Salmon Potato Pizza - From Tv Food and Drink, Brought to you by ...

It?s Monday, but hey? it could be worse. You could have a job that includes the words ?live television? and ?portable rigging.?

Come one! Come all! See the big finale to Miss Vivian?s act while performing on the ABC children?s show Super Circus (1949-1956) below, followed by my interpretation of this month?s Burwell General Store recipe swap.

If you?re hoping for the inclusion of dark red pickled beets, you?ve come to the wrong TvFoodAndDrink.com

This is my third month participating in the?Burwell General Store Recipe Swap.? run by my friend Christianna, who apparently doesn?t know that I?d rather be Miss Vivian?s Super Circus??Portable Rigging? Rehearsal Tester than put a beet anywhere near any of my body openings. ?What Russians electively decide to put inside themselves is none of my business. ?Yes, something had to be done about this recipe. ?Luckily, that?s the what the Burwell General Store Recipe Swap is all about!

Smoked Salmon Potato Pizza:

  • Pizza dough (recipe here)
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil, separated
  • 1 small red potato, unpeeled, very thinly sliced
  • 1 tablespoon drained capers, chopped
  • 1/2 ?Vidalia onion, thinly sliced
  • 1/3 cup grated mozzarella cheese
  • approximately 1/4 pound smoked salmon, thinly sliced
  • ? cup light sour cream
  • 1 tablespoon chopped fresh dill
  • 1 lemon, halved.
  • Salt and pepper for seasoning

Lemon Dill Sauce:

  • 1/2 cup sour cream
  • 1/8 teaspoon salt
  • 1/8 teaspoon pepper
  • 1 tablespoon chopped fresh dill
  • 1 teaspoon lemon juice
  • Cream or buttermilk for thinning, if desired.

Preheat oven and a pizza stone to 500 degrees F for thirty minutes.

Combine all the ingredients for the lemon dill sauce into a small bowl or measuring cup. ?If consistency is thicker than desired, add buttermilk or cream, one teaspoon at a time, and stir until desired texture is reached. ?Transfer into a plastic squeeze bottle and set aside.

Roll out pizza dough to approximately 12 inches, drizzle with 1 tablespoon olive oil.

Pour 1 tablespoon olive oil into a heated pan, add onions with pinches of salt and pepper, and saut??for 5 minutes. Lower heat and simmer until onions are tender.

Top pizza dough with potato slices and cheese. ?Add onions and drizzle over any liquid left in the pan. ?Cook for 6 minutes or until cheese just begins to melt.

Remove pizza from oven and scatter the top with the salmon and the capers. Return to oven for approximately 3 more minutes, or until the cheese is fully melted and browned slightly.

Remove pizza from oven. ?Drizzle the top with the lemon dill sauce. ?Squeeze the juice of half a lemon over the top. ?Cut the other half of the lemon into slices and serve alongside the pizza.

Boat Transportation

Access to a reliable transportation service is essential for private boat owners and boat businesses that need to deliver boats to new sailing areas, new owners, boat yards, docks and exhibitions. If you are trusting your precious boat and equipment to a company that are transporting it by sea, road or freight, you need to be sure that you are dealing with a specialist organisation. These companies need to be expert in managing all the logistics involved with boat transportation, including insurance, travel schedules, escorts and police or local authority permissions, while maintaining a tailor-made package which suits you and your boat at the same time. Capabilities should include several options to providing the safest, efficient and most cost effective way of moving your vessel.

What will you have to do to prepare your boat for transportation? Here are some of the many things to consider. Make sure you are aware of what the transport company will take care of and what you will be expected to do:-

Oversee the preparation of your boat yourself, or have a qualified yard do so. The carrier will not be responsible for damage caused by improper preparation. The condition of your boat will be noted at the start and end of its journey and you will normally be expected to sign this report.

Remove anything that is loose or hangs freely, both externally and internally, such as boat covers, spray hoods, fenders and warps.

Disconnect gas bottles and batteries.

Drain water and fuel tanks and make sure there is no water in the bilges. During winter months you will probably have to drain water from water systems pumps and air conditioners.

Windows and hatches should be secured, taped from the outside and sealed if they leak.

Find out about loaded height restrictions and check whether you need to remove things like aerials, lights, navigation masts etc.

Find out whether windscreens, props, rudders etc. need to be removed.

Find out about cranage of the vessel, on and off trailers, at collection and destination points; whether it should be arranged by you (the boat owner), or the transport company.

Make sure that all your paper work such as SSR insurance and VAT documentation, are given to the driver.

Discuss with your transport company the possibility of sheeting the vessel in order to protect it from spray, if it is going by road.

Make sure that the transport company is fully aware of rules and regulations in the other countries they are transporting to.

How do you choose?

There are many specialist boat transportation companies with comprehensive websites. Here you can provide details of your boat, its dimensions and details such as the start point and destination of its journey. They will then be able to provide you with a quotation. Not all transport companies are comprehensively insured with an All Risks Policy, so be sure that you find out exactly what the various insurances involve. Do make sure that you talk to the company, read carefully everything they claim to provide, including all the small print and don't necessarily go for the cheapest option. When you are trusting them with something as precious and valuable as your boat, you need to have complete confidence that your boat will arrive safely, in perfect condition and on time.

Here are a selection of Boat Transportation companies to help get you started.

Ohio State University marching band salutes video games

The half-time show for last night's Ohio State University vs. Nebraska game included some familiar faces amidst all the fancy footwork. OSU's show paid tribute to a range of video games, beautifully executed in sight and sound, featuring Pokemon, Mario Bros., Tetris, Halo, Zelda and Pac-Man. We dare you to not get chills.

The OSU marching band is one of the few brass- and percussion-only bands in the country, and it boasts 225 members. Keep that in mind if you want to watch one of the Joystiq editors in her 2005 Halo 2-themed high school marching show, with a band of 100, some of which were piccolos (ouch).

Israel downs drone over its airspace, suspects Hezbollah

Israel scrambled fighter jets to intercept a drone Saturday that crossed deep into Israeli airspace from the Mediterranean Sea, shooting the aircraft down over the country's southern desert, the military said.

The incident marked the first time in at least six years that a hostile aircraft has penetrated Israel's airspace, and Israeli officials said they were taking the incident seriously, raising the possibility of retaliatory action.

It was not immediately clear who launched the drone, but suspicion quickly fell on the Lebanese Islamic militant group Hezbollah. The Iranian-backed group is known to have sent drones into Israeli airspace on several previous occasions.

Tensions are running high between Iran and Israel over Tehran's nuclear program, which the West believes is cover for the development of atomic weapons. The Islamic Republic denies the allegations, and says its program is for peaceful purposes only. Israel has threatened to carry out a military strike against Iran's nuclear facilities to prevent Iran from acquiring such weapons.

RELATED ? Bomb Iran? Why five Israeli officials don't want to do it

Lt. Col. Avital Leibovich said Israeli ground systems detected the drone, which flew over the Gaza Strip but did not originate there, Saturday morning and alerted the air force, which scrambled the jets to intercept the aircraft. She said Israel was still trying to determine where the drone took off from. Nobody was hurt in the incident.

Leibovich said Israeli jets escorted the drone before deciding to bring it down in the northern Negev area, which is largely uninhabited.

The drone, which was downed near the Yatir Forrest close to the West Bank, had spent about 20 minutes in Israeli air space, an Israeli military official said on condition of anonymity in line with protocol.

Leibovich did not give more details, but Israel media reported that the aircraft was not carrying explosives and could have been a surveillance drone.

Defense Minister Ehud Barak said in a statement that Israel views "this incident of attempting to enter Israeli airspace very severely and we will consider our response later," while Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu vowed that Israel "will continue to defend our borders in the sea, on the land and in the air for the security of the citizens of Israel."

It's not the first time that Israel has shot down a drone in its airspace, although such cases are very rare.

Hezbollah sent a few aircraft over Israel over the past decade but without much success. In the 2006 war, the militant group launched an Iranian-made drone capable of carrying explosives into Israel that was shot down. Another drone two years earlier crashed in the Mediterranean.

Last week Israeli authorities indicted an Arab citizen of Israel on charges of spying for Hezbollah, accusing him of gathering intelligence on security for Israel's president and other public officials as well as military installations.

Turning Your Kids into Energy Informers

Back in the good old Motherland of Socialism, children were taught to inform on their parents by using the example of a lively lad by the name of Pavlik Morozov who had an enormously long head and informed on his parents. Now that the USSR is done and the USSA is getting started, the EPA, that noble agency dedicated to fighting to saving the world from cow farts and people who pave over mosquito infested ponds in their backyard, is helping prepare the children of today to become the informers of tomorrow.

This must be what Obama means by winning the future.

One of the items in the box reads, ?Educate students and staff about how their behaviors affect energy use. Some schools have created student energy patrols to monitor and inform others when energy is wasted.?

For example, the Arizona Public School?s website provides information for setting up energy patrols. The website states ?emphasize social action through environmental education gives students a chance to do something about environmental problems instead of just hearing about them.?

The APS website says that patrol members can be provided with ID tags, vests and clipboards. Their responsibilities include leaving reminders to better conserve energy in rooms they find that have the lights on but are unoccupied.

First the schools and then the homes. And then the neighbors. First ID tags, vest and clipboards. Then full uniforms. First notes and then labor camps. It?s for the good of the planet and all those polar bears falling off melting icebergs down into the depths of the ocean. Think of them while Timmy informs on you to the EPA for not turning off the light when you leave the kitchen.

The real question here is why haven?t the little informer squads been unionized yet? It?s troubling to think of a government agency proposing the creation of union-busting freelance unpaid informers when those positions by right should require union membership and a full suite of benefits.

South Korea "Baby box" pastor says new law brings more babies

SEOUL (Reuters) - A South Korean pastor who runs a "baby box" where mothers can leave unwanted infants has seen a sharp increase in the number of newborns being left there because, the pastor says, of a new law aimed at protecting the rights of children.

South Korea is trying to shed a reputation of being a source of babies for adoption by people abroad. It is encouraging domestic adoption and tightening up the process of a child's transfer from birth mother to adoptive parents.

The law that took effect in August is aimed at ensuring adoption is more transparent and makes it mandatory for parents to register newborns if they want to give them up.

But the regulation aimed at seeing more thorough records are kept, though well intentioned, has sparked a surge of undocumented babies being abandoned, said Pastor Lee Jong-rak.

"If you look at the letters that mothers leave with their babies, they say they have nowhere to go, and it's because of the new law," Lee told Reuters.

Lee, who opened his "baby box" for unwanted infants three years ago, said he had seen the number being left there shoot up from an average of five a month to 10 in August and 14 in September.

Despite the new law, Lee said he never forced mothers to provide information about the babies they leave in the box, built into the wall of his church in Nangok, a tough working-class neighbourhood in the capital, Seoul.

Many of the babies abandoned in the box have physical or mental disabilities. Lee has adopted 10 of them himself and is in the process of adopting four more.

On a recent sunny afternoon, a bell rang in his church to signal a new baby had been left in the box, a boy about two weeks old wrapped in a blanket.

"In the past, babies used to be abandoned at night but nowadays babies are abandoned in the daytime as well," Lee said with a sigh.

At the moment, Lee is looking after 20 children, aged between 2 and 26, in his cramped two-storey house. Among them, his own son.

But a Ministry of Health and Welfare official questioned Lee's assertion that the new law had led to more babies being dropped in the box.

"It's hard to say there's a specific causal relationship between the law and babies being abandoned in the box," said the official, who declined to be identified.

"The sudden surge of the babies could be due to many reasons," said the official.

Lee has been criticised by some people who say his box encourages desperate mothers to give up their babies. But Lee says he will not close the box until he was sure the government can offer adequate protection for abandoned babies.
