Pew: Religious Restrictions on the Rise ? Campus Notes

The Pew Forum has released its annual report detailing the state of religious freedom in the United States. And the news isn?t good.

The bad news is that The United States has been moved from Pew?s ?low? to ?moderate? category of restrictions on religious freedom.

The worse news is that the report doesn?t even take into account the most recent year of activity from the federal government which includes the infringement of religious liberty that is the HHS Mandate.

The United States was among the 16 countries whose scores on both the Government Restrictions Index and the Social Hostilities Index increased by one point or more in the year ending in mid-2010. This was the first time scores for the U.S. increased on both indexes during the four-year period covered in this study.

Pew detailed a number of incidences where government agencies discriminated against religious groups.

In May 2010, the 10th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals upheld a lower court ruling that the Boulder County Commissioners had discriminated against the Rocky Mountain Christian Church by denying it permits to expand its school and worship facilities even though the commissioners had issued permits to a nearby secular school for a similar expansion. . . .

The Justice Department ? in a report marking the 10th anniversary of the passage of RLUIPA ? noted that 31 of its 51 land-use investigations from 2000-2010 involved Christian groups; most of the remaining 20 investigations involved religious minorities, including Muslims (seven investigations), Jews (six), Buddhists (three) and Hindus (one).

The thing to notice (and be wary of) from this report is that the restrictions of religious liberty that the Obama administration is attempting to enforce are not anomalies but only the latest increment towards transforming freedom of religion into a much more restrictive ?freedom of worship.?

Texting blamed for rising teen pedestrian injuries

By Jacoba Urist, NBC News

James Whitaker / Getty Images

Pedestrian injuries among teens are on the rise and experts believe it's because so many are distracted by their phones while walking.

Many of us have done it -- checked our phones to read a new text or send a quick tweet as we stroll down the street. It only takes a few seconds, right? ?And while we know we should watch where we?re going, we think, worst case: we?ll bump into the person in front of us, or trip on the sidewalk.

But experts are blaming texting and walking on the rising number of pedestrian injuries and deaths among teens. Walking safely, they say, is, in fact, a two way street: it requires the focused attention of both pedestrians and drivers.

A new report shows that in recent years, pedestrian injuries among 16 to 19 year-olds increased 25 percent. Teens aged 14 to 19 made up half of all child pedestrian injuries, according to the report from SafeKids, a global non-profit organization focused on preventing injuries among children.

The study, Walking Safely: A Report to the Nation, took snapshot views of pedestrian death and injury among five year intervals from 1995 through 2010 and looked at age groups 0 to 4, 5 to 9, 10 to 14 and 15 to 19. Using data from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration and the U.S. Census Bureau, SafeKids found that the death rate among older teens is now twice that of younger kids,?with 1.11 deaths per 100,000 members of the population as opposed to .47, .33, and .45 in the other cohorts respectively.?

While the report, sponsored by FedEx, doesn?t break down how many of those were using mobile devices at the time of injury,?Kate Carr, president and CEO of SafeKids Worldwide, says she believes that?s what is driving the rise in injuries.

?In addition to the increase in pedestrian injuries we saw among older teenagers, we also examined numerous outside reports about how much mobile use has increased among teens, ? she says. ?We know that the average number of texts per teen has risen dramatically. Couple that with drivers who are talking on the phone or texting, and you have distracted people on both sides of the equation. Our hypothesis is that the rise in injuries among these older teens is caused by their dramatic increase in their cell phone use.? ?

September and October, when kids have?headed back to school and?it?s still warm enough to walk in many places, are among the deadliest months according to the SafeKids report. To combat it, some schools have started offering programs on walking safety.

In fact, Florida Atlantic University has?made walking safety the focus of?its annual back-to-school Safety Month in September. Charles Lowe, the university's?police chief, says he's seen a significant increase in people biking or walking and texting at the same time.

?Many of the people seem unaware of what is going on around them,? he said in an email to NBC News. ?They trip over obstacles, walk out into traffic and run into other people.?

In response, this month the school is blaring messages over the speaker system in the main campuses breezeway reminding?students to stop looking at their phones and focus on their feet.

Andrea Gielen, the director of the Johns Hopkins Center for Injury Research and Policy, has worked extensively on pedestrian safety for high school and college campuses across the country and recommends parents begin teaching safe walking habits early. For starters, don't let kids cross the street until they are at least 10 without an adult so they can see parents modeling good behavior.?(Which means parents have to put down their phones too!)

And Gielen reminds parents to teach their children that they can?t necessarily rely on drivers to be paying attention. Kids, she says, need to learn how to be safe pedestrians just like they learn to be safe drivers in driver?s education classes.

Her golden three rules for all pedestrians:?

  • Follow all street signs and cross with the light
  • Always put your phone down or in your pocket before you step off the curb
  • Make eye contact with the driver before you cross

So long, Verizon-exclusive NFL app: SiriusXM now streams NFL games

SiriusXM

Had a pleasant surprise during Week 3 of the NFL season. (Never mind that the Steelers blew it by letting the Raiders within a half-mile of the end zone, with ol' Sea Bass on the sidelines.) SiriusXM is now streaming NFL games live online. And that means you also can listen to them on the SiriusXM Android application.

And that means I no longer need the NFL Mobile app, which only officially works on Verizon phones, to listen to games that aren't on TV. (And, yes, that means no cracked versions.)

I've never been a fan of such exclusives. Now, it doesn't matter. You will, however, need an extra app to keep up with the latest news and stats, but that's no big deal. OK, and you'll also need a subscription to SiriusXM. But kudos to to the company for getting this one done. Why didn't anyone tell me before now?

How to tame your fears of public speaking | The Salt Lake Tribune

Some people make public speaking seem so easy.

They make just the right hand gestures at just the right time, use just the right tone of voice, provide a super PowerPoint presentation and conclude with a riveting message that has the audience leaping to its feet and applauding.

But for many people, speaking in public can be a nerve-wracking, knee-knocking experience that leaves them with clammy hands and a churning stomach. It doesn?t matter if the presentation is in front of a small group of people or a major speech in a large auditorium, the heart-pounding anxiety is the same.

If you?re nervous speaking publicly, you?re not alone.

While some nervousness can keep you focused, being too anxious can undermine your efforts.

If you?re so nervous that you begin reading your PowerPoint slides in a monotone instead of trying to connect with your audience, then your professional reputation could take a hit or you might lose an important client.

You can manage your nerves in several ways, says Darlene Price, who has coached thousands of executives and professionals on how to improve their public speaking techniques.

"Fear is what drives nervousness," Price says. "For extroverts, fear of embarrassing themselves in front of others is what drives their nervousness while for introverts it?s that fear of not being perfect."

You can master your fear of public speaking in several ways, she says. The most common mistake is not prepping for the audience.

"If people would just take the time ?? while they?re walking the dog or taking a shower ? to just practice out loud what they want to say, it would help them be better prepared," she says.

story continues below

Price says that those who get nervous should look for strategies that better help them manage their fears. Among her suggestions:

? Visualize it

Close your eyes and see the space where you?ll be speaking.

See yourself walking out with a big smile on your face. Visualize yourself saying the first few lines of speech and looking out into the audience.

"The brain doesn?t know the difference between vividly imagined events or a real events," she says. "Get all your senses involved. Hear yourself speaking. See the people."

? List 10 "I am" statements

This is an exercise that Price finds effective for clients.

Research shows ants share decision-making, lessen vulnerability to 'information overload'

Collective decision-making proves more efficient than individual selection

TEMPE, Ariz. Scientists at Arizona State University have discovered that ants utilize a strategy to handle "information overload." Temnothorax rugatulus ants, commonly found living in rock crevices in the Southwest, place the burden of making complicated decisions on the backs of the entire colony, rather than on an individual ant.

In a study published in the early, online version of scientific journal Current Biology, Stephen Pratt, an associate professor in ASU's School of Life Sciences in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, and Takao Sasaki, a graduate student in Pratt's lab, suggest that the key to preventing cognitive overload is found in collective decision-making, rather than in multi-tasking.

"I think the reason people are interested in this is because as humans, we can become overloaded with information and that can possibly be detrimental both to our health and to how effectively we make decisions," Pratt said. "There's a sense that as a society, we are being more and more overwhelmed by information."

Previous research has shown that ant colonies have the ability to compare the quality of two potential nest sites even if no single ant visits both sites. Pratt and Sasaki hypothesized that a colony could choose a high-quality nest from many more options more effectively than individual ants, because each member of the colony assesses only a small part of portion of available sites, and then shares the information with the entire colony.

"People usually think of ants as sort of stupid, that they can't really compare options, or that they don't have good cognition," said Sasaki. "But actually, individual ants can compare options, and that's why they too experience cognitive overload a well-documented phenomenon in human beings."

The pair designed experiments with artificial nest sites to evaluate the ants' decision-making abilities. Both colonies and individual ants were given two levels of tasks. Ants had to choose between two nests, or they had to choose among eight nests. In both experiments, half the nests were unsuitable. Nests are frequently chosen based on entrance and cavity size, as well as darkness and other features.

Researchers discovered that individual ants made much worse decisions when faced with eight options rather than two, meaning that they experienced cognitive overload. Colonies, on the other hand, did equally well with either two or eight options, showing that they could handle the harder problem as a collective.

The study shows what Pratt believes to be the answer to two questions: What do you get out of being a collective intelligence? And secondly, why and how is a group smarter than an individual?

"Living in a group is costly in many ways, so ants must get some benefit from doing it," said Pratt. "By sharing the burden of decision-making, colonies avoid the mistakes that a solitary animal makes when taking on too much information. What's great about these ants is that we can see exactly how they do this, by making sure that no ant has to process more information than it is able to."

Pratt added that this is one problem ants can solve, but that there are other problems ants face that we might be able to learn from.

"What we really want is a more complete understanding as to how this society works as a kind of distributed brain," Pratt said. He believes their research may provide insight into how to handle information excess in society and will have applications in collective robotics.
