. That topped most expectations on Wall Street and shares rose more than 4 percent in premarket trading.

Huawei's Windows Phone 8 handset outed as Ascend W1, supposed launch window surfaces

HTC, Nokia and Samsung have each showcased their initial volley of Windows Phone 8 handsets, but Huawei has yet to reveal the Ascend hardware it promised would run Microsoft's smartphone OS. The firm's Richard Yu took to the social network Sina Weibo and outed the device as the Ascend W1 earlier this week, but kept other specifics under wraps. Citing sources from within the company, Chinese language outlet Winp is now claiming that the W1 will ship between November and December, carry a price tag of 2,000 RMB ($317) and arrive in black, blue, pink and white hues. Though a September 25th unveiling is also rumored, Yu mentioned that Huawei will make it a habit of launching phones as they're unveiled, so it may be a while before the curtain is fully pulled back if the November / December window is correct.
