I?ve been thinking a lot about Fran Lebowitz lately ? mainly because of THIS

You?re welcome.

As you can see Fran is scarcely a newly-minted fly-by-night ?phenom.?

?Lebowitz was born and raised in Morristown, New Jersey, in an ?observant? Jewish family.
After being expelled from high school and receiving a GED, Lebowitz worked many odd jobs before being hired by Andy Warhol as a columnist for Interview. This was followed by a stint at Mademoiselle. Her first book was a collection of essays titled Metropolitan Life, released in 1978,

ML

followed by Social Studies in 1981,

SS

both of which are collected (with a new introductory essay) in The Fran Lebowitz Reader.

FLR

She has been famous, in part, for Exterior Signs of Wealth, a long-overdue, unfinished novel, purportedly about rich people who want to be artists, and artists who want to be rich?

Clearly its inspiration was the many years she spent as a professional house guest for the likes of Barry,

and the other Gay Mafia capi.

?She also made several appearances on Late Night with David Letterman. She has made recurring appearances as Judge Janice Goldberg on the television drama Law & Order.
Lebowitz, herself a heavy smoker, is known for her advocacy of smokers? rights.
In September 2007, Fran Lebowitz was named one of the year?s most stylish women in Vanity Fair?s 68th Annual International Best-Dressed List, and she is known to sport tailored suits by the Savile Row tailor Anderson & Sheppard. On November 17, 2010, Fran made a return appearance on Late Show with David Letterman after a 16-year absence. She discussed her years-long writer?s block, which she jokingly referred to as ?writer?s blockade?. On November 22, 2010, HBO debuted Public Speaking, a documentary about Lebowitz by Martin Scorsese containing interviews and clips from speaking engagements.?

M&F

Here?s a pithy clip.

Fran has been glibly compared to Dorothy Parker. They have precious little in common. HERE?S the Dorothy that counts with Fran.

DD

DoDo Mae Doom, aka. ?The Black Barbarella? was famous for speaking casually in the style a Flaubert or Mallarme would agonize for years on end to get down on paper. Fran is clearly following her example, writing on air as it were. And she?s quite good at it.

Yes friends Mabel Mercer?s gone. Fran is now New York?s most incurable diseuse

AfDB on Enhanced Civil Society Engagement | African News and ...

AfDB on Enhanced Civil Society Engagement

The Board of the African Development Bank (AfDB)?approved on 3rd October the Bank?s Framework for Enhanced Civil Society Organization (CSO) Engagement.

It is designed to better structure the AfDB?s broader and deeper engagement with CSOs at the corporate, regional/country and project levels, through the three dimensions of outreach, dialogue and partnership.

It is also designed to strengthen and renew the existing mechanisms of participation and coordination, by setting out specific activities for each dimension at each level in order to achieve greater development results in the Regional Member Countries.

The Framework came up after a large participatory approach including key consultations with the representatives of diverse African civil society entities.

Those consultations were continued during the Bank?s Annual Meetings in May 2012 in Arusha, Tanzania.

The Framework will be implemented in a progressive and sustainable way, building on results achieved.

?This is an important step achieved by the Bank in its traditional cooperation with these major actors in Africa,? said Ms. Ginette-Ursule Yoman, Division Manager, Gender and Social Development Monitoring Division, AfDB. ?The Enhanced Framework sets up a vision perfectly in line with the Bank?s Long-Term Strategy for an inclusive growth on the continent, and identifies clear ways to achieve it through a strong cooperation with civil society organizations.?

Terry Francona hired as Cleveland manager

Puskar, File)

(AP) ? Terry Francona is getting back with one of his baseball families.

Francona, who guided the Boston Red Sox to two World Series titles, has been hired as manager of the Cleveland Indians, a team that collapsed in the second half this season after a promising first four months. The sides continued working Saturday night on the length of Francona's contract.

The 53-year-old will be formally introduced as Cleveland's 42nd manager during a Monday news conference at Progressive Field.

"I'm really excited," Francona said on the air as an ESPN analyst, his job for the past season. "People who don't know me may have thought I was looking for something different."

The Indians chose Francona over Sandy Alomar Jr., who served as the club's interim manager for the final six games after Manny Acta was fired on Sept. 27. Francona and Alomar, who spent the past three seasons as a coach in Cleveland, were the only candidates to interview for the Indians' opening.

Alomar has been offered a spot on Francona's staff, most likely as bench coach.

The Indians have always held a special place for Francona. After he was fired as Philadelphia's manager, he worked in Cleveland's front office as an adviser in 2001. He also spent a portion of the 1988 season on Cleveland's major league roster and his father, Tito, played with the Indians from 1959-64.

Francona has stayed close with Indians president Mark Shapiro and general manager Chris Antonetti over the past decade. He said the chance to work with them again is what intrigued him most about the Cleveland job, which will have its challenges because of a much smaller payroll than he enjoyed in Boston.

"It's a good story, almost a family feeling," Francona said after his interview on Friday. "I don't think you can take a job because of that, but it still means a lot to me. Because of Chris and Mark and my relationship, I am excited to try to tackle, or attempt to tackle, every challenge that comes our way and do it together."

There are some major challenges in Cleveland, where fans have been waiting for a World Series winner since 1948.

The Indians were a major disappointment this season, going 68-94. They were within 3 1-2 games of first place on July 27, but went 5-24 in August ? the worst month in the franchise's 112-year history ? and finished 20 games out in the AL Central. Acta didn't get to finish his third season with the club.

"We have better talent than our record shows," Antonetti said earlier this week.

With shortstop Asdrubal Cabrera, second baseman Jason Kipnis, center fielder Michael Brantley and catcher Carlos Santana, the Indians have a solid core of young position players to build around. Cleveland's bullpen was the strength of the team this season, but All-Star closer Chris Perez caused distractions with his comments and actions.

The Indians lacked a proven power hitter ? DH Travis Hafner was injured much of the season ? and it remains to be seen if Cleveland owner Paul Dolan will spend in free agency to add talent.

Francona interviewed with the Indians one day after Alomar, a six-time All-Star catcher for Cleveland and fan favorite. Alomar managed the Indians to a 3-3 record after Acta was dismissed. Alomar will likely be courted by other teams seeking a manager. He interviewed with Boston last year before the Red Sox hired Bobby Valentine.

Francona spent eight seasons with the Red Sox but was not brought back after the club fell apart down the stretch in 2011. This season, Francona worked as a TV broadcaster and said it was while preparing for telecasts that he realized how much he missed managing and being around players.

"We appreciate Terry's great contributions to our baseball coverage and we wish him the best,"? ESPN said in a statement, adding Francona will appear as a guest analyst during the network's World Series coverage.

Francona has managed for 12 seasons in the majors, compiling a 1,029-915 record.

"I played for Tito (Francona) and everybody knows his track record is a good one," said Indians pitcher Justin Masterson, who was with Francona in Boston for 2008-9.

Antonetti said part of Francona's appeal was how he developed young players like Dustin Pedroia, Kevin Youkilis, Clay Buchholz and Jon Lester as they came up through Boston's system.

"In addition to that, he's a great communicator and an accomplished leader," Antonetti said.

Latest giant wind turbine could power 3,200 homes

11 hrs.

Wind energy company Vestas had planned on building a 7-megawatt giant offshore turbine, but has decided to up it to 8 megawatts, in a bid to lower costs and secure buyers.

The boost, the company said, has been a possibility since they started work on the V164 platform in March 2011.

?Progress in the technology development has now shown that an 8 MW version will offer lower cost of energy and at the same time keep the reliability and structural integrity of the turbine unchanged,? Vestas said?in a press release.?

The increased power output per turbine reduces the number of power plants in any given offshore wind farm to erect and maintain. Since the general rule of thumb is that 400 homes can be powered by each megawatt in an offshore wind farm, each of the Vestas turbines will power not 2,800 homes but 3,200.?

The company started work on the turbine primarily to service planned offshore wind farms in the rough conditions of the North Sea. In June of this year, Vestas stopped work on a manufacturing plant to build the turbines outside of London due to a lack of buyers, Earth Techling noted.?

Development for the turbine, however, continues. A mold for the 262-foot blade is ready at a Vestas test facility on the Isle of Wight and construction of a test blade will begin by year end.

The key for Vestas and other players in the offshore wind industry will be to bring down costs of the technology, which,?as pointed out by the New York Times on Wednesday, is desirable because of its "not in my backyard" attributes:?

At present, exploiting offshore wind to generate electricity is twice as expensive as using onshore wind and far more expensive than using fossil fuels, analysts say.

?Offshore wind is inherently expensive because it is offshore,? said Dieter Helm, a professor of energy policy at the University of Oxford. ?The main reason we are building offshore wind is because people don?t like onshore wind.?

By building bigger, and thus fewer, turbines, Vestas believes it can lower the cost of the technology, which has the benefit of no carbon emissions while generating energy.

The ploy makes economic sense, but the sales pitch, going not to 7 but to 8 megawatts, calls to mind Nigel in the movie ?This is Spinal Tap? when he shows off his amplifier that ?goes up to 11.??

?It is one louder, isn?t it?? he said. ?It?s not 10.?

(AP) ? Meryl Streep has donated $1 million to The Public Theater in honor of both its late founder, Joseph Papp, and her friend, the author Nora Ephron.

The announcement was timed to Thursday's unveiling of the nonprofit's $40 million face-lift to its 158-year-old headquarters in Astor Place.

Streep has performed for the Public for decades, starting in 1975 and including "Henry V" in 1976 and "Mother Courage and Her Children" in 2006. This summer, she played Juliet opposite Kevin Kline as Romeo in a benefit reading of "Romeo and Juliet" in Central Park.

Ephron, who died in June, directed Streep in her portrayal of chef Julia Child in 2009's "Julie & Julia." And Streep played a version of Ephron herself in 1986's "Heartburn."

"Meryl is as great a citizen as she is an actor," said Oskar Eustis, artistic director of the theater. "Joe Papp founded The Public in the belief that great theater belonged to all the people. It means an enormous amount to us that the greatest actor of our time supports that mission."
